auslec – a new year, a new look

OUR VIEW MINERALS RESOURCE RENT TAX

AUSLEC www.auslec.com.au

I

t’s been nearly two years since Prime Minister Gillard announced the Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT), in what seemed to be a masterstroke at the time to break the super-profit-tax gridlock between miners and the former Prime Minister Rudd. In the Autumn 2012 issue of Auslec Solutions, we provided an overview of the MRRT and outlined the Federal Government’s objectives in developing the tax but in the 12 months since then, the resources market hasn’t exactly played out as the Government expected. It’s widely known that the MRRT hasn’t delivered its projected revenue. In fact, it was only after pressure from the Opposition and the Senate that Treasurer Wayne Swan finally reported in February that the MRRT raised a paltry $126 million in its first 6 months since coming into effect on the 1st July, 2012; with little hope of reaching the $3 billion forecast in the May budget. Swan explained. “Revenues from MRRT have taken a massive hit from the impact of continued global instability, commodity price volatility and a high dollar.” That’s a reasonable response, given the poor performance of the resources market last year which saw iron ore bottoming out at US$87/tonne in September; way down from US$180/tonne when the MRRT was introduced. In 2013 however, things are looking up for the mining industry and the Federal Government coffers as a result. When a journalist questioned the Prime

Minister about the MRRT’s apparent lack of success at the National Press Club in Canberra on 30th January this year, Prime Minister Gillard replied, “The way we’ve seen revenues fall as a unit of GDP is not about the MRRT. The huge write-downs have been in company tax and we’ve also seen a lessening of capital gains”. “There’s fashionable commentary that lots of revenue is flowing in from mining at this stage, including through company tax. Because we’re in the investment-phase of the boom, this isn’t the phase where people pay a lot of company tax”. “They pay company tax when they’ve done the investment; started pulling the oil or gas or whatever it is out of the ground and sell it and make profit on the transaction”. “The MRRT, we always understood, would be a tax with movement in it. It is deliberately calibrated as a profits-based tax because that’s the most efficient way of doing it”. Iron ore has jumped almost 80% since September, to over US$150/tonne, and if it’s sustained through the quarter, analysts predict big profits for the miners. In February, Commonwealth Bank (CBA) analysts commented, “We’re at the end of the downgrade cycle and the market should again begin focusing on the valuation upside”. A 9 February Age newspaper report estimated that if iron ore stays above US$150/tonne through the June quarter, Fortescue’s earnings would be up 52% on last year, Rio Tinto’s up 22% and BHP’s

up 12%. All that translates into significant MRRT from these and other big mining companies. Not surprisingly, the miners are hosing down the speculation. Fortescue CFO, Stephen Pearce stated at the company’s recent December Quarterly Production Update, “We don’t pay and don’t anticipate paying any MRRT. It’s structured as a super-profits tax and, at the moment, the industry isn’t making super profits”. And according to Mitchell Hooke, CEO of Minerals Council of Australia: “The minerals industry was paying its way under the tax arrangements that existed prior to the introduction of the MRRT, contributing more than $20 billion to State and Federal coffers in 2010-2011 alone”. This figure is 500% more than at the start of the mining boom. Hooke goes on to say that, “Economic forecaster Macroeconomics estimates that between 2005 and 2015, the mining boom will add $250 billion to the Federal Budget bottom-line without the MRRT and carbon tax. That’s enough revenue to fund the Defence budget for over a decade”. Whichever way you look at it, 2013 promises to be an exciting year for the MRRT - affecting not only miners, but each and every Australian.

It’s in response to this ‘Industrial Evolution’ that Auslec are expanding their already strong profile around the country, beginning with a fresh new logo that Marketing Manager, Steve Emanouel says will better express the product and service offering of the organisation. “To further assist our business in maximising growth, particularly within the various mining sectors, we’re refreshing our logo with a message that better reflects our offering”, says Steve. “The Auslec logo itself including the word AUSLEC and the electrical pulse will always remain the same. We’ve simply refined our positioning slogan to better reflect who we are, what we do and why we’re different”.

The logo refresh is the first step in communicating to both existing and potential customers exactly what Auslec is capable of. “As many industries, such as mining continue their growth,” says Steve, “we’ve come across a number of prospective customers that are not entirely clear on what we are capable of providing to them. This brand refresh is designed to assist in addressing this”. The objective of the new tagline “Supplying Electrical, MRO and More” is to communicate three key elements. 1) That the traditionally specialised Electrical offering of Auslec is still very much core to the business and that customers can continue to rely on this as they have done for many years.

