Hey Grinder Guy, do these plastic vacuums really work? In a word, “maybe.” In theory, if you put enough horsepower behind a fan, you should be able to pull plastic off a conveyor belt. But the plastic needs to be on top of the material passing underneath the fan for that to work. In addition, all the fines need to be removed from the material or the suction of the fan will be pulling all the fine debris also. That is why you cannot use these fans on finished products coming off the fines discharge conveyors. My only experience with these types of equipment has been with the Komptech Hurrikan units and the windsifter option added to the Komptech Star Screens and there are three things that make them work so well: 1. Plastic or inert materials need to be on top of the other materials; 2. Suction area needs to be where the material can be free floating; and 3. Input of the material needs to be a reduced consistent flow. Trying to take a pile of just contaminated overs and process it through a machine to remove the inerts does not work well. There are too many contaminants and too much volume. Take charge of the issue when you are creating it. For example, having the reduced flow and consistent flow from an overs conveyor coming from a screen of any kind will work well for a removal opera-
tion. Also, being able to use the suction of the fan as the material cascades off a screen deck, any screen deck, is another good option. If you are setting up your own operation or trying other systems look for the following: 1. Have the ability or the option of installing a fan underneath the material to lift debris to the surface and create free floating particles like the Komptech Hurrikan does. This is why it works so well. 2. For pulling off contaminants look for the availability of two fans instead of one. You get twice the air movement with less horsepower and for heavier contamination you will need this. 3. Look for a magnetic head pulley option. Any nails your grinder missed sure do have a way of making it back into your mulch. 4. Everyone get some sort of stone in there material, so adding a stone trap on the discharge conveyor is easy to do and will remove the stones for you giving you a higher quality product. While the Komptech Hurrikan does all this, it does come at a price. So what should you do? Which materials, if they were clean, would give you the best economic boost? It’s not just what material you sell for the highest dollar, it’s what is costing you the most. Moving material piles, trucking to the landfill, whatever. What will give you the
best economic benefit? 1. Define your problem and its source; 2. Define your budget; and 3. Choose which contaminants to remove first. The additional options can be added later. In closing, while we are discussing material contaminants, many new stone type separators have come on the market. Removing the stone from your yard cleanup material, removing stone from your mulch or compost is easily done today. The most benefit I have
seen though is from removing rock from Construction and Demolition debris destined for the landfill. It is difficult to see the volume of heavies in a pile of shredded C&D, but after you run it through a stone separator, your wallet will be much heavier with the money you saved on disposal. WALTON, KY — Steinert US, a leading supplier of separation equipment for the scrap, waste, recycling and mining markets, has announced the retirement of Dennis Ciccotelli, Scrap Market vice president. Ciccotelli has worked with Steinert U.S. since its inception in the United States and will officially retire on May 31, 2013. This announcement comes as Dennis nears 50 years of dedicated service to the recycling industry. Among Ciccotelli’s lengthy record of career achievements is his work with Steinert U.S. During his tenure with Steinert, Dennis was integral in aiding the company’s growth from a resale entity with three employees to a full service corporation with over 30 employees. Dennis began his career in 1964 as a crane and monorail engineer, following a career path that eventually led to positions as operations manager with Camden Iron & Metal, Inc. and then Resource Recycling, LLC. His position at Resource Recycling led him to represent Steinert GmbH in the United States before ultimately taking a position in the newly formed entity of Steinert US in 2003. “During my time, I watched as the profit driven scrap industry grew into the recycling industry driven by the good of all mankind.” Said Ciccotelli. “What was done by hand at a few pounds per hour is now accomplished by machines at a hundred tons or more per hour. Workers, no longer in harms way, monitor technology systems instead of picking and chopping at metals by hand. or quasar Energy Group President, Melvin Kurtz, the use of the phrase “coming full circle,” describes how his company’s recycling and energy production benefits people on a grand scale. With customers who rely upon quasar’s electrical and natural gas production and their Equate™ naturally balanced NPK agricultural soil amendment product, quasar’s future seems to have unlimited potential. At the same time, quasar has an increasing number of suppliers who bring them recyclable waste material that quasar turns into commodities. Their idea of generating a sustainable source of electrical power while at the same time creating other much needed fuel and fertilizer products is a reality that has been evolving since 2006.

