caribou ranch collection of lucy and james william guercio

Chicago native James W. Guercio, a guitarist, bass player, arranger and composer, started in the music business with Dick Clark in 1962. He toured and performed with Gene Pitney, Brian Hyland, Del Shannon, Chuck Berry, Bobby Darin and Chad & Jeremy. He was an original guitarist with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention and produced, arranged and composed numerous hits for Chad & Jeremy and the Buckinghams. Mr. Guercio received a Grammy Award for his work as a music producer on the 1970 Album of the Year, Blood, Sweat & Tears. In 1971, Mr. Guercio purchased property north of Nederland, Colorado to build what would become the legendary Caribou Ranch.

In Guercio’s barn turned studio, Joe Walsh recorded the first album that came out of Caribou Ranch, the eponymous 1972 Barnstorm. The barn conversion was not yet complete, but the dirt floors were only a tribute to the remote, creative ambiance. “Rocky Mountain Way” was the first hit recorded at Caribou, and soon after word got out that Guercio had created a state of the art recording studio in an acoustically perfect barn. At 8600 feet in the Rocky Mountains, Guercio’s vision became the first destination recording studio where rock ‘n roll history was made.

Chicago, Stephen Stills, Rick Derringer, Michael Jackson, U2, Sheena Easton, Chic Corea, Heart, Peter Frampton, Phil Collins, Earth, Wind & Fire, Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Billy Joel, Elton John, Carole King, John Lennon, The Beach Boys, Waylon Jennings, Supertramp, Jeff Beck, Manassas, War, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Steve Martin were among the many Caribou Ranch guests.

In addition to owning and operating the recording studio, James W. Guercio produced and directed Electra Glide in Blue, starring Robert Blake. The film was the American entry in the 1973 Cannes Film Festival.

In 1986 Guercio was the primary founder and shareholder of Country Music Television, which was sold to Gaylord/Westinghouse in 1991. In 1990 the Guercios started acquiring property in southeastern Montana with a current portfolio of over 60,000 acres.

James William and Lucy Angle Guercio have been married for over 40 years and reside in Boulder, Colorado. Together with their three children, they continue to curate and preserve the musical history of Caribou Ranch. Caribou Ranch will be inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame along with Joe Walsh & Barnstorm and Dan Fogelberg in 2015.

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is honored to conduct the sale of property from the celebrated Caribou Ranch as well as property from the private collection of Lucy and James W. Guercio.

ouray

The accommodations at Caribou Ranch for visiting artists and their families were both rustic and luxurious. Settled in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, the surroundings offered a peace and calm not often prevalent for working musicians. Many found it idyllic for writing and rehearsing. Unlike anywhere else, it’s no surprise that Caribou Ranch quickly established a reputation for being a wonderful place to record. The guest cabins were a group of fully restored log buildings clustered around the original lodge and mess hall. There were a total of five guest cabins, each named after important Native American leaders including Running Bear, Chipeta, Wigwam, Red Wing and Ouray. Both the design and names are reflective of the Ranch’s century old heritage.

Ouray became known as the premiere cabin where many top artists preferred to stay due to its well-appointed, larger rooms and close proximity to the studio. Many recording artists, producers, actors and models enjoyed the casual comforts of Ouray including Elton John, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Kris Kristofferson, Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon Jennings, Michael Douglas, Steve Martin, Steven Stills, Rod Stewart, J. Geils, Frank Zappa, George Martin, Michael Brewer, David Cassidy, Twiggy, Chick Corea, Kiki Dee, members of Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Van Morrison and many more.

Located in Ouray, the Mm. Knabe & Co. baby grand piano, circa 1925, is credited as perhaps the most utilized piano for writing hits on the ranch. Almost every recording artist who stayed in Ouray took a turn on this piano either writing or rehearsing.