2) That a full suite of products, advice and knowledge specific to the Maintenance, Repair and Operating (MRO) sector is readily available. 3) And thirdly that Auslec do MORE. More in terms of relevant value adding services that provide real business solutions to customers. Steve says that Auslec staff have fully embraced the ‘new look’ and are excited about being part of such a progressive organisation. “It’s great that at this early stage, everyone is on board and enthusiastic about our direction but ultimately, we are here for our customers and everything we do, every improvement we make, is to ensure a better and more complete service for them”.

floody hell! In particular, the Queensland town of Bundaberg and surrounding areas were hit harder than most with over 1,000 homes evacuated and thousands of people affected. According to the Australian newspaper, a fleet of at least 12 helicopters, including army Black Hawks, plucked stranded people from the roofs of homes as police told people to break holes in ceilings to get on to the roof -rather than risk climbing on to them from the outside. As most of Australia would be only too aware, Queensland and New South Wales were ravaged by floods and destructive winds in January this year; just two years after many towns suffered the same heartbreak from the floods that claimed 35 lives. Ex tropical cyclone Oswald caused destruction along the nation’s eastern seaboard with damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding, tidal surges and even tornados. Thousands of homes, businesses, roads, bridges and services were inundated and six people died as a result of the tragedy.

The flooding in Bundaberg had a very direct impact on the Auslec family with sister branch L&H forced to evacuate and close. As our graphic image clearly shows, flood levels were so high that the entire town was shut down as people concentrated on ensuring their own and others’ survival. Independent Distribution Committee chair of the Queensland Floods Appeal 2013, Terry Mackenroth said that money from the appeal has already started flowing to people badly affected by the floods caused by Cyclone Oswald. “Our

focus is on getting help to those that need it most as quickly as possible and with these payments going out, we are beginning to deliver on that promise”. Here at Auslec, we have been in contact with both the Red Cross and Salvation Army to find out how we can assist. Both organisations have advised that the biggest issue facing relief workers and agencies is getting donations such as clothing and bedding into the actual Bundaberg and surrounding areas so at this stage, monetary donations are of the greatest help. Like many Auslec and L&H staff have done, you can log on to either of The Salvation Army or Red Cross websites and make a donation that will go directly to the flood disaster relief. Auslec Solutions is very pleased to report that although a little wet, all L&H and Auslec staff in the effected areas are safe and well; working hard to rebuild their homes, their businesses, their towns and their lives.

Currently the city’s population is around 200,000 and with 5,000 new residents making the move to Townsville each year, numbers are expected to reach 240,000 by 2020 making the region home to more people than currently reside on the Sunshine Coast. Located around halfway between the tip of Cape York and Brisbane on Queensland’s north eastern coast, Townsville is towered over by an accumulation of red granite known as Castle Hill - which at 292 metres tall, fails in its quest to be called a mountain by just 8 metres! Townsville is also home to one of the Auslec network’s newest branches. Opening in 2012, the Townsville branch has quickly established itself as a critical supplier to the area as manager Brandon Hillhouse explains. “Townsville has a very strong and diverse economy with significant industries that include retail trade, health & education services, government administration & defence, construction, mining, manufacturing and property & business services. In response to the mixed bag of industries we have around us, our product and service offering has to be wide and varied”. Wide and varied could also be used to describe the 3,736 square kilometres that the local government area of Townsville covers but that’s not enough for the local crew of Auslec Townsville according to Brandon. “We service a number of international mining, oil and gas companies that are based anywhere from Bowen in the south right up to the Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea. You could say we literally stretch the borders”.

administration outside of Brisbane. Regional health services are provided by the Townsville Hospital and a number of research institutions such as James Cook University, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Department of Primary Industries and the CSIRO are located here. “We also have a large Defence presence here thanks to our army and air force bases so I think we have a pretty unique grouping of industry in Townsville”, says Brandon. “Each sector in its own right can influence the local economy”.

One handed use - Open jaws fit into tight spaces offering access to panels/boxes. Less strain on hands and wrists.

Efficiency - Cuts 300mm2 Copper and aluminium XLPE in under 8 seconds. Delivers up to 150 cuts 240mm2 Copper XLPE per charge. (3.0Ah)

Fast and powerful - 2 speed gearbox delivers high torque for large cables and speed for more frequent sizes.

