The Hawaiian Garden City Council approved a request from the Hawaiian Gardens Community Development Agency for a loan from the city’s reserves to pay for a settlement with Luxurious Properties/Essapour . The Agency is currently in litigation involving property located at the corner of Norwalk Boulevard and 226th Street, The Agency transferred the property to Farzard Essapour and Luxurious Properties, LLC. on condition the property was to be developed into a fuel service station with car wash and convenience store. However, a dispute arose during the development process resulting in a possible monetary settlement of the litigation that would include transfer of the property back to the Agency. However, the agency does not have the funds to conclude a settlement. Rodriguez asked how much money the city had in its reserves. Finance Director David Sung said the city had three reserve funds. These include the Sports Complex which has $5,450,000, RainyDay fund which has $1.3 million, and Special Projects funds which has $5.5 million. He said staff recommends the money come from the Sports Complex reserve. The proposed settlement agreement calls for $1,212,250 loan to be repaid with a five percent interest rate. The Council on Aug. 10 directed city staff to clean up property located at 22434-22446 Norwalk Boulevard, that had an unlawful accumulation of trash,

Rep. Ed Royce guest speaker at Barrows Fundraiser

Enjoying the Fundraising Banquet hosted by Former Cerritos Mayor Grace Hu and Economic Development Chair Lily Kuo for the re-election of Cerritos City Council Candidate Bruce Barrows at the Prince Seafood Restaurant Oct. 23 were (l-r) Hu, Bruce Barrows, Kuo and Congressman Ed Royce and wife Marie Royce. Congressman Ed Royce was the special guest at the Fundraising Banquet at the Prince Seafood Restaurant in Cerritos Oct. 23 hosted by former Cerritos Mayor Grace Hu for the re-election of Bruce Barrows to the Cerritos City Council. “We appreciate all that you have done for the community,” said Royce. “You have always been willing to work closely with Washington and Sacramento whenever it would benefit the City of Cerritos and its residents and businesses. Thank you for all you do.” Bruce was first elected to the Council in 1994 for two terms and re-elected in

2007. “Today the state suffers from a $12 billion debt and is out of whack,” said Barrows. “Cerritos has suffered a loss of revenues, too, but we’re hoping that the new Apple Store, Forever 21 and the new Nordstrom store will bring in some needed money. Whoever is elected next year to the City Council needs to place more emphasis on how we are to run the City.” Hu thanked the 150 guests who attended the banquet and introduced local dignitaries who enjoyed a delicious dinner while listening to live entertainment by Alan Wang and friends.

OPINION/LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Publishers' Rant

Vote backward, vote Tea Party These people are running for office... TP candidate Nevada Governor Sharon Angle - divorce and Social Security are nation’s “Wicked Ways”; she will also deny abortion to a teenager raped by her father. TP candidate Delaware Congressman Glen Erkhart-“there is no problem that abortion can’t make worse, I have good friends who are the product of rape.” TP candidate Ohio 9th Rich Ayett ran around in a Nazi uniform celebrating their military tactics. TP candidate New Jersey 3rd John Runion defended corporate tax loopholes. TP candidate West Virginia Senate John Racea, “I made my money the old fashion way, I inherited it”. He also wants minimum wage and Social Security abolished. TP candidate Indian 9th Todd Young

says Social Security is a ponzi scheme. TP candidate Wisconsin 8th Reid Dribble says social security is in fact a ponzi scheme. TP candidate Arizona 8th Jesse Kelley wants to privatize Social Security so government can force you to spend part of your paycheck on Wall Street commissions. TP candidate Alaska Senator Joe Miller says unemployment insurance is unconstitutional, when his own wife received UI; he called Medicaid unconstitutional, while his family received funds from Medicaid, and he called Social Security unconstitutional. (He is now in third place as of the date of this publication.) TP candidate Colorado Senate Ken Buck would not stop at Social Security but privatize the VA. TP candidate Pennsylvania 4th Keith Rothless promised to overturn any Supreme Court decision to which he disagrees, if the Supreme Court rules it right, “we will just take away the funding for it”. Back in Nevada, TP candidate Angle decries healthcare reform and also healthcare itself. “Everything is now

