MISSION & VISION the strategic imperatives of academic excellence and relevance, financial equilibrium and growth, sustaining pastors in ministry, and cultivation of a quality place to work and study. These imperatives frame the Seminary’s work and ministry as it implements a congregational model for educating clergy. In addition to the ongoing work of the Seminary, the LTS community has been engaged in the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) selfstudy process in anticipation of a comprehensive site visit in March 2016.

President Charisse L. Gillett

The mission of Lexington

Theological Seminary is to prepare faithful leaders for the church of Jesus Christ and, thus, to strengthen the church’s participation in God’s mission for the world. We accomplish this mission in partnership and covenant with the church, the academy, congregations and one another. In service to this mission, the Board of Trustees endorsed

The transformation of the Seminary’s educational model, finances, student body and facilities to meet the needs of our stakeholders is remarkable. Indeed, this successful institutional transformation formed the core narrative for the ATS ten year accreditation review process. The ATS visiting team/evaluation committee noted in its final report to the Board of Commissioners that LTS had: “a willingness to make difficult decisions for the sake of the mission, particularly following the financial crisis of 2008-09 that resulted in collaborative efforts to reimagine and reinvent the Seminary for a sustainable

future, based on a clear theological vision.”

The Board of Commissioners of the ATS voted “to grant ongoing approval of the low-residency educational model for the school’s degree programs, no longer considering the model as an experiment, but as a proven model.” Ultimately the board reaffirmed the accreditation of Lexington Theological Seminary for 10 years. The Seminary has been asked to provide a series of reports on targeted issues on or before April 2018, but will not have another accreditation visit until 2026. This is good news! Measures of Success We have maintained progress on the Seminary’s strategic imperatives. Seminary faculty, staff, and administrators work tirelessly to educate, mentor, encourage and retain students while responsibly fulfilling our budgetary obligations. I want to acknowledge a few key measures of their work that strengthen the fabric of our institution. In addition to the 10-year accreditation, we celebrate several highlights of 2016: • A $125,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc.,

Please join me in offering sincere appreciation to LTS trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff for their commitment to our students. It has been an eventful year, and the Seminary will face both new and old challenges in the year ahead, but for now, let us give thanks with grateful hearts for all that has been accomplished in 2016. Finally, I am most grateful to this board, LTS vice-presidents, faculty, staff, students, and of course my family, for your support. This support has enabled me to serve the institution as president for five years. I trust God for a future which includes a healthy seminary dedicated to serving students who want to serve the church. I know we will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Spiritual Growth

LTS alum works to nurture mission from the inside out

The Rev. Matthew Hunt may be preaching about handmade Christians in a cookie-cutter world, but don’t expect him to take a cookie-cutter approach to ministry. “I know what I want to do. I am absolutely committed to getting there. I’ll stop at nothing,” Hunt said. “I passionately love people, passionately love Jesus, and that’s what compels me to be who I am.” Pastor of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ in Quincy, Ill., since January, Hunt already feels at home in both the church and the Quincy community. “I just feel like I was supposed to be here,” he said. Hunt was installed as pastor in April. “We’ve taken some very tangible, important steps toward growth, church health and well-being. We’re in a good spot right now.” The Southeast Iowa native grew up in a strong church family, and his career choice came as no surprise to leaders in the Pentecostal Assembly of God Church in Burlington who nurtured him on a path to ministry “Probably the surprise was, I didn’t go into ministry with their church,” Hunt said. After graduating from Western Illinois University with a degree in sociology and communications, he worked with high school and college students at the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Macomb. Along with the job, he found a spiritual home with other Christians who shared his inclusive beliefs. Hunt graduated from Lexington Theological Seminary in 1996, served as associate minister at the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Independence, Mo., which nurtured his love of the Royals and barbecue, then spent 13 years as associate pastor at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Keokuk, Iowa, before becoming pastor