LED Light - Brightens even the dullest area for accurate cutting

Fuel gauge - Shows clearly remaining fuel for productive use on any worksite.

That local economy is also significantly added to thanks to its burgeoning manufacturing output. Townsville lays claims as the only city in the world to refine three separate base metals in Copper, Nickel and Zinc. Copper concentrate from Mount Isa, Zinc Ore from Cloncurry and Nickl Ore from Asia all make their way to Townsville for refining. Queensland Rail and the Port of Townsville provide the transport hub for this and the regions’ other mining and agricultural industries.

s the largest populated city in North Queensland and one of the fastest growing cities in the state, Townsville has in recent times established itself as a critical hub for the region.

With major customers such as MMG Mining, Barminco, Queensland Nickel Refinery and Suns Metal already on the books, Brandon is excited about what the future holds for Auslec. “Each day we are providing new solutions to new customers along with the core products that Auslec is historically known for”, he says. When asked what the most challenging requests from customers have been so far, Brandon recalls the request for 15,000 5ltr water containers for Papua New Guinea – “Oh and the bullet proof lights suitable for war zones and blast zones”, he says matter of factly. Oh well….all in a days work!

SUPPLIER’S VIEW hat differentiates one cable manufacturer from another? Beyond supply, what are the attributes that as a customer, you should be entitled to from your cable manufacturer?

AUSLEC www.auslec.com.au

In todays demanding industrial markets, everyone is looking for the edge that will help them grow their business, the edge that makes them better than the competition, the edge that creates real value for customers.

8

In August of last year, Australian company Olex officially became Nexans Olex and with that, immediately found themselves as the cable manufacturer with local knowledge……and global expertise. With over a century of experience in providing complete expertise in cabling and cabling systems via ‘best-of-class’ solutions, Nexans has bought a ‘world focus’ to the local market. This integration in to a leading global brand means that traditional Olex customers will receive even greater value according to Nexans Olex Marketing Manager, Shekhar Prince. “Being part of such a global powerhouse now enables us to leverage off the Nexans global network of manufacturing facilities and enhanced sourcing capabilities. This has enormous potential and benefit for our customers. Our goal is for Nexans Olex to be the conduit through which all market cable requirements and needs are channeled”. To highlight the capabilities of this newly formed operation, one need look no further than the recent Robertson Army barracks redevelopment in Darwin NT that Nexans Olex were involved with. Robertson Barracks is a purpose designed Army base located approximately 20 minutes from Darwin; just 5km north of the township of Palmerston. Built during the1990’s, Robertson is now home to the Army’s 1st Brigade and a number of Defence lodger units such as the Land Warfare Centre and 1st Troop, Emergency Response Squadron and other tenants including Frontline, Credit Unions and supporting contractors. Occupying

around 165 hectares, Robertson Barracks is home to a working population of 3,500 military and civilian personnel. The barracks redevelopment was a significant project that amongst other things, required major high voltage (HV) infrastructure deployment. Working closely with lead contractor, SEQ Electrical and end contractor, John Holland, Nexans Olex were responsible for the supply of three types of HV XLPE cable. From the project outset, SEQ Electrical and John Holland made it clear that they and the customer were looking to partner with experienced organisations, capable of demonstrating experience and supply capabilities beyond the norm. With Quality Control being a critical element for a project like this, Nexans Olex arranged a factory tour of their Tottenham manufacturing facility for both SEQ and John Holland representatives. The tour was designed to validate and verify that the manufacturing systems and processes being followed were ‘worlds best’ as Craig Moulin, State Sales Manger QLD for Nexans Olex explains. “In this instance, our

customers quite rightly wanted to see for themselves what our capabilities were. It was much more than just supplying cable. SEQ and John Holland expected assurances on our QA, distribution methods and supply capabilities”.

SAFE HANDS PLIERS Part No. WATMA880SH

Other key areas of the supply chain included technical support and delivery management of the cable that took place over many weeks to coincide with the redevelopment works. “We provided an internal Project Manager for this job to ensure that all conditions were met and to ensure delivery in full and on time”, says Craig. This provision of a Project Manager is an example of how Nexans Olex will add value to customers in 2013 and beyond. “We’ve identified a need in some instances to have more than just our product guys involved in customer projects”, says Shekhar Prince. We’ve developed a program whereby representatives from our technical, IT or supply chain teams combine with our account managers to provide specific and in some cases, unique solutions for our customers and supply partners like Auslec”.

