PUBLISHER'S Letter

Let today be the day you learn the grace of letting go and the power of moving on. - Steve Maraboli For the past four and a half years, I have had the pleasure of crafting and publishing Lavish Living Magazine. At the age of twenty-seven, I went out on a limb and committed my entire life to the start of this new business. Perhaps not fully understanding what this would entail, I ran with the good ol' American idea of entrepreneurship and didn't look back. Forty issues later, it’s unfortunately time to say good-bye and close this chapter of Lavish. Although this is an incredibly heartbreaking decision, looking back I would not change a single thing. Launching this magazine has been the highlight and honor of my life. Serving the communities and spotlighting the best of our local people and businesses, providing a vehicle for our talented writers, photographers, makeup artists and models, has been endless inspiration and continual motivation to keep pressing forward. Capturing our local craft and stories and displaying them in a gorgeous aesthetic I believe was unsurpassed by any other local magazine, I felt was what the area deserved. We shined a light on what makes this area so special to live and visit, and for that I am extremely proud. Today is a day to celebrate our existence and not mourn the passing of our publication. None of this would have been possible without the support and loyalty of our advertisers. Many have been part of this publication from the beginning; some from issue one. And, it goes without saying you were all an invaluable part to the success and duration of our magazine. For that, I am overwhelmingly grateful to them and I hope that all our readers will acknowledge and seek out these amazing people and businesses who chose to keep their marketing dollars local and supporting a fellow community based business. I am pleased to announce our publication made a small splash in a very big pond. Nationally recognized four years running, it is incredibly bitter sweet to report we have again been selected as a finalist for two Maggie Awards in the categories of Best Lifestyles and Alternative Lifestyles Publication for the October 2016 edition and Best Editorial Layout for our May 2016 edition of "The Art Pack." We will find out the results in Los Angeles later in April and I have to say that this is truly the cherry on top of the incredible ride over the past four years. Personally, Lavish has become a part of my identity; some even refer to me as 'Lavish' and not Lauren! I cannot fully express my deep gratitude to everyone involved – almost too many to name – who, from day one put their personal stamp on this publication. Beela Shaikh, Tim Engle, Dan Hood, David Martinez, Don and Ann Jackson, Nick Dedier, Brinkley Maine, Matt Kramer and Jeff Woodworth, I thank you for the multiple years of dedication you have so graciously given to this magazine. These individuals and myeslf have poured our heart and souls into every page, every shoot, every article, every photo selection, every editing meeting, every party, every client and every letter of every issue. No one is as disappointed as I am to come to this conclusion, however no one is as proud to have produced this truly unique publication for Sacramento and the surrounding region. As we conclude this chapter, I will be the first to say this will not be the last you see of 'Lavish'. I look forward to the many opportunities that lie ahead and one day continue to serve this incredible region with a standard of quality that represents this amazing community. As always, thank you one final time for your loyal readership. See you all again in the future!

LAVISH on LOCALS LOL

Can you dig it? CAN CAN COCKTAILS BRINGS CRAFT BEVERAGES TO THE CAN  BY MATT KRAMER | # PHOTOS CORUSCATING IMAGES

What do you think of when you hear ‘canned cocktails?’ Chances are the image conjures something less than classy – perhaps a cheap way to get drunk or a guilty pleasure, equivalent to binge watching a trashy TV show in drink form. Well it’s time to rethink the canned cocktail. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | FINAL ISSUE 2017

15

LOL lavish on locals Ryan Seng wants you to associate Can Can Cocktails with phrases like “artist crafted, all natural, and never too sweet.” Seng has found a way to capture the art of craft cocktail making, cultivated through his experiences at Grange as head bartender, and over 12 years of bartending experience in Sacramento’s Farm to Fork and Farm to Glass Scene. Can Can Cocktails brings this craft perfection to convenient sipping, utterly reinventing the canned cocktail.    While working as the head bartender at Grange, and doing small bottled cocktails, Seng was struck with an idea.    “The restaurant would be so busy we’d be making big batches of things just to keep up,” Ryan said. “Then I started thinking, it’d be really fun to have a good cocktail in a can.”    Ryan admitted the territory had a lot of weeds to pull. Re-inventing the canned cocktail and transforming it into something that someone would actually want to drink would be no easy task. Canned cocktails do not have a good reputation.