covered under autism”. TP candidate California 11th David Harmer advocates eliminating public schools altogether and go back to the 1880’s model-no girls, blacks or the slightest chance you could go to college. TP candidate Virginia 11th Keith Vinnion is “not so sure we need a federal bureaucracy for education”. TP candidate Florida 2nd Steve Sutherland wants to de-fund the Dept. of Education because “we can’t afford it”. TP candidate Texas 17th Bill Flores get rid of the “pornographic Dept. of Arts, Dept. of Energy, and the Dept. of Education”. TP candidate Arizona 5th David Shwikert wants to eliminate the Dept. of Education because “it is unconstitutional”. TP candidate Joe Miller wants to change the Constitution and repeal 17th amendment. Senate Mike Lee called the 17th amendment a mistake. The 17th amendment permits the direct election by the voters of U.S. Senators. So vote for me now and I will repeal the amendment after I am elected. Ms. Angle wants to repeal the 16th amendment, which provides for the federal income tax, no explanation on how we will pay for keeping out the Mexicans she specifically attacks in her commercials. TP candidate Rand Paul of Kentucky wants to repeal the 14th amendment because it “interferes with a business’ right to ban black people from its’ premises”. TP candidate Delaware Senate Christine O’Donnell believes she has been cleared to read secret documents from China because she worked for a nonprofit organization, and believes China is plotting to take over the U.S.

TP candidate Illinois Senator Mark Kirk held a fundraiser in China for U.S. businesses then voted not to close the outsourcing loophole. TP candidate Florida 22nd Alan West had to leave the military after threatening an Iraqi, now he claims to have a higher security clearance than the President. TP candidate Michigan 7th Tim Walhberg wants to blackmail the President into showing his birth certificate to Rush Limbaugh. He will do this by threatening to impeach him. You are willing to let these people run this country? This is the America you want and are willing to permit? If we sit around and not vote next Tuesday we have no one to blame but ourselves. Not them. If we do not vote next Tuesday we will have enabled these people to run the country. To not find the time and the means to convince one other sane voter to put aside the “disappointment” of the last two years and look to the future and vote would be criminal, because the “disappointment” of the last two years will be the good ol’ days compared to a Tea Party America. Knabe statement on the passing of Senator Jenny Oropeza Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe issued the following statement regarding the passing of Jenny Oropeza, 28th District State Senator from Long Beach. “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend, Senator Jenny Oropeza, one of the most generous and well respected members of the State Senate. I had the honor of working with Senator Oropeza at every level of elected office she held and saw firsthand her dedication to public service. Jenny always had a steadfast passion for the wellbeing and quality of life for those she represented. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. Meeting September 23 to 26. Clubwomen came from all over the state to participate. This is the fifth year the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) in Washington, DC has supported the Domestic Violence Awareness program as one of their main projects and asked all the clubs throughout the nation to support this worthy cause. National President Jackie Pierce started the program and President Rose Ditto followed thru during her administration. It was well received when newly elected National President Carlene Gardner announced she would also adopt the program. The GFWC is working hard to get legislation passed to help the abused and to strengthen the laws against the abusers. It is well documented that not only women are abused by their mates but a large number of husbands as well. The GFWC and CFWC is seeking harsher sentencing for all abusers both men and women. That is equal justice. The highlight of the Board Meeting was when the Director of the Riley

Soon after leaving the Center she began donating hours after work to helping these women who had suffered so much. Before long the Center, recognizing Maria’s dedication, hired her and she eventually worked her way up to the position of director. Today, Maria is divorced from her abusive husband and works hard at being a single mother. She is not only the Center’s director but a spokesperson for the Riley Center and her sons, now seventeen, are eagerly looking forward to heading off to college. Maria is a strong, likeable, and well-spoken representative for all women. She is a shinning example of what an abused woman can overcome. Thanks go to Domestic Violence Awareness State Chairman for arranging this program for the meeting. State President Kathy McGraw is in full support of the program.

