We are well into the new year, and for many of us well into winter. I find that this means I am scrapbooking more often, whiling away the cold and dreary days at my craft table. It is a great time to try new techniques, because I do have a little more time to play. This is what happened last winter when I began to dabble in mixed media techniques. I was seeing some of these techniques online and while I really didn’t want to begin Art Journaling or creating canvases, I was intrigued. Once I realized that I could incorporate many of these techniques and products onto my layouts, I began experimenting! Do you find that you have more time to play this time of year? What are you creating? I have also been working on this publication and am loving what we are bringing to you. This time around we are featuring a variety of techniques. Grab your coffee, curl up in your favorite chair and enjoy!

Meet Brandi Matos, the winner of our Cover Girl search for our second issue. “Hello!!! My name is Brandi Matos and I am just another obsessed crafter with a bad habit for paper crafting! I am a stay-at-home mother of two beautiful girls and wife to the world's most amazing husband (no really, he is!)!!! We live smack-dab in the middle of the "Sunshine" state (Tampa, Florida) where we typically see only two seasons a year: Spring and Summer! I literally "fell" into crafting merely by accident after browsing the aisles of a local scrapbook store a couple of years ago. I was on the hunt for supplies to make my daughter's "chore" chart and absolutely fell in love with all the wonders of scrapbooking!!! I never realized that there was an entire world of crafters out there. It AMAZED me! I have found my true passion in this hobby and put my all into each and every project I make!

I started scrapbooking in: “I started scrapbooking about two years ago after putting together some chore charts for my daughter. One stop at a craft store to pick up supplies and I was done for! “ My scrap item must have is: “Absolutely have to have a paper cutter. I can't cut a straight line even if it's drawn on the paper!!! I also love and use distress ink on nearly everything I make. It just doesn't look "complete" without it!” What I love most about this hobby is: “The freedom!!! There truly are no mistakes in crafting! Everything is "fixable" with added embellishing and sometimes leaving it alone is the best! There are endless possibilities with what you can do with a little paper and I plan to learn as much as possible!” Favorite source of inspiration: I “I typically start with a sketch... Let's Get Sketchy has some of the best! From there, I might browse images on the web through my search engine or even Pinterest. I like to draw inspiration from a number of places, not just one particular project or page!” What I love most about LGS is: “The versatility of the sketches! They tend to be pretty simple which allows you to be more creative! The sketches really do provide you with a "starting point"... Your creativity combined with the sketch allow you to make something truly fabulous!”

Hi Everyone. I live in Alberta, Canada and have been scrapbooking for about 20 years, back in the day of scissors and stickers. I have been married almost 30 years and am a mom to two wonderful children and two rambunctious puppies. I love to read, take walks, play the piano and spend time with my family and friends. Most days you can find me in my studio covered in glue and paper!!

I started scrapping in: 1992. My scrap items must have: Flowers, Ink, an a distress tool What I love most about this hobby: That each persons style is unique. There is no right or wrong way to scrap! My first design team: Scrap A Little in 2010. I remember applying and then waiting anxiously for the email. Advice for design teams: Don't second guess yourself, take a chance and apply.

My name is Michelle. I’m happily married to my wonderfully supportive husband John, and we have one daughter Makara. My family feature throughout my work, they are my world. I discovered scrapbooking when my daughter was born, but only really became serious about 1½ years ago. There’s so much to learn and discover. I’m not sure if I have a set style, however I tend to lean towards layering and clustering. I think it often depends on my mood, the subject, or challenge involved. I do something scrap related almost every day. I really enjoy the creative outlet, while documenting all parts of our life. I started scrapbooking in: 2000. Scrap must haves: A hot glue gun and Fiskars Softtouch spring action scissors. What I love most about this hobby: The gorgeous products and friendly online communities My favorite sources of inspiration are: Galleries, blogs, Pinterest and Youtube; inspiration is everywhere. My first Design Team: Let’s Get Sketchy was the first team that I applied for a got accepted! Design Team advice: Simply go for it.

My name is Bev Code. I am a wife, mother and Gramma; who now enjoys being retired and has time to scrap anytime I like. I spend time between my main home in Canada and the sunny south of Florida, in the winter months. My favorite times are spent with family and friends enjoying each other’s company. Most of these life events are documented on my scrapbooking pages. I started 2009.

in:

Scrap item must haves: Kreaxions Circle Cutter, tweezers, Fiskars Finger Swivel Knife, 3 in 1 Beacon glue and paper trimmer. What I love most about this hobby is: Viewing & preserving family photos. Favorite sources of inspiration: Facebook, Pinterest, forums, galleries and DT inspirations. How did you get on your first design team? I applied to the amazing Sketch blog of Helen Croft and from there never looked back.