“Going into it I knew the obstacles,” Seng said. “The old vision of canned cocktails is kind of creepy, gross – they’re usually overly sweet artificially flavored. So I’m coming at it with natural ingredients, and real spirits. A lot of the options out there like Mike’s Hard Lemonade, it’s all malt beverage...it’s kind of gross. I designed these so I would buy them off a shelf. I would look at them (examine the ingredients) and then you know it’s real.”   After the initial idea Seng ran a KickStarter campaign to garner initial funding. After running an ad on television he joined up with business partner Patrick O’Neill. Together they perfected the vision, and the response was tremendous. “We sold out of our first run in a week,” Seng said. “We made 98 cases that first run.”    The following week they had made 190 cases, and each subsequent month the number has been growing. “We’re only second to Coors Light or bottled water,” Seng said with ever so slight hyperbole. The art of the can itself is integral to the final product, much like Seng’s own career which

he said has run parallel to his art life. All Can Can Cocktails art is done by Seng. From inside to outside Can Can Cocktails delivers a crafted, detail oriented product.    With multiple flavors and options to choose from, Seng said his current favorite is the Boar’s Bourbon Root Beer, just released last December, which is topped off with a touch of Angostura Bitters.   Can Can Cocktails made inroads at the Golden 1 Center with the opening Paul McCartney concert last year, and have since become a growing feature of Sacramento area provisions.    Can Can Cocktails can be found at the Golden 1 Center, Grange Restaurant and Bar, Nugget Markets, La Rivera, B-Side Bar, Curtis Park Market, Sail Inn Grotto & Bar, and Burgers and Brew. REAL ESTATE TECHNOLOGY

Realtor.com® recently unveiled Sign Snap™ and Street Peek™ features for retrieving instant home details on your Smartphone.    Image recognition and augmented reality technologies create an easier and faster way for consumers to obtain details on the homes and neighborhoods they love at the touch of a button or two. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | FINAL ISSUE 2017

LOL lavish on locals    On January 17th, Realtor. com® announced that Sign SnapTM and Street PeekTM would be incorporated into the mobile app. These two new patent-pending features on the realtor.com® app will make getting information convenient and hassle-free.   The Android real estate app uses image recognition technologies and augmented reality to deliver property details and price data with just a few taps on your phone. The realtor. com® app serves the rapidly growing community of consumers who search for the home of their dreams on the go. Operated by News Corp subsidiary Move, Inc, the Sign SnapTM feature, available today, works by using image recognition technologies, as well as the smartphone’s camera and GPS capabilities. Users are able to snap a photo of a real estate for-sale or forrent sign they happen to be near and the Sign SnapTM feature will search the entire realtor.com® property database for a match. Realtor.com® is one of the most comprehensive inventories of for-sale listings among competing national sites. With the app, users can view related information for that property such as photos, property details, price data, open house dates and more. Users can conveniently share desired listings with family and friends via email, text message and social media.    Realtor.com® plans to roll out its Street PeekTM feature this Spring. This special feature will allow users to pan a neighborhood street and, via augmented reality capabilities, instantaneously surface property details about homes on that street and in the realtor.com® database whether or not they are for sale. Simply frame a home or group of homes with the smartphones camera and experience a real world view of the environment with information overlays from the realtor.com® database. Information such as the listing or rental price, the recently sold price, estimated value, and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms will be available on the framed properties. Users can tilt the screen to view a map of 24

the neighborhood and access additional perspective on what’s nearby, or tap the displayed info card to obtain more details. Filtering options are also available to let users locate specific property types. Users will be able to search their history of street photos and listings previously viewed in the case they decide to come back to it later.   “Finding the perfect home can be a stressful experience. That’s why we are continuing to optimize our mobile

experience with first-to-market features that support consumers throughout the home buying process, making it as simple and stress-free as possible,” said Nate Johnson, realtor.com® Chief Marketing Officer. “In a market where actionable information can make all the difference between landing a dream home or losing it, we are empowering consumers with an app that provides quick, accessible property information in the palm of their hands.”