THE BUSINESS BEHIND MINING

10

sk the average Australian what they know about mining and they’ll morethan-likely tell you that it’s a virtually limitless resource that Australians can just dig up whenever we want; or it’s what saved the country from going into recession during the GFC; or it’s what made Gina Reinhardt the richest woman in the world overnight; or it’s where the best paying jobs are to be found.

While the industry has set itself up to deal with some levels of market movement, that sort of brutal volatility can be, and sometimes is, devastating to mining companies.

Ask someone actually working in the mining industry – whether it’s out in the mines, in the infrastructure that supports it, or in the offices that manage it – and you might just get a completely different story.

A culture of operational and commercial excellence For mining companies to ride out the various ‘storms’ of market and environmental changes and still maintain long-term profitable operations, they not only need to be managed with precision but they need to craft out a culture of operational and commercial excellence - bringing all the stakeholders in their supply chain with them.

Mining is like any other mature business – inherently complex, has a dynamic market demand that’s hard to predict, is highly regulated, incurs substantial operational expenses regardless of output and requires massive up-front capital investment before the first saleable output is produced. Given the scale of a mining operation, run well and there’s a lot of

In a search to understand this culture, Auslec Solutions spoke recently with Deanna Lomas, General Manager Supply Chain at MMG Limited and Peter Silveira, Procurement Contracts Manager at a large government instrumentality that’s closely involved with Australia’s mining industry to discover some of their ‘secrets’. MMG was formed in 2009, when the

improvement opportunities”. “Our desire is to deploy what’s successful in our existing operations into new operations and continue to operate in an authorised, productive, efficient and scalable manner globally. We’re also committed to being agile and developing a resilient supply chain with sustainable commerciality.” This supply chain is an integral part of MMG’s pursuit of operational and commercial excellence. MMG’s desire is to also understand the capability and expertise of suppliers local to their operations and evaluate these suppliers’ values and strategies to determine alignment with those of MMG. “We look for the strategic potential in a supplier”, Deanna adds. “Aligned values and standards create a strong foundation for a strategic supply partnership”. Peter Silveira agrees entirely. Peter’s Contract Management Guide is used universally throughout his organisation

“We look for the strategic potential in a supplier. Aligned values and standards create a strong foundation for a strategic supply partnership”. money to be made. Get it wrong and the outcome can be economically crippling. Volatile market conditions Iron ore spot prices over the last 12 months are evidence of the mining markets volatility. In January 2012, iron ore was fetching a healthy US$140/tonne. By April, it inched its way to $150/tonne but then dropped sharply to $87/tonne by September. Come years end, the spot price surprised even the most optimistic forecasts by surging past its April high of $160/tonne. Copper similarly endured price fluctuations in 2012 but these were minor compared to its ‘roller-coaster’ pricing over the past two decades. For years, copper was stable, sitting around US$2.00/ kg. In 2004 however, the price shot up to $8.00/kg where it sat for a couple of years and crested at around $8.60/kg in 2008 before plummeting back down to below $3.00/kg in 2009, albeit momentarily, then skyrocketing to new record highs of $10.00/kg in late 2010 to mid-2011 and settling down over the past 18 months to oscillate between $7.40 and $8.60/kg.

majority of assets owned by OZ Minerals – the company formed by the merger of Oxiana and Zinifex a year earlier – was acquired by China Minmetals Corporation. With its head office in Melbourne’s CBD, MMG explores, develops and mines copper, zinc, lead, gold, silver and nickel in Australia, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Its geographic and mineral diversity proves to be both advantageous and challenging. “MMG is a relatively young company built on a foundation of operations with a long heritage”, Deanna states. “Having recently acquired a new mining operation in Africa, we’re focussing on developing the supply functional expertise we have across our diverse operations to optimise each of them and return value to the business. This is made possible through an organisational model that has centre-led functions”. “Our operations are currently at various stages of alignment to our organisational model, with our centralised team based in the Melbourne head office. The group has a diverse range of expertise enabling us to bring value to our assets through the identification of inbound supply chain

for the application of best practice in administration, governance and performance management of contracts, supply chain optimisation and long-term stakeholder engagement that works to the mutual benefit of both the supplier and client. “The supply chain is a series of partnerships all ideally working to a common outcome or goal”, Peter remarks. “Where there’s cooperation and trust, the process runs more smoothly. “It doesn’t make it completely free of problems but it does help to mitigate the impediments to sorting them out if and when problems arise”. “I always start by encouraging procurement officers to not delay payments for satisfactory performance because unreasonably delayed payments can undermine working relationships. Trust, and its manifestation in the contract, is the ‘oil’ that keeps business running smoothly”. “Here’s a good tip to gain involvement from a supplier’s management”, continues

AUSLEC www.auslec.com.au

A

11

AUSLEC www.auslec.com.au

That’s a big step towards operational and commercial excellence.

