CHESAPEAKE, VA — Sandvik Construction has selected Volvo Penta power generation engines for its new electric powered track mounted tertiary crushers. The new UH450E tertiary crusher was developed by Sandvik in response to market demand and special requests from customers for an electric powered system. The new generation UH450E is powered by a Volvo Penta TAD1651GE power gener-

ation engine installed in a soundproof container. The electric power system greatly improves the energy efficiency of the unit. Low fuel consumption, uptime and the good reputation of Volvo Penta engines were Sandvik’s main reasons for selecting a Volvo Penta engine for the new UH450E crusher. Volvo Penta’s TAD1651GE engine offers 505 kVA, prime power, and 556 kVA, standby power, at 1,500 rpm. The

engine provides low maintenance and fuel consumption costs for the end users. The engine meets Stage IIIA/Tier 3 emission legislation which provides an environmentally conscious choice. This project is the latest step in the long term relationship between Volvo Penta and Sandvik Mining and Construction AB. The two companies signed a cooperation agreement with the goal to enhance the long-term

competitiveness of Sandvik’s products. Sandvik is a global industrial group with advanced products and world leading positions in selected areas — tools for metal cutting, equipment and tools for the mining and construction industries, stainless materials, special alloys, metallic and ceramic resistance materials as well as process systems. In 2012 the Group had about 49,000 employees and

representation in 130 countries, with annual sales of more than 98,000 MSEK. Sandvik Construction is a business area within the Sandvik Group providing solutions for virtually any construction industry application encompassing such diverse businesses as surface and underground rock quarrying, tunnelling, ex-

cavation, demolition, road building, recycling and civil engineering. The range of products includes rock tools, drilling rigs, breakers, bulk materials handling and crushing and screening machinery. In 2012 sales amounted to more than 9,700 MSEK, with approximately 3,300 employees (pro forma rounded numbers).

Hey GrinderGuy: Should I be using liquid colorant or dry powder colorant? I had a call last month from a Colored Mulch Manufacturer whom had been using liquid colorant for several years, but saw a competitor just start using dry powder. This competitor was hanging a supersack of dry powder from an excavator bucket and sprinkling the powder over a pile of wood then grinding it all in a tub grinder with a fire hose of water spraying into the tub while they were grinding. Not knowing much about the dry powder, he wanted to make sure he wasn’t missing a new improvement in the industry, so he asked me for my opinion. What is dry powder colorant and liquid colorant? The powder colorants, called pigments, are essentially the raw color materials used to create a liquid. The powder pigment is what gives the liquid its color. These days, anyone with a Trommel Screen and Saran™ Wrap can color mulch. Dry colorant is not a new development. I remember using dry powder back in the mid 90’s. While I did not use this method of application, it did work but the advancement of the liquid lines quickly made the dry application obsolete. My opinion, and it’s just my opinion, was: • While the powder is cheaper, this type of application does not allow for an accurate and consistent measurement of colorant application. So how do you know how much color you are applying and how much the mulch is costing? • I would be concerned about color runoff since there are no other chemicals to adhere the colorant to the wood. Also, I would be concerned about the powder that was not broken down in the grinding process and could potentially runoff. • The liquid color uses a much finer powder thus covering the wood much better with less actual color and lasts much longer do to the additional chemicals added to adhere the color to the wood • I have seen operations mixing industrial ash with mulch to turn it black, and not use any colorant at all With that being said, many operations use this sprinkle and grind tech-

