Cranes, Delimbers and Chippers: Tools of the trade for Krawiec Tree Service by Kristen M. Castrataro In this economy, successfully running a small business is quite an accomplishment. Mark Krawiec has done that and more. Mark owns and operates Krawiec Tree Service in Harmony, RI, which does everything from land clearing to urban tree removal. In addition, he has five land management corporations, most of which involve creating and renting business space. None of

these successes would be possible however, if it were not for his assortment of tree removal equipment. He says that having the right equipment has enabled him to take on almost any job and handle it efficiently and professionally. It also allows him to profit off each aspect of each job he undertakes. Cranes from 3 colored and are sold at Eastern Connecticut Recycling (ECR). Even the 80-foot oak trees that came down in his own yard proved beneficial. He cut and split every foot for firewood. Over the years, Krawiec has worked on a wide variety of projects, and he has acquired specialized equipment to facilitate each one. His favorite piece of equipment is his two year old Altec crane a unit with a 137-foot boom that can pick up a load weighing 40 tons and lift it over obstacles

that might hinder other models. His crew appreciates having it because it is fast, efficient and makes their work easier. Krawiec likes it because it allows him to take urban and suburban jobs where there is limited or no access to the actual work site. For example, he has removed trees from back yards without ever moving the crane from the front yard. Another instance where having the right equipment for the job paid off in 2009. Krawiec was contracted to create a

dence Water. Using the company’s TimberJack 530 Delimber, Krawiec’s crew

cleared seventy acres of mature forest making the way for native grassland and early successional species to thrive. At the time of this project, diesel fuel had jumped to around $5 a gallon. As a way to help absorb some of that overhead expense, Krawiec was able to sell every bit of wood they

harvested as cord wood. The wood chips were turned into mulch, which also provided them with additional revenue. In addition to direct contracts with private landowners and municipalities, Krawiec subcontracts out to larger projects as well. He has worked on bridge and highway projects, state contracts and FEMA jobs. During Superstorm Sandy this year, he had crews clearing downed trees in southern Rhode Island. Within hours, they were able to remove storm damaged trees, cutting and chipping the downed trees, some of them 80foot spruces, using their Bandit 200 chipper. Krawiec said that finding the right equipment can be a time consuming process. There is a dearth of large equipment dealers in southern New England, so he usually begins his search on the internet. He said that he finds that with some of the “local” dealers being located up to 200 miles away, it is often cheaper to ship a piece from across the country than it is to pick up a “local” piece. When he finds a piece he likes, he does what it takes to acquire it. For example, before purchasing his Bandit 1850 Track Chipper, he flew out to Michigan. There, he toured both the Bandit and Morbark facilities. When he found the unit at the price that he liked, he bought it.

Cranes from 5 uses every day. It was then that he started his own business. Eight years ago Krawiec began the first of his five land management corporations. With the return on most investments in this economy at a low level, Krawiec saw land management as an opportunity with a potentially high return. Krawiec handles all aspects of his land management corporations from clearing and building many of the plazas to selecting renters and negotiating leases. The suc-

cess of this segment of his operation has come at a good time because the slow economy has begun affecting Krawiec’s Tree Service. This year, 2012, is the first year Krawiec can remember not working straight up until Christmas. Despite these challenges, Krawiec is confident in his business plan. He credits his diversification with keeping him solvent in this economic climate and looks forward to better times. It is easy to share his optimism.

There are times, however, when his equipment purchases are nothing short of serendipitous. One day he was at ECR and ran into a colleague who was retiring and looking to unload a Morbark chipper with hydraulic winch. The chipper’s 24x30-inch opening allows it take entire tree tops. Since the seller was an over the road trucker, it took Krawiec three months to finalize the deal. Just the same, he thinks it was worth the wait. As important as the right equipment is, it is not the sole secret to Krawiec’s success. He is a firm believer in customer service. “We want to leave them happy,” he says. “The first step in accomplishing that goal is hiring the right people.” When it comes to bidding a job, Krawiec likes to use good judgement. If he’s going to lose money on a job, he refuses it, whether that means turning down a private landowner, a commercial renter, or a state job. Many businesses go under despite the fact that they are always “busy;” Krawiec doesn’t want to be one of them. Once he does take a job, he takes customer service very seriously. He personally shows up at every job, managing the communication between the customer and his crew. Krawiec believes that his clients choose Krawiec Tree Service because they know they will get the “job done right.” Doing the job right includes respecting the property. Krawiec’s crews use mats and plywood on lawns to prevent damage from the equipment. As one employee says, “When we pull out, you don’t even know we were there.” That fastidiousness pays off. Clients regularly invite the crews in for coffee, donuts and an old fashioned visit. And his customers pay the greatest compliment: they call him back for repeat work. The majority of Krawiec’s jobs are either previous customers with more jobs or new customers referred by previous customers. A “new venture” Krawiec’s original passion for tree work started in high school, and it hit its full stride in the 70s when he started clearing land to build his first home. In 1992, he bought his first log truck, which he still

