Editor's Note

March is here again and I find it so hard to believe that we are already into our third month of 2012! The luck of the Irish, hey? A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? I think we all wish at times that we could be “lucky”, and always find that desired good fortune at the end of every road we travel. However, in my experience with life is that sometimes the pot of gold is found at the end of the desert, after a huge drought, or in the middle of a rainstorm, so to speak. The hard times make us strong, right? We don’t like to hear that. However, it’s in the middle of the refiner’s fire that the pure gold comes forth, not in following the pretty rainbow of pretty colors.

Reach out and I will bet you did not know that on March 7, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received the patent for his telephone. Soon to follow, as the story goes, Alexander Graham Bell uttered those famous first words ever heard on a telephone, “Come here Mr. Watson, I want to see you.” I did not know that, but fortunately, with the great invention of the world wide web, it was available at the tip of my fingers with a simple push of a button.

Communication, as with any industry, business, co worker, etc. is very important. It is how we transact business, educate, avoid running into each other while driving, and in my case all too many times, order french fries at the McDonald’s drive through. It is what makes a civilization function. It has been said that the family is like a small civilization. In fact, Pat Conroy made this statement- “Divorce is the destruction of a small civilization.” What an interesting perspective on the family.

Communication within the family is extremely important because it enables members to express their needs, wants, and concerns to each other. Open and honest communication creates an atmosphere that allows family members to express their differences as well as love and admiration for one another. It is through communication that family members are able to resolve the unavoidable problems that arise in all families. Effective communication is almost always found in strong, healthy families and poor communication is usually found in unhealthy family relationships. Marriage and family therapists often report that poor communication is a common complaint of families who are having difficulties. Poor communication is unclear and indirect. It can lead to numerous family problems, including excessive family conflict, ineffective problem solving, lack of intimacy, and weak emotional bonding.

someone

Let’s look to some famous companies throughout our country’s history to help us communicate better within our little family civilizations: AT&T- Reach out and touch someone I always make it a point to not only show affection to my kids by telling them I love them or that they have done a good job at something. I like to give them high five or the pat on the back. I always make it a point to hug each one of my kids separately before I leave in the house in the morning, when they are up before I leave. This is an excellent way to communicate your affection and love to them by showing that they are each important to you.

It is how we transact business, educate, avoid running into each other while driving, and in my case all too many times, order french fries at the McDonald’s drive through. ”

Family communication refers to the way verbal and nonverbal information is exchanged between family members. Communication involves the ability to pay attention to what others are thinking and feeling. In other words, an important part of communication is not just talking, but listening to what others have to say. Two ears and one mouth- I can’t help but wonder if somehow that means we should listen twice as much as we talk.

Servant Leadership in Action A legend tells of a monastery

Crystal Dyer International Speaker, Author, Entrepreneur, Military Spouse & Veteran, and Mommy of (soon-to-be) three! Translation: A BUSY MOM! www.crystaldyer.com

Leadership is based on example, not command. ”

known throughout Europe for the extraordinary leadership of a man known only as Brother Peter. Several monks began a lengthy pilgrimage to visit Brother Peter to learn from him. Almost immediately, they began to bicker about who should do various chores. On the third day they met another monk going to the monastery, and he joined them. This monk never complained or shirked a duty, and whenever the others would fight over a chore he would gracefully volunteer and do it himself. By the time the group of four men had reached the monastery, the others were following his example and working together smoothly. When they reached the monastery and asked to see Brother Peter, the man who greeted them laughed out loud. ‘But our brother is among you!’ And he pointed to the fellow who had joined them.

Busy Mom’s Perspective “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” -John C. Maxwell

Amazingly, this rule is applicable in every type of relationship. For instance, if I want my husband to eat healthy meals I can either berate his love of fast food or I can prepare a home cooked meal that removes the necessity for him to swing through a drive through. Similarly, if I want my children to speak kindly to one another it behooves me to speak kindly to them. Children are more than just parrots. They are the world’s best mimics. This month I challenge you to give servant leadership a try- instead of management from behind a desk and/ or ruling the roost, get out and spend time along side those you seek to influence- adults and children alike. If you roll up your sleeves when the time comes, you’ll have the pleasure of watching those around you begin to do the very same. Warmly, Crystal

“Blessed is the leader who seeks the best for those he serves.” -Unknown Today many people seek leadership positions- not because of what they can do for others but for what the position can do for them: status, connections, perks, advantages. They do service as an investment- a way to build an impressive resume. The parable above teaches another model of leadership- one where leaders are preoccupied with serving rather than being followed, with giving rather than getting, with doing rather than demanding.