Hello!! My name is Carla Ironside and I live in Alberta, Canada. I am a wife, mom of two great kiddos, a proud cancer survivor, a Chartered Accountant by profession, and a Close to My Heart consultant for the last 5 years. My paper crafting hobby truly became my passion when I entered the blogging world about 4 years ago! I started scrapbooking in: 2001 My scrap item must have is: An ATG Tape Runner! What I love most about this hobby is: It gives me a creative outlet which I find is great for stress relief. Favorite source of inspiration is: The blogosphere, I follow countless crafty blogs! First design team: Scrap it With a Song, I totally went out of my comfort zone to put my work 'out there' and was shocked & thrilled to make the team. Design Team advice: Don't try to change your work to be what you think teams are looking for - follow your own style and make layouts you love - eventually you'll find the team that fits you!

Hi there! My name is Michiyo Ito. My husband and I live in Japan along with our precious son, who was born in 2006. I started scrapbooking to make him an album. My son is the main feature of my layouts. He gives me lots of inspiration. I typically create 12 x 12 layouts. I like to make fun layouts with beautiful colors. Scrapbooking has brought me so much, and widened my world. Now, it is indispensable in my life. My blog address: http://oh-myhappyboy.cocolog-nifty.com/blog/

I started scrapbooking in 2006. I started scrapbooking in 2006, after the birth of my son, to create an album to house the many photographs of him My scrapbooking must haves are Colorful papers, flowers, ribbon and pearls. What I love most about this hobby is Being able to forget about daily chores and just create beautiful pages.

This hobby also allows you to form precious memories, as you can meet many new friends through scrapbooking. Inspiration: Fellow scrapbookers who enjoy scrapbooking as much as I do. What I love most about LGS: The sketches because they inspired me to always create something new.

TECHNIQUE My layout incorporates a pocket, which I created with my photograph and patterned paper. To start, I cut both my photo and my striped patterned paper using a Stampin’ Up Top-note die. Then, I trimmed off the top of my photo and adhered it to the striped die cut, just along the two sides and the bottom to form a pocket. I added my journaling onto a tag and inserted it into the pocket. There by creating a pocket design element for my page. Pockets can also be used to stash memorabilia or to hold an extra photo or three!

Titles are an important part of our pages, along with the journaling. When I am stuck, I look to poems, songs, quotes and catch phrases, for inspiration. Sometimes we just don’t have the words to describe what we want to say. A song or poem, for instance, may already have the words we are feeling. Thus taking away a lot of the stress we have when trying to think of a title. For my layout, I used a poem for both the title and the journaling. The poem is ‘Child of my child’, and describes exactly the feelings I feel when I am with my grandchildren. For this particular poem, the author is unknown. However, we should try to remember to give credit to the person who has created the piece of work used. I hope this will help you the next time you are struggling with thinking of a title.

Die cuts are a great way to add interest to your scrapbook pages. You can often purchase die cuts that coordinate with the papers you love, or you can save a bit of money and create your own die cuts, using metal dies, a die cutting machine or even templates. Layering die cuts and adding dimensional adhesive are a great way to add extra ‘wow factor’ to your projects. ~Laura

TECHNIQUE Paint can be added to our layouts using a variety of techniques. I have added paint to this layout using a mask (that I cut with my Silhouette Cameo machine) and a daubing motion with a foam brush. Then I used the same foam brush to paint around the edges of the papers, photo and embellishments that I added to my page. These techniques add both interest and a cohesive look to my page.

Most often taken with a cell phone, the “selfie” is one of the most popular styles of self-portrait taken right now and our most popular entry for this issue! There are websites cropping up everywhere with tips about how to get the perfect selfie and on selfie etiquette. The word “selfie” was chronicled as being the “word of the year” in late 2013, by the Oxford English Dictionary. So it is no surprise that we scrapbookers are using this style of photograph on our pages. ~ Laura

Most often, the type of memorabilia I add to my layouts are my ticket stubs from events that we attend. It is a great way for me to remember dates, times and places. It is also the most common item kept by us memory keepers. For this particular layout, I simply tucked our ticket stubs under my photo. This way they are incorporated into my overall design and are used similarly to an embellishment, like a tag.

Are you a mixed media scrapbooker? Does the thought of that frighten you? Well, if you use a variety of art mediums on your layouts then you are a mixed media artist. Why add mediums like paint, Gesso, ink, mist or any other mixed media type of product to your scrapbook page? Well the answer is simple, why not? Color, texture and dimension all add interest to our layouts. We can also use these products to dress up a plain background or dress down a rather bold background, thus effectively creating a base for our photos to settle on. Or, conversely, we can use them to create accents on our pages. Either technique helps to direct the eye to our photos, which are the true focal point of our pages. Many of the application techniques for these products are quick and easy. By flicking, spreading, sponging or using masks, for example, we can quite easily achieve a variety looks from layout to layout. This also allows us more versatility for our investment into these products. If you are concerned that your pages will no longer feel like “you”, don’t be, you can stay true to your own personal style, whether you are a clean and simple scrapper or one that prefers a more “messy” or “intense” look, there is a mixed media technique for you. So why not have some fun with your next creation and try out a little mixed media?

