WELCOME

Welcome to the 2013 Ei Forum. Since 2006, Redeemer has been nurturing a movement of gospel entrepreneurship that starts innovative organizations and businesses committed to cultural renewal and serving the common good. As we enter our eighth year, God continues to grow this movement with more partners and entrepreneurs.

We believe the gospel changes everything: our hearts, our relationships, and the world around us. Those of you who work inside larger organizations bring the hope of the gospel to your workplaces. Entrepreneurs, along with their investors and advisors, have the opportunity to create organizations that embody the gospel from day one and top down. We see pockets of church communities empowering its people to launch new cultural, business and non-profit institutions that glorify God in cities across the country. The entrepreneurial journey is a hard one filled with Risk and we seek to discern between folly and faith.

The Ei Forum is more than an experience - it is a call to use our God-given resources and creative talents to collaborate, share risk, share rewards, to point toward the Gospel. Thank you for committing to this vision and community.

ABOUT Ei

T

The Entrepreneurship Initiative [Ei] was launched by Redeemer’s Center for Faith & Work in 2006 to encourage and support entrepreneurs within our congregation who have a bold vision to start new arts, for-profit, or not-for-profit ventures that foster shalom and bring about gospel-centered renewal in the city. The initiative has now expanded into a movement beyond Redeemer, as churches in other cities participate in the Ei Forum and develop ways to serve entrepreneurs in their own communities.

6

ABOUT Ei WHY +

To live out the gospel in our work, bringing its message of hope, love and justice to cities around the world.

+

To start new city-serving, gospel-manifesting ventures that address unmet needs.

+

To unleash the church’s untapped potential — some risk their time and money; others lend their creativity, expertise and resources.

Ei Network — connects people with skills and experience to mentor, partner with and consult new ventures and their entrepreneurs.

Ei Leadership — the Ei grew out of Redeemer’s Center for Faith & Work under the leadership of a 12-person steering committee who have guided the vision, coached our entrepreneurs and drawn others into the movement.

After eight years the Ei Forum has grown by word-of-mouth to include hundreds of participants who seek to nurture entrepreneurs and city-serving ventures in their own cities.

THEOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS Core Elements + Gospel Centrality — the gospel is the core of all Christian truth and alone is the power for changed lives and spheres of culture. + Changed Lives —the gospel gives us new hearts that change why we work, what we create, and how we do it. + COMPASSION AND JUSTICE — the gospel motivates us to work to bring justice for the poor, reconciliation to broken relationships, healing for the sick and to reweave the social and spiritual fabric of our culture. + Cultural Renewal — the gospel helps us bring the love, justice and mercy of God into all the spheres of culture in which we live and work. + Gospel Movement — the gospel, and our gratefulness for it, must be the anchor for people who build and lead organizations in all sectors to serve others instead of ourselves. The gospel compels us to seek the flourishing of our cities. Our relationship with God gives us the courage and perseverance to try new things and challenge cultural norms.

Ei Forum 2013

The Ei grew out of Redeemer’s strong theological foundations and vision for cultural engagement and renewal. We seek to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the gospel at work - in our hearts, in our relationships, and in our engagement with the world.

GOSPEL–CENTERED VENTURE AWARDS

In response to the growing interest in the gospel entrepreneurship movement, Redeemer’s Entrepreneurship Initiative (Ei) and the One Institute have created the Gospel-Centered Venture Awards (“GCVA”) program. The GCVA program seeks to gather together gospel-centered entrepreneurs in an ecosystem that bears witness to a movement of the gospel in our cities and culture. Together we can encourage each other in our appreciation of the gospel and in our outworking of the gospel in every aspect of our work and leadership.

KATHERINE LEARY ALSDORF FOUNDER, Center for Faith and Work Having founded CFW in 2002, Katherine served as its Executive Director until December 2012. In this role, she set the vision and strategy of the Center’s core programs, developed lay and staff leadership, and guided strategic partnerships. Prior to this ministry role, Katherine spent twenty years in the high tech industry in California and New York. She was CEO of Pensare, an online management education company; CEO of One Touch Systems, a hardware/software products company; and President of Private Satellite Network, a satellite services company. She also worked in various consulting, sales and marketing roles, primarily in the technology sector. She received her BA from Wittenberg University, her MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School, and has taken seminary classes at Regent College. PRAYER OF EXAMEN PRAYER OF EXAMEN //