ACKSONVILLE, NC — At first glance, this logging road in rural Southeast North Carolina seems like any other. But a closer look reveals a sign informing people that a work zone is ahead where safety gear is required, and visitors are not allowed. That is unusual because normal logging operations aren’t typically sought after destinations for travelers, but Goodson’s All Terrain Logging crew from Jacksonville, North Carolina isn’t exactly normal. Aside from wielding the special equipment needed to traverse and successfully harvest timber in swampy terrain, the entire operation was the focus of the popular reality TV show Swamp Loggers. The show first aired in 2009. It was cancelled in early 2012 after 36 episodes. The fame it brought to Bobby Goodson and his crew however, continues. During the time the show was regularly broadcast,

Goodson's eastern North Carolina business is nationally famous.

Logging in a swampy environment calls for specialized equipment. Bobby showed the world that nice guys don’t always finish last. As a result, Bobby, his son Justin, Dave, Bo, Joy, Simitrio and the rest of Goodson’s All Terrain Logging business, have a very loyal fan following. In addition, with reruns still in occasional rotation on television, new fans continue to find the show. Despite the no visitors allowed sign at the beginning of their logging road, Bobby Goodson personifies the term southern hospitality. While visits aren’t encouraged, friends and fans that do happen to catch the swamp loggers in action, are greeted pretty much the same way Bobby greeted people on the show — with a smile and a handshake. Clearing a site of its timber is a more efficient job now that the Bandit tree chipper is a regular tool for the crew.

The cameras might be gone, but Bobby Goodson and the Swamp Loggers crew are still famous, still extreme, and with the help of a Bandit Model 2590, busier than ever.

He speaks with the sincere modesty of someone unexpectedly elevated to the spotlight, but grateful for the unique opportunity to meet and help others. For many professional loggers he has become their unofficial spokesman, putting an honest face to a tough industry where multi-generational family operations like his are as common as cornbread and sweet tea in the south. It’s not a role he sought, but as a devoted Christian and family man, it’s a responsibility he aspires to live up to. “I’ve met so many good people doing this show, and there’s a lot of good I can do,” he said. “For a 44 minute show it takes 200 hours of filming, so there were a lot of things that didn’t make it in, but there were many good things that did. A lot of reality shows are like train wrecks, with everybody arguing or fighting. We are just a group of people

trying to get along and do a job, just trying to make a living.” That’s why visiting Goodson’s All Terrain Logging at the worksite is just like the television show. The focus of the program was the work being done, not conflict. With the exception of a new Bandit chipper in the fleet, the work hasn’t changed. The terrain is still tricky, the equipment can still be finicky and their goal is still to hit 100 loads a week. The new machine is a 22-inch capacity Bandit Model 2590 whole tree chipper, outfitted with a 540 hp CAT C15. He picked it up in August 2011, not long after filming stopped. It never made it into the show, but he’s already racked up plenty of hours chipping the slash he used to leave behind. “We have so much waste and slash on our job, and there’s a market coming on now for biofuel so I knew we’d have to go in that direction,” he explained. “I knew Bandit had the best machine out there; I’ve seen guys around me running other machines, and then they’d switch to Bandit so you figure it’s got to