nique today and swear by it. After my call, I turned to a few Industry experts for their opinion. Some Colorant Manufacturing Companies sell both liquid and dry, others strictly liquid. Estimates are 95 plus percent of the operations coloring mulch are using liquid colorant. Those that sell only liquid had some common facts that were repeated: • The process of creating a liquid provides the end user with a more effective product. Thus, a higher price per pound than the dry colorants. • Using a pound to pound comparison, which with the price of dry powder being significantly cheaper, makes the dry powder look very attractive. But with the lack of application controls that tends not to be the case in the overall cost. • Without mixing in a drum, the dry powder application is limited to applying in a grinder. Stand alone color machines or trommels wouldn’t have this effective of an application process. • When manufacturing liquid color, the dry powder used in the process is ground even finer to extend the coverage of the powder in the liquid. • The composition of the liquid colorant contains binders, resins and surfactants and other materials, just like house paint or wood stain, which enable the colorant to not only adhere to wood but to penetrate into it. Most of the color loss of mulch is from wood decomposition, not from the loss of the color. • Compare MSDS Sheets and how each needs to be handled and what safety equipment needs to be used for both. • Powder Colorants are used in concrete and mortar applications and then were just used the same way to color wood. A liquid mulch colorant was designed specifically to color wood in a mulch coloring machine. In speaking with TH Glennon owner, Brian Shea, he stated 20 percent of his sales are dry powder colorants. The main determining factor dictating the use of dry over liquid is the moisture content of the feedstock. Optimum moisture for colored mulch is 40 per-

cent, so if your feedstock is already at or near there, why add water he says. The dry colorant will be pounded into the moist wood with a grinder. The number one manufacturing issue with colored mulch is coloring operations using too much water. This leads to bad cov-

erage, wash off and runoff among other problems. While there are several other operational issues with the dry process, companies are going to continue to use it because it makes sense for their operations. The advice for those just starting a color operation?

• Use the liquid. It’s easier to control the application process and easier to figure out your cost. • Do lots of research, visit colorant manufacturers facilities and ask for factual demonstrations of liquid and dry colorants. • Research the Market area and decide which colors sell best in your area and start with just a few. • Decide what method of application you will start with. Still think dry is worth

a try? Do your homework. It’s easy to do. Ask your Colorant supplier if they offer dry powder and their opinion on its use. Then try it for yourself. Compare it to what you currently produce and ask your customers opinion. Thanks to www.amerimulch.com, www.colorbiotics.com and www.glennoncompany.com for their industry information. Electric grinder lowers operating costs by Jon M. Casey

ith ever increasing fuel prices an ongoing part of daily operations, it didn’t take Mike Hartman at H&H General Excavating, Inc. in Spring Grove, PA, long to make the decision to switch to an electric powered Diamond Z HZ 7000E grinder when it was time to replace their existing unit. Having owned several other Diamond Z grinders over the years, the decision was easy. “We found that it was time to replace our HDZ7000 diesel unit, we looked into an electric powered model as its replacement,” said Hartman. “So far, it has been an excellent experience.” Mike’s father Charlie, Founder of H&H General Excavating, Inc. recalled how they were one of the first recyclers in the nation to own the most powerful tub grinders that Diamond Z offered at the time. That was in the year 2000. Buying it was a big step for them at the time. “We had bought our first grinder in 1983 when we started grinding our own mulch as part of our gener-

That was when we worked with Diamond Z to develop the 1463B. That was the first of its kind in the U.S. It had a 1200 hp Cummins diesel engine in it,” he said. Since then, H&H has owned two 7000s and a 5000 series unit as well. Plant tour During our March 2013 visit, Mike Hershey, manager of daily operations at the grinding and bagging facility, took us on a tour of the plant where their new DHZ 7000E was in operation. “We received the new grinder last fall,” he said. “It has been operating smoothly since we first started it up.” Hershey explained that the switch to electrical power required hp, 480 volt electric drive motors power the mill and a 250 hp motor powers the grinder’s hydraulic system. “We have reduced our overall grinding costs significantly,” said Hershey. “Not only do we no longer have the regular maintenance items like lube, oil and

Charles Hartman, founder of H&H General Excavating, Inc., has turned over daily operations of the companies that make up H&H to his sons. “Charlie” spends a good deal of his time overseeing the development of Roth's Farm Village, an over 50’s condo community near Spring Grove, PA. filters to replace but our daily fuel bill has dropped by about three-fourths as well. We’ve gone from around $200 per hour for diesel fuel to about $65 per hour for electric.” According to Mike Hartman, that adds up quickly. “Our annual savings will be very helpful because while cost of operation has gone up over the years, the wholesale price of mulch has remained steady. This will give us some needed cost savings.” The grinder is configured as a portable model, which allows them to move it for debris cleaning from underneath the unit. This gives the crew easier cleanup following grinding operations. Since the grinder is in a central location, the need for a H&H’s new Diamond Z DZH 7000 electric horizontal grinder, is a powerful and quiet unit.