John Williams, Guitar at Cerritos Center By Glen Creason In a flawless and unforgettable ninety minutes the great guitarist John Williams took the Performing Arts Center on a journey to some unexplored musical lands along with the occasional familiar gemlike composition in a concert as close to perfect as you might find. The rather rare opportunity to hear classical guitar is a joy, especially at the acoustically generous Cerritos hall which Williams seemed to embrace like it was his own home. After so

www.loscerritosnews.net ing of the Paraguayan master Agustin Barrios-Mangore ranged from the Baroque-majestic “La Catedral” to some lovely waltzes including “Vals No. 4” that required every bit of the John Williams mastery of the guitar. His encore, the delicate and utterly delicious “Como Llora Un Estrella” by Venezuelan Antonio Carillo only served to drive the adoring crowd into a well-deserved standing ovation that expressed their fervent hope that Cerritos might coax the guitar maestro back again.

many popular performers it is remarkable to just see an artist do so much with just his two hands and of course a marvelous musical mind. Elegantly underdressed and supremely confident he mixed a few cogent remarks with incredibly expressive playing that captivated the astute audience that almost refused to let him leave after his program was completed. In truth, I feel almost unworthy to describe the performance since the technical aspects of his fingering are beyond my grasp but that seems precisely what he stands for in his shows since he expressed disdain for over-analysis of the works he plays. There is nothing between his hands and the instrument and a lovely current passes from man to guitar in every expression available to the instrument. This program on this night was drawn almost purely from Latin America and so much of the material is not heard often enough but Williams’ playing made the composers shine. The first half featured the Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos and his Five Preludes which despite the five starts and no stops offered the most familiar of all the pieces played. “No. 1 in e minor” was superbly lyrical and energetic, followed by the more wistful and even somber numbers 3 and 4. The final finger of the five was an exceedingly challenging “No. 5 in D major” that Williams turned into a dazzling tour de force. The dramatic “El Cameron Negro” by Cuban Leo Brower was absolutely enchanting with deep rich shades like a journey into the unknown, finished by the sweet “balada de la doncella enamorada” that lingered like fine chocolate on the palate. The second half had more wonders, begun by the amazing “O Bia,” an African tune written by Francis Bebey at mid-century in a style called makossa dance rhythm which actually caused feet to tap in time across the hall. A stunningly beautiful tribute to Bebey called “Hello Francis” was preceded by Williams’ own composition “From a Bird” that was inspired by the song of a feathered friend in his native Australia. Like contented birds the crowd was eating out of Williams hand and his play-

Continued from page 2 involved in current operations. Finally getting in country marks the end of a tough work-up schedule, and the beginning of a challenging deployment - something our Marines are eager to get started. The trip over to Afghanistan was uneventful for most. In one airport, there were folks from the USO cheering for our deploying Marines, taking pictures and wishing us luck. It was nice to see this type of support regardless of the time of day. In most areas where we are located, the food is adequate, and there are decent places to clean up and get rest. Best of all for most Marines is having a 'brother in arms' to share the experience with and lean on when needed. While the energy, eagerness and excitement of being the new crew subsides, it will be replaced by focus, determination and continual adaptation by your Marine. It is a big area out here in Helmand - roughly the size of West Virginia. It is a moonscape