12

Given the remote locations of its mining sites and a desire to contribute to the long-term economic and social development of the communities in which it operates, MMG have introduced a local procurement standard that requires sites to have strategic programs to provide opportunities for local and indigenous procurement.

supplier and client, be it in the mining or any other industry with a complex supply chain that requires engagement by all stakeholders for it to be successful. He cites return on investment (ROI) as a being a critical performance measure for both sides of a supply contract to evaluate the efficiency of their respective investments. “In the case of contract management”, says Peter. “The ROI may be difficult to quantify, depending on the type and reasons for the supplier agreement. The key is to ensure the program is managed within the allocated budget and avenues for cost improvement/reductions are explored. Emphasis should be placed on the management rather than the methodology; the goal being to ensure that the contracts spend is maintained within the budget constraints, the service levels are deemed acceptable and, where possible, continuous improvement initiatives be implemented”.

“But maintaining a good relationship doesn’t mean the terms of the contract are not enforced where this is warranted. It’s about enforcing the terms of the contract in a professional manner based on evidence of contractual performance. Provided the client has fulfilled its responsibilities, has provided early warning of performance problems and has maintained a professional relationship, enforcing the terms of the contract should be seen as a fair and reasonable course of action and therefore one that should not adversely affect the relationship between parties”. Peter simply but accurately sums up the business behind mining. “All supply chain relationships – particularly those in highly complex and volatile mining operations – should be managed in a professional manner and be based on cooperation and mutual understanding taking into account the need for probity and ethical behaviour”.

“MMG is committed to leaving a lasting legacy that contributes to fostering selfsustaining communities beyond the life of the asset”, explains Deanna. “It’s our ethos to create a procurement process that is fair, transparent and responsive to the capacity of local vendors”. “There are many examples across our operations where this is done well by MMG. We have an obligation to articulate our expectations to the local providers and work with them where we can to help them build efficient and sustainable businesses. Compliance with the requirements of a global company like MMG can bring benefits to local suppliers, who can develop their business model over time to explore new sources of revenue prior to mine closure”. “We like to see our suppliers business grow as a result of capacity building through a supply partnership with MMG. For example a local road-maintenance contractor at one of our operations could be encouraged to secure roadmaintenance contracts with local and federal governments, so that they’re self-sustainable. We see opportunities for direct skill transfer to other business revenue streams so they can continue to run their businesses after our operations close”. Peter shares a similar ethos in working to a long-term win-win relationship between

BBQ BRILLIANCE

edium rare, well done or ‘chef’s choice’? When it comes to how you prefer your steak cooked, there are just as many ways to have it prepared as there are rules and etiquette around the sacred BBQ. For decades, Australians have enjoyed this iconic backyard tradition with each generation invariably learning the rules and regulations from the one before and in turn, passing these on to the generation that follows – that’s just the way things are. Whilst a friendly informal BBQ appears unsuspecting and simple, there are in fact some very particular procedures taking place that to the untrained eye go unnoticed. But for the BBQ guru...

AUSLEC www.auslec.com.au

To turn or not to turn Ah yes, the eternal quandary of whether to turn a steak just once or continually turn the meat in order to achieve the best result.