It was in Ouray where John Lennon stayed with May Pang during his infamous “lost weekend.” Lennon was there to contribute to Elton John’s recording of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

Michael Jackson was a young man at the pinnacle of his career when he stayed at Caribou Ranch, recording vocals and relaxing during the Denver leg of The Jacksons Victory Tour. Michael Jackson was possibly the most popular man in the world at the time, but at Caribou he was just Michael— free to wander the grounds, ride horses and walk to the studio away from the paparazzi and his ever present body guards.

Ouray was home to many celebrities visiting Caribou Ranch, but its charm and sense of creative freedom was part of the much larger atmosphere shared by and resonated throughout the entire compound. No pretenses. No red carpet. Only the calm and community that came from an appreciation for the ranch and the music that came from it.

lodge / mess hall

Those who visited Caribou Ranch had their choice of several guest cabins, each with their own character and attributes. The communal Lodge was rustically decorated with a virtual forest of taxidermy mounts leaving little wall space for anything else. The great room was large and open, an atrium that opened to the second floor housing six loft style bedrooms. Among other four-legged taxidermy was a large standing grizzly bear presented to Guercio by a friend in lieu of a debt payment. The bear made its way into most of the guests’ photographic memories from their time at the ranch. The Lodge

“It was quite the place. Jimmy took care of you. The one thing I remember is that the meals were incredible. It was five-star dining up there. And the Studio itself, you were isolated. You were there to do business. You were there to work.” - Richie Furay – buffalo springfield

was consistently requested by musicians and groups who wanted to stay together in one cabin, seeking a festive and collaborative atmosphere. Billy Joel stayed in the Lodge’s second floor front bedroom because of its fantastic views. In addition, he got to partake in the camaraderie and be a part of the action with his band mates.

Al Green and his party also stayed at the Lodge while he was filming a television special with the band Chicago at Caribou Ranch in 1973. The Mess Hall was adjacent to the Lodge, and the two buildings were connected by an expansive deck complete with Adirondack style picnic chairs, benches and tables. The Mess Hall was the meeting place every evening for all guests on the ranch. Guests would come for an a la carte breakfast or lunch, and late night recording sessions often left the Mess Hall relatively abandoned some mornings. When the dinner bell rang, however, no matter where guests were or what they were doing, they made their way to the Mess Hall for a gourmet dinner. On nice evenings in the summer and fall the deck often turned into the spot for an outdoor jam session. In 1974 Chicago recorded a television special “Meanwhile Back at the Ranch at Caribou Ranch.

recording studio

After James W. Guercio acquired Caribou Ranch he set out to build his dream studio. Despite resistance from his contemporaries, who were unconvinced of the need to travel into the mountains to record, Guercio remained determined. So much so that he contracted acoustical genius Tom Hidley, co-founder of TTG in Los Angeles, to design the studio and control room. Hidley was given a mandate from Guercio to turn the barn into a world-class recording studio that resonated with musicians while offering incomparable comfort. He wanted a studio with character.

“Tom Hidley has built about two-hundred of the most important studios all over the world. We cannot name them all, but names like ‘Caribou Ranch’, ‘Elektra’, ‘Strawberry’, ‘Manor’ and ‘Montreux’ speak for themselves.” - Billboard Magazine, December 3, 1977

Mr. Guercio’s vision was realized in Caribou Ranch—a state of the art recording studio tucked in the remoteness of mountains and far away from the distractions generally associated with recording studios of big cities. But that didn’t mean it didn’t come with experimentation. Guercio purchased a $250,000 custom made Olive mixing board that was ahead of its time. The first two records cut on it were Chicago’s “Feelin’ Stronger Everyday” and “Just You ‘n’ Me.” Both became number one songs.

