In one way or another I believe that somehow the formats given to this project (poster, books, screen based, maps, font, printed matter or magazines) will overlap each other, forming one multi-informational outcome. The randomness in which any of the sixteen books can be chosen, read and confined into a box, is part of the interaction factor I want to achieve for this project. 3D printed matter. To be able to take a set of information and translate it into an organised and yet not very clear set of visual interpretation shows a great imagination. Scrolls. Ancient civilization. But, why tobacco? Well, curiosity mainly. Information secondly. And as an ex-smoker, many questions about tobacco came to mind. But, I had chosen tobacco because I was in the painful process of quitting smoking during the research for this project and cigarettes was the only thing in my mind at that time. When someone is confronted with any question about tobacco, many protest and condemn its consumption, highlighting the health risks related to it. Undeniable agreed. But diversion of opinion emerge when other questions about tobacco was posed. For example: Where does tobacco come from? By any mean this question is put into context to challenge the scientific facts related to smoking, but to highlight a more geographically and directed question to the audience. Any other question about tobacco would make an interesting map and yet challenge my personal knowledge about the subject. For example:

What is tobacco? When mass tobacco consumption started? Why tobacco come here? How many types of tobacco exist? Who brought tobacco here?

Modern manufactured mix blended tobacco – or cigarettes, as it is widely known – in my view it is one of the worse drugs around because it is legal, harmful, cheap, found in any corner (shop) and highly addictive. Using facts and research as reference, I decided to make a series of twenty scrolls/maps with informational purpose inside a protective box in order to represent it all in a bigger scale (book size). Rolled information about tobacco into a cigarette box, may be considered as cliché, but this giant pack of

information could be down scaled making it possible to be distributed or sold by cigarette machines instead bookstores. Furthermore, it could be disseminated by any corner shop or tobacco seller in the U.K. Tobacco is a product that has innumerous lovers, haters and uninformed individuals around the globe. I want to structure this project with no intention to ask people to stop smoking, neither asking people to smoke more than usual. Instead it will be designed to give interesting visual information (with no chocking images) about the history, production, trades, and other curiosities about a product that have been around much longer than the alphabet itself. Tobacco is a very polemic product, which lost its original and pure properties long time before consumption, giving away to many man made chemicals. But the cigarette box is the most successful pack designed ever, so I will build one in bigger scale, perphaps more like a book with twenty individually, illustrative and informative loose pages confined into it. InfoArcadia (below) was an exhibition about data, information and the manner in which they are visualised. Information graphics, instruction manuals, information landscapes, data cluster are included, but so too are more personal ideas - like mapping one’s life by making events on food tin lids. The Dutch design company Lust was asked to make a piece to interpret the data Paul Slovic gathered through surveys on people’s perception of risk in 1988. Lust selected 81 of more than 40K answers. The commissioner wanted a visualisation of three results of the research - factors such as ‘controllable vs. uncontrollable’ and ‘known risk vs. unknown risk’; the desire of people for strict regulation of certain risks; and the importance of certain risks as signals to society. End result: carpet of 3 by 3 metres.

“The world is complex, dynamic, multidimensional; the paper is static and flat. How to represent the rich visual world of experience and measurement on mere flatland?” – Edward R. Tufte (1990), Envisioning Information. Perhaps, interaction was not highly relevant at the time he wrote it, but surely at the moment it plays a vital role in any product success. The challenge of visually representing any subject on paper has been around since paper itself, but fortunately, the principles of information design are universal, much like mathematics, and are not tied to unique features of a particular language or culture. As the interest about tobacco history and its effects on the human body took over this project initial research, which was meant to be a set of maximum twenty maps on how tobacco evolved during five hundred years of its trade to European society and the world. Even a title was already set, Tobacco: an encyclopedic atlas. But instead, in the attempt to escape the “flatland”, a book has been chosen as the final format for this particular project. Intentions within this project is to challenge book format, perhaps questioning books structure, navigation system and interactivity, producing something not very conventional.

Nevertheless, the most similar format taken into account is the Hebrew Sefer Torah scrolls. The greatest usage of scrolls today is in Jewish religious observance at least every week in each Bet Knesset (Synagogue) or Bet Midrash (house of learning).