What is Project Life? According to Becky Higgins, “Project Life® is a solution-based approach to scrapbooking that was created to simplify the process in order to allow you more time to enjoy life! It requires no glue, no scissors, no tools, and no skills of any kind. The design of our products takes the guess work out of layout design so that you can focus on recording your everyday moments through your photos and journaling. The simple design is stylish and makes it possible for you to complete more pages in less time.” http://beckyhiggins.com/category/projectlife/. To me, Project Life is whatever you need it to be. I think of it as an easier way to get those photos scrapped and into albums. The organization and design that is Project Life is already figured out for you, there is no stress about where to place photos, which papers to use, techniques to incorporate, and products to coordinate. The work is done. You just add your photos and journaling and voila you are done! From my understanding, how you organize your PL is up to you. Some people only document special occasions. Some document everyday life. Some do a 2-page spread every week, some do a spread a month. There are no set rules to documenting. You just do! Project Life was created to simplify the process of getting those photos off cell phones and out of boxes and into those albums.

What do you need to get started?  12x12 Binder ®  Project Life Core Kit (optional)  Photo Pocket Pages  Photo (4x6 are best)

If you take pictures using your phone, if you turn the phone horizontally these pictures fits perfectly into the Design A pockets. There are also Design D pockets made for vertical photos. In addition to the items listed above, you can get creative and add your own flair with extra embellishments. I hope I have provided some useful information to get you started with your PL. If you have been thinking about doing it but have not started yet, now is the perfect time with 2014 just beginning. I did not do PL last year but I am starting fresh in 2014, so let’s do it together! Smooches!

TECHNIQUE

Gelatos are a perfectly easy, way to add some mixed media to your page. Gelatos look like a crayon and with the addition of a little water they create a watercolor look. A pack of gelatos looks like this:

Here is a quick tutorial on the basic application of gelatos to a project: As smaller projects are often easier to start when trying something new I will show you how to customize a printable. I chose a white printable with the word JOY on it to start with, from Two Peas in a bucket I wanted to add my own colors to liven it up, I chose a reddish-orange and a pink, to match the project I wanted to create. First I applied the gelatos, working from side to side.

Next, I added water with a paint brush. Here, is where I first got frustrated. I was using the brush that came in the gelato package; however, these bristles were a bit rough and were pulling up the top layer of the paper. I find just a soft paintbrush works the best. After wetting it down and blending it bit it looked like this:

As you can see the paper curled up a bit, however, after letting it try it was relatively flat and looked like this: If the edges are still too curled, you could add double sided tape and frame your tag/page with a slightly larger piece of paper. Your printable is ready to put on a page! I often use gelatos to customize die cuts as well.

TECHNIQUE DOODLING / ZENTANGLE... YOU CAN DO IT Doodling is one of the easiest and cheapest things to do. It is described as scribbling aimlessly. Remember doodling is supposed to look imperfect. It's just a doodle not a drawing masterpiece. It's supposed to be fun. Doodling is pen work that can be added to the whole page with doodles and accents or just journaling. START with some basic lines over and over. Now change direction. Add some waves to the lines.. DO IT QUICKLY. Do swirls, curves, zigzags, loops and random patterns. Try some shapes like hearts, stars, diamonds, flowers and circles. After you have a shape try adding lines or dots to it. Take a die cut and add dots, lines or circles. ADD lines to corners, around things or fill shapes. Here is a sample 12x12 page of doodles just to give you an idea of some of the options you have... and many more once you try this on your own. You can even make all your own a ccents... Opposed to purchasing them. I made the banner, flag and the ticket.

On my layout, I used paint to doodle accents around the two corners of the photo. I cut my own ticket from black and then used white gel pen to add details to it and numbers. Made the little flag accents. I added three background accents, two stamps and some spray. The banner was cut out and I added white gel pen accents to every piece and doodled the loops to suspend the banner. Doodling added: corners, music notes, title, brackets, waves, flourish and dots. Now to expand just a bit more lets throw in some information about ZENTANGLE.速 The Zentangle method is an easy to learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It is the process of simple deliberate strokes which build on each other in beautiful, mesmerizing and surprising ways. When doing this art form just remember it's not perfect .. have fun and experiment.. and it's so easy. http://www.zentangle.com/
