Life Got Easier – Visit Our New Web Site

I

f you’re like me, your kids probably know how to use your smart phone better than you do. Because technology is an integral part of their lives, I do my best to keep up at home and at work. Likewise, at Lexington Family Magazine we want to make sure our online presence is of the same quality we strive for in our print publications. That’s why our website, www.lexingtonfamily.com, recently got a fresh new look and a major functionality upgrade. You can now easily find our directories online – from preschools and private schools to birthday parties and camps. For years, our events calendar has been one of the most popular features in our print publication. Now, for a busy mom’s convenience, our calendar is front and center on the new website. Looking for one of our ancillary magazines like the Relocation Guide or Exceptional Family Magazine? You can request those publications for free with just the

click of a button. Every article featured in the magazine appears on the website, so if you want to revisit a past story, all of our content is archived online. Like many of you, I love the feeling of an actual magazine in my hands, but sometimes I need information quickly and don’t have the magazine with me. Maybe you are out and about with the family and want to find an activity for the kids. Or maybe you’re stuck in a waiting room and want to scroll on your phone through our catalog of interesting articles. That’s where our website comes into play. It is mobile-friendly, so whether you are on a computer, a tablet or a smart phone, you can find what you need. Our monthly magazine is still available at more than 700 locations around Central Kentucky, and our redesigned website is one more way readers can connect with us. So click on www.lexingtonfamily.com and check us out. We think you’ll like what you find. Y

Cooking Together Nourishes Families ost people know that sharing dinner as a family is associated with positive mental and physical health outcomes for children of all ages. To be happy, humans need a sense of belonging, and there’s nothing like the warm experience of sharing a meal to remind children that they have a home.

The more often families get together around the dinner table, the greater the number of benefits: better grades, better choices regarding sex and substance use, less depression, higher self-esteem and better resilience. Conversely, children and teens who had two or fewer family dinners a week were 1.5 times more likely to smoke and use drugs or alcohol. Plus, it’s not only about the food! Making dinner together is a wonderful bonding experience for the whole family. The ritual of preparing meals and eating together in a friendly atmosphere strengthens families. Not only does this time have the benefit of keeping everyone connected, it allows the opportunity to share stories and experiences, and to talk about family history. Share your memories of school, summer vacation, different relatives and friends. Children who know the stories of where they came from have a greater sense of self and feel more deeply connected to the greater world. Make a commitment to break bread together with your family and keep these ideas in mind: t Talk with them about how you would like to enjoy more meals together. t Ask for suggestions on menus. t If dinner doesn’t work for your busy crew, try breakfast or brunch on Sundays. t Work together to create a menu.

t Encourage participation for every age: w Young children can tear lettuce for salad and pour or add measured ingredients. w Older children can chop, peel, measure and use the stove and oven with supervision. w Teens and tweens might enjoy a time or ingredient challenge with “What’s in the Pantry?” like the TV show Iron Chef. t Anyone can set the table, put out place cards, or spread a blanket on the family room floor. t Put dinner on the calendar and keep that time sacred. Other ideas to boost your success: t Add music – and let your children choose it. t Allow plenty of time… rushing takes the fun out of it. t Keep your own good sense of humor. Spills will happen, yes, but they can make good stories and create fun memories. t Sometimes it might not all come together. Keep trying. Over the months and years your efforts will be rewarded. t Start small… even once a week is enough. And have fun! When to Keep a Child Home From School

S

chool is starting all over the U.S. Children are coming together in classrooms to learn‌ and to spread illnesses. Children in schools often get sick. Sometimes they need to stay home. There are three main reasons to keep a child home from school and some guidelines for when this should be done. 1) Children who can make other children sick should stay home. Illnesses with fevers are often contagious. Those with fevers over 100 degrees should stay home until it has broken naturally (without suppression with a fever reducer) for 24 hours. Those with rashes accompanied by fever or behavioral changes should also stay home. Those students with blisters in their mouths that make them drool should stay home from school. Likewise, those who vomit two or more times or have diarrhea that they cannot control should stay home (as should those who have blood or mucus in the diarrhea).

Two-Sport Star Is Tough Act to Follow

A

Haiden Hunt SCHOOL: Frederick Douglass High GRADE: 12 SPORT: Football, baseball ACADEMICS: Haiden has a 4.2 weighted GPA at the Carter G. Woodson Academy at Douglass High PARENTS: Alicia & Harold

s a standout member of the first class that will graduate from the Carter G. Woodson Academy housed at Frederick Douglass High, Haiden Hunt will leave a legacy that is tough to match. Although he weighs only 150 pounds, Haiden, 17, is an All-City baseball and football player. It helps that he runs the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds. Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh recognized him as the fastest man at his football camp. As a wide receiver and kick returner last year, Haiden led the Broncos to a 10-3 record in the school’s first season, beating all the other City public schools along the way. Against Henry Clay, the Broncos trailed with 1:06 to play and faced a fourth down at the Henry Clay 40. Haiden snagged a pass, deftly eluded two defenders and lunged into the end zone for the winning score. He’s been a varsity baseball starter since eighth grade (at his home school, Bryan Station High, until last year). His speed makes him a terror on the base paths. He has lofty goals in each sport for his senior year. Nothing short of State titles in both sports will appease him. In football, his goals are 5 TDs by kick return and 10 by receiving. In baseball, he hopes to lead the City in stolen bases and on-base percentage. College coaches are recruiting him in both sports, and Haiden has been

groomed for college since joining the BMW (Black Males Working) academy, a mentoring and additional study program started by Roszalyn Akins to help African-American boys improve their grades and test scores. The program worked so well, Stu Silberman, Fayette County Schools superintendent at the time, incorporated the program into FCPS as the Carter G. Woodson Academy. Haiden, who has a 4.2 weighted GPA, was a member of the first class as a sixth grader. Each year only 25 or so boys are accepted into the sixth grade of the program, which follows the well principles: Well Dressed, Well Read, Well Spoken, Well Traveled and Well Prepared. Boys wear blazers and ties, and recite the school creed every morning. As for Well Traveled, during spring break of his freshman year, Haiden and some classmates visited Dubai. “Everything was bigger and better there,” he said. “They had a ski resort in a mall in the middle of the desert. They have low crime, gas and college are free, and the food was amazing. I could honestly live there.” But there is much to accomplish stateside first. And the foundation was set at the Carter G. Woodson Academy. “It was very hard at first,” Haiden said. “But it got easier and I realized that it could really benefit me in a positive way if I stick with it.” Y