of dust and hardened clay baked by the 130 degree summer heat. But we are moving into the winter season where the temperatures will cool and the rain will come. I recently was visiting a Lance Corporal from an infantry battalion, and talking about some of his experiences during this deployment. He too was very busy as our Marines are. His platoon had several of our Engineers supporting them and he unequivocally stated, "Sir, your engineers are some of the best on the battlefield. Every day they are out saving lives and keeping us moving." This was unsolicited and an indication of the impact our Marines are already having. As stated previously, all of these Marines volunteered to serve their nation, and they are doing it in the most noble way possible. There is no greater honor for me, to lead this Battalion of Marines. They have superb, trained commanders and Staff Non-Commissioned Officers guiding them and mentoring them. They have many challenges ahead, whether it be fixing equipment, clearing routes, or building patrol bases. Rest assure, they will meet those challenges - they tell me, with confidence, every day. Legislative and Policy Board Advisory Committee member Ann Park explained its role of reviewing new and existing school board policies and recommending any changes or modifications to the Board for approval and adoption. “The ABC Unified School District is required to annually notify parents and guardians of rights and responsibilities in accordance with the California Education Code, and the Student and Parent Handbook is also available in Korean,” said Park. Parents were encouraged to contact the District if their children have special needs or may be eligible for the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Program.Student Achievement Board Advisory Committee member Sam Chu attributed the District’s accomplishments to a collaborative effort of parent involvement, teacher interaction and student motivation. “ABC exceeded the Academic Performance Index (API) state target of 800 in 2009 by achieving a score of 814,” said Chu. The average score for the state was 755 and 733 for Los Angeles County. As expected, Whitney High scored the highest of the six high schools with a score of 988, and Carmenita Middle School scored the highest at 939. The top three elementary schools were Cerritos Elementary at 968, Gonsalves Elementary at 962 and Leal Elementary at 960.

Penny’s performance valued in mint condition, Norwalk routs John Glenn By Loren Kopff Norwalk senior running back Elijhaa Penny made the most of his final experience against city rival John Glenn last Friday night in “The Big Game”. Penny rushed for 330 yards, most ever by a member of either team in this rivalry matchup, and tied a career-high six touchdowns as Norwalk blasted Glenn 64-7 at Excelsior Stadium. The win was the widest margin of victory by either team in this rivalry and the 64 points are the most scored by either team. Last season, both teams combined for 77 points in the highest scoring game that is for the Mayor’s Trophy. With Norwalk vice mayor Jesse M. Luera standing on the Norwalk sideline, he watched senior tackle Tolionu Faamatau carry the trophy at the end of the game as he and his teammates shook the hands of the Glenn players. “Tonight’s performance was all about this week working hard,” Penny said. “This game was a big game even though John Glenn had a losing record. Even though they were 0-7, we still treat this as a big game, and it was a rivalry game. In rivalry games, anything can happen. My O-line blocked extremely good tonight.” Norwalk’s name will now be etched on the trophy for the 20th time in the past 29 meetings. The Lancers, who own a 3016 advantage in the series, have also won nine straight and 15 of the last 18 games with the Eagles. But this game showed a different look from the Lancers. Despite putting up 64 points, the Lancers (4-3 overall, 2-1 in the Suburban League) ran only 28 plays from scrimmage and used all but eight plays on all nine touchdown drives. In fact, Norwalk, which has been known for its long drives of up to eight minutes long, spent a total of 9:12 on all of its touchdown drives. “Sometimes I wish coaches would choose the running clock,” said Norwalk head coach Jesse Ceniceros. “We offered the running clock but we still have to run our plays. We weren’t passing and honestly at the end, I was trying not to get in there but it happened a couple of times. “They’re warriors and they’re young and I know they’re beat up right now,” he continued, talking about his opponent. “[Glenn head] coach [Ray] Niemann is a real classy guy and I really like him. I really love that’s he’s coming into our league because he brings a lot of class behind his program.” Two plays into the game, Penny followed his 41-yard run with a six-yard touchdown scamper. After the first of four interceptions, Penny picked up four yards before senior fullback Andre Thompson scored from 14 yards out. When the Lancers got the ball again, Penny went in from 23 yards out and with 6:32 left in the first quarter, the rout was on at 20-0. Penny, who is originally from Los Angeles and went to Crenshaw High for a brief time before moving down the street from Norwalk High, said he saw how hard the kids worked at Norwalk and that’s why he chose the city’s western high school. He would end the first half with 174 on nine carries with three touchdowns. “On my behalf, the coaching staff has been watching a lot of film and they wanted me to pick up my knees a little bit and jump over piles,” Penny said. “With this Double-Wing offense, when you have a good opponent, it could get messy.” “He’s a rough, straight ahead runner,” Niemann said. “They do a good job of getting strong and that’s their strength; that’s the basis of their offense.”