be a good product. The 2590 has done a really good job for us, saved us a lot of money.” Bobby’s first encounter with Bandit was actually chronicled during the second season of Swamp Loggers. The episode titled “Growing Pains” featured a Model 4680 Beast horizontal grinder brought in to wipe out some large piles of chunk wood. He ultimately decided a whole tree chipper would be a better fit for his operation given the local market. He looked to Bandit for a solution. “The 2590 has really filled a niche for us, with all the limbs and tops and debris it can process,” said Goodson. “We’ve picked our production up about five or six loads a day, and that’s just extra loads we’re getting without having to pull more wood. With the C15, it’ll throw a load in about 20 minutes so we’re not burning much fuel. The only real holdup we have right now is that the mill we’re hauling to only has one dump, so it can be tough to get unloaded in a timely manner.” Watching the team in action, it soon becomes clear just how good they are at what they do. The 2590 takes material as quick as their Tiger Cat 240 can deliver it. It fills the chip trailer in about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, Bobby moves to another Tiger Cat to load one of the log trucks. Both trucks leave at approximately the same time, just as another empty log truck rolls in. Further out in the swamp another crew is hard at it working with feller bunchers and another loader. “One of the hardest things I’ve done in 26 years of logging is to find a good group of people that work well together for a common goal,” said Goodson. “Everybody is out here to get as many loads as we can. The more loads we get, the more money everybody makes.” Bobby said that the cancellation of the show is something of a double edged sword. He misses the TV people and the opportunity to share his ideals and experiences with a large audience, but filming the show was actually very stressful, and not just from a safety standpoint. Having people on the ground with cameras and microphones certainly added a new aspect to keeping everyone out of harm’s way, but the diligence of everyone involved prevented major injuries during the three years of filming. Bobby found that in addition to running the company and guiding his crew, the production team was always turning to him for direction. “I had 12 people looking at me every morning, wanting to know what we were going to be doing,” said Goodson. “With logging you always have a plan when you leave the house in the morning, but you end up reacting to the situations as they happen throughout the day. The first thing the film crew

When them I didn’t know, we’d just have to see what asked if being a television star and role model changed Bobby and Goodson’s All-Terrain Logging, happens.” “They wanted me onsite every minute,” he added, Bobby replies, “Not really.” As a fourth generation logger, Bobby still gets to the “which was tough because I had other things to do. This trailer is nearly full and ready to head to its destination.

WINN, MI — Amidst much excitement and fanfare, the first Boxer compact utility loader rolled off the Morbark®, Inc., production line. Morbark, a leading manufacturer of tree care, sawmill, recycling, forestry and biomass chipping and grinding equipment, had acquired Boxer® Equipment, a product line of Mertz Manufacturing, LLC at the end of 2012. Morbark’s staff gathered to watch as the first Boxer unit completed at the Morbark factory in Winn, Mich., a model 320 compact loader, was unveiled with a boxing themed introduction. “It’s been an amazing journey and a real testament to the teamwork and dedication of our staff,” Jim Shoemaker, Jr., president, Morbark, Inc., said. “In the 84 days since we received the intellectual property, we have moved inventory from Oklahoma to Michigan, invested in additional long lead inventory, set up aftermarket parts and service support for existing Boxer customers, created a production line including weld and assembly fixtures created marketing material, completed our first dealer

training sessions and today, completed the production of our first unit. A lot of people played a role in making this a reality. In fact, I sat down and started listing the Morbark employees who have played a role in helping with the Boxer acquisition and production line, and I stopped counting at 50. It was truly amazing how many of the team came together to pull this off.” Currently Morbark is working to fill Boxer back orders, as well as working with their authorized dealer network and previous Boxer dealers to ensure that customers receive unmatched service, after sales support and fast, efficient parts fulfillment. In June, Morbark is scheduled to reach its full production capacity. “This product line will fit like a glove with the rest of the tree care products that we make,” continued Shoemaker, “as well as allow Morbark, our dealers and our customers to penetrate new markets and create new opportunities for their businesses.” Morbark, Inc., based in Winn, MI, builds equipment that creates opportunities for customers serving the forestry, recy-