stationary power source is not a hindrance to daily use. Once material is ground, it goes to stockpiling as bulk mulch. From there, it is screened to be sold as bulk material for landscapers and lawn and garden services or as bagged product for sale in the retail market. Hershey said that the mulch ground from yard waste, tends to be darker and is used for black or brown colored products. The lighter “white” mulch that comes from the pine and lighter wood waste, is usually reserved for red mulch products. In either case, mulch to be colored is processed through the company’s new Colorbiotics Sahara X colorant system, where it is colored red, brown or black. On this day’s visit, they were producing black mulch. Hershey said that their Sahara X colorant system, which is new and has been in operation since February, is capable of coloring 250-300 yards per hour. “We monitor temperatures during the winter months and when it is above freezing, we color mulch in preparation for our spring sales,” he said. Material designated for bagging, goes to the bagging plant where it is bagged, palletized and prepared for shipment. During our visit, a private label composted soil product and Country Boy Topsoil were being bagged on two different production lines. This is at the rate of 26 bags per minute each! With both systems computerized and fully automated, only one or two workers are needed inside the plant to tend to the ongoing production process; a process that is extremely efficient. “We like to have 60 to 70 percent of our product needs on hand when the season starts,” Hershey said. “We start preparing for the upcoming year in September so we are ready when spring sales begin. From then until mid-June, we are continually busy keeping up with demand. We rebuild our stock in the summer months as we have opportunity.” Hershey said that they serve a variety of customers in the mid-Atlantic region including West Virginia and Ohio. Their bulk and bagged products go out to “Big Box” vendors, lawn and garden centers, landscapers and hardware stores. These products include their Country Boy branded products as well as private labeled soil and mulch products for co-packed customers. H&H’s product line includes colored and natural mulch products and soil blends as well. Hershey said that annual bagged production runs somewhere around five to six million bags shipped per year, while the bulk shipments total in the 200,000-cubic-yard range. Hershey said that right now, they are running 10 hour days, 5 days per week. When the season is a full production, they adjust acco-225-4669 or visit their website at www.h-hgenexc.com/index.html. On a second bagging line, topsoil is being bagged under H&H’s Country Boy label.

This is one of three new H&S manure spreaders that H&H has reworked into a magnet equipped materials feeder. Outfitted with a powerful metal debris magnet, the feeder is filled with freshly ground wood waste that is known to have metal debris in the load.

The grinding and coloring equipment is laid out in close proximity for easy accessability.

Loads of raw recyclables from several continual sources, are offloaded to be ground into mulch.

provides the added advantage of parallel lift for pallet moving and high tilt forces to handle large attachments. The PZ linkage also offers large break out forces to make bucket filling easy and quick. Ideal for loading material and earthmoving jobs, its lift force is increased by up to 10 percent compared to the WA320PZ-6 for improved

hard, such as when it is driving with an empty bucket. Komatsu SmartLoader Logic functions automatically and doesn’t interfere with operation, saving fuel without decreasing production. • Responsive Hydrostatic Powertrain System — Now in its third generation, the Komatsu hydrostatic (HST) drive train features increased pump capacity for higher efficiency and responsiveness. The self-braking effect of the HST drivetrain slows down the machine when the accelerator is released. Additionally, brake wear is practically eliminated. Control is enhanced which is especially important when working in tight places. The electronically controlled HST drivetrain features the Komatsu Traction Control System (KTCS) and facilitates operation in soft or slippery ground. Simplified traction controls feature three settings: MAX, AUTO and S-Mode. The Variable Speed Control (VSC) allows the operator to set a speed up to 8.1 mph for applications such as mowing or broom use. For slower speeds, the creeping speed range sets a speed up to 2.5 mph. • Convenient Maintenance and Serviceability — The WA320-7 provides easy service access to reduce downtime. The new wheel loader has increased cooling capacity, wider cooling fin spacing and a standard auto reversing fan to help keep the radiator clean. The machine is equipped with the exclusive Komatsu EMMS (Equipment Management Monitoring System), which provides enhanced diagnostic features that give the operator and technicians greater monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities. EMMS also continuously monitors all critical systems, as well as the planned maintenance schedule, and provides troubleshooting assistance to minimize diagnosis and repair time. • Enhanced Operator Environment — The new cab provides a more comfortable and quieter work environment so the operator can maximize pro-