14

Most BBQ aficionados will turn a steak only once regardless of the cut, thickness or desired finish. Turning a steak multiple times has a tendency to toughen the meat and disturb the all important juices that are imperative to a perfect outcome. Certainly, steak thickness is a consideration when deciding whether to turn once or more often but remember – most BBQ manufacturers were ingenious enough to install knobs to adjust the flame intensity so give them a turn; the knobs that is, not the steaks. Many believe the only acceptable reasons to move a steak once the cooking procedure has commenced is to turn it the obligatory once, reposition the meat at a 90 degree angle to achieve the visually important grill marks and finally, to remove the steak for serving. Anymore turning or interference with the steak than this can be grounds for instant dismissal from the BBQ perimeter. That’s just the way things are. To prick or not to prick This little dilemma has been around since Jesus played full back for Jerusalem. When cooking sausages on the BBQ, there are two types of chefs – prickers and non-prickers. Fans of pricking the sausage do so in the belief that they are draining the fat and water content to prevent them from exploding. Now that may well have been necessary in the war and depression years when the term ‘bangers’ evolved thanks to the very high water content of sausages. In those days, as the meat(?!) cooked and

the internal water pressure built up, an eventual explosion would take place with a bang – this led to people everywhere pricking sausages to allow the steam to escape. Thankfully these days, our sausages are no longer filled with the same amount of water. They contain the right combination of meat, water and fat that collectively is critical to the cooking process. Pricking the sausage only serves in allowing the juices to escape and leaves you with a dry and less flavoursome outcome. On top of that, the dreaded ‘flare up’ can occur when the released fat and juices make contact with the BBQ flame – spectacular for onlookers, not so great for the BBQ chef’s eyebrows. So in short, don’t be a sausage pricker; there’s no need to be. Anyway, if the little blighters were meant to be pierced with holes, wouldn’t they just come pre pricked? That’s just the way things are. Straight to the hall of shame: A balmy night, a dozen good friends over and you’ve just put the medium rare ordered steaks on to perfectly coincide with the finishing time of the ‘well dones’ – that way everyone gets to eat together. After all, that’s just part of being askilled and accomplished BBQ chef. Suddenly, a knot in your stomach develops as the sizzle ceases and you realise that

should always be on standby; ready to be called into action should the need arise. Failing that, shell out a few bucks and get the barbie connected to mains gas because an empty gas cylinder is unforgivable. That’s just the way things are. Grill or hot plate? Some BBQ gurus swear by the grill and the grill only while others believe the modest hot plate is all that’s needed to create the perfect meal. Truth is, it’s not really a case of either/or. Each surface plays a role when it comes to creating the perfect BBQ experience. The grill has been used as a cooking surface around the world for centuries so clearly we shouldn’t be trying to reinvent the wheel here – it works; and works well so it should be the primary surface used by any authentic BBQ chef. Steaks of all sizes, snags, chicken wings and the like should all be cooked on the grill to ensure that a full BBQ flavour is achieved. Just make sure you’ve pre-heated the barbie so that it’s nice and hot before slapping a piece of bovine on it. The hot plate on the other hand serves a different purpose. Again, heat is the key here so make sure the plate is hot before using it. Steaks (regardless if one guest has their’s medium rare and another well done)

“The bloke cooking the BBQ is king. He need not hear your opinions. He does not want your advice”.

your BBQ has become nothing more than a warming tray and that you have committed the greatest sin in BBQing – you’ve ALLOWED the gas bottle to run out. This unforgiveable incident is punishable by public stoning in some countries and rightly so. YOU are the BBQ host. YOU are responsible for ensuring that everything has been ticked off – steaks, snags, drinks, novelty BBQ apron, gas. It’s not hard. You’ve let yourself down. To prevent this horrendous situation ever occurring again, a second (full) gas bottle

should be seared on both sides before being transferred to the grill for the actual cooking. Thin cuts of meat such as hamburgers or bacon, along with eggs, onions and tomatoes are at home on the hot plate. Certain foods have their rightful cooking surface on a BBQ. That’s just the way things are. Wok burner – seriously? Has anyone ever been to a BBQ and actually seen the wok burner in use? Other than a resting place for tongs or a drink, the BBQ wok burner is about as useful as a carpet layers ladder. If you’re

cooking a delicious beef and black bean or a special fried rice on the BBQ, a bit of time in the room of mirrors might be needed because you’ve clearly missed the point of what a BBQ should be used for. You don’t see the skilled chefs at your favorite Thai or Chinese restaurant tossing fresh vegetables around a wok on a BBQ do you, so it stands to reason that a wok burner on a backyard barbie is clearly out of place. Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to use it. That’s just the way things are. Your BBQ – your rules Even though we’ve discussed some basic BBQ etiquette above, there is one absolutely overriding rule when it comes

