“like it or not, this topic effects us in all aspects of life”.

There are so many professionals who have avoided this subject for fear of embarrassment. As an adult, you want factual information and a degree of logic with this topic. In response to this, we have put together a very detailed lesson plan which will make a difference in the way that you relate to this topic. I sound like a broken record when I say that “practice” is essential but it is the only way to conquer this challenge. This course of classes will also look at some of the topics that this subject is related to such as dates, appointment scheduling, money and much more.

We wanted to add realistic scenarios to this class so that you are able to apply what you have learnt and to check understanding, so there will be role play tasks featured throughout this course. These tasks will be set in various scenarios such as paying for a meal, taking a phone call from a client to name a few. Our aim is to create a very relaxed learning environment where you won’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. This system of learning is effective for producing results. We hope that you enjoy this module and look forward to your comments on our website; www.one2oneacademy.com.

Audio support is provided using the latest software so that you can practice your pronunciation outside of a classroom environment. 3

Money An essential topic The first way to tackle this subject is to look at the way in which we separate numbers into units.

10

Ten

20

Twenty

30

Thirty

For the purpose of this task we will first look at the following;

40

Forty

1,000,000

One million

50

Fifty

1,000

One thousand

60

Sixty

100

One hundred

70

Seventy

10

Ten

80

Eighty

1

One

90

Ninety

100

Hundred

Money is separated by the use of a decimal point. This point in English is represented by the word “and”. So for example if we have a number 10.56 we would translate this to the following: 10 Pounds and fifty six pence. For the purpose of this task we have used Pounds as a currency but the same principles apply in every currency. If we repeat this task in another currency such as Euros then this would be; 10 Euros and fifty six Cents. At this point its important to demonstrate the pronunciation of units these are shown here:

We will now record this section to help you to practice outside the class room environment. These numbers share one thing in common the sound of the “ty” is likened to “tee”. So the pronunciation of individual numbers it’s important to practice. Take a look at the diagram this may help with your understanding of this concept.

Four hundred And fifty six

456.70 Cents And Seventy So in words this would be four hundred and fifty-six Euros and seventy Cents. ( Euro Currency) This principle can now be applied, We will practice now using the following examples on the next page.

8

How much does it cost? How much is the bill? What is the Quote? How much is the fare? How much is it worth?

Take a look at the cost of the follow- We are now going to move on to a ing items and prices. Your teacher word that is very important “Sale”. will now ask you some questions about them. In English we have a few words that mean the same thing: Hamburger 3.45 Reduced/Sale/ Discount/ Money off Taxi fare 14.82 and %. For example if there is a Jacket that costs 100 Euros and it is adverGrocery bill 110.92 tised as “-10% Off” then this means that the jacket will now cost 90.00 EuBook 11.25 ros. This could also mean that the Jacket has been reduced to 90.00 Pen 7.99 Euros or discounted to a new price of 90 Euros. Ipad 599.00 We are now going to do some Role Mp3 player 80.00 Play tasks to help with what you have been shown to this point. Meal 67.34

Role Play 1 You are going to phone a friend and tell them about your morning. You had the morning off work and decided to take a Taxi which cost 15.00 ( currency) to the local Shopping Mall. This task will require you to improvise. At the Mall you bought the following: Shoes

67.00

Jacket

110.95

Wallet

50.00

Belt

19.80

Watch

125.99

Tell your friend about the cost of these items, you will be asked questions.

9

Larger Numbers There is a significance in identifying with the comma used to separate a thousand from other numbers. We use this in English almost as if it is used grammatically, more like a pause in speech. Let us look at the following example:

1,345.70 Euros

Task Put the following numbers into words you must apply a currency of your choice, your teacher will assist you with pronunciation:

1. 2,456,768.90 2. 5,761,391.90 3. 8,119,263.42

4. 22,121,272.56 Here we would say; One thousand (PAUSE) three hundred and 45 Euros and 5. 119,450,698.43 seventy Cents. This is true of all larger numbers. Let us now look at a much 6. 1,981.45 larger number to demonstrate this:

1,578,690.17 Euros

7. 9,742.79

Here, this would be shown as one million 8. 109.00 (PAUSE) five hundred and seventy eight thousand (PAUSE) six hundred and ninety 9. 56.35 Euros and seventeen Cents.

There is no other way to master this other than practice so in the following task you will be required to translate figures into words.