“ You could sing an octave higher. In the beginning we never knew that the sound was different at that elevation. We didn’t understand this but the engineers all had theories…” - james w. guercio

Regardless, the new technology was foreign and made some producers question their sound literacy in equipment. The board was eventually retired and replaced with a Neve board previously owned by Beatles producer, George Martin. Aside from the equipment used, high elevation had its own effect. An unforeseen benefit of building at 8600 feet was the effect of altitude on sound. During its early history, Barnstorm producer Bill Szymczyk made Rick Derringer’s All American Boy and the hit single “Rock & Roll, Hoochie Koo” at Caribou Ranch. Recording artists like Elton John were listening to early Caribou songs wanting to create that sound in their own music. Elton John’s 1974 album Caribou was recorded at and named after the studio where his next two albums would also be recorded: Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and Rock of the Westies. The group Chicago, managed by Guercio, recorded five studio albums at Caribou. Earth, Wind & Fire recorded two of their albums there, including 1974’s Open Our Eyes and the 1975 Grammy winning That’s the Way of the World. In March 1985, Amy Grant recorded her platinum-certified, breakthrough album Unguarded, one of 4 albums Grant recorded at the Ranch. The studio hosted over 178 musicians during its tenure producing 45 top ten albums, 18 Grammys and 20 number-one Billboard Hits, including “If You Leave Me Now” for which Jim Guercio won a Grammy for Best Arrangement in 1976. In 1985 a fire destroyed the control room and the studio complex was shut down and never rebuilt.

wigwam, redwing and running bear

There were three smaller guest cabins on the ranch where a number of celebrities stayed over the years. Stevie Nicks, Tanya Tucker, Tom Petty, Carl Wilson and his wife Gina Martin Wilson, Morris White and Tony Wilson all stayed in Wigwam. Amy Grant wrote several hits on the small upright piano located in Wigwam. Jimmy Pankow, the trombone player from the band Chicago, wrote many of the horn charts in Wigwam during several different visits to the ranch.

“It was almost too nice to record. We’d be standing around the studio asking, ‘Where’s the harmonica player?’ — ‘He’s fishing.’ ‘What about the bass player, can you get him off that horse?’ ‘Will the singer be through swimming in time to do these overdubs?’” - John McEuen, member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

According to Earth, Wind & Fire producer Charles Stepney, Running Bear, the oldest cabin on the ranch, was haunted. He claimed to see a ghost during one of his trips to Caribou.

Other guests who stayed in Running Bear include America, Ricky Nelson, George Martin, Rick Derringer, Joni Mitchell, Tony Orlando, Carole King and Rick Davies from the band Supertramp. Eddie Rabbitt liked to stay in Running Bear when he was at Caribou where he recorded such hits as “Step by Step,” “I Love a Rainy Night,” and “Driving My Life Away.”

Peter Cetera was one of the notable guests who stayed in Redwing. It was a small cabin up the hill on the ranch and was often home to some of the crews, entourage and family when accompanying a principal musician. Caribou Ranch was isolated, but the bands and their friends and families had full access to all the accomodations Caribou had to offer. There were plenty of activities for everyone such as snowmobiling, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, cross country skiing and more.

Guide for Prospective Buyers Conditions of Sale Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. encourages all prospective buyers to read the Conditions of Sale printed in this catalogue. Exhibitions Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. recommends that all prospective buyers attend the pre-sale exhibition prior to the auction. Staff members are available at our pre-sale exhibitions to advise prospective buyers on particular objects or on any aspect of the bidding process. Estimates Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. provides catalogue descriptions and pre-auction estimates for each lot included in the sale. These estimates are a guide for prospective bidders. They are not definitive. All pre-sale estimates are subject to revision. Condition Reports We are happy to provide a condition report for lots with a low estimate of $300 and above. Nevertheless, intending buyers are reminded that condition reports are statements of our opinion only, and that each lot is sold “AS IS,” per our Conditions of Sale, as outlined in the back of this catalogue. All lots should be viewed personally by prospective buyers or their agents to evaluate the condition of the property offered for sale due to the highly subjective nature of condition reports. In addition to the hammer price, the buyer agrees to pay Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. a buyer’s premium as well as any applicable taxes.