Komptech expands manufacturing capacity to meet demand Denver CO— Komptech has been growing for the past several years and to meet the increasing demand, in 2012 the company expanded its manufacturing capacity which included a new plant in Germany and a major expansion of its plant in Ljutomer near the company’s Austrian headquarters. With the addition of this new plant addition, Komptech is able to build six large compost turners, shredders or other machines at the same time. This doubles the plant’s previous capacity. Since completion of the expansion project in March 2012, the Ljutomer plant has been turning out machines like the Topturn compost turner for markets around the world, with most of the new units headed for the North American market. This is Komptech’s largest single market, and the company is devoting considerable resources to the North American market, in the way of product design, production capacity and parts and service for their customers. Additionally, the new production capabilities means not only more equipment being manufactured every year, but it also improves Komptech’s economies of scale. This helps

New TS-516 high capacity Scalper from IROCK Crushers boosts productivity across applications VALLEY VIEW, OHIO — IROCK Crushers, a leader in global sales of mobile screening and crushing equipment, has introduced the new TS-516 High Capacity Scalper. The highly durable scalper, one of five tracked screener units in IROCK’s lineup, improves productivity in a range of applications with greater hopper capacity, larger screens and a wider, oversize conveyor. IROCK designed the TS-516 so it can be used in a primary crusher circuit for materials such as construction and demolition waste, iron ore, aggregates, coal, recycling and heavy rock. At the same time, the machine is versatile enough to handle sticky clay and topsoil. It is powered by a 129 hp Caterpillar C4.4 engine and is capable of processing materials at a rate of up to 570 tons per hour. In terms of transportation, the equipment can be folded and loaded onto a truck or trailer, so it’s easy to move from site to site. As the largest tracked screener in its size class, the TS-516 also has the greatest hopper capacity. With an 11.7-cubic-yard hopper, it delivers more capacity than any other scalper in its class.

The equipment also increases production capacity with a total of 157square-feet of screening area having a 16-foot x 5foot top deck and a 15foot 4-inch x 5-foot bottom deck. This design allows users to produce and sort products in up to three different sizes, and the decks can be interchanged so customers have more control over end product size. In addition, to accommodate the high productivity of the rest of the machine, the TS-516 also features a 63-inch oversize conveyor. With a width that improves on the nearest competitor’s scalper by 15-inches, the conveyor accommodates higher tonnages and alleviates much of the potential for congestion. Design features and component options further enhance the machine’s durability and flexibility and provide end users more customization control. A rubber belt feeder is standard on the unit, but customers can substitute a Hardox apron feeder. Since Hardox feeders are designed to increase longevity in the most rugged environments and are ideal for applications requiring maximum durability. While the TS-516 comes standard with an at-

S .B. Cox demos Galliard Auditorium in Charleston project by Peter Hildebrandt

T

he Gaillard Municipal Auditorium opened in Charleston, SC in the late 1960s. Over the years, it served as a multi-purpose facility for events of all kinds hosting everything from Broadway productions and concerts to opera and ballet. The original Gaillard Auditorium, a boxy and rather bland facility by today’s standards was once considered futuristic. However, over that time the facility had become dated. At the time it was built, it was probably larger than it needed to be since it seated 2600. It included an exhibit hall as well. With the evolution of the exhibit industry in mind, Charleston planners sought change. Thus, work started recently on “The Gaillard Center,” a more functional and attractive facility. Charleston’s mayor, the City Council and the Gaillard Center Foundation, came together to oversee a complete renovation. Funding for the project is essentially 50/50, with private funding coming from donors and public funding supplied by the city of Charleston. The project consists of two phases. First is the selective demolition of portions of the original Gaillard Auditorium. Then comes the construction of new additions to the facility. Those include a performance hall, an exhibit hall and a new office space area of approximately 80,000-square-feet. When completed, this $71 million project is expected to open in late 2014. The primary contractors on this job are Skanska USA and Trident Construction. The Gaillard demolition S.B. Cox Demolition, Inc., headquartered in Richmond, VA, was responsible for the demolition work. Early in the demolition phase of the project, owner Barbee Cox discovered that the job was going to be more challenging than originally planned because the complex consisted of the auditorium, a walled area, a commons area and an exhibition hall. The auditorium was a concrete frame building with concrete columns. It also contained concrete beams and concrete floor slabs with infill between the columns on the exterior walls of concrete block and a