Pronunciation of numbers which end with “teen” and “tee” are significant here as these sounds help to define these numbers, practice with following sequence with your teacher: 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 This principle is applied to the entire numerical system and is essential to master. 10

Dates This topic is related so to begin with we will look at the pronunciation of months, seasons and days of the week. Monday / Tuesday/ Wednesday/ Thursday/ Friday/ Saturday/ Sunday. January/ February/ March/ April/ May/ June/ July/ August/ September/ October/ November/ December Spring/ Summer/ Autumn/ Winter Please count from 1 to 31 You will also need to practice the following 1st

First

2nd

You need to become familiar with the concept of dates as they feature both in working and personal life.To master this topic you will need to become familiar with the way in which we translate dates into a sentence. The following task is to provide you with the necessary practice an example of this is shown here:

The fifth Of February

05.02.2013 Two thousand and thirteen or twenty thirteen

on the following page you will be required to translate the dates shown into sentences.

His wife Maria started her job as a Dental assistant ____ 02.08.2003. She is planning a night out with her friends ____03.06.2013 to celebrate her birthday.

02. I started my job _____________ 03. Today’s date is ____________ 04. I am going on holiday _______ Note that the preposition for time is “on” when we apply it to a day of the week. When we refer to a week or a day we must be specific. We can refer to this by using this week, next week, this Monday or next Monday for example.

Their son Jake was born ____ 08.04.1999 and he is moving to Germany ____09.07.2016.

12

Time Another closely related subject is the way that we relate numbers to time. It’s a relatively easier subject as it has a definitive structure.

12.45 can be referred to as twelve forty five or a quarter to one. Both are correct.

At this point it is important to note the prepositions used to separate the parts of a day and these are as follow: In the morning

On the hour is the numerical value so it’s important to master the pronunciation of the sequence 1-12.

In the afternoon

The clock face is divided by every 15 minutes. So we have 15 minutes past an hour, 30 minutes, 45 minutes etc, We can refer to this in two ways for example:

At night

In the evening

f.

4:15 pm

The 24 hour clock is applied with the preposition “in”. This way we can refer to the particular part of the day. The preposition for time is “at”. The following page will require you to fill in the missing prepositions and translate the time into the correct time frame.

London is so expensive, just to get a coffee can cost you as much as 3.75 (pounds) which is too much. In comparison a coffee in Europe only costs 1.20 (euros). Listening skills There are two components to a conversation, the ability to listen and the ability to speak.

Voice Tones These can effect the meaning of your words and should be considered as important as your grammar structures.

23

Dawn refers to sunrise and if you are lucky enough to see it would require a greeting. This would be Good morning. Early morning is usually between 5 and 9 am and would require the same greeting. A business morning is between 9 am and midday (12pm). As it is still the morning it would require the same greeting. During this time there is a term know as “Brunch which refers to a very late morning meal. Noon is referred to as midday and this is 12pm. From this point we refer to the greeting as good afternoon. From 12 to 5pm is the afternoon. We can refer to two parts of this time frame; early afternoon and late afternoon. The greeting for this part of the day is; good afternoon. The evening starts at 5pm and finishes at 8pm (depends on where you are) and the greeting here is; good evening. You can refer to this in two parts early evening and late evening. Dinner time is around 7pm but this can vary. Traditionally night time is after 9pm and we only apply the greeting goodnight. Traditionally working hours in the United Kingdom is between 9am and 5pm with lunch hours ranging between 1 and 3pm. Working hours vary and depend on the organisation.

Greetings Voice tones used in the English language reflect “empathetic values”. Useful phrases for casual greetings in English: • Hello • Hi • Good morning • Good afternoon • Good evening

Practice these greetings with your teacher to ensure that they sound genuine in terms of empathetic value. Voice tones are very important here as the wrong tone can make you sound arrogant or rude. These greetings are valuable in both informal and formal context so if practiced can display the way that you feel and add value to your sound. These greetings do not change when using a phone, it’s important that you realise the importance as a phone prevents supported features like facial expressions, body posture, eye contact and gestures. These traits must be reflected by your voice on the phone, a great asset to your professional life.

Feedback We hope that you enjoyed this module and that you will find the time to leave a comment on our Website. Ensure that you listen to your voice recordings, learning more about your voice and the way you sound can speed up the learning process. You can also use these recordings as a point of reference and revisit some of the topics at a later date. Skills Remember that learning English is about balancing your skills between; reading, writing, listening and speaking. You must try to find some harmony between these different skill bases. Confidence will come with time, usually when you are placed in a position where you have to use the language. Try and relate this language to your mother tongue especially with routines, and things that the two languages share in common. This will help with comprehension and speed up the learning process. Finally place importance on the target sounds that you need to achieve, regard this topic with the same importance that you place on grammar.