www.loscerritosnews.net

With Norwalk’s offense uncharacteristically on the field for less than 10 minutes in the half, Glenn was having a hard time moving the ball when it had the chance. The Eagles punted three times and had two passes picked off before halftime. To make matters worse, a bad snap resulted in a 17-yard loss which ended with a safety early in the second quarter. So, how did Niemann, in his first year as Glenn’s head coach, handle the situation with his team trailing 36-0 and having gained just 31 yards at the half? “I told them there were a lot of situations where we were successful,” Niemann said. “We did march down the field. We did stop them a few times. You just have to believe that you can do this.” Norwalk, the seventh ranked team in the California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section’s Southeast Division, was on the field for less than three minutes in the third quarter and ran five plays but scored three times, all coming from Penny on runs of 37, 86 and 33 yards. “A lot of it is owed to his line but at the same time we’ve been focusing on him hitting the holes a little bit hard because he is 6’ 2”, 245,” Ceniceros said. “At times, I think he was, not knowing, but running like he was a smaller guy.” Glenn (0-8, 0-4) finally avoided the shutout with 7:44 remaining in the game when junior quarterback Anthony Escobar threw a four-yard pass to senior tight end Daniel Arevalo, much to the chagrin of the Norwalk student body which immediately let out a chorus of boos. Junior fullback Billy Rogers added the final touchdown of the game, a 52-yard run on the first play after Glenn scored. Norwalk senior wingback Billy Moore added 60 yards on seven carries and scored once while defensively, Thompson led the way with three tackles plus a sack while senior defensive back Aaron Sanchez had two and a half tackles. Nine other players had a pair of tackles. Norwalk will host Cerritos tonight on its homecoming, looking to extend a five-game winning streak against the Dons. “We’re getting better,” Ceniceros said. “We had some guys in the beginning who were just learning the system and were green. The difference between this team and last year’s team was last year by game one, we were good. This year, we weren’t as good as last year’s team but I think we’re slowly progressing.” For Glenn, sophomore running back Steven Reed picked up 40 yards on 18 carries while senior Dejon Bernard added 26 yards on seven touches. Bernard also had half a dozen tackles. The Eagles will visit Artesia tonight in a battle of teams looking to get their first victory of the season. Both Glenn and Artesia have averaged less than eight points a game this season. “We’re not sure exactly what we’re coming up against,” Niemann said of Artesia. “I know they have one runner who is very quick, so he kind of matches up with Dejon. But hopefully we’ll get that cohesiveness on the line. “Our linemen are coming into their own and that’s what we’re working on,” Niemann added. “That’s our project. The great thing about that is those guys are all coming back [next season]. It’s the inconsistency on the line due to the injuries and stuff like that. There hasn’t been any cohesiveness all season long because of the injuries.”