Cox's hi-reach CAT excavator works carefully to demo the auditorium's balcony. brick veneer over that. “We planned to go in there, remove the little commons area and the auditorium but leave the extra spare walls,” explains Cox. “But it became cost prohibitive trying to save those extra walls. This became a total demolition job of the auditorium.” “We separated that from the demolition of the exhibit hall,” he said. “It was a complicated job to start with and after we started it and made the decision to keep things separate it became a little easier — and we weren’t leaving those extra walls standing.” Cox’s work started August 20, 2012 and lasted five months. One of the biggest challenges of the project was removing the roof trusses on the building, according

The agility of a JLG manlift gives S.B. Cox workers the ability to get into tight spaces with safety and ease.

to Dewayne Edwards, SB Cox Demolition general superintendent. Before they could remove the trusses, the roofing material all was removed by hand. The top of the exhibit hall contained 120-foot, 20 ton steel trusses, four of which were dismantled using a 150 ton crane. With some of the trusses weighing up to 17,000 pounds, they found it helpful to have a 240 ton crane onsite to help lift those off and lower them to the ground. Cox crews used a Caterpillar 345 excavator with an ultra high long reach attachment for much of the demolition work. “We chewed most of the building down with our CAT long reach and a Caterpillar 330 outfitted with a universal processor on it. This ground up all the concrete from the building as well as removed all the rebar inside the concrete,” said Edwards. Built to keep from sagging, the auditorium balcony was constructed from post-tension cables and concrete. These were located in an eight by ten by 120-foot long section of the structure. “Most buildings typically have concrete and rebar to deal with; on occasion you will have ones containing post tension cables (like this) to deal with,” said Edwards. “Most of the post tension cable always has a load on it with tension contained in the cable. If you accidentally were to break one it could potentially go shooting out causing injury or death.” “The way we handled this demolition was to chew all of the balcony concrete off, leaving the two beams, starting in the middle of the beam and gradually relieving all the tension from off this feature of the building. All the rebar, the structural steel and all the concrete was hauled to approved sites. The concrete was taken to a crusher to be ground up and recycled.” Edwards said that when it was time for the trusses to come out, workers used man lifts to lift the cables and do the cutting. Everything was pretty much standard procedure for this type of project. He noted that everyone working on the roof was always tied off as a safety precaution.

It was mid-summer when the interior ceiling work began. Nevertheless, the ceiling had to be removed first. “It was quite warm in there in August,” explains Edwards. “We were actually working with a plaster ceiling. Typically, there were 25 to 26 workers onsite. Meanwhile, excavators outfitted with universal processors, were running constantly.” An interesting discovery “I’ve been building buildings for 40 years and this is the first time this has ever happened,” explains Skanska-Trident project manager, Bob Ferguson, as he tells of an interesting discovery made while the work was progressing. In mid-February, some six or more graves were discovered under a parking lot. “As we dug we started to uncover them. We had to call in the proper authorities and work stopped,” said Ferguson. “I think these graves were from the 1700s. If we find something like that we have to stop and the City of Charleston takes over; we didn’t resume until they told us to resume work.” LEED certified Ferguson said that an important aspect of this job was that Skanska was trying to recycle as much of the material as they could as part of LEED certification requirements. To be a one LEED point project there must be 50 percent diversion of material, for two points, there must be 75 percent diversion. On this job however, the amount diverted to recycling was 95 percent. Brick and concrete was crushed for aggregate. Steel went to salvage. Other recyclables included the concrete block, asphalt from the parking lot and everything else that could be redirected away from a landfill. “We had five different dumpsters onsite,” recalled Ferguson. “Wood went into one, paper into another one, concrete another, steel in another, so that they can all be taken to their respective places to be recycled. From that standpoint, the demolition was very interesting. When the work was completed, the record showed that we diverted 95 percent of the material. That is a tremendous amount,” he said. For more information on S.B. Cox Demolition Contractors, contact them at 804-222-3500 or via email at sales@sbcoxdemolition.com.

Several manlifts were used on this project. Here equipment is shown parked for the weekend.

