About this book My First Alphabet Activity Book Knowing the link between each a-z shape and its sound is the foundation for all good spelling. But plain black letters do not attract children. So Letterland gives them colour and life, inviting children’s curiosity, motivating them to discover their sounds and how to string them together to make simple words. With the help of the friendly Letterland characters, this book enables you as a parent or helper to make this first stage of alphabet learning (called phonics) appealing to share with your child. Letter sounds Learning to get all 26 sounds linked to exactly the right 26 letter shapes can be difficult. So Letterland provides a shortcut. It is called the Letterland Sounds Trick.

The Letterland Sounds Trick How to discover each letter sound a...

The first sound you make when you START to say any Letterlander’s name is exactly the sound that letter makes in most words!

How to make the best use of this book • Read out the sentence at the top of the first page, introducing the Letterland character. Say, “Now let’s discover her sound. It’s at the start of her name, Annie Apple, a. So that’s the sound she makes in words, a!” • Have fun doing the action trick together while you both say her sound several more times: “a, a, a, a, a.” • Reread the sentence at the top, this time pointing to each word. • Point to the coloured letters as you both say each example word at the bottom. • Show your child how to point to each example word, and then touch the object in the main picture. • Put him or her in charge of ticking each box after finding the objects. • Let your child enjoy colouring in the picture while you name the objects again. • A little and often is best. Each time you come back to this book, go over some of the earlier pages again before using the same approach for a new page.