The Sign SnapTM equipped realtor. com® app for Android can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. Additional features, including Street PeekTM, are scheduled to be available on Android in the Spring of this year, and iOS availability is scheduled to follow. Both Sign SnapTM and Street PeekTM are patent-pending features of the realtor.com® Android real estate app. FEATURED HOME: 263 Powers Drive, El Dorado Hills

3 Ways to Wear a Little Black Dress  BY BRINKLEY MAINE

Once stated from top fashion designer, artist and photographer Karl Lagerfeld, “one is never over-dressed or under-dressed with a little black dress.” Fashion is ever-changing with its transient culture and history of vibrant generations, fads, icons and trends. However, there are few staples that will remain imperishable. And the little black dress is one of them. Here are three ways to rock one of the most-treasured fashion statements of all time.

THE SLIP DRESS:

Easy to dress up and dress down. The slip dress is a must-have. Pair this piece with a long necklace, bangle and heels for a night on the town or a moto jacket and booties for a casual date! PICTURED:

When you’re looking for something a little more formal. The pencil dress is ideal for weddings, work events, dinner parties and dates. This dress says it all. PICTURED:

Sacramento Fashion Week 2017 BREANNA BEYERS Gorgeous, gracious and a go-getter are three of many applicable words to describe model Breanna Beyers. Not only is Breanna super fun to work with and totally down to earth, her looks, style and grace grab the attention of everyone around her.    In a recent shoot with Lavish, Breanna rocked up with a huge smile, laugh to love and positive presence. Her willingness to do things that not a lot of people can handle (wearing almost nothing in the freezing cold) and ambition for her modeling career are a big part of Breanna’s genuine persona. Sacramento Fashion Week is in for a treat, as they have chosen a true gem.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST FASHION RUNWAY EXPERIENCE AND HOW WAS IT?

My first fashion runway experience was with Sac Fashion Week in 2014 when I was chosen to walk for Rebecca Cahua and Maish Bahati. I was so nervous about falling on the run way that my first time down during the show I basically ran I was strutting so fast. I don’t think they even got photos of the look because I rushed so much. But besides being nervous it was one of the most exciting things I had experienced and immediately wanted to do more. I really gained a passion for the fashion industry after getting to talk to the designers and h&mua’s (hair and makeup artists) behind the scenes and their process for making their art come to life. And I loved being a part of that.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER SAC FASHION WEEK? MODELING?

My introduction to SFW was though Facebook, they were having a model call and a friend of mine knew I was interested in getting into modeling and forwarded me the post.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL DESIGNER AND WHY?

Frances Wright, her drive and passion for fashion continue to inspire me and she has always been so kind and so giving and that’s so important to me too.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

If I had to describe my personal style in one word, it would be Metaphysical. Quality and versatility is what I look for in every day wardrobe. And for more formal looks, I always look to classic styles.

WHO IS YOUR IDOL? SOMEONEYOU LOOK UP TO?

I used to, and will forever look up to Madonna. She’s a wild child but so kind at heart, and I love that.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

People inspire me. People with true passion (for anything) and people who challenge their own potential to do better are my biggest inspirations.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

I plan to go to my full potential in this industry, from modeling to commercial to acting. I want to do it all.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

In my free time my first choice is to hit the gym. Being physically fit means a lot to me and is also a huge staple in this industry. After that without a doubt is spending time with family and loved ones.

WHAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO YOU IN YOUR CAREER? Never quit, and always be gracious.

Believe it or not, but your partner doesn’t always want to “Netflix and Chill.” It’s time to switch out those sweatpants and smart TV’s this season for some refreshing and riveting date ideas.    As we all know and have probably experienced first-hand, dating can be an adventure in itself. It can be a confusing experience trying to pair up attraction with imagination with reality with fun. But, it doesn’t have to always be so unnerving. Tradition has its place, however it may be time to change it up from the Friday night dinner and a movie ordeal. Whether your relationship is in inauguration or you share the same cup of coffee every morning, here are 21 different dates that bring excitement to any relationship.

The best way to get to know someone: travel with them. Before accidentally stepping on the fast forward button and committing to a multiday, long-haul travel vacation, try out a road trip. Getting to know someone outside of your normal environments can speak largely about a person. Traveling almost never goes exactly to plan. How does your partner handle weather, social scenes, accidents, miscommunications, mishaps, directions?

Do you both trickle down the beaten path or look to make a plan of action? Maybe you want someone who reacts different than you, offers up something new, a different way of looking at things. Or maybe you can’t stand the idea of being with an antonym to your laid out life. Regardless, seeing the world never hurts. And lucky us, as we have some of the best treks in our own backyard. HIGHWAY 1 TO BIG SUR: Depending on your style of travel, grab your tent or hotel reservation and hit the road! Off the Coast of Monterey County and iconic drive down the Highway 1, lies one of California’s most beautiful destinations, Big Sur. Make sure and dress warm and pack extra blankets as the California Coast can get pretty frigid. Plan to leave early in the morning as the drive can take anywhere from 3-5 hours. There are several route options for getting to Big Sur depending on your choice of scenery and timetable. Plan to stay the weekend as there are plenty of hikes, beaches and restaurants to check out. The blanketed lush greenery, mountain-filled background and clear blue Pacific 44

TRAVEL Coronado

 BY DON AND ANN JACKSON

SAN DIEGO COUNTY’S CROWN JEWEL

50

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | FINAL ISSUE 2017

We always love heading to the San Diego area where the weather rarely disappoints and the multitude of possible activities is excitingly anticipated. Our country’s eighth largest city, with an invigorating downtown, gaslight and marina areas and nearby destinations like La Jolla, Del Mar and Mission Bay, offers many world class hotels and resorts. And as much as we’ve enjoyed visiting and staying in all those areas, our inclination is to think first about making reservations on Coronado. And why not? Even though it’s just a short drive, ferry trip or water taxi from downtown you’ll feel a million miles removed from the traffic, hustle and bustle of this major megalopolis called San Diego.

WHERE TO STAY:

There are four diverse lodging choices we’ve stayed at on recent trips and can enthusiastically recommend. When thinking of Coronado, the first hotel that comes to mind is the resplendent and renowned Hotel Del Coronado overlooking the ocean, a true legend in the tourism universe. For an almost overwhelming wealth of info on this 750 room historic treasure check out their website at: www.hoteldel.com. If you’d prefer a newer full service resort, the Coronado Island Marriott Resort and Spa on the bay side overlooking downtown San Diego with 300 rooms and suites, will be a no-brainer pick. Recently upgraded accommodations, a brand new luxury spa and the addition

Hotel Del Coronado

of four designated Pickleball courts blew us away. This fast growing tennis-like sport is just beginning to show up around the country as a popular resort amenity. www.marriott. com/coronado Do you prefer smaller boutique hotels? If so, the Glorietta Bay Inn across the street from “the Del” should definitely pique your interest. John Spreckles’ mansiononce the home to the famous sugar baron, financial entrepreneur and philanthropist-is the centerpiece of this 100 room property.

