Published in 2014 By the students of Design Computing at The University of Sydney Wilkinson Building, 148 City Road, Darlington www.visuallydefiant.com Copyright 2014 This book was printed by Carbon8 in Sydney Special thanks to all those who contributed images in particular the graduate students of Design Computing at The University of Sydney, 2014. Thank you Nikash Singh for being there to give us a helping hand throughout the journey. Thanks also to The Dean of Architecture, Design and Planning John Redmond, John Allsopp, Jonathan Hulme, Martin Tomitsch, Rob Saunders and Kazjon Grace and John Elliott for starting it all off. Thanks to the lovely ladies who work in the cafe of the Wilkinson building. Without knowing it, they’ve given us energy (in the form of coffee, ham and cheese croissants, chocolates, chewing gum, Red Bull, etc.) which allowed us to get through many all nighters and successfully hand in our assignments.

DEAN’S WELCOME The Bachelor of Design Computing and the Master of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts are unique degrees in Australia. Over the course of their studies, the lecturers in the Design Lab equip students with a broad range of skills in design, technology and critical thinking that allow our graduates to go on to become leaders in the creative industries and beyond. The members of the Design Lab bring their passion for human-centred design research to their teaching, providing students with a foundation in design practices and design thinking, as well as the technical skills to realise ambitious projects. Through a series of design studios our students are challenged to apply human-centred design practices to create exceptional user experiences and complete ambitious projects from conception to implementation. Consequently, our graduates mix of design and IT technical skills stand apart from those of other programmes. They are highly sought in the IT and design industries. It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the end of year exhibition, a showcase of the works produced by our graduating students from the Bachelor of Design Computing and the Master of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts. The exhibition is both a celebration of their achievements during their studies at the University of Sydney and a testament to their ability to conceive and develop digital environments and interactions, using creative technologies that may well become part of our everyday lives in the future.

FOREWORD BY JOHN ALLSOPP When I had the good fortune to study Computer Science here at the University of Sydney back in the 1980’s, most students, let alone most people, had barely seen a computer, not to mention used one. Australia had no permanent connection to the Internet (back then we called it ‘Internet’, there was no definitive article). A MB of RAM cost a thousand dollars (effectively as much as $4000 in today’s terms). Which means the RAM in your average phone today would have cost 128 million dollars in today’s terms. And filled an entire building, and drawn enough power to run an aluminium smelter. In the intervening quarter of a century, computers have left their niches in finance, aerospace, physics, and engineering, and permeated throughout all of industry, society and culture. I doubt few if any of us who studied computing back then imagined how the large air conditioned units, and the then brand new GUI driven more personal computers would become phones in our pockets connected to global networks, tablet devices, wearables, and network enabled everything. One can hardly begin to imagine what similar transitions will occur over the next 30 years, as computing power doubles and doubles again every 18 months or so, devices continue to shrink, and power consumption increasingly diminishes. But this is the world these students will help bring into life. A world where almost everything is smart, and internet enabled. I envy them their opportunity to remake the world yet again, only hoping they do a better job than some previous generations.

DESIGN COMPUTING “We are entering a second industrial revolution driven by advances in artificial intelligence and robotic technologies: autonomous robots are a common sight in warehouses; Apple’s Siri routinely answers questions posed in natural language; robotic vacuum cleaners have become commonplace home appliances; and Google’s self-driving cars have logged millions of miles on the highways of America. Questions surrounding how we will interact with these increasingly intelligent machines open up a world of new possibilities for designers to explore. The drawing machines on show in the graduate exhibition are the result of an exploration by the final year students in the Bachelor of Design Computing into the future of human-robot interaction. By building machines engaged in the original creative act, mark making, the graduating students have imagined a future where humans and robots collaborate in novel ways. The result is a collection of remarkable machines that demonstrate the ingenuity (and determination) of our students that are sure to surprise and delight and hopefully intrigue and provoke” DR ROB SAUNDERS

LUKE ABAGI When asked, ‘describe Luke in one sentence’, people would generally say an outrageous man with outrageous ideas... He would like to think that his ability to critically analyse problems motivates him to come up with solutions and innovative ideas. As a self proclaimed artist and musician, he has a passion for creative activities and developing new skills. Facing challenges motivates him to be a better designer, a better creator and ultimately a more knowledgeable man.

NATALIE CHUNG Natalie is a self-proclaimed bookworm and lover of all things cute. Photoshop was her best friend since the beginning of high school and they’ve always had fun times together, creating wallpapers and editing photos. When thinking of a good design Natalie will go back to the basics as she believes simple is best. She always remembers her teacher’s favourite saying KISS: Keep it Simple Silly. If not designing, Natalie is most likely watching animated movies or writing fantasy/sci-fi stories.

He also enjoys the challenges of coding websites as well as programs, persistently trying to solve problems either by himself or with peers to arrive at a favourable solution. If he isn’t discussing design concepts or coding problems with friends, then he will probably be playing an online game or will be out indulging in Japanese cuisine with friends.