Leadership is based on example, not command. It will be the person, not the position, who will make a positive impact on others.

Water birth — Is It For You? Water birth has gotten a lot of

press lately. Almost everyone has heard of water birth, but there is a lot of conflicting information in articles and on the internet. So today I will discuss water birth, focusing on safety issues and benefits to mothers and babies during birth. Water birth is safe. The most frequent question I am asked is why the baby doesn’t drown at birth. The newborn is not stimulated to breathe until exposed to room air, gravity, and noise in the birth room. They also have a “diving reflex” that prevents them from breathing underwater. The newborn also continues to receive oxygen through the umbilical cord for a few minutes after the birth. Many studies have confirmed that the risk of infection to mother or baby is no higher than traditional births. The same fluids and substances present at traditional births are present at water births, but during a water birth, the fluids are diluted by a large amount of water. Conditions that would make a woman a poor candidate for water birth are rare, and include prolonged rupture of membranes without labor, active infection, abnormal fetal heart rate, or conditions which make resuscitation of the baby more likely. These issues may still be present in non-water births, but they are easier to deal with out of the water Water birth has many benefits for the baby. Being born is probably not painful for a baby, but it is “stressful”. Many environmental conditions and physical processes that have defined the baby’s life up until this point change suddenly. Water birth is a gentle transition for babies, because

their bodies are supported by the warm water as they are born. As a result, many babies born in water do not cry immediately following the birth, they simply begin to breathe calmly. The baby also receives better oxygenation throughout the birth process, due to increased oxygenation, which is achieved because the uterus works more efficiently in the water. There are even more benefits of water birth for the mother. First, birthing in water is relaxing for most women, and lowers maternal blood pressure. This allows the normal pain relieving hormones released in labor to be at a very high level. Most women sigh with relief as they enter the pool, and are very reluctant to get out again! The pain relief offered by water birth is often rated as high as epidural anesthesia by women who have had both. Water allows the tissues involved in birth to stretch, instead of tear, with the birth of the baby’s head. Finally, births in water are shorter than traditional births. This is probably due to maternal relaxation, more oxygen available to the uterus, high levels of the hormones that regulate labor, and freedom of movement in the birth pool. In conclusion, water birth is a simple way to have a safer, faster and comfortable birth. It is my hope that the information given here will help women on their way to a wonderful birth. Jennifer Bennett is a Licensed Midwife who attends many water births at Avanlee Birth and Maternity Center in Killeen, TX. She can be reached a info@avanlee.com.

Hometown Heroes by Miranda N. Bradley

Planting Seeds of Hope: Rebecca Pearce with

Hope Givers United

As a freelance proofreader, Rebecca Pearce was always drawn to the plight of oppressed women. Over the years, she became more and more aware of her fierce desire to help women find truth and justice within their own lives. That understanding, coupled with a need to advocate for women’s issues, spurred her to start her own nonprofit, Hope Givers United. “It took me about ten years before I was able to really get involved with women’s issues the way I thought would really make an impact,” she said. But finally she was able to connect with World Vision Micro, which supplies micro loans to small women-owned businesses across the globe. Besides contributing individually to the larger cause, Rebecca decided she wanted to do even more to help. So, she started her own giving group through World Vision Micro. Thanks to a group of dedicated friends, Rebecca was able to raise more than $10,000 during that first independent fundraising effort. It was the spark that ignited a flame.