to the great Aussie barbie. The bloke cooking the BBQ is king. He need not hear your opinions. He does not want your advice. His methods are unquestionable and should remain that way until he asks for your suggestions. Whilst highly unusual that the BBQ chef will ask for advice, if it happens, his query almost without exception will be directed to the second in charge - his trusted second mate. This 2IC is invariably a competent BBQ chef in his own right and should the gathering have taken place at his house, with his barbie, he would assume the rightful role of BBQ king. The unwritten rule states that the second mate is the only person besides the BBQ chef who is authorised to handle the BBQ

utensils or attend to any cooking duties. This rare occurrence will generally only take place if the BBQ chef requires a pit stop and it’s at this time that the second mate assumes temporary control of the BBQ from the captain. That’s just the way things are. Whilst summer is technically behind us now and the warmer weather starts to subside, that doesn’t signal the end of BBQ lunches and dinners. Indeed, the barbie has become a year round cooking and social avenue for tens of thousands of Australians; each with their own way of cooking, each with their own set of unique BBQ rules.

PROJECT FOCUS: IN THE SWIM OF THINGS t was way back in 1920 that Alfred Gerard developed an adjustable, one size ‘clips all’ metal conduit fitting and gave birth to a company known as Clipsal. More than 90 years on and Clipsal by Schneider remains a household name in Australian and New Zealand whilst making it’s mark around the globe.

AUSLEC www.auslec.com.au

Much has changed from the early days of last century; the range of products, the number of staff and the diversity of projects could only ever have been dreamt of back then.

24

One such diverse project undertaken by Clipsal by Schneider is the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC) in Oaklands Park. This premier state-of-the-art indoor aquatics facility is the main competition and training venue for swimming, diving and water polo in South Australia. The venue was also chosen to host the 2012 Australian Swimming Championships as part of the London Olympic Games preselection criteria. The unique environment of the SAALC means that any installation requires a certain level of resistance to humidity, moisture and common pool chemicals. To cater for this and provide a safe, secure environment, Clipsal by Schneider were tasked with providing a total electrical solution - with a strong emphasis on high quality products, including rust proof fibreglass and stainless steel items compliant to IP56 water and dust ratings. Funded by the SA Government in association with the City of Marion and the Federal Government, the $100 million development is managed by the YMCA. Much more than just a swimming pool, the SAALC features 52m and 55m swimming pools, a hydraulically operated diving platform, two water slides, dedicated recreational and fitness areas, a community gym, café and parking for 560 cars. “We consider the centre to be the most modern and advanced swimming

facility in the world”, says Hugh Day, Systems Manager at the YMCA. Two command rooms where swimmer’s times are recorded and public address equipment is housed are fitted with Clipsal’s cable management range of skirting duct to carry power and data cabling to the desks in a professional and clean manner. Adjacent to this is an area where Clipsal’s range of pop-up outlet boxes house additional power and data connections which are utilised when media are on site. When not required, this equipment retracts discreetly to the floor and out of the way. Clipsal’s industrial 56 Series switched socket outlets have been installed poolside for cleaning equipment and to provide additional power for media cameras and equipment for televised events. 56 Series switched socket outlets are also installed near the grandstand to provide power for additional food and beverage vendors who are bought in for major events. To meet the energy efficient requirements of the aquatic centre, a Clipsal C-Bus lighting control system was installed. Via a Clipsal touch screen, the system allows employees to manually adjust the levels of

artificial lighting over the main pool area and therefore save power when natural light levels are adequate. Lighting scenes have also been programmed for specific uses based on International Swimming Federation requirements. Located adjacent to the aquatic centre is the GP Plus Health Care Centre. This facility was built in conjunction with the SAALC to help people avoid hospital by managing chronic illnesses. It includes dental services, counseling, speech pathology, mental health and allied services such as podiatry, physiotherapy and nutrition. To meet AS 3003 guidelines which specify standards for electrical installations in hospitals and medical practices, Clipsal’s Health Solutions products were installed including coloured socket outlets, power availability indication and RCD protected socket outlets. The SAALC employed ‘world’s best’ at every phase of the development and it takes the world’s best organisations to partner on a project of this size. In this instance, Clipsal by Schneider proved that they’re not just world class in name; but world class in practice too.