In the BBC4 documentary Maps: Power, Plunder and Possession shown on 18th April 2010, a very long old map sparkled the idea of make a book consisted of several rolled wide maps started to flourish, leading me to consider how scrolls were used and made by ancient civilizations. For long time I was undecided between maps, books, 3D printed matter and scroll. So, I decided to mix it all and, roll 20 individual pages and put it all into a box.

Q. How many books (or atlas) have you see with individual pages of information rolled like a scroll and sealed in a box? A.

Zero, nil, none.

Sifrei Torah, Book(s) of Torah or Torah Scroll(s) are only opened during actual reading, and covered with bein gavras, the flat, embroidered cover placed over the Torah between Aliyot (those called to the seven Torah readings). There is a sense of fragility and preciousness about them, but they still are not sealed in a box.

Borders, political divisions of the modern world, nautical routes and older civilizations was my starting point to know more about tobacco trade.

Prototype 1 After read two books about tobacco history and many others about maps, cartography and drawing, I used a Brazilian cigarette box (Carlton) to simulate the overall feeling of what I was trying to achieve. At this stage the idea was vaguely to have a world map horizontally divided into three parts. Something like a puzzle and the viewer would be in charge to put the information together. The feedback had the following comments: Effective idea. Effective information. Think about material. Continue research and/or reference. Revealing is sexy. Where your data comes from. Think about scale. Be more playful. Think about content. Think how to roll it back.

In the attempt to use the dots only to create an alternative map, interviewees were asked to completed the 24hs Tobacco odour exposure tracker survey and graph. As a creator of this apparently complex graph, I had no trouble filling it up, the instructions are clear but the mixing feeling response forced me to put it aside and concentrate mainly on informational factors about tobacco. Fifty-two graphs were completed and the feedback for them were: I did not get it.

Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lung that primarily causes shortness of breath. In people with emphysema, the lung tissues necessary to support the physical shape and function of the lung are destroyed.

Bronchiectasis is associated with a wide range of disorders, but it usually results from necrotizing bacterial infections. (caused by the Staphylococcus or Klebsiella species or Bordetella pertussis.) Involved bronchi are dilated, inflamed, and easily collapsible, resulting in airflow obstruction and impaired clearance of secretions.

Tuberculosis or TB is a common and often deadly infectious disease caused by various strains of mycobacteria. It is spread through the air, when people who have the disease cough, sneeze, or spit.

In the respiratory system mucus aids in the protection of the lungs by trapping foreign particles that enter it, particularly through the nose, during normal breathing.

Communication is a medical phrase indicating that it is not connected to the standard bronchial airways and that it performs no function in respiration.

pulmonary Pulmonary hemorrhage is an hemorrhage acute bleeding from the lung. Coughing is of major importance, as it is the body’s main method to remove dust,mucus, saliva, and other debris from the lungs. Inability to cough can lead to infection.

Restrictive Conditions

An alveolus is an anatomical structure that has the form of a hollow cavity. Found in the lung, the pulmonary alveoli are spherical outcroppings of the respiratory sites of gas exchange with the blood.

Pleural effusion is excess fluid that accumulates in the pleural cavity, the fluid-filled space that surrounds the lungs. Excessive amounts of such fluid can impair breathing by limiting the expansion of the lungs during inhalation.

Pulmonary or bronchopulmonary sequestration is a medical condition where a piece of tissue that develops into lung tissue is not attached to the pulmonary blood supply and does not communicate with the other lung tissue.

Sarcoidosis is a systematic granulomatous inflammatory disease characterized by sarcoidosis non-caseating granulomas Fibrosis is the formation or development of excess fibrous connective tissue in an organ or tissue as a reparative or reactive process.

Pulmonary edema is fluid accumulation in the lungs. It leads to impaired gas exchange and may cause respiratory failure.

Pulmonary embolism is a blockage of the main artery of the lung or one of its branches by a substance that has travelled from elsewhere in the body through the bloodstream.

Pulmonary hypertension is an increase in blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, or pulmonary capillaries, together known as the lung vasculature, leading to shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, etc.