TETERBORO, NJ — The ALLU® D-Series screener crusher bucket attachment works with wheel loaders, excavators and skid steers to screen, crush, pulverize, aerate, blend, mix, separate, feed and load materials all in one stage increasing the profitability and efficiency of recycling operations. It easily separates and screens most materials, including bio waste, construction and demolition waste, glass tires and other materials onsite. The ALLU power adjustment valve promotes powerful startup and rotation allowing the attachment to efficiently screen and crush wet or dry material from 0.60 to 6-inch fragment sizes. Straight side plate construction makes the ALLU D-Series screener crusher buckets easy to fill and able to hold a greater volume of material, while the standard power adjustment valve prevents overloads. Locating the hydraulics on the back of the attachment keeps them well protected from damage, while patented fender plates protect the bearings and seals. Its patented construction keeps nuts and bolts away from the material flow. ALLU

D-Series Screener Crusher Bucket attachments are available in over 60 models to fit any excavator, wheel loader, skid steer or backhoe. To lower overall usage costs, the ALLU Screener Crusher Buckets feature changeable wear hammers for crushing applications. Universal wear hammers are used for most applications and materials. Long wear hammers are recommended for screening and aerating compost and other soft materials to increase capacity. Axe wear hammers are ideal for crushing bark and mixing compost, while oval wear hammers are designed for screening material with high stone content or when reduced crushing effect is needed. 10 mm thick screening discs extend the life of the attachment when processing many types of material, including topsoil, black top and dirt, excavated and waste soil, contaminated soil, clay, peat, bark, compost, bio

waste, demolition waste, construction waste, milled asphalt, glass, coal, oil shale, limestone and other materials. The ALLU D-Series Screener Crusher Bucket also saves money by lowering transportation costs. It can be easily moved around the jobsite or to different sites as it’s mounted on an excavator, wheel loader, skid steer or backhoe. ALLU Group offers a complete line of technologically advanced screening, crushing, windrow turning, soil stabilizing and compacting equipment and attachments for the asphalt, compost, environmental, recycling, green waste, demolition and pipeline industries. ALLU Group is ISO 9001:2000 certified. For more information, contact ALLU Group, 700 Huyler St., Teterboro, NJ 07608. Call 800-939-2558, fax 201288-4479, e-mail usa@allu.net or visit www.allu.net.

Sahara X3 System provides consistant color by Jon M. Casey

H&H’s new Colorbiotics Sahara X3 colorant system is installed near the new Diamond Z DZH 7000 electric grinder for efficient mulch coloring. The “white” mulch stockpiled on the left, will become red mulch. The whiter base material makes a brighter, more durable product. H&H General Excavating, Inc. found themselves needing a way to color ground wood mulch products in a consistant way in order to satisfy their customers who were looking for colored products, that matched from season to season and from batch to batch. This was especially true for customers shopping for

bagged mulch products. Since H&H had previously been coloring their mulch with a homemade color batching system, they knew that they needed a commercial system developed and perfected specifically to do a consistant job while at the same time, using colorants that

were long lasting and consistant from year to year. With that as the goal, they recently took delivery of a Sahara® X3 coloring system from Colorbiotics. “We took delivery on this new system in February 2013,” said Mike Hershey, who oversees the mulch operations for H&H. “We needed a reliable system that could keep up with the demands that we have for volume. This unit will do upwards of 300-cubic-yards of mulch per hour. We routinely run between 250 and 300 yards per hour. Right now, we are coloring black mulch.” Hershey said that while their home made coloring system worked well, it was not able to meet their current needs. Because of the limits that it had with mixing and metering of colorant, and because the system was on in years, it was ready to be replaced. He said they wanted a system that was simple to operate and designed for the kind of production rates that H&H required. With the Sahara X3, they can color mulch just about as fast as Mick Mummert, their loader operator, can keep it filled with uncolored mulch. The colorant comes in easily transportable totes that they purchase in truckload quantities. Mummert, who is responsible for the daily operation of the colorant system, is able to operate the Sahara X3 remotely, from the cab of his 966H loader. “Mick does a great job for us,” said Hershey. “He is able to keep us supplied with whichever color product we need. The new unit has run flawlessly, and we are extremely pleased with it.” According to Colorbiotics, the Sahara system uses true atomizing technology. The Sahara requires up to 50 percent less water and minimal colorant to

