FR En 1966 à Nevers, l’église Sainte-Bernadette voit le jour, fruit de la collaboration de Claude Parent, architecte et de Paul Virilio, urbaniste et essayiste.Ils fondent le groupe Architecture Principe, développent de nouvelles relations aux territoires urbains, et rendent compte par là même d’un certain état du monde fracturé, violent, complexe. Vingt ans à peine nous séparent alors de la seconde guerre mondiale, le bunker figure le souvenir de ses atrocités. Nous sommes en pleine guerre froide, l’abri c’est surtout l’abri atomique dont certaines capitales entreprennent la construction pour sauver leurs populations. Référence au bunker comme l’abri protecteur, l’église Sainte-Bernadette est un édifice témoin d’un siècle qui a accumulé les drames, les guerres les plus tragiques de l’histoire. L’intérieur en opposition avec l’extérieur se veut un refuge, au même titre que la religion. Le lieu est doux, feutré, calme, sécurisant. Le bâtiment est la réponse de Parent et Virilio à la question de la fin dernière des hommes et peut-être du monde. Claude Parent dit : « Lorsque Paul Virilio et moi avons conçu l’église Sainte-Bernadette de Nevers, nous connaissions de façon inconsciente son caractère perturbateur mais nous étions loin d’imaginer la violence qu’engendrerait cet édifice ». Elle fût menacée pendant des années de destruction et après 35 ans de purgatoire, elle ne figure dans aucun livre sur l’architecture française. Le 25 mai 2000, l’église est inscrite au titre des monuments historiques, elle rejoint alors les neuf églises classées sur les quatre mille édifices du XXéme siècle.
ENG In 1966 in Nevers, the Church of St. Bernadette was born from the collaboration of Claude Parent, architect, and Paul Virilio, urbanist and essayist.Together they founded the group « Architecture Principe », developing new relationships between urban areas, and reflecting upon a certain state of the world, fractured, violent and complex. Just twenty years separated the building from World War II. The bunker represents the memory of past atrocities. The construction was during the time of the Cold War, and was a time that many capital cities were building atomic shelters. The threat of a nuclear war was looming. The cave is the second reference after the bunker. In opposition to the exterior, the interior of the church is like a refuge, as is religion. The place is comforting, peaceful and safe. The building is the response of Parent and Virilio to the question to the end of the humanity and of the world. Claude Parent says: « When Paul Virilio and I designed the Church of St. Bernadette in Nevers, we knew unconsciously its disruptive character, but we were far from imagining the violence that could be created the construction. The Church has been threatened for years of destruction and after 35 years of purgatory, it doesn’t appear in any book about french architecture. On the 25th of May, 2000, the church was listed as a historic monument and joins nine other churches listed out of the four thousand buildings of the twentieth century.

BIO FR Guillaume Chamahian est né en 1975. Il vit et travaille à Marseille. Il est père d’un garçon. Né dans la Cité Phocéenne, Guillaume Chamahian a grandit dans les quartiers nord de la ville. Du béton des H.L. M. au dépouillement de l’urbanisme qu’il subit, Guillaume va alors faire émerger une esthétique inconsciente, et pourtant, aujourd’hui encore, extrêmement ancrée dans son action artistique. Connaître ses origines ne signifie pas en avoir fini avec elles, et l’instabilité de son identité historique va également laisser sa part de stigmates. Il empoigne son premier appareil photographique – un cadeau – à l’âge de 18 ans. Durant les quinze années qui vont suivre, il va photographier. À l’envie. Apatride et autodidacte, Guillaume s’attache alors à une certaine approche du drame. L’humain, piégé entre ses envies de construction et ses poussées destructrices, va hanter son écriture photographique. Il sera donc question de génocide, de la mort de dieu comme du croyant, ou d’urbanisme – souvent déchu -, unique résidu du passage des hommes sur leurs terres. Misère, refuges, folies et disparitions des mondes seront prégnants dans son travail. Mais embrasser le chaos ne lui donne pas raison. Guillaume le sait, et malgré ses approches morbides – bien que désincarnées -, ses tragédies n’échappent pas à son jugement critique. Donner à voir victimes et responsables, questionner des résonances historiques, mettre en lumière les filiations constituent des trames, des grilles de lecture dont son action photographique ne saurait se passer. Bosnia, Chaos, Sombre mémoire ou Guerre Froide : toutes ses séries sont justiciables d’une prise de position. La sienne, et donc la votre. Il est également fondateur et le co-directeur artistique du festival annuel Les Nuits Photographiques. Théophile Pillault.

BIO EN Guillaume Chamahian is 37 years old. He lives and works in Marseille. He is the father of a boy. Born in the Phocean City of Marseille in 1975, Guillaume Chamahian grew up in the infamous northern suburbs of the city. From the concrete of the H.L.M. government housing projects to the destitution of urban development around him, Guillaume brings forward an unconscious aesthetic, and is still today extremely grounded in his artistic action. To know your origins does not mean that you are finished with them, and the instability of his historical identity has left its mark. He holds his first camera- a gift- at the age of 18. During the 15 years which follow, he photographs. Without stopping. A stateless and self-taught photographer, Guillaume embraces a certain approach to drama. The human, trapped between his desires for construction, and his destructive urges, will haunt his photographic exploration. In this way he goes on to question genocide, the death of God and the believer, urban developmentoften failed-, unique residue of man’s passage on earth. Misery, refuge, madness, and the disappearance of worlds are immersed in his work. But embracing chaos does not make it right. Guillaume knows this, and despite his morbid subject matter- although disembodied- these tragedies do not escape his critical eye. To victims and perpetrators to the forefront and question their historic echoes, to bring to light the influence of this history on the perspective that frames his photography. Bosnia. Chaos, Dark memory or Cold War: all of his series urge taking a position. His, and therefore yours as well. He is the founder and the artistic co-director of the annual festival Les Nuits Photographiques, an event that exhibits and supports cutting edge photography. ThÊophile Pillault.
