Honoring Loudoun County’s Rising Business and Community Leaders

Doctors. Lawyers. Teachers. Principals. A chef. A high-heeled marketing guru. A figure-skating coach. And a beauty queen. Yep, Loudoun County is diverse. And, as the sample above indicates, this year’s class of “40 Under 40” up-and-coming business and community leaders reflects that diversity. This marks the third year that Leesburg Today and Ashburn Today have recognized a group of 40 young professionals, and each year we are more and more impressed with not only the wide variety of vocations represented but also with the honorees’ dedication to their work, their families and their community.

The program actually traces its roots to 2009, when the newspaper began collaborating with the Young Professionals initiative of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce to honor the top “30 Under 30” in the county. The program was expanded to “40 Under 40” in 2013, so with this year’s class we have honored 120 young leaders. The year’s honorees were selected from more than 100 nominees, who had to be under age 40 (as of July 31) and live or work in Loudoun. Nominees were asked to submit additional details about their professional accomplishments and community involvement. Based on that information, a committee consisting of representatives of the newspaper, the Young Professionals group of the chamber and past honorees selected the 40 leaders profiled in this section (in alphabetical order). Special thanks to Alimond Photography and one of our 2014 honorees, Aliyah Dastour, for the beautiful photographs. Our 40 honorees represent a wide spectrum of the Loudoun community – from “mom-andpop” businesses to large employers and from non-profit organizations to the public school system. Several are first-generation Americans, and others have lived in Loudoun their entire lives. Many stay busy not only with work and community activities but also as mothers and fathers of young children. And one is running for office this fall. This remarkable group of individuals is committed to making our community a better place in which to live and work – and we are better because of their contributions. The 40 honorees and their guests were recognized at a special dinner Sept. 24 at Stone Tower Winery in Leesburg. A few photos from that dinner appear on Page 15. Please join us in congratulating all of our honorees! Bruce Potter Chief Operating Officer Northern Virginia Media Services

Katie Barchas Wilson

Age: 32 Executive Director, Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter (LAWS)

Age: 35 | Director of Business Development, Mesh Omnimedia and founder, High-Heeled Happy Hour “Elevator speech” about you and your company/organization: Mesh Omnimedia is Loudoun’s premier creative agency that specializes in web, video, event and design services.

“Elevator speech” about you and your company/organization: As executive director of LAWS, I’m privileged to serve the Loudoun community every day. LAWS assists victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: I’m proud of many accomplishments—successfully running a nonprofit while raising a family, and LAWS being selected as Nonprofit of the Year by the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce in 2013. But my proudest accomplishments are when someone we helped tells us they are safe and empowered after receiving our services. Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: I participate in many initiatives aimed at making Loudoun a safer and better place—the Loudoun Domestic Violence Steering Committee, the Loudoun Child Advocacy Center Advisory Board, and the Loudoun Human Services Network, just to name a few. I love working with so many people who support our mission. Personal background and family information: My husband, Derek, is my best friend and life adventure partner. We have a sweet

and hilarious 6-year-old son and two dogs. Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you? Sue Curtis was the LAWS executive director for over 20 years—working for her I learned so much about working with survivors, how to create a supportive, fulfilling workplace, and making community-wide change. Working with Sandy Scafidi, our founder, also taught me many lessons about staying true to our mission. Favorite hobby or activity: I love to cook—it’s my stress relief. No baking, though - too many rules to follow. I like to make it up as I go! Favorite smartphone app: Amazon shopping app—I don’t really enjoy shopping and don’t have a lot of time to do it. It’s a great timesaver. Plus with AmazonSmile, a percentage goes back to LAWS.

Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: My proudest professional accomplishment was leaving a decade-long career in financial services to focus on my family and on my passions: marketing, events and charity. The relationships I have built, the businesses I’ve helped grow and succeed, and the charities I’ve supported have made it all worthwhile. Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: Katie is the founder of the High-Heeled Happy Hour, a shoe-themed monthly women’s networking event series. Presented by Northern Virginia Media Services, High-Heeled Happy Hours provide area women the opportunity to engage with each other in a fun, relaxed environment. Each High-Heeled Happy Hour is hosted by a female business professional/community leader who selects a charity beneficiary for the event. Personal background and family information: Katie is a Northern Virginia native and lives in Purcellville with her husband, Chris; three children, Dominic, Natalie and Clarke; a

