How to use this book This Letterland Early Years Word Book allows children to start their own word collections and acquire basic dictionary skills. The alphabet is located on the edge of each page for ease of finding and placing words.

The Letterland characters are located at the top of each page, with dotted lines reminding children how to form the letter shapes. Simple example words are given on each page to trace over. The words in the left-hand column are all ‘decodable’, that is they can be sounded out using the first sounds children learn for a-z. The words in the right-hand column are all high-frequency words – the most common words that children are expected to know by the end of their first year in school. There are also helpful illustrations on each page of objects that start with the target letter sound.

Children can add to this dictionary whenever they come across a new word they want to remember how to spell. Their dictionary will grow as they learn!
