My name is Leo Lucas, I was invited to create a visual research book with a final outcome that explore London as visual designer using different techniques, processes and researches to communicate the rich diversity and life of this immense city. In help to create this book I also attended thirteen inspiring workshops, which I had organized into chapters. After these workshops I walked around London with my humble camera trying to capture the essence of this immense twenty-four-hours-super-city that has diverse cultures, believes, languages and even moods. From the beginning, I decide to visually investigate places, not visited by millions of tourists or buildings with rich heritage. I wanted to visit places where may not even real Londoners know much about. Maybe somewhere, where significant changes will occur in the near future, the Olympic Park of 2012 for example (access denied), or East London. I also observed many large red objects when walking around London, which led me towards my first finding. A bright red corner called The Lord Napier that was a pub located at White Post Lane, which was a very dense industrial zone in the 1960’s. Now a day, many buildings on this street are ready to be demolish, others have been occupied by squatters and very few are still open for business. Some buildings and walls around White Post Lane are complete graffitied, with a rebel style. Some locations reminded me of the late 70’s or mid 80’s, when “Punks” (style) were everywhere around London. In the end of the White Post Lane, there is a enormous building site, the 2012 Olympic Park, that might change the face of East London. Oh, yeah! ‘Regeneration’ is the word. Focusing on street art many corners and walls in that area may not be standing still next time I visit them. And it made me imagine how it all would affect the local community of E9 postcode. In my mind this project will take more than few years and I wonder how that whole area would looks like in three or five years from now. In this project, I emphasised images of ‘Street Arts’ in a area that many changes will occur by 2012. My final outcome is a tribute to those walls. I intend to use what I call semi-pan photography combined with ‘L’ shape poster to accentuate the fact of all images are from corners. Semi-pan is a term I use for portrait images taken and put side by side together without any cropping with a minimum of five images merging into a wider image. In this project I carefully positioned five or more images, which when merged, it forms one single image of one single corner of White Post Lane, E9, London. (Ah! The River Thames. Geographically and historically the River Thames has great significance how London evolved over the years. Graphically, it has a interesting ‘s’ shape in the East part of the city, which called my attention. Among my findings I discovered where the idea of the Oyster symbol (last image of this chapter) originated from.

City Visit The Building Centre. This was a guided trip visiting some very interesting places around central London. The first stop point was The Building Centre, which has a giant London city built in miniature size (beautiful). Then we visit Russel Square and St. Pancreas Station. After that I went to visit others big buildings around London.

Bending Walls. Considering London’s 2012 Olympic Games area regeneration, many corners and walls within the E9 postcode area may not be standing next time I visit them. This project emphasises images of ‘Street Arts’ around the 2012 Olympic Games area, where inexplicable changes is to occur in the near future. The final outcome is a tribute to those vandalised walls. This project used many photographs combined into a single image. And made various A3 poster out of it, which can be bendable to accentuate the fact of all images are from corners. The concept of walls that can be bend is only a partial attraction of this project. Different angles, varied views and multiple perspectives from the same image is another. But the most peculiar aspect of this project is the fact of knowing those wall would probably not being standing there in the future, trading its space and place for the London’s 2012 Olympic Park saga or perhaps a very needed regeneration of the “East London Forgotten Corners”.