dog, Jules; and cats, Tom and Cutie. Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you? My dear friend Lisa Vella of Baileywyck Shoppes and Golden Dreams Therapeutic Riding Center has made a significant impact on both my personal and professional life. She’s a savvy business owner, a spectacular hostess and a special soul who has literally opened her home to others in need. Favorite hobby or activity: Writing. Although work and family have afforded me little spare time, I enjoy blogging and freelancing when I have the opportunity. Favorite smartphone app: My Calendar. With so many different people, projects and pets to juggle, I rely heavily on my phone calendar (and its alarm feature!!!) to remind me of appointments, calls and events.

Thank you for honoring Blake Fellows as one of Loudoun County’s top “40 under 40” Professionals.

My mother, while raising a family of four boys, ensured our well-rounded education as well as a focus on the community, especially with church and Scouting. In addition, she is a special education teacher who ensures her students and their families have the resources to meet their educational and emotional needs. Favorite hobby or activity: I love traveling with family and friends. My experiences so far include 12 countries and more than half of our great nation’s states. Can’t wait for more! Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: Most profoundly significant was the Peace Corps in West Africa. I experienced things previously unimaginable and gained deep perspective. Specifically, more important than material gains are the things that actually improve our standard of living: the empowerment gained by knowledge and learning, faith, and the invaluable importance of human connections.

Eric E. Zwiksky

Age: 27 Wellness Manager, Nova Medical & Urgent Care Center

Age: 28 Vice President, Potomac Metals Inc.

“Elevator speech” about you and your company/organization: Simply put, I help others be healthy. Nova Medical’s mission is optimal health, and my role is to empower employees to achieve this. Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: I simultaneously worked full time and was a full-time student working on a master’s degree in public health and a minor in health communication. Looking back now, I don’t know how I had the time and energy to do it all at the same time! Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: Being involved in the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce has opened so many doors for me, both personally and professionally. I currently am engaged in the Healthy Business Initiative and the Young Professionals group. It is so refreshing to see so many enthusiastic and eclectic businesses come together to better the community. Personal background and family information: I grew up in Annapolis, Md., and lived in South Carolina for eight years for college and graduate school (go Gamecocks!). I have a very large family spread throughout Mary-

land, the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia and two furry family members – Stew the bulldog and Sebastian the black lab. Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you? I would have to give credit to my current boss and friend, Melanie Schmidt. Being new to the area, she went above and beyond to acquaint me to Loudoun County and get me involved in the business community and social scene. Favorite hobby or activity: I love being active outdoors! Outside of work you can find me running, biking, hiking or paddle-boarding. Anything involving a boat or beach also ranks high on my list. Favorite smartphone app: I’m obsessed with my Fitbit app – it brings out the competitive side in me.

“Elevator speech” about you and your company/organization: We buy ferrous and nonferrous metals either at one of our sites or we send out mobile trucks with scales to weigh and pay at your location. We also have a roll-off container service available for larger amounts of materials you may need picked up and/or construction and debris. Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: Joining my father after graduation from McDaniel College in his metal recycling company has been most gratifying. Being able to make good use of the Bachelor of Arts in Business and Economics degree for which he so graciously backed me financially - and now, as vice president of the company simply having my father’s respect for my business decisions, more than fills me with pride! Most significant non-profit work/community involvement: As we moved from Maryland to Leesburg fairly recently, we have just started rearing up in our community involvement. I have been coaching flag football through I9 Sports. Personal background and family information: I grew up in Knoxville, Md., attending Brunswick High School, where I excelled in academics, football and basketball. At McDaniel College, I started as running back

on the football team and was team captain for two years. I have been blessed with not only an amazing gorgeous wife, but I am also the father of three beautiful children: two sons and a daughter, who all love our dog, Flash. Who do you consider a personal or professional mentor and how did that person help you? Undoubtedly, I would have to say my Dad has been my “guru” in both my personal and professional endeavors. He has shown me that through hard work and determination you can accomplish just about anything - both in my home life and at the office. Favorite hobby or activity: My wife and I both enjoy running in marathons for charities. I like an occasional hunting and/or fishing trip with the guys. Also, I am the captain of the Avengers flag football team at Morven Park. Favorite smartphone app: I particularly like the Facebook app.
