Background -

Delivering tool that can be found nearly in every street

-

Lack of Ergonomic consideration

-

Majority users are elderly and low income family

-

Affect the user behaviour and posture

Aim /Ergonomic /Low cost /Improve refer to user behaviour /Modifiable by the user

Target User Elderly Scavenger

The strength of certain parts of elderly affects their ability of controlling the trolley.

Compared to when they were 20.

Hand strength reduce

~16-40%

Arm strength reduce

~50% Leg strength reduce *Data is collected in US in 2002 It is a referable data as there is no data from HK

discovery from interviews RECYCLE STATIONs

per 1kg PAPER

per 1kg METAL

collectors usually get at least 10 dollars stuffs to sell everyday ( which means average paper weight: $10 / 6cents(paper) = 16.7kg per DAY )

discovery from interviews TARGET USERs * walk down the slope is much more easier than go up the slope. but they need to chase and run after the trolley when they go down the slope >causing leg muscle and knee pain >risk of accident * not prefer to buy trolley larger than M size (do not want to be the obstruction of street) * Must wave the net for the handle because stuffs will fall out through handle when going up slope * strangers steal the trolley if user does not lock the trolley * user rarely keep their trolley at home but just lock at street

collecting route

* at least 10kg per day. cannot load more than 10kg at once ( bulky ) * need to go at least 2~3km per day to searching for the cardboard * the wheel fall out sometimes beacause of the weight * the pay of paper collection is keep getting cheaper year by year * losing collected cardboard from strangers stealing is un-avoidable when user need to go toilet

1.5km

1.7km

summary of OBSERVATION -

the paper boards are too large and block the handle of trolley Vision is blocked by the paper boards the trolley are not stable when it is overload difficult to push or pull on the slope rusty handle and base will easily hurt their hands or legs have to bend their bodies to put on/off things from the trolley it’s quite heavy for an elderly to carry the folded trolley have to fix the paper boards through a complex way (with ropes) some handles are too high for the elderly to control Dangerous when using the car road

Observation and Usage cycle LOAD

-bend body -fix with rope UNFOLD

TRANSPORT

-paper too large -stability -slope -rusty handle -stair -handle position

-too heavy to carry

FOLD

UNLOAD

-bend body -untie rope

Design / Improve Opportunity

Net Wave the net for the Handle Funcation : avoid the stuff to fall out

Handle Adjust the height and angle of the Handle Improve the handle part / add the pad.

Base Add a holding part when the trolley is folded

Brake

adjustable handle (Angle & height)

holes (fixing the ropes)