Prototype 2 After researching the human bronchial tree communication system, I adapt the data to a list of pulmonary diseases and its implications to the pulmonary system. I decided to scale the prototype up and print the information on one side of a 45g paper with dimensions of 210mm (h) x 420mm (w). I used colourful post-its as a ring holder simulating the cigarette bud. After observed peers and tutors struggling to roll the maps back into place (ring) from the first prototype, I glued a strip of colourful paper on one of the edges of the map in order to facilitate the roll back process. As bigger prototype box, I used a ordinary milk card box. The feedback was the following: What do you want to map? Uses of map. Material (cigarette, rizlas, cigar, tobacco etc.) More than just cigarette (history, how A becomes B) How mapping changes society Bible paper, parchment paper Question the content (what do you put on it?) What is a map How can you change people perception of smoking? Mayas was the first to cultivate the tobacco plant and this tempted me to place the 3 Americas (North, Central and South) at the middle of the world maps. Intriguing curiosity: Indigenous tribe all over the three Americas used to smoking tobacco. Mayan myth: â&#x20AC;&#x153;In ancient times, when the land was barren and the people were starving, the Great Spirit sent forth a woman to save humanity. As she travelled over the world everywhere her right hand touched the soil, there grew potatoes. And everywhere her left hand touched the soil, there grew corn. And in the place where she had sat, there grew tobacco.â&#x20AC;? In 1492 Christopher Columbus and his crew returned to Europe from the Americas with the first tobacco leaves and seeds ever seen on the continent. A crew member, Rodrigo de Jerez, was seen smoking and imprisoned by the Inquisition, which believed he was possessed by the devil.

After been literally trancing the whole world, country by country (above), the end result will be the basis for all geographical maps and background image for this project. It will be used colours to define the end result for each map. Including giant cigarette box cover. Lots of live paint will be used. Adobe Illustrator... I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what I would do without you!

Tobacco as medicine Tobacco consumption has raised among developing countries and on decline among developed nations recently. Tobacco industry is one of the major revenue (tax payer) income to many countries in the world. The plant had been smoked as part of ritual practices in North, Central and South America well before it began to be cultivated, during the period from 5000 to 3000 BCE. The Mayas, the Aztecs and the Caribs, and numerous other people in the Western Hemisphere, smoked one form of tobacco or another. The smoke also served as the food for the spirits that inhabited the shamans. The dried leaves were from the plant Nicotiana Tabacum, but the Spaniards misheard its indigenous name as tabaco, which was actually the tube or pipe in which the Indians smoked the plant. The plant was already

widely cultivated throughout the Americas in the form of Nicotiana rustica. In the life of the ancient – and to some degree also of the contemporary – human, religion, superstition and medicine cannot be completely dissociated. This principle certainly appears to be true with tobacco. When Spaniard arrived in Yucatán, they found a rich medical lore among the Mayas. The Mayas believed that supernatural forces set ailments as a punishments for their sins, and it was to the gods that they prayed for to cure. For the Mayas, religion and medicine, priest and physicians were inseparable. A considerable body of medical literature was written on Maya medicine. Unfortunately the earliest manuscripts date only from the eighteen century. Tobacco as a remedy for physical and mental ills in mentioned in the Princeton Codex, or, as it is better known, Ritual of the Bacabs. It contain a mixture of incantations and straightforward medical prescriptions. It recommends tobacco for toothaches, chills, lung, kidney and eye diseases, and so on.

For eruptions, fever and seizures, it is to be drunk with two peppers, a little honey and a little tobacco juice. Another famous Maya medical treatise is the Herbs and Magic Spells of Yucatán, where tobacco, specially its green leaves, is the ingredient in various concoctions for such maladies as lack of strength, pain in the heart, recurring chills, convulsion, loss of speech, sore eye, buboes, various kinds of pox, and retention of urine. Tobacco is also listed as a medicine to prevent miscarriage: it was mixed with lime and them smeared on the abdomen and massage into it. In the Maya community of Cham Kom, present-day use of tobacco is curing ceremonies has been reported. A widely practised ‘curing’ with tobacco can be seen by travellers in Petén. It is thought to be an excellent remedy for scorpion and tarantula bites. But unfortunately, this plant had fallen in the hands of greedy people, that wants to profit no matter the circumstances, transforming tobacco into something else. Now a day, commercial tobacco is mainly smoked and mixed with chemicals, inverting any medicinal properties.