See Pg 68 for full details //

The Daily Examen was a spiritual discipline developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), founder of the Jesuit Order to help Christians become more self-aware and aware of Christ’s presence in the midst of daily life. In our hectic world today, it is easy to lose track of our own selves and lose sight of the risks that we are taking. This can easily create underlying anxieties and stress that diminish our abilities and our sense of what it means to be a Christian. We can also easily become increasingly unaware of the grace that surrounds us, causing us to depend more and more on ourselves and less upon God. This adapted prayer will help us become more aware of the risks that we take each day, and to surrender them to Christ, exchanging our uncertainties for His peace. The devotional is a modified version of the “Prayer of Examen” adapted for our theme of risk. The steps are designed to help you connect each day to possible risks that are taken; however, often there are deeper risks underlying the surface-level risks we take. The gospel is able to powerfully address these root level risks so that we build our lives upon a solid foundation rather than sand, moving us from folly to faith. This devotional has two parts, taking a total of 30 minutes: 15 minutes for Scripture reading and 15 minutes for examination. We recommend going through this Prayer daily for a season of 3–5 weeks and suggest you read the book of Proverbs one chapter at a time. Write your thoughts and prayers in a journal so that you can begin to discern trends and areas of growth in this season.

PLENARY B Drs. David & Janet Kim //

Co-Founders Beacon Christian Community Heath Center //

Drs. David and Janet Kim are physicians and co-founders of Beacon Christian Community Health Center, New York State’s first faith-based, federal and state-certified nonprofit health center, serving a community of over 30,000 medically underserved in northwestern Staten Island, New York City. Under their leadership, the health center has grown from a clinical staff of 3 providers providing 3,200 visits in 2006 when it first opened, to a staff of eleven providers, providing comprehensive medical care for adults and children, including women’s health services, totaling over 14,000 annual visits. As the largest health care delivery entity in Mariners Harbor, Beacon initiated new services to its community, including podiatry care, structured health education and case management services. In 2012, Beacon was one of 3 sites in New York City selected as a grantee from HealthHIV, whose goal is to integrate HIV screening, diagnosis, and treatment in a primary care setting. Beacon has been highly involved in emergency preparedness for its local community and Staten Island, as well as being an active site for medical services during times of public health emergencies and disasters. During both Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, the health center was mobilized to provide emergency triage services for non-critical patients as a way of mitigating patient surge in the local hospitals’ emergency rooms. Encouraged by Katherine Alsdorf to explore God-centered healthcare entrepreneurship, Beacon ultimately entered and became a co-winner of the 2008 Business Plan Competition, and in partnership with the Center for Faith & Work, has continued to explore how to break down barriers between Christians in healthcare, their profession, and their communities. The Kims reside in Staten Island with their four children and attend Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Both David & Janet are active members of Christian Medical & Dental Associations, as well as Christian Community Health Fellowship (CCHF), a national network of Christian health centers and clinics working in rural and urban settings. Both enjoy teaching and mentoring students and residents, focusing on the roles of Christian health professionals in a secular society.

PLENARY B Ben WASHER //

Founder, Reach Records //

Ben Washer always had an entrepreneurial streak in him, and when he saw the powerful role hip-hop played in the lives of urban youth while working at a sports camp, the idea for Reach Records was born. Neither Washer nor the label’s other co-founder had any real experience in the music industry, however, and had no way of knowing what it would eventually become. Today, nearly a decade after its founding in 2003, the label has a staff of 16 employees and interns, with six hip-hop artists on its roster. Among these artists is Lecrae, who is also co-owner of the label. His new record Gravity debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 when it was released in September, receiving praise from mainstream and Christian outlets alike. In recent years he has also gained a unique audience among professional athletes, periodically leading chapel services for teams in the NBA, NFL, and MLB.

WO R KSH OPS

AM WORKSHOPS Create Ei in Your City - Katherine Leary Alsdorf Churches in a number of cities have developed a vision for supporting entrepreneurs who want to create gospel-centered organizations. Come think through the context of your own church and community. Help develop a strategy for building a nationwide ecosystem of investors, advisors, pastors and entrepreneurs with a mind to cultural engagement and renewal.

Honest Feedback: The incredible gift no one receives - Max Anderson Getting and giving good feedback can be extraordinarily helpful to a church, a business, or a family. It’s simply telling the truth to each other, so it should be easy, right? But it turns out to be incredibly difficult. Give it too hard and people’s spirits are crushed. Dance on eggshells too softly and people won’t change. In this seminar, Redeemer elder and author Max Anderson explores how powerful feedback can be, why we fail to give it or hear it, and practical advice for developing a transformative culture of feedback.

Impact Investing - Bryce Butler & Neal Winterhof Social entrepreneurship is a popular topic these days but is it more than talk? Can you really invest in multiple bottom line companies? Bryce Butler and Neal Winterhof, both impact investors, will provide an overview of the space and discuss their experiences, covering topics such as definitions of impact, sourcing investments, measuring returns, case studies and how faith plays a role.

