This is my third complete season as Chief Executive at Lawrence Batley Theatre and I’m pleased to announce it includes our cover stars and old friends Gary Clarke Company. One of my proudest moments here was a site-specific production of Chronicles, choreographed by Gary which reopened the theatre after our capital redevelopment work.

During that time we got to know each other well, Gary told me of his magical first experience of seeing professional contemporary dance at our theatre back in the 90s. This gave him the inspiration and ambition to work to achieve his dreams of becoming a dancer and then a choreographer. This May, I am so pleased to see him bringing back WASTELAND, one of his feature length shows that reflects on his background as a miners son growing up around the 90s club culture.

This summer we’re putting on Summer in the Courtyard for the fourth year running. It’s become a popular annual outdoor festival that we first launched back in 2020. Each year we pay loads of local bands and musicians to entertain our audiences for free in our Courtyard on Friday and Saturday evenings. This relaxed format is open to all to enjoy a pizza, some brilliant local live music and hopefully some sunshine all summer long.

The shows we have this season are such a variety, from rock gigs to puppet shows for kids, to Yorkshire Premiers from Olivier Award winning choreographers to open mic nights for local poets, rappers and spoken word artists. We really do have something for everyone.

From acclaimed British choreographer Gary Clarke and the sequel to his multi award winning production about the collapse of the mining community, COAL.

Based in the illegal rave scene of the 1990s, WASTELAND follows the next generation head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, tragedy and survival.