supporting mine safety

Your Site, our Solution

28

The Mine Electrical Safety Association (MESA) will be conducting their 24th annual conference from Wednesday 26th to Friday 28th in June this year. To be held at the Pullman King George Square Hotel in Brisbane, the conference has for over twenty years, been an integral conduit between the working face of the mining industry. Stakeholders including suppliers and government departments come together in identifying electrical safety issues and by consultation, provide information with a view to improving safety and productivity within Australia’s mining industry. The formation of MESA was the first of its kind in Queensland. The association was established well before the intense industry focus on safety that we (rightly) see today. From very humble beginnings, the conference has grown to be a ‘must attend’ annual event that attracts many of the industries key figures as Lionel Smith, Chair of MESA explains. “At the first conference, which was held at Blackwater mine in central Queensland, we literally had just a handful of delegates attend. There were essentially a few mining technicians that got together and discussed some of the issues surrounding electrical safety within their own workplaces. Fast forward 24 years and we will have over 300 delegates from all aspects of mining attend this

year’s conference including contractors, suppliers, mine management and mining engineers”. Having established itself as the premier electrical mining safety conference in Queensland, the MESA conference now attracts attendees from all over the country. “We work very hard on bringing in quality, authoritative speakers who are experts in their respective fields”, says Lionel. “It means that our delegates are exposed to current issues and solutions pertaining to electrical safety specific to their industry. I’m sure that’s one of the reasons why the conference has become as successful as it has”. The event brings together Government departments, consultants, suppliers and key industry decision makers within the electrical field to hear these technical presentations on all matters relating to electrical safety within the mining industry. This year, topics to be discussed include Earthing, Lightning Protection, Variable Speed Drives and Maintenance Practices & Processes. Auslec is putting its full weight of support behind the MESA conference as a sponsor and Greg Miller, National Manager – Mining says they are proud to be associated with the event. “We see a very clear alignment in what MESA are doing with the conference and the values that we hold as a supplier to the

mining industry. MESA foster and promote discussion around best practices and this is something that at Auslec, we fully endorse. There is no reason why every aspect of our mining industry shouldn’t be implementing or indded creating the worlds benchmark and to do this, the sharing and dissemination of information is critical”. Aligned with this year’s conference, a trade exhibition for the benefit of delegates will showcase products and solutions from suppliers to the mining industry. “The exhibition has become an important component to the overall event in recent years”, says Lionel. “It allows our delegates to actually discuss solutions with suppliers that may relate directly to a topic that they’ve just sat through at the conference. It’s a bit like the theory and the practice coming together”. Whilst MESA’s crowning achievement is no doubt the continued development of this annual conference and trade exhibition, the association has also focused on other issues such as the safety related issues of hand held meters for electrical testing and welding safety. “As an association, we feel we can play a big part in providing Australia’s mining industry with information and direction on a number of issues”, says Lionel. “It’s about creating discussion and learning from one another to help make our industry as safe as possible”.

Reliable short circuit & backup protection By virtue of their precise operating characteristics HRC fuse links can provide protection to devices of inherent low breaking capability such as motor starters and miniature circuit breakers.

Fuse links offer many advantages for the industrial customer looking for circuit protection. Having been developed over the past 80 years to provide effective circuit protection for specific applications, fuse links can be used in a myriad of situations ranging from cable & equipment protection, motor starting, semiconductor protection, arc flash protection and even in medium voltage applications.

Accurate discrimination Protective devices are commonly used in series with one another to provide discrimination. Because of their nature, HRC fuse links will discriminate with each other more readily and reliably than other protective devices. Typically they will discriminate with a ratio of 1.6:1 between major and minor current ratings.

Not prone to three phase tripping Distribution protection applications in our supply networks mostly rely on fuse links. Moulded case circuit breakers will trip out all three phases under fault conditions therefore inconveniencing more customers than is necessary. Fuse links provide a clear benefit in these applications by operating only where and when required.

As far as low voltage applications are concerned, industrial fuse links are invariably used in the area of motor starting and distribution. Fuses that comply to IEC269 standards are ideally suited to motor starting and motor starter protection. The primary reasons for the wide spread use and application of HRC fuses in todays industrial markets can be summarised as follows: High breaking capacity & energy limitation In the event of a short circuit, fault energy is severely restricted and contained by the rapid operation of the HRC fuse link. This results in limiting the amount of damage to equipment, risk of fire and danger to personnel as a result of arc flashing.

Low over-current protection HRC fuse links of type gG to BS88 and IEC269 will provide close excess overcurrent protection and enable maximum utilisation of PVC cables and their associated equipment. Proven non deterioration When properly applied, HRC fuse links have a virtually indefinite lifespan. They contain no moving parts to jam up or wear out and examination of typical ‘in