Kurtz recalled how quasar began as part of a partnership with a German company as they worked to develop an anaerobic digester to convert municipal sludge into electrical and natural gas energy for the city of Akron, Ohio. The partner company went out of business, but quasar took the best of the European technology that they were using, converted it to American standards over the next three years, and quasar was born. Now 99 percent of a facility’s components are made in the United States, with approximately 80 percent of them made in Ohio. He said they perfected the membrane roof designs, now using their own. They developed their own mixing equipment, stands and foundations, with everything meeting U.S. regulatory requirements. Since that first facility, quasar has gone on to install digesters at 10 locations. Currently they have plants that are on line or under construction in Ohio, New York and Massachusetts. Capabilities “Anaerobic digesters are the ideal way to convert organic residuals into renewable energy, reduce your carbon footprint and the result is cleaner air, soil and water,” said Kurtz. “We have taken a European style agricultural installation and converted it for use in an industrial environment.” At each facility, they generate electricity in some capacity, with some of the units working in partnership with Air Products, Inc. to produce natural gas after taking out the H2S, then drying it before separating the CO2 from the methane, and making pipeline quality gas. At this point, quasar is able to compress the gas to make motor vehicle fuel in the form of CNG. “We have converted about 30 company vehicles to run on our own brand of motor vehicle fuel we call qng™,” he said. “Twenty seven of them are our company vehicles.” The process “We take in material in trailer loads. We use materials like organic crop residuals, sewage sludge, fats, oils and grease, with some of it coming from Fortune

We depackage it, recycling the cardboard and plastic from the packaging, and put the organics into the digester, with the effluent being used to manage the composted material using the Komptech X-53 Windrow Turner.” Kurtz said that most composters run the leaves that they recycle, in a grinder or shredder of some kind, because leaves will not break down until their surface is disturbed. However, at the quasar plants that work on the “complete mix” formulation (a high liquid lower solids blend of materials), they use a Komptech windrow turner outfitted with the irrigation option to incorporate the effluent from the digester into the windrows. They make several passes with the unit because the added moisture helps to speed up the time that it takes for the compost to

mature. He noted that they add one pound of a special admixture, branded by quasar as q-bio™, per 1000 gallons of effluent, which works to mitigate the odor and shorten compost time. “A similar admixture has been used in Europe for almost two decades. It does not eliminate the odor, but it mitigates the traditional odor that you would associate with sewage sludge or organic volatile solids. When you incorporate the admixture with the windrow turner, it adheres to the surface of the leaves, making the biological process that usually takes eight or nine months to break down the leaves, take only three months to make compost. We can convert raw leaves into a marketable composted product in less than half the time.” The effluent is about 93 percent water, so being exothermic, the windrows heat from the inside out and the liquid evaporates. That leaves high value nutrients in the compost. In this case, the nutrients are not running off and being wasted, but they are retained in the material. Currently, the effluent is not only used for injection into the windrows, but it is also transported to farmland for application where permits are already in place. Future plans are to use as much as possible in the windrows. That will depend upon additional windrow turners with injection systems coming on line at the various locations. New ideas “We have currently partnered with The Ohio State University to develop a ‘dry’ digester that is designed for cellulosic material as its primary biomass source,” Kurtz added. Instead of being a slurry based “wet” design, they are looking for 70 to 80 percent proportion of solids to liquids in the digester at the Zanesville, Ohio location. “The Ohio State University will plant a cellulosic grass, Miscanthus giganteus, to harvest for fuel for this digester,” he said. “That is a patent pending process that is showing excellent results. This digester produces natural gas. This is our first one of this kind.” Kurtz said that because of his association with Kurtz Bros., Inc., quasar has a ready wholesale outlet for their composted material. His brother Tom has grown Kurtz Bros. to be the largest originator of composted material in the state of Ohio. From taking bio-waste in the form of municipal waste, livestock manure, food waste, yard waste and wood waste materials, and turning it into natural gas, compressed natural gas, electrical power and composted material for agricultural application, Kurtz rightly says that quasar’s technology uses a process that brings things “full circle.” For more information about quasar energy group, visit their website at www.quasarenergygroup.com. ment and livestock production applications. The new DL250-3 does more than meet the iT4 regulations, as its improvements have been designed to result in increased performance and greater reliability. More power and greater fuel efficiency The 3.7-cubic-yard DL250-3 has been reintroduced as a 172 hp iT4 wheel loader — up from 163 hp in its previous design. It is engineered with a breakout force of 27,120-pounds, a full turn tipping capacity of 20,680-pounds and a dump height of 9-feet 2 -inches. For those requiring additional dumping capabilities, the DL250-3 is also available in a high lift configuration, extending the dump height 18inches above the standard DL250, to 10-feet 8-inches. This wheel loader’s new auto idle feature provides additional noise reduction and fuel savings by reducing the working idle of the wheel loader from 950 rpm to a standby idle setting of 750 rpm when the machine is inactive for a short period of time. Increased performance Designed with improved lifting performance, the DL250-3 offers operators the ability to set upper and lower limits for both the lift arm and bucket stop positions from inside the cab. Better lifting capabilities improve cycle times in digging and loading applications, while
providing better control of the lift arm and bucket positions. An optional fourth spool control valve provides operators the capability to utilize an attachment that requires an additional hydraulic function, e.g., some snowblowers and snow blades. To keep the wheel loader running at optimal performance in dirty and dusty conditions, the DL250-3 incorporates a new automatic-reversing cooling fan. The operator can manually reverse the fan via a switch, or set it to automatically reverse on a preset time frame. Each time the fan reverses, it will run in reverse for a few minutes to clean the cooling system. This results in longer working hours and shorter maintenance time to clean the cooling system. Operators can also expect upgraded driving performance options. As an alternative to the standard limited slip differential, the DL250-3 offers an optional hydraulic locking front differential. Based on ground conditions, the operator can choose to lock the differential manually with a floor mounted foot switch, or allow the machine to automatically engage the system. This provides increased driving power when one wheel spins or loses traction and improves machine performance when navigating tough terrain.

Doosan from 11 This Doosan wheel loader is equipped with six cylinder DL06 diesel engine that has been optimized for use with cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) system, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Engines with this configuration are optimized to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOX) and after treatment is needed to reduce particulate matter, to comply with iT4 emission regulations. The 360-cubic-inch engine features a high pressure common rail (HPCR) design with direct fuel injection, electronic control and four valves per cylinder. The HPCR system increases the efficiency of fuel delivery via increased pressure. The increased pressure allows the injector to inject a finer mist into the engine, which results in a more efficient combustion that in turn produces more torque and improved fuel economy, less noise, lower operating costs and cleaner exhaust. Reliability Service intervals on the front lift arm pins have increased fivefold, from 50 to 250 hours, reduc-
ing operating costs and downtime. Tilt cylinder hydraulic hoses have been rerouted for improved hose reliability, better hose movement and improved visibility to the attachment. Enhanced comfort Interior cabin improvements also include a number of multi-function display panel upgrades on a centralized monitor that allows the operator

The centralized monitor displays critical machine information — such as engine rpm, engine coolant temperature, fuel level, machine warnings, time and the transmission selected gear. New Case 521F wheel loader achieves advanced performance, fuel efficiency with new features and SCR emissions technology RACINE, WI — Case Construction Equipment today introduced the new Case 521F wheel loader, offering customers a 12 percent increase in fuel efficiency over the previous E Series model, while delivering faster acceleration and quicker cycle times. The machine is available in standard Zbar, extended reach and tool carrier models, and is the latest offering in the company’s F Series wheel loader line, which boasts premium features and industry leading performance, productivity and efficiency. Case chose selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology for the 521F to meet Tier 4 Interim emissions standards based on the machine’s application tasks and power demands. SCR results in lower temperatures in the exhaust system while optimizing combustion. “SCR was the obvious choice for the 521F because a wheel loader’s tasks are more variable, creating inconsistent engine loads and power demands,” said Rob Marringa, brand marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment. “Rather than compromise power, we let the engine do what it does best — run at peak performance — and then use an after treatment for emissions.” According to Marringa, the benefits of SCR technology are greater efficiency and reduced downtime because there’s no heightened fuel burn or diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration. In addition, lower ambient temperatures means slower degradation of lubricating oil, which extends service intervals. Furthermore, fewer engine components means less crowding under the hood and easier access to service points. Operators also will experience a faster throttle response and cleaner emissions by