Complimentary scrumptious breakfasts, stunning ambience and comp parking are hallmarks. www.gloriettabayinn.com For those readers who prefer a smaller B & B type inn with a more homelike vibe, you’ll be enthralled by the 1906 Lodge. Although it’s also a historic building it has been painstakingly enlarged and modernized in recent years with incredible architectural and construction brilliance.

51

TRAVEL Coronado Moderate prices, delectable breakfasts, afternoon light refreshments, freshly baked daily cookies, and gated underground parking are featured. www.1906lodge.com

WHERE TO DINE:

Restaurants at the “Del” include 1500 Ocean and the Shearwater and both were exceptional, but for that special occasion outing 1500 Ocean would be the clear choice of the two. Sunday brunch in the majestic Crown Room is considered a tradition by many San Diegans. Current Restaurant at the Marriott celebrates fresh farmto-table ingredients and breathtaking views of the San Diego skyline. Other restaurants in town to consider: Candela’s by the Bay serving savory Mexican fare and Peohe’s featuring creative Pacific Rim cuisine are both located at the Ferry Landing with great bay views; Brigantine is a well known dining spot and local’s hangout for best happy hours; Bluewater Boathouse is a historic edifice, built one year before the “Del” in 1887 matching the Victorian architectural ambience and noted for their fresh seafood. There are more than 70 more restaurants and cafes in this small town so lots of mouth watering options will entice.

Hotel Del Coronado

WHAT TO SEE AND DO:

Our favorite thing to do in Coronado is to walk the amazingly wide and usually uncrowded 28 miles of beaches that often sparkle due to their mica mineral content. The San Diego area has long been referred to as the outdoor recreation capital of the United States and Coronado can provide many of the sports activities that might be included on the area’s

master list. A beautiful 18 hole championship municipal golf course alongside Glorietta Bay awaits the avid golfers and over 15 miles of dedicated paths are available for ardent bicyclists. Other activities on this small 5 square miles of island bliss include: all types of boating; water sports; tennis; lawn bowling; swimming in their municipal pool; jogging; roller blading; a state-of-theart skate board park and much more. And if you feel the absolute need to escape to a more cosmopolitan setting, world famous attractions and museums are just a few miles away in San Diego: the San Diego Zoo has been lauded as the best on the planet and numerous other fine museums can also be found in Balboa Park, one of the largest and most beautiful center-of-thecity-parks known to man. www.sandiegozoo.org Sea World in nearby Mission

Bay area is another first rate attraction for families. www. seaworld.com    Before flying or driving off, be sure to check the following web sites for essential pre-planning: www. c o r o n a d o v i s i t o r c e n t e r. com- for all things Coronado; and www.sandiego.org- for everything you need to know about the entire county. Both are easy to navigate sites and can provide detailed information on events, lodging, dining, activities, shopping, attractions, etc and can lead you to many appropriate links that will enhance your stay. (PUBLISHERS NOTE: in our next issue our travel team will bring our readers their recommendations on enjoyable getaways to the beautiful city of Monterey featuring their historic downtown and Fisherman’s Wharf)

Farmhaus

FRESH Farmhaus creates simple, delicious, fresh American food in Granite Bay  BY MATT KRAMER | # PHOTOS DAN HOOD

Sip & Savor

The appetizing sizzle of meat, the colorful and elegant preparation of sea food and fresh local fruits and vegetables come together at Farmhaus to make a dining experience worth repeating in Granite Bay. Chef Michael John and owner Madeline Faeth have created a neighborhood hub of exquisite cuisine in suburban Placer County.    Farmhaus has been at 8230 Auburn Folsom Road in Granite Bay for three years, recently celebrating its third year in January; but owner, Madeline, brings a lifetime of experience to the table. LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | FINAL ISSUE 2017

55

SIP & Savor

Working in the restaurant business since she was 15, Madeline started out at The Galleon in Sacramento, owned by her uncle. From there it was a climb into the restaurant industry through management and bartending jobs including at prestigious establishments like Paragary’s.   With Farmhaus, Madeline