REAL estate agents will be hoping that July 1 changes to Victorian stamp duty for first-home buyers lure them back to the market, following revealing figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Nearly 60,000 fewer first-home buyers around Australia entered the mortgage market in the 12 months to May 2011, compared with the 12 months to May 2010. It has prompted a call

from financial comparison website RateCity to make saving for a home more attractive, with only one in three prospective firsthome buyers taking advantage of special tax and interest concessions on savings accounts.

NEW VILLAGE SQUARE

THE former Austral Bricks site in Wantirna South, being developed by Mirvac, is starting to take shape, with the first buyers settling on their land. The $430 million Harcrest development is being transformed

into a 56ha community featuring 840 contemporary homes. Demand has been strong, with 80 per cent of Village Square Precinct sold and more than 9000 people registering on the company’s database. Construction of Harcrest Boulevard is almost complete, while the temporary Harcrest sales office is also scheduled to open onsite next month. ‘‘In the well-established City of Knox, a master-planned community of this scale is a rarity,’’ Mirvac Victoria chief executive John Carfi said.