Constantino Lannes, president of SENNEBOGEN LLC, says the new grapples simplify purchasing of SENNEBOGEN scrap handling equipment. “Operators can now deal with a trusted standard of reliability and support for the complete productivity solution.” The models with optional rotators provide high lift and torque capacity. Furthermore, the rotators are designed to accept high radial loads and axial loads, ideal for the pushing and pulling stresses in recycling applications. Each model operates within a wide pressure range to a maximum of 5500 psi, to cover the widest possible range of equipment oper-

ating pressures. Protective features such as steel hose guards and cylinder guards enhance reliability by minimizing potential damage to critical components from impacts or debris. Direct hose routings further reduce the grapple’s exposure to damage. All wear surfaces of the tines are 33 percent more wear resistant than T1 steel and tips are fabricated using a material providing 44 percent better abrasion resistance than typical AR-500 steel. The times are specifically designed to shed material cleanly and prevent material accumulation. SENNEBOGEN grapples are available exclusively through authorized SENNEBOGEN distributors throughout United States, Canada and South and Central America. SENNEBOGEN has been a leading name in the global material handling industry for over 60 years. Based in Stanley, NC, within the greater Charlotte region, SENNEBOGEN LLC offers a complete range of purpose

built machines to suit virtually any material handling application. Established in America in the year 2000, SENNEBOGEN LLC has quickly become a leading provider of specialized equipment solutions for recycling and scrap metal yards, barge and port operations, log handling, transfer stations and waste facilities from coast to coast. A growing network of distributors supports SENNEBOGEN LLC sales and service across the Americas, ensuring the highest standard of professional machine support and parts availability. Miller introduces the next generation SuitCase X-TREME 12VS wire feeder for heavy duty MIG and Flux cored field welding applications New features include improved wire feed speed control and an improved wire delivery system for feeding accuracy and consistency APPLETON, WI — Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has introduced the new SuitCase X-TREME 12VS voltage sensing wire feeder, a feeder designed specifically for welding in heavy duty field applications such as construc-

tion, structural steel erection, heavy equipment repair and mobile fabrication. The new SuitCase XTREME 12VS features a new drive motor assembly, motor control and integrated tachometer that provides electronic wire feed speed control and accuracy that rivals the performance of bench top style feeders found in shop environments. A new wire delivery system

also eases wire loading and provides minimal resistance in feeding, helping to further ensure consistent performance in MIG and Flux cored welding applications. Comparable wire feeders tend to fluctuate in performance throughout the day: As ambient temperatures change, and as the feeder gets hotter or colder, wire feed speed can vary from its original

setting. These changes in speed can lead to significant changes in deposition rates when welding, especially with large diameter cored wires. The new drive motor assembly and integrated tachometer in the SuitCase X-TREME 12VS ensures the accuracy of the wire feed speed throughout the day so that the feeder performs to exact parameters, whether

The new SuitCase X-TREME 12VS’ new features include improved wire feed speed control and an improved wire delivery system for feeding accuracy and consistency. made the SuitCase line of wire feeders the standard for outdoor/portable MIG and Flux cored welding applications, including SunVision™ digital meters that display voltage and wire feed speed and can be seen even in bright sunlight; an extremely portable and reliable polypropylene case with built-in slide rails and the ability to open the door to change wire in the vertical position; and potted and trayed main printed circuit boards to ensure reliability even in harsh outdoor environments. The new SuitCase X-TREME 12VS is compatible with CC or CV DC power sources or engine driven welder/generators. For more information visit MillerWelds.com. Miller Electric Mfg. Co., headquartered in Appleton, WI, is a leading worldwide manufacturer of Miller brand arc welding products and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Illinois Tool Works Inc. (NYSE: ITW). welding with small diameter solid wire (.023 -nch) or large diameter cored wires (5/64-inch). The new wire delivery system makes it easier to load the 12-inch wire spools and reduces drag on the wire by eliminating the inlet guide and allowing the wire to roll over the large radius of the drive rolls. It also features a new visual scale on the wire pressure knob that eliminates guesswork and allows welders to specifically dial in tension to settings they know provide the best performance for the size and type of wire they are working with. Additional new features include the redesigned placement of the shielding gas inlet (for MIG and dual shielded Flux cored welding applications) to better protect the fitting from damage, and a new wire speed dual schedule feature that reduces wire feed speed to 87.5 percent of standard speed for applications such as pipe welding that may require the welder to adjust wire feed speed for changing joint geometries or positions without having to stop and change settings. This feature requires a dual schedule gun or switch (sold separately). This new product retains features that have