Successfully Managing Risks of Entrepreneurial Endeavors - Bryan Dolan Most leaders can define objectives and develop good estimates of resources and schedules. The problem arises, however, when the project goes off plan. The leader then goes in to reaction-mode and the rest of the endeavor is led by putting out one fire after another. Great leaders, then, plan for risk and anticipate the inevitable detours along the way. Anticipating risk and taking steps to prevent and/or mitigate those risks both increases the likelihood of success and reduces the cost and stress of problems that arise. This workshop offers techniques that help identify and manage project risks and help the entrepreneur apply appropriate risk management techniques.

AM WORKSHOPS Risk and Rewards of PR & Social Media - Kenny Jahng Do you feel the pressure to have a social media presence, but don’t know exactly how it will further your venture’s objectives? Are you a bit fuzzy about when your media campaigns are actually helping or hurting your cause? Strategic communications advisor Kenny Jahng will share concrete content marketing tactics that will help you to reap the rewards while avoiding the risks involved with publicity campaigns for your venture. This is relevant to all sectors.

Professional Gold Digging: Winning Sales and Fundraising Strategies - Catherine Rohr 46% of sales situations end without the salesperson ever asking for the order. 44% of salespeople/fundraisers quit trying after one ask, even though the average prospect needs to be approached five times to get to yes. Come to “Professional Gold Digging,” which will be packed with practical, high-impact sales and fundraising strategies that will equip you to power through the fear of rejection, turn a no into a yes, and stand out from the competition. Catherine will share sales secrets that she’s used to create success from scratch--ranging from negotiating venture capital transactions to raising millions for two startup nonprofits.

Failing to Love Your Neighbor: A Biblical Strategy for Avoiding Catastrophic Risks - Tim Weinhold Few Christians think that ‘love your neighbor’ has much relevance to their decisions as business owners or investors. That is a serious mistake — one that puts their businesses and their investments at grave risk. This workshop will provide a holistic biblical framework for steering one’s business and investing, away from risk and into blessing.

PM WORKSHOPS Surviving Your Start-Up’s First Year - Joshua Chambers (Earmark), Tracy Thorton (House on Beekman), Sean Coughlin (FaithStreet), and Steven Dziedzic (Hoppit) Well, you have done it! There is no turning back. Would you like to hear some lessons from Start-Ups? Do you really have to work 24/7? What can go right or wrong? Listen to first year Ei entrepreneurs as they have a candid discussion about their experiences. They will share their insights on the highs and lows, the expected and unexpected, and what they did to keep moving forward. This encouraging and sobering workshop is relevant for all aspiring entrepreneurs who are thinking of taking the leap.

Branding Design Requires Risk - Tina Chang & Esther Mun How do you use design to truly differentiate your brand? All too often, when it comes to design, entrepreneurs look for the lowest common denominator – the least offensive, most ubiquitous way to bring their company to life visually. As an entrepreneur you are no stranger to risk, so why aspire to be like everyone else? The best design is design that animates your personal imprint, your values, your character, and your soul. Design is risky business. Don’t design like a sheep. Approach design like the entrepreneur you are.

Investment Risk and the Integration of the Whole Heart - Spencer Collins, Andrew Huck, and Art Reimers Most people are either successful in their personal life or successful in their professional life but rarely both. The higher the trajectory in business (entrepreneurs, investors, executives) the harder the challenge to lead an integrated life free of dehumanizing compartmentalization and the greater risk of an implosion along the way. This workshop will identify key areas of risk and answer the question: how can I contribute to flourishing through both my personal and professional life without fragmenting them to the detriment of the other?

Ei Forum 2013

PM WORKSHOPS Essentials of Term Sheets - Robert Semmens Do you need to raise capital? What is the typical financing path for new ventures? What are the typical terms of the various financing alternatives? Bob Semmens will share the typical financing pathway for start-up companies and discuss the terms that early stage investors expect in providing capital including both Convertible Notes and Convertible Preferred Stock financings. This is relevant for for-profit entrepreneurs and other investors.

Developing “a Minimum Viable Culture”: From startup to Flourishing - Lisa Slayton What is the “minimum viable product or service” that we can get to market the fastest that can begin to generate revenue? In a startup, this is where the urgency lives in the first 6-12-18 months. But what is at RISK if attention is also not paid to culture and alignment? Considering 60% of Startups fail in the first 3 years, Venture Capitalists invest in teams over ideas, and startup decisions need to be made quickly and wisely to manage risk. Understanding the axis that creates organizational culture and alignment allows for intelligent risk taking and decision making. You will learn a simple tool to help you gain clarity and be able to articulate the core values that will drive your flywheel forward and create a healthy organization.

Board of Directors: Every Nonprofit Has One. Make Yours Exceptional - Karen Wu & Kimberly Reeve Building an exceptional board involves targeting, identifying, and recruiting ideal members to assist in the governance and execution of an organization’s mission. It also includes carefully defining roles, goals and expectations. Receive practical advice on how you can establish a board that works to fulfill your organization’s mission. Recommended for board members and executive directors of nonprofit organizations.

