Big Picture Code Cards Capital A-Z The Capital Letter Pictograms A-Z or a-z first? Different educational systems make different choices. Letterland teaching is flexible, so you can choose either A-Z or a-z first to suit your circumstances. Given that there is both a visual and - more powerful - an ideational link between every lower case letter and capital letter shape, you are likely to find that it is easier, more efficient and more effective to teach them together. Your follow-up activities can then focus on whichever set of shapes you prefer. A handy reminder of the ideational link between each capital/lower case pair is provided on the reverse side of each capital letter card. The Letterland Early Years Handbook, Letterland Teacher’s Guide, Letterland ABC book and Letterland Living ABC software all support these quick connections.

Ideas for Using the Big Picture Code Cards: A-Z You will find many ways to create activities around the use of these cards. These are just a few examples. Shape Associations • Shape Matching Each child holds a capital letter card. They take turns finding ‘their’ capital letter in the alphabetical order on the Letterland Classroom Wall Frieze, or the Letterland Class Poster. • Discovery Find out how many capital letters have a different shape from the lower case versions on the frieze. Talk about the differences and explain Letterland story-like reasons why. Phonemic Awareness • Sound/Symbol Match Give each child a card. Say a name, for example, ‘David’. Everyone listens. The child holding the D card displays it to the class saying, "I’m Dippy Duck looking out of my duck door. I start David’s name like this, D…D…D…David!"

Phonemic Awareness (continued) • Link A-Z and a-z (Use this A-Z set and the Letterland Big Picture Code Cards: a-z ). Hand out some capital/small letter pairs. You say a word: for example, “milk”. The two children holding the M and m cards stand up and display the pair to the class. All say "Mmmm!" • Assembly or parent presentation Each child holds a pair (for example, a with A just behind it). The child says, "Hello, I’m Annie Apple. I say ˘ in words like ant, ˘ apple ˘ ˘ ‘a…’ and acrobat. (Places capital letter card in front). And when I can start an important word or sentence I hop on to ˘ my Applestand to say ‘a…’." Long Vowels • 5 Vowel Men These cards represent the five long vowels ‘aee’, ‘ee’, ‘iee’, ‘oh’ and ‘you’. They are: Mr A, the Apron Man, Mr E, the Easy Magic Man, Mr I, the Ice cream Man, Mr O, the Old Man and Mr U, the Uniform Man. Use them for spelling out names (important words). For example, not Alice but Amy, not Edward but Eve, not Ingrid but Ivy, not Oliver but Oakley, not Unwin but United States. Irregular Words • For irregular words and names, simply use the plain sides of either the capital or lower case cards. For each irregular part of a word just explain, "We may learn a special story later for this new sound, (e.g. Arthur, Ernie, Ursula). Meanwhile we don’t have a picture for it."

When Mr A wants to say his name ‘A!’, at the start of an important word he stands beside his capital letter shape. (This is one of his Applestands which he clears and uses as an Apronstand.)