bc 16

“I went ahead and formed an advisory board to explore other giving opportunities within the United States,” Rebecca said. “That’s how our group began to branch out. We changed our name to Hope Givers United.” Hope Givers United launched its first fundraiser in May 2011 with the Christian Appalachia Project. Within a month, the organization raised $575 to aid the Project with providing physical, spiritual and emotional support through a variety of programs. Following that, they raised enough money to purchase sewing machines for young female war refugees in Uganda so they could launch their own tailoring businesses. The dedicated Hope Givers United members raised more than $2,500 for the project, Village of Hope – Uganda. These days the group is focusing on a new partnership with the U.S.- based Faces of Slavery Inc. organization, which rescues girls from sex trafficking within the United States and restore them to a normal life. While dollars are important, Rebecca also feels called to provide more hands-on assistance with the projects. In the near future, she sees the program, which currently has 30 members, to grow in size and scope. “There are a lot of us who are interested in becoming involved in advocacy,” Rebecca said. “I see us branching out in all kinds of areas from logistics to advocacy to volunteerism and beyond.”

One thing that Rebecca is quick to note is that, while Hope Givers United is a nonprofit organization, it is not filed as a 501(c)3. “That’s because not one single dollar raised goes to any of us,” she said. “We have no operating expenses, and we are all volunteer-based. We want all the money to go to those who need it.” Hope Givers United is more than just nonprofit, it’s practically sacrificial. When it came time to raise funds for one particular project, the ladies paid for the printing cost to create journals. Each item’s cost came out of the volunteers’ pockets and was not reimbursed. “We like it that way,” Rebecca confirmed. “This is our way of giving back. We don’t need anything in return.” But they do get something back, even if it’s just the satisfaction of knowing they are fulfilling a calling. “I want to make a difference in this world,” Rebecca said. “And I know that through Hope Givers United, I am.” If you would like to learn more about Hope Givers United or would like to become involved, contact them through their website at www.hopegiversunited.org.

Q &A : Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, We’ll be completely out of debt in September and looking to buy a home in the next year or two. We’re thinking of buying a repo home. Do you have any suggestions on where to find these? - Levi Dear Levi,

This is the surprising face of hunger.

One way is to buy the home from the owners before the sale happens. It’s better for them because they realize some money and it stops the foreclosure. It’s better for you, too, because you won’t find yourself in a bidding war later on the courthouse steps!

The hungry in Central Texas today may surprise you. They are our friends and neighbors, recently laid-off adults, the elderly couple on the next block living on a fixed income. And, of the 48,000 clients we serve every week, more than 1 in 3 are children. Hunger is unacceptable, especially in our own backyard. We can end hunger, but we can’t do it alone.

You can also find listing in your local newspaper under the legal notices section, and if you live in a metropolitan area it’s not hard to find a legal newspaper that lists incorporations, real estate transactions and foreclosures.

You can help.

— Dave Dear Dave, I’ve never heard you discuss at what point it’s advisable to let someone else make and manage your investments. Also, is there a point at which it’s good to go with a fee-only financial planner? - Anonymous Well Hello Again Anonymous, Don’t just turn everything over to someone else and let them manage it all or make all the decisions for you. You made the money, so you should take care of your own stuff. People looking for this kind of help have a greater net worth than the bozos dishing out advice and wanting to “handle” it all. Investing, personal finance, or saving, is not rocket science. You need to be in control of your money. Now, can you have counselors in your life? You bet! Everyone needs the benefit of people around them who have wisdom and experience. You might end up like an old, washed up boxer – no money and no teeth! — Dave

common knowledge to store medications and vitamins out of the reach of children, each year one of every 150 two-year-olds ends up in an emergency room for an unintentional medication overdose, most often after getting into medicine while their parents or caregivers were not looking, according to Dan Budnitz, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s Medication Safety Program. Annually, more than 60,000 children age 5 or younger are treated in emergency rooms for accidental ingestion of household medicines. “Parents may not be aware of the danger posed by leaving medications where young children can reach or see them,” said Budnitz. “A few simple steps - followed every time - can protect our children.”

In partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) PROTECT Initiative, CDC and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) Educational Foundation created the Up and Away and Out of Sight educational program to help parents understand how to best store and safeguard the medicines they use at home so young children can’t access them. Returning medicines to a safe storage location every time they are used can help prevent the accidental ingestions that drive many avoidable emergency room visits by young children each year.