Because Blue Sky believes that each sector has a role, we make investments (loans and equity) in for-profit companies as well as grants and loans to nonprofit organizations. Regardless of the sector, we invest in organizations that have the potential to embody innovation, scale, and sustainability or help bring them about within their industry. Before joining Blue Sky, Bryce was the Executive Pastor of one the fastest growing churches in the country (Sojourn Community Church), and prior to that, served four years on active duty as an Armor Officer in the United States Army. NYC BUSINESS PLAN

COMPETITION The Business Plan Competition (BPC) attracts new and talented entrepreneurs equipping them in the early stages of their launch. Redeemer visited business plan competitions at a number of leading business schools to identify best practices before piloting our first competition in 2007.

The Business Plan Competition seeks to

1. Encourage the development of gospel-centered businesses, social/public services and art ventures.

2. Deepen a Christian theology of entrepreneurship.

3. Develop a movement of like-minded entrepreneurs and collaborative supporting networks.

Between 40 and 50 early stage entrepreneurs enter the NYC BPC each year. Winners receive a financial investment, typically in the form of grants paid out against specific milestones. They also receive visibility through the Ei Network and a chance to present at the Ei Forum. Partners in the Ei Network have become coaches and mentors and, sometimes, follow-on investors in our BPC finalists and winners.

2013 NYC Business Plan Competition Overview Our Business Plan Competition launched on September 22, 2012 with a kickoff event that gathered 130+. NYC-based participants ranging from prospective entrants to investors, coaches and judges. Our goal is to help each venture increase their chances of success and grow in their appreciation of the gospel.

Introduction to the Prayer of Examen The Daily Examen was a spiritual discipline developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola (14911556), founder of the Jesuit Order to help Christians become more self-aware and aware of Christ’s presence in the midst of daily life. In our hectic world today, it is easy to lose track of our own selves and lose sight of the risks that we are taking. This can easily create underlying anxieties and stress that diminish our abilities and our sense of what it means to be a Christian. We can also easily become increasingly unaware of the grace that surrounds us, causing us to depend more and more upon ourselves and less upon God. This adapted prayer will help us become more aware of the risks that we take each day, and to surrender them to Christ, exchanging our uncertainties for His peace. The following instructions are a modified version of the “Prayer of Examen” specially adapted for our theme of risk. The steps are designed to help you connect each day to possible risks taken; however, often there are deeper risks underlying these or surfacelevel risks. The gospel is able to powerfully address these root level risks so that we build our lives upon a solid foundation rather than sand, moving us from folly to faith. This devotional has two parts, taking a total of 30 minutes: 15 minutes for Scripture reading and 15 minutes for examination. We recommend going through this Prayer dai-

ly for a season of 3-5 weeks and suggest reading the book of Proverbs one chapter at a time. Write your thoughts and prayers in a journal so that you can begin to discern trends and areas of growth in this season.

OPENING PRAYER OF INVITATION: Becoming aware of God’s presence throughout the day. • Sit comfortably in stillness.

2

• Be reminded that our God brings structure out of the chaos of our days.

2 MIN

• Invite the Holy Spirit who searches our hearts to guide you through this prayer.

REVIEWING THE PAST DAY’S EVENT:

3 MIN

• Remembering that each day is a gift from the Lord, review your day and write down a basic chronology of what happened yesterday. • Does any particular event, meeting, conversation, or place stand out to you? In the rush of our days, it’s easy to overlook so much. Think about the things you ate, saw, smelled, and heard. Remember that God is in even these details. • Walk through each of these events in the presence of God.

IDENTIFY ONE POINT OF ANXIETY, FEAR, OR ANGER: Emotions associated with a risk taken. •

Emotions, like anxiety, fear, or anger are often associated with risks. These emotions are an important expression of the risks we are taking; however, we often do not adequately address these emotions and risks given the frantic pace of our lives. When we allow these risk-related anxieties, fears, or anger to continue they can gain strength and begin to compromise our sense of identity, value and mission.

Reflect on the day’s events and identify those circumstances that created even a twinge of anxiety, fear, or anger within you.

After selecting the circumstance, identify a surface-level risk associated with that moment.

IDENTIFY THE RISK UNDERNEATH THE RISK: 4 MIN •

As you consider this point of anxiety, fear or anger, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to understand the underlying risk that this situation has surfaced. What is it that you really want that you’re not getting?

Deeper risks are usually related to issues of comfort, control, security, success, and approval. Try to identify how this situation may be related to one of these areas.

How does the gospel free you from this anxiety, fear or anger? How does the person and work of Christ liberate you from grounding these desires in external things? How can you root your deeper desires in Christ to diminish the sense of loss and risk?