of their second straight Suburban League title, all three phases of the game needed to exist. Unfortunately for head coach Khanh Vo, he didn’t see enough defense to go along with the offense and the passing this past Wednesday evening at Mayfair. Cerritos was hoping to leave Mayfair with that title and extend its consecutive league winning streak to 22 matches, the most since Mayfair won a league record 113 straight matches earlier this century. But the Monsoons spoiled any premature celebrations with a 26-24, 21-25, 14-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory, leaving the Lady Dons at 9-10 overall, 9-1 in the circuit as Vo lashed out at his team immediately following the match. This was the second time in at least the past 26 meetings that the teams have played in a fifth set and the win by Mayfair snaps a five-match losing streak to Cerritos “It’s defense, straight defense,” Vo said. “We got away with it against La Mirada and we got away with it against Artesia. It was bound to bite us in the butt. We’ve gone out to large leads and we let up on defense. Balls drop without players hitting the floor to go after it and it’s a team effort. I’m not going to blame any one player. It’s a team effort. When there’s a loose ball, we all hit the floor and we go after it. We didn’t bring the energy tonight on defense.” Both teams traded points until the Lady Dons opened leads of 11-7 and 13-8 in the first set before the Monsoons rallied and eventually took a 17-14 advantage. An ace from senior outside hitter Cherise Kam tied the set at 23-23 and moments later, a serve into the net allowed Cerritos to tie the set at 24-24. The Lady Dons were slow to get their offense going as they recorded 11 kills in the set but were aided by nine Mayfair errors. Once again, a tight beginning led to some breathing room for Cerritos in the second set and when senior opposite hitter Jessica Wu pounded down her seventh kill, her team was up 12-8. Mayfair would not get closer than two points in the set as Wu and sophomore middle hitter Arnelle Duru were pacing the offense with 18 kills between them through the first two sets out of the team’s 26 kills. Cerritos, the seventh ranked team in the California Interscholastic FederationSouthern Section’s Division III-AA pool, raced to a 4-0 lead in the third set and although the hosts managed to tie things up three different times, Cerritos pulled away during the second rotation, thanks to two aces from senior libero Jhea Illo and junior outside hitter Susan Suski. Then in the fourth set, the Lady Dons were primed to put the Monsoons away with four-point leads three times in the later moments. However, Dana Brown served three straight points to give Mayfair its first lead at 21-20. A kill from Suski and a net violation put the Lady Dons in front but [See CERRITOS Page 12]

SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE FOOTBALL

CERRITOS

Continued from page 11 Madison Seaman’s block gave Mayfair the serve and following a double hit violation, Kristen Taylor put down two kills to send the match to a fifth set. “We’ve been relying on our serves, serve receive and offense,” Vo said. “We’ve been very lazy in our rallies.” The Lady Dons grabbed the early momentum by scoring the first four points but the Monsoons quickly responded with four straight. Then with Cerritos leading 6-4, Mayfair took advantage of a serving error and reeled off five straight points to lead 10-6, its largest lead of the match. With her team down 12-7, a kill from Wu sparked the Lady Dons for one final rally and when she spiked her match-high 29th kill, the set was tied at 13-13. But kills from Ariana Scott and Taylor ended the match and left Vo frustrated once again. “In every match you play, you want to win,” Vo said. “I think we’ve been taking it for granted. In terms of league, we’ve gotten to the point where we got a little bit comfortable. We just got lazy.” Kam added nine kills while sophomore middle hitter Bali Leffall-Young pitched in with half a dozen kills. Suski and junior setter Trisha Justiniano each served four aces as Cerritos will host John Glenn today before competing in the Chadwick Tournament on Saturday. Cerritos returns home on Monday to face San Gabriel Valley League power Downey before ending the regular season on Wednesday against Artesia. “If we want to get back to where we were in terms of last year, we have to pick up our energy on defense,” Vo said. “At times we look very, very, very flat and we can’t do that, at least trying to clinch league at somebody else’s place.”

Gahr’s offense runs into brick wall, team faces trio of must win games By Loren Kopff Gahr’s football team was entering its San Gabriel Valley League home opener last Thursday night already 0-1 in the circuit and working on a short week. Its tilt with league favorite Dominguez was considered by some as a must win game. Now, for Gahr to have a chance of the playoffs, it needs to win the final three games of the regular season as the Gladiators were blasted by the Dons 55-6 in which the visitors never let up, scoring twice in the fourth quarter with a running clock including once with no time left in the game, “It’s Dominguez, that’s just what you get,” said Gahr head coach Greg Marshall. “It’s what they do.” The loss was the worst for Gahr (3-4 overall, 0-2 in league) since a 49-0 setback to Dominguez on Oct. 12, 2007. Gahr was also held out of the end zone for the first time since that same game and has now lost three straight games by an average of over 25 points a game. The game was scoreless until Will Gregory, who would be a thorn in Gahr’s side all night long, hit the end zone from 13 yards out 54 seconds into the second quarter. By this time, he had gained 88 yards on 10 carries. Gahr responded when it received the ball at midfield, then was aided by a pass interference call on the Dons. That’s when senior quarterback D.J. Lopez found junior wide receiver Delshawn McClellon for a 29yard gain on a screen pass. But even with the hosts six yards away from tying the