BELINDA VIDLER Belinda has been described by others as a romanticist, idealist, philanthropist, psychoanalyst, gold medallist, and soon-to-be gradualist. She however considers herself a digital artist, first and foremost. When not at uni, you’ll find Belinda at the drawing board, planning the next project, the next destination, the next experiment and the next adventure. To Belinda, design is an art, a creative process, a part of me, a part of them, a friend, a foe, and a bit of magic.

EMILIO VILLANTE Emilio Villante can be described as a selfless giver, a people’s champion and the master of triangles, but he would rather be known as a regular guy who likes to make websites and screw around in Illustrator. If you were to ask him what his favourite things were in life he would reply with rum, abstract creativity and HEMAN! What a great guy.

JACK WONG A wild Jack appears! Jack is an enthusiastic student who spends most of his time doodling on his drawing tablet and/or listening to music. Found wearing bright, highlighting outfits and accessories, his personality can be represented by the colour spectrum. Jack finds that colour is the foundation of any design, and that it contributes heavily on how the potential within a design is expressed. Peacefully he goes through life carrying only one phrase; Forever stay young!

RAYMOND WONG Ray’s interests lie in all aspects of visual design. Although he really enjoys the creative side of things, he doesn’t mind a bit of problem solving here and there either. Ray believes being able to understand a problem from both perspectives offers better design solutions. When he’s not working his magic creating timeless art, you’ll probably find him online dominating newbs, or out somewhere chilling with friends over a BBQ. More likely the former.

DAVID PIEROTTI David is an eccentric who daydreams a lot so he usually has strange yet creative ideas. He doesn’t like going for long walks on the beach, he’s never tried Pina Coladas and finds getting caught in the rain is incredibly frustrating. If he’s not at uni, he’s “oh god” he needs a life... Just kidding. He’s usually all over Sydney. David believes that design is making a change for the better by questioning the world you see. Programming is just a headache.

A NOTE FROM THE STUDENTS How do I sum up our three years here? When I try, often in vain, to explain exactly what we do in Design Computing to friends and family, I usually try to centre my explanation on what I feel is the focus of the course; the intersection of people and technology. It seems fitting then that our time here has been defined as much by the technology we have worked on as the people we worked with. We’ve learnt so much about a wide range of processes and technologies, everything from how to conduct solid usercentred design to how to develop and build creative robots. I’ve been fascinated and amazed by the work I’ve seen you create, as have I been surprised at what I’ve created myself. In our three years together we’ve been able to push boundaries and bring together new ideas, creating truly unique and novel works. As for, “the people we worked with?” We started as a group of people drawn to the course from a diverse variety of backgrounds, bringing a range of different skills and prior knowledge. Some had a strong passion for digital art or design; others were interested in taking a more creative slant with their technical skills. A few even happened on the course by chance looking for other degrees in the architecture faculty.

Despite this diversity, over our three years we’ve formed strong friendships, whether it was through shared late-night despair in the computer labs before deadlines, or over beers at Hermann’s bar the next day. Thank you all for making this course so great and being such a dynamic community of people. I’d also like to profusely thank all the staff of the Design Lab we had the pleasure of learning from, present and past. You were always available, always invested, and deeply passionate about your respective fields. We couldn’t have asked for more. So, how do I try to sum up our three years studying Design Computing? How do I summarise all we’ve learnt and made in our three years into something short, snappy, and easily digestible here? I don’t think I really can. All I can say is go out there, make great work. I can’t wait to hear about all you do in the future. SAM COLE ON BEHALF OF THE DESIGN COMPUTING GRADUATES OF 2014

FINAL WORD BY KAZJON GRACE Design Computing graduates are pretty unique. Sure, every university program claims its graduates are unique — they have to, after all — but Design Computing is in the unique position of actually being right. As evidence for this let me submit the fumbling conversations our newest class of graduates have had with well-meaning yet tech-averse relatives, in which they try in vain to communicate what it is they went to school to learn.

This is probably the part of the vaguely-inspiring wordwaffle where I write something about how you first came to us as mere neophytes, and through courage, community and raw talent you grew into something something something... But hopefully everyone but you soon-to-be-former-students has stopped reading this by now, and we can talk plainly. Teaching you all was a blast — you were always fascinated and always fascinating. You were and are awesome.

Within the technology community — in sharp contrast to within your family’s holiday gatherings — design is now indisputably mainstream, recognised as critical by everyone from florists to financiers. The Class of 2014 step into a world where there are a hundred titles they could claim: interaction designer, user experience architect, visual designer, usability analyst, customer experience designer, front-end developer, motion designer, the list goes on. Every single one of you is not skilled solely for one of those jobs, but instead comprehends the role of all of them. You are not just creators of beautiful things, nor of useful things, nor of well-engineered things. And if you think understanding stuff that isn’t your job won’t be valuable in real life, then just wait, and remember that I told you so. Industry has many terms for those whose talents transcend disciplines: you are “T-shaped Professionals” and “Unicorn Designers”. The Design Computing recipe is simple: one part aesthetics, one part empathy, and one part machinery.

Thank you all so much for asking me to write this Now get out there.