Conditions of Sale LESLIE HINDMAN AUCTIONEERS, INC. AS AGENT The lots listed in this catalogue will be offered by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. as owner or as agent for consignor(s) subject to the following terms and conditions. By bidding at auction you agree to be bound by these Conditions of Sale.

BEFORE THE SALE Prospective buyers are strongly advised to personally examine any property in which they are interested before the auction takes place. Condition reports are usually available on request, on lots with a low estimate of $300 and above. All lots are sold “AS IS” and without recourse and neither Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. nor its consignor(s) makes any warranties or representations, express or implied with respect to such lots. Neither Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. nor its consignor(s) makes any express or implied warranty or representation of any kind or nature with respect to merchantability, fitness for purpose, correctness of the catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, material, genuineness, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, exhibitions, literature or historical significance of any lot sold. The absence of any reference to the condition of a lot does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. No statement, whether written or oral, and whether made in the catalogue, or in supplements to the catalogue, an advertisement, a bill of sale, a salesroom posting or announcement, the remarks of an auctioneer, or otherwise, shall be deemed to create any warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. and its consignor(s) make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Leslie Hindman Auctioneers Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in the catalogue.

AT THE SALE Refusal of Admission Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. has the right, at our complete discretion, to refuse admission to the premises or participation in any auction and to reject any bid. Registration before Bidding A prospective buyer must complete and sign a registration form and provide identification before bidding. We may require bank or other financial references. Bidding as Principal When making a bid, a bidder is accepting personal liability to pay the purchase price, including the buyer’s premium, all applicable taxes and all other applicable charges, unless it has been explicitly agreed upon in writing with Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. before the commencement of the sale that the bidder is acting as agent on behalf of an identified third party acceptable to Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc., and that Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. will only look to the principal for payment. Absentee Bids We will use reasonable efforts to carry out written bids given to us at least 24 hours prior to the sale for the convenience of clients who are not present at the auction in person, by an agent or by telephone. Bids must be placed in U.S. dollars. If we receive written bids on a particular lot for identical amounts, and these are the highest bids on the lot at the auction, it will be sold to the person whose written bid was received and accepted first. Execution of written bids is a free service undertaken subject to other commitments at the time of the sale and we do not accept liability for failing to execute a written bid or for errors and omissions in connection with the written bid. Telephone Bids On lots with a low estimate of $300 and above and if a prospective buyer makes arrangements with us prior to the commencement of the sale we will use reasonable efforts to contact them to enable them to participate in the bidding by telephone and we do not accept liability for failure to do so or for errors and omissions in connection with telephone bidding. These telephone bids may be recorded at the discretion of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. Online Bids

LESLIE HINDMAN AUCTIONEERS

We will use reasonable efforts to carry out online bids and do not accept liability for equipment failure, inability to access the Internet or software malfunctions related to the execution of online bids.

Reserves Some lots in the sale are subject to a reserve which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate of the lot. Reserves are agreed upon with consignors or, in the absence thereof, the absolute discretion of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. The auctioneer may open the bidding on any lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may continue to bid on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. With respect to lots that are offered without reserve, unless there are already competing bids, the auctioneer, in his or her discretion, will generally open the bidding at half of the low estimate for the lot. In the absence of a bid at that level, the auctioneer may proceed backwards at his or her discretion until a bid is recognized, and then continue up from that amount. Auctioneer’s Discretion The auctioneer has the right at his or her absolute and sole discretion to refuse any bid, to advance the bidding in such a manner as he or she may decide, to withdraw any lot, and in the case of error or dispute, and whether during or after the sale, to determine the successful bidder, to continue the bidding, to cancel the sale or to reoffer and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sale record is conclusive. Successful Bid The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser. In the case of a tie bid, the winning bidder will determined by the auctioneer at his or her sole discretion. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer has final discretion to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. sale record shall be conclusive. Title passes upon the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer to the highest acknowledged bidder subject to the Conditions of Sale set forth herein, and the bidder assumes full risk and responsibility.