game, a penalty, a sack and an incomplete pass forced the Gladiators to settle for a 33-yard field goal from sophomore Isaiah Soto. Gregory would then carry the ball all six times on the ensuing possession, picking up 49 more yards and scoring on a 10-yard run with 7:31 left in the half. But even with Lopez struggling for the second straight game, Gahr was able to get into the red zone before Soto booted a 31-yard field goal with just under five minutes left in the half. Lopez was eight of 18 for 104 yards in the half but following two more interceptions in the second half and being sacked six times in the game, he would be replaced late in the third quarter by senior Josh Perkins. “Defensively we were okay but we were just out there too much in the first half,” Marshall said. “If we would have gotten some momentum, we would have been okay but the offense was nonexistent. They handled us; they took all of our short stuff away. We had to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns.” Dominguez led 21-6 at the half but it would be a completely different story in the third quarter. Gahr gained only 50 yards in the stanza while the Dons scored on three straight possessions to increase their lead to 42-6. The fourth quarter began with the running clock employed but that didn’t stop Gregory and company as he tacked on a 35-yard run to finish with 195 yards on 23 carries with four touchdowns. Chris Brown would throw for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns. For Gahr, Lopez finished with 142 yards with senior wide receiver Quincy Dickens catching four passes for 57 yards. Senior running back Kalep Davis gained 29 yards on nine carries. Senior linebacker Steven Hoodye led the defense with 10 and a half tackles while senior safety Pedro Prieto added five and a half tackles. “Whenever you have a short week you always want to play Dominguez because they’re going to run the ball and they’re going to run one defense,” Marshall said. “There’s nothing to it; there’s no preparation. You have to get physically tough.” The Gladiators will now have their work cut of them and it begins tonight with a homecoming contest against Lynwood. This season, the league will take two automatic teams to the playoffs instead of three, which had been the case for many years. If there is a silver lining, Downey, which beat Gahr on Oct. 15, fell to Paramount last Friday night, leaving Dominguez and Paramount as the only remaining 2-0 league teams. Downey will host Dominguez tonight and with wins by Gahr and Downey, the Gladiators will be right back in the playoff picture. If it comes down to Gahr possibly getting in as an at-large team, Marshall indicated that how a team finishes a season is a good indicator for getting into the playoffs. “We’ve been 3-2 in league the last couple of years and been tied for second,” Marshall said. “We have to care of the last three just like the last couple of years and hope that something happens where we’re in a tie situation rather than in third place.”

CRIME

Continued from page 5 There was one robbery reported. At 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday October 20, three female suspects stole merchandise from a retail store located in the 20200 block of Bloomfield Avenue. When confronted by loss prevention personnel, a struggle ensued and the suspects fled. Detectives have good investigative leads in this case. There were eight residential burglaries reported last week, up from three the two previous weeks. Five windows were left open or unlocked, and three windows were smashed last week.