produce the industry’s highest quality and lowest cost colored mulch. The patented Sahara system is loaded with features designed to increase profitability and reduce drying time along with other challenges such as mold, faded looking mulch and wash off. The Sahara boasts the most aggressive mixing chamber in the industry. That ensures maximum surface to colorant exposure. It’s built to last long under extreme duty, and its fully automated control panel makes it a one person operation. Colorbiotics says that the Sahara X Series is the most efficient mulch coloring system in the world. It delivers perfectly colored mulch with much less water and colorant, so producers can bag and ship product immediately after coloring. The H&H Sahara X3 unit is powered by three phase electricity which makes it an ideal fit as a complimentary tool to go with their new Diamond Z electric grinder. For more information on the Sahara X System or Colorbiotics colorant products, visit them online at www.colorbiotics.com.

The Colorbiotics Sahara X3 system uses less water and colorant than the previous way that H&H was coloring their mulch.

Darker mulch is loaded into the Colorbiotics Sahara X3 colorant system. Today, they are making black mulch.

A loader operator moves material stockpiled near the bagging facility.

Mulch that has just been colored black, is conveyed onto a stockpile at a lower level where it will be used as bagged or bulk product depending on material size. The mulch is screened before bagging and the smaller material goes out as bulk material while the preferred larger product is bagged and palletized for the retail bag customers.

Mick Mummert oversees keeping the Sahara X3 full. Here he fills the hopper with a 966H loader.

USCC announces 2012 award winners Urban agriculturist, composter and food justice advocate Will Allen of Growing Power was recognized by the United States Composting Council (USCC)for his outstanding service to the composting industry through grassroots efforts by being named the 2012 recipient of the H. Gregory Clark Award. The awards ceremony was held during the USCC 21st Annual Conference and Tradeshow in Orlando, FL on Jan. 30, during which Mr. Allen presented to, and deeply inspired, an audience of over 200 composting industry professionals. Mr. Allen said he was honored to be recognized by an association of professionals who, like himself, understands “it’s all about the soil.” The H. Clark Gregory Award is given to an individual who has displayed outstanding service to the composting industry through various grassroots efforts, including backyard composting, vermi-composting, or public or end user education. Growing Power produces and sells vermicompost every year, and provides compost education to thousands of individuals from around the world through workshops and facility tours. “Will’s indefatigable effort to educate the public on the importance of growing healthy soil, nutritious food and safe, thriving communities has had a tremendous impact on our nation’s understanding of composting and its role in the urban agriculture movement,” said Michael Virga, USCC executive director. “Will points out, as do our members, that the road

to healthy, sustainable living begins with the soil beneath our feet.” Also recognized at the awards luncheon was compost pioneer Francis Gouin, Ph.D., of the University of Maryland (retired), as the 2012 recipient of the Hi Kellogg Award for outstanding service to the composting industry. Dr. Gouin is a nationally and internationally recognized scientist and extension specialist in the area of compost use and ornamental and environmental horticulture. During his career he served as Chair of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland, authored hundreds of papers, articles and newsletters and developed the Master Composters Program in conjunction with the Master Gardeners program in Maryland. Jeffrey Ziegenbein, of Inland Empire Regional Composting Authority (IERCF), received the 2012 Composter of the Year Award for excellence in compost production and marketing. The IERCF was constructed in a retrofitted IKEA warehouse, processes 200,000 wet tons of organic material per year and is the largest indoor composting facility in North America. Incoming USCC President Lorrie Loder was welcomed to her new position and the USCC recognized past USCC presidents: Sharon Barnes (1999), Stuart Buckner (2000), Jack Hoeck (2001), Kevin Tritz (2002-2004), Carl Kipp, Jr. (2005), Matthew Cotton (2006-2008), Wayne King, Sr. (20092010) and Frank Franciosi (2011-2012).
