How to use this book Take a journey through the Letterland alphabet and encounter the 100 most frequently used words in the English language. These are words that children are expected to know by the end of their first year at school. By using this book to become familiar with reading and writing these words your child will have a really good head start when learning to read. Each page has a number of words to trace over and the pages are wipe-clean so your child can write over the words with the special pen over and over again. The letter shapes are dotted with arrows showing the correct movement pathways. By helping your child to practice writing words with the correct movements you will be ensuring that when moving on to joined up writing the transition will be smooth and easy. Some of the words are quite tricky to spell, but by placing the words in playful scenarios with the Letterland characters, these spellings become more memorable. The words are ordered alphabetically, but not all words start with the Letterland characters sound. For example, Annie Apple says ‘a’ in words like ‘and’, but you will not hear her sound in words like ‘all’. If you are familiar with the Letterland stories you might like to spot other characters in the backgrounds providing clues to the different sounds and spelling patterns.