Jewelry, a safe, cameras, purses, cash, laptop computers, and MP3 players were stolen. The current 2010 weekly average in residential burglaries is 2.7. The Cerritos Sheriff’s Station/Community Safety Center receives frequent inquiries from new and established residents as to the best methods to protect a home from burglary. Our number one recommendation is to have an alarm system installed. These systems are a proven deterrent and initiate a law enforcement response within minutes. There were two commercial burglaries reported. Three were investigated the week before. The cases last week involved closed businesses. A hole was cut in a wall of an adjacent business, and a rear door was forced open. Loss items consisted of cash and miscellaneous cosmetic products. The 2010 weekly average in commercial burglaries is 2.4. Vehicle burglaries increased by one case after ten were reported last week. Only three of the vehicle burglaries last week occurred in high-volume commercial parking lots. (the most common crime scenes) An unusual seven were in residential neighborhoods. Seven of the targeted vehicles were SUVs. Purses, credit cards, ID, MP3 players, sunglasses, cell phones, laptop computers, vests, jackets, and golf clubs were stolen. The 2010 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is now 7.1. Based on the number of incidents last week that were in residential areas and the type of property stolen, it is evident that residents are leaving these valuable items in their vehicles overnight. Don’t give a criminal the chance to deprive you of your property. If you absolutely must leave items in your car, make sure that they are locked up in the trunk. Vehicle thefts increased from one ten one last week. All of the crimes were from high-volume parking lots. Six SUVs were taken, along with a Honda, a Toyota, and a Chevrolet. The 2010 weekly average in vehicle thefts is 4.6. Cadillac Escalades, GMC Yukons, Chevrolet Tahoes and other more expensive SUVs, are frequently targeted for the theft of parts. This should always be a concern for the owner of one of these types of vehicles. While a steering wheel locking device may not stop the selective thief that specifically wants your vehicle, most thieves will simply locate another one, especially in highvolume parking lots. Some form of protection is better than none at all, so consider equipping your vehicle with an anti-theft device. Another organization that was involved in the job fair was “Ready Study Go!” an after-school education program. According to Program Director Suyan Soni, the organization is a tutoring program, which is located on the grounds of Cerritos Elementary School. Soni also said she came to recruit at Cerritos because of the school’s reputation. “I felt this would be a good place to look for student tutors. They [Cerritos College] have a Teacher TRAC program, which means that hopefully, I can find some students interested in pursuing a career in teaching,” Soni said. Students also had the opportunity to pursue potential self-employment opportunities, such as PartyLite, a direct sales company that specializes in party planning. “This company gives you the opportunity to start your own business. It has flexible hours and you can do it whenever you want,” Unit Leader Ana Teran said. Teran went on to say, “It’s your own schedule. It’s something you can do part-time or full-time. “It just depends where you want to take it.” Despite the presence of small businesses at the job fair, larger business was also on hand. Representatives from Target attended the fair, hoping to find people interested in seasonal work. Christopher Hoouie, human resources representative for the company, said, “A lot of our seasonal positions work around the schedule of college students, so we come out here to try to get some really well-focused students who just want to work hard.” Hoouie described the process that applicants will have to go through, which includes applying online or at the kiosk at any Target store. Another company that participated in the job fair was Instant Tax Service, a company that specializes in tasks such as package delivery, document shredding and tax preparation. Instant Tax Service was at the job fair with the hopes of recruiting students who are business and accounting majors. Cerritos College Student Placement Specialist Christina The states that the reason behind Cerritos holding the job fair is in order to bring the job market to students. “Instead of going to different sites and such, they [students] can talk to and network to employers,” The said. “Networking is a very important thing as a part of finding a job and at least you can see face to face and make a good impression with recruiters and after that, they can follow up after the job fair,” she said. The mentioned she believes the job fair also serves as a tool for students to find what career options are available for students and their corresponding majors. Students like Jose Rivera found the job fair to be a good way for youths to break away from the negative connotations of today’s economy. “I think it’s really great because it helps other students realize t there are many jobs out there,” Rivera said. “It’s also good exploration to know what you really like and what majors you

Education is most important to our lives.” School officials said with the money on hand combined with pledges, the school has raised $2.3 million, leaving a balance to be raised of $700,000. This will give the School $3 million needed to match a state grant of $3 million for a total of $6 million. The state grant comes under Proposition 1D, that earmarks money for school improvements. Plans for the multi media facility have been submitted to L.C, Architect in Rancho Cucamonga who forwarded them to the Division of State Architects for approval. Except for some minor modification, the plans were approved by the state. Following final approval the school will advertise for bids with contractors for construction of the center.