at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk. Hunt’s ministry in each location targeted evangelism, youth and community efforts, including launching the ongoing Common Grounds street ministry still supported by 12 churches in Southeast Iowa. He plans to continue the same work at Salem. “With Salem, I would really like to see us do two things -- to grow spiritually in our commitment to Jesus and the Scriptures, and I would like to see that prompt us to mission and outreach,” Hunt said. “I would like to see us be a blessing to the community and to work together with the community to make Quincy a better place and to help people in need.” He envisions the church working with area nonprofit groups to meet needs and expanding its community outreach, which already includes a Saturday meals program and a new community garden project. The father of two -- son Wesley is a high school senior, and daughter Kendra is a seventh-grader in Keokuk -- Hunt shares their love of music, but he leans toward collecting and reselling vinyl albums, primarily metal and classic rock. Hunt also teaches an ethics class each semester at CulverStockton College in Canton, Mo., that always touches on religion. “The biggest job I have in that class is, I’ve got to help kids go from an opinion to an ethical framework that uses logic and reason to come to a conclusion on an ethical issue,” he said. “People like to have opinions.” Story by Deborah Gertz Husar. Organizing for Social Justice Rev. Dr. William Barber to lead LTS webinar The Rev. Dr. William Barber II, who recently captured national attention with an impassioned message for equality and peace at the Democratic National Convention this summer, will lead a webinar for Lexington Theological Seminary in March. In the webinar, participants will explore some of the historical and modern-day models for building transformative moral movements and how we might reengage and re-shape them in order to support freedom movements today. Rev. Dr. Barber II is the architect of the Forward Together Moral Fusion movement that gained national acclaim with its Moral Monday protests at the North Carolina General Assembly in 2013. He has spoken at hundreds

of national and state conferences since being elected President of the N.C. Conference of NAACP Branches in 2005. His latest book is The Third Reconstruction (Beacon Press, 2016). In this webinar, Dr. Barber will advocate for the reclamation of deeply-held ethical values and will offer suggestions about reaching a critical mass of people in order to build an effective social movement. Individuals and congregations alike will benefit from the insights shared here. To register, visit www.lextheo.edu/webinar-series/ The registration fee is $10 per login. Schade takes part in ministry festival, KCC meeting and more

LTS Library houses Resources Center on Aging in Kentucky

The Rev. Dr. Leah D. Schade, Assistant Professor of Preaching and Worship, preached and presented at Wake Forest University School of Divinity’s “Festival Week of Prophetic Ministry” in November. She served as a panelist for preaching classes, discussed ecological justice issues with students, and preached a sermon where she assumed the character of Water in the story of the Woman at the Well (John 4).

The LTS Library is now housing a Resource Center on Aging in cooperation with the Christian Church in Kentucky and the Christian Care Communities. It is expected that the number of individuals in Kentucky over the age of 65 will increase by more than 72 percent in the next 15 years. A research center would fulfill at least two purposes: to study aging and to discover new ways of ministering to and with our senior adults.

Schade also helped plan and lead worship for the fall meeting of the Kentucky Council of Churches and played the harp for the service.

The project began with a resolution from the 2014 General Assembly of the Christian Church in Kentucky. This resolution called upon the Christian Church in Kentucky, in partnership with the Christian Care Communities, to establish a group to study the following:

At the 2016 Meeting of the Academy of Homiletics in November, Dr. Schade presented a proposal for her upcoming research project entitled “Preaching in the Purple Zone: Challenges and Strategies for the Intersection of Pulpit and Public Square.” She also presented a paper at the Society of Biblical Literature in the Eco-Hermeneutics workgroup entitled, “Climate Change as Unforgivable Sin, Blaspheming the Holy Spirit: An Ecohermeneutical Reading of Matthew 12:31-32.”

Turner, Sumney mark Seminary’s first dual-format Lay School of Theology Dr. Willam Turner, Director of the D.Min. Program & Continuing Education, organized the first online and on-site Lay School of Theology this fall. The threesession course was taught by Dr. Jerry Sumney and focused on “How To Read the Bible As It was Meant to Be Read.” “We had a high attendance or 54 students, with almost half of those attending online,” Turner noted.

Bently discusses interviews Rev. Kris Bently presented a session about interviews with bi-vocational ministers as part of a webinar on BiVocational Ministry for Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill.

1. Seek ways Disciple congregations can better minister to and with active older adults. 2. Develop new strategies for Disciple congregations to better care for frail older adults which will allow them to maintain their independence as long as possible. 3. Strategies to strengthen the partnership of serving and caring for older adults among Disciple congregations, the Christian Church in Kentucky and Christian Care Communities. The subcommittee that included Don Nunnelly, Jackie Ward, Bill Schiphorst and Sharon Fields explored with the LTS Librarian, Dolores Yilibuw, ways in which LTS could be an active partner in this program by establishing A Resource Center on Aging. Former LTS President Wayne Bell has donated his extensive library on aging as the start of a collection in this subject. It is also anticipated to grow in electronic formats. Also, after 150 years, our library collection has reached a new level of growth online. Last fiscal year, our total collection purchase was about 84 percent in electronic formats and 16 percent in print. LTS is doing very well in supplying its online students with needed resources.