These axles, with auto locking front and open rear differentials, have the same design as the larger F series wheel loader axles, including metal face seals and sintered bronze brake linings. They offer outstanding traction in all conditions, especially in non-compacted surfaces like gravel and help reduce tire wear when working on hard surfaces. “The heavy duty axles have superior sealing capability and longer service lives, improving owner and operator costs,” Marringa said. “In addition, they can accept higher load capacities, allowing operators to configure the unit with solid, foam filled or chain wrapped tires.” On a 50 meter loading and dumping cycle, Case estimates the 521F wheel loader can make up to 56 cycles per hour, moving up to 144-square-yards or 212 tons of material per hour. Advanced instruments and cab improve machine and operator effectiveness The new advanced instrument cluster (AIC) on the 521F wheel loader has four operating modes, allowing operators and service technicians full visibility and control of basic job functions, such as diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level and fuel efficiency, as well as protective controls that can help eliminate costly repairs. “Auto Idle is a fuel saving feature that allows for
multiple idle rates, thereby reducing fuel consumption while operators are waiting for the next truck to load or task to be completed,” said Marringa. “As an additional benefit to the Case wheel loader customer, Automatic Machine Protection recognizes a critical problem with the hydraulics, engine or transmission, and shuts down the engine as soon as the machine stops moving.” The Case 521F wheel loader delivers class leading comfort and visibility and new features to improve operator effectiveness. Case’s Quiet Cab boasts the largest cab in the industry, has a 70.8 decibel rating, and supplies cleaner air with a dual air filtration system. It also provides a more comfortable ride with an optional heated air ride seat and ergonomically positioned controls that ensure a long day in the cab won’t reduce productivity. “The 521F wheel loader has new options such as joystick steering, a rear view camera and heated side mirrors that allow for precise control and visibility in tough conditions such as snow plowing and truck loading,” Marringa said. Case’s floor to ceiling windows and improved lighting system continue to provide excellent visibility, from the cutting edge of a bucket to the tip of a fork. More selection, larger attachments The 521F wheel loader
can handle heavier and much larger buckets thanks to the Case coupler system that pulls the attachment closer to the machine, providing significant breakout. The coupler is compatible with both JRB and ACS attachments. Also, the addition of over 250 new buckets, including light material buckets, rotary brooms and forks, and 4-
in-1 buckets, means the 521F wheel loader offers even more solutions for a wide range of tasks. The offering includes Case SmartFitTM bucket tooth systems. The SmartFit system provides stronger, more durable teeth and adapters, and hammerless reusable locking pins to improve digging performance. The Case 521F wheel
loader features a 4.5 liter Tier 4 Interim-certified Case engine that delivers up to 131 gross hp. Classified as a 2.1square-yard wheel loader, the Case 521F has an operating weight of 22,856-pounds. ike Merner’s composting journey has been a circuitous one. He was educated at the University of Rhode Island, where he studied agriculture at a time when society’s thinking was “better living through chemistry.” Mike became very knowledgeable about chemical pest control and crop yield increases, skills that he put to use in his landscaping business. He soon became disillusioned, however, when he began to see the damage that many of these practices were doing to soil health. Along the way, he was troubled because at home, he was practicing organic gardening, organic lawn care, and working to improve his own soil’s health, while at his landscaping business, he was still using the current chemical products for dealing with pest and weed control. Feeling hypocritical, he turned to his own compost for soil nutrition and microbial activity. Merner maintains, “All we have to do to raise healthy plants and animals is to return nutrients to the earth with well made compost.” At that time, organics were just beginning to gain attention in Rhode Island; so as a result, Merner

became an important part of the movement’s growth. He was one of the founders of the Rhode Island chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA). In the 1980’s, he was a part of the first group of Rhode Island farmers to be awarded organic certification. Since that time, almost 30 years, Earth Care Farm has been synonymous with high quality organics in Rhode Island. The farm’s famous compost attracts gardeners and lawn care people from across Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Additionally, his operation specializes in custom raised beef and pork, pick your own strawberries, raspberries and rhubarb. In the past few years, the farm has offered apples, peaches, cherries and pears. Managing such a variety of products on a relatively small piece of land can be challenging. Merner handles it with the help of his Kubota LA724. He uses the mower and harrow attachments to establish and maintain his perennial crops. Most of the time however, the tractor’s front bucket is in highest demand. Merner likes to use it to load pickup trucks with the farm’s most popular product: compost. The composting process at Earth Care Farm is lengthy and requires careful management. The first step is acquiring the raw materials. Manure from the farm’s livestock starts the process. Fish gurry, a by-product of the state is fishing industry, and shellfish make up a