“Children are curious and can quickly get into medicines or vitamins when parents and caregivers aren’t looking. Our goal with Up and Away and Out of Sight is to emphasize to parents the importance of making sure medicines are safely stored in the home in ‘up-and-away’ places, rather than on bedside tables that kids can easily reach or in purses that kids love to rummage through,” says Emily Skor, vice president of Communications and Alliance Development at CHPA. Families should practice safe medicine storage year round. Whether it’s during the winter when cough and cold season is at its peak, or in the spring and fall when many of us rely on allergy medications to treat our symptoms, always remember to remove vitamins and medicines from any areas that children could possibly reach; instead, put them up and away and out of sight every time they are used. Use these tips and resources to make sure your child is always protected: • Never leave medicine or vitamins out on a kitchen counter or at a sick child’s bedside, even if you have to give the medicine again in a few hours. • Always relock the safety cap on a medicine bottle. If it has a locking cap that turns, twist it until you hear the click.

• Never tell children medicine is candy so they’ll take it, even if your child does not like to take his or her medicine. • Remind babysitters, houseguests, and visitors to keep purses, bags, or coats that have medicines in them up and away and out of sight when they are in your home. • Program the poison control center number (1800-222-1222) into your home and cell phones so you will have it when you need it. For more information on Up and Away and Out of Sight, safety tips, and resources, visit www.UpandAway.org and pledge to keep medicines and vitamins up and away and out of sight in your home.

Teens Today

Mom Serves Detention It was the first week of his

Marcy Lytle www.marcylytle.com

freshman year, and my son got stopped in the hall for wearing a shirt one-half inch too long and was slapped with a Saturday morning, four-hour detention. But let me back up… Having already had a teenager in high school, and knowing my kids and the way they dress, I didn’t bother reading the new clothing rules which were sent out to parents about a week before school started (too late to undo all the clothes shopping already done!). Apparently, one of the new rules was no shirts longer than your fingertips, along with nothing obscene written on the shirts, etc. My son was wearing a polo shirt, nice khaki shorts, and looked awesome….but his shirt was just a wee bit too long. We found out later that a particular teacher was just trying to do her best to intimidate every new kid…and she succeeded!

So why did I, the mom, serve the detention? That’s what this article is all about – covering and standing up for your child – when the time is right. I went in to visit with the principal the same day the detention was served, took my son with me so the principal could see his outfit, and sat there to hear that he wouldn’t make any exceptions – rules were rules.

bc supporting clean water projects because everyone derserves access to clean water

20

As I thought over what to do, I observed my son’s face – one of embarrassment and shame – and one of disappointment that his first week of high school was now tarnished by a detention, where he would have to sit with unknown kids, among those with much worse offenses, on a Saturday morning of all days. I’m all for discipline when discipline is warranted, but I somehow felt responsible for this action – since I didn’t read the new rules and I bought the new clothes he was wearing. So I asked of the principal, “Can I serve the detention, since I’m really the one at fault here?” He

Now here’s my point. Even though your kids are now teenagers, and they no longer need daycare, swaddling, or help getting dressed in the morning, they need you. They need you to be aware of their mood changes, they need you to ask how their day was, and most of all they need you to listen. And when you’ve listened and heard their heart, they need you to be their parent and go to bat for them when the ball is hit in their face, and they still feel the sting or wear the bruise. Teenagers ask questions about why they can’t do certain things. Take time to explain it to them. And if you don’t have a good reason, perhaps think through why in the heck you made the rule. Teenagers are trying to be adults, but sometimes they revert back to acting like a toddler. Expect this. Encourage them when they make wise decisions. Be patient and pick them up, when they fall down or fail. Teenagers are nervous in this big world and sometimes others are just downright mean to them. Observe your teen with her peers, get to know these friends, and talk to your teen at night. Be the last voice she hears, one of love and acceptance, before she hits the pillow at night. Teenagers need boundaries. However, as your teen grows, shows responsibility, and makes great choices, let him go…little by little. But be there to rein him in, if he starts to veer off course. Teenagers need hugs. They will shrug you away (especially if you hug them in public), but as they walk away, a smile will emerge on their otherwise sullen face, knowing they are loved. I often hear parents say, “I dread the teen years.” Why? Embrace them, look forward to them, engage in higher level conversations with your soon-to-be adults, and most of all…stand up for them and take the hit, when the ball comes at them way too fast…