significant portion of the nitrogen requirement for Earth Care Farm’s compost as well. Merner used to receive gurry daily from the anglers at nearby Galilee. The state’s regulations changed, severely limiting the catch for local fishermen, so his fish products now come from Quonset, RI and as far away as New Bedford, MA. A large percentage of the carbon materials for the compost comes from municipal waste such as leaves, wood chips, etc. As a way to reduce the odors that come from the composting process, Merner has weighted the compost’s carbon-to-nitrogen ratio heavily towards carbon. As a result, it takes about one year for the final product to be ready. Merner says that farm manager, John Buth, turns the piles 5-6 times per week with a Hyundai HL 7609a, a 4-cubic-yard articulated wheel loader. Usually the farm operates two wheel loaders but for now, they have four. The reason is economic. For years, Merner purchased Daewoo (and then Doosan) loaders, trading in the older models against the purchase price of the newer ones. Merner is now entertaining offers for the 2005 Daewoo (complete with a brand new Tier 4 engine) and 2008 Doosan. A change in marketing Over the years, the quality of the products at Earth Care Farm has remained the same. The labeling has not. A couple years ago, Merner voluntarily pulled his organic certification because of philosophical differences with the direction “organics” is headed. This action adversely affected the organic farmers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut who relied on his compost. They preferred his gurry and shellfish based mixture to the municipal mixes that are sold in the area. Since Merner’s label change, those customers only have access to municipal waste compost unless they travel to northern New England for an organic alternative. Accordingly, by dropping his organic affiliation, Merner has seen a large shift in his customer base. Organic farmers are no longer able to use his product without sacrificing their own certification. The economy has exacerbated the changes. Merner observes, “We thought we’d be immune to the recession, but our customers weren’t.” Landscapers were once Merner’s largest clientele. As the economy struggled, the volume of compost purchased by landscapers decreased. In the place of these commercial clients, have arisen “the gardeners,” a customer group of community gardens, church gardens, and home gardens, the vast majority lining up to purchase Earth Care Farm compost. Merner feels there is still great, untapped potential for compost. He believes there are significant amounts of uncomposted carbonaceous materials waiting to be turned into food for the earth. He tells the story of going to an event in a LEED certified building and noticing that the meal was served on compostable plates. When he asked where the composting bins were located he was informed, “Oh, we just put them in the trash.” The irony was not lost on Merner. The mission of Earth Care Farm is to “joyfully help bring out the best and highest health from within the earth by consciously returning the best to the earth.” He sees composting as a critical component of that mission. Design changes cut 80 percent from setup of Superior’s swing axle telestacker conveyor Superior Industries, North America’s only combination manufacturer of conveyor systems and their related accessories, says its engineers cut major setup time required to transition a swing axle TeleStacker conveyor from transport to radial positions. The new swing axle XTP TeleStacker conveyor shifts from road to radial mode in just five to ten minutes. That is compared to 45 to 60 minutes for the original model, a design still common to competitive swing axle telescopic conveyors. Three key design features characterize the next generation swing axle XTP. First, to engage the stacker’s power travel, chains and sprockets are replaced with a preinstalled t-handle mechanism. While the chain and sprocket arrangement takes up to 30 minutes to install, requires maintenance and can be tricky to guard, the new power travel system takes just seconds to engage and needs no maintenance or guarding. Secondly, the new axle design requires fewer link
arms during both transport and operational modes. This modification again helps to reduce setup time. Lastly, the addition of a pivoting walking beam allows for true wheel alignment during radial travel. Poor alignment results in tire scuffing and can even cause a conveyor’s feed point to shift out of position. The Model 1230 Metal Detector is engineered for installation on conveyor belts carrying coal, minerals, aggregates and other bulk materials. It can be tuned to ignore conductive or magnetic ores such as magnetite and pyrite, even if they are carried by high tension, steel corded belts with rip detection loops, while still detecting small pieces of tramp metal. The Model 1235 Metal Detector has the unique ability to detect and discriminate between magnetic and non-magnetic tramp metals. Installing the Model 1235 Metal Detector with the magnet activation circuit before a Suspended Electromagnet allows the 1235 to control the magnet power based on the presence of magnetic tramp metal, which will enable the customer to conserve energy and save money. The Model 1241 Metal Detector is designed primarily for scanning whole logs on conveyors or chutes for all types of tramp metal, magnetic and non-magnetic, to protect hogs and debarkers. It is also ideal for applications requiring large openings and high metal sensitivities. The Model 1250 Metal Detector is the most sensitive metal detector of all the Model 1200 Series units.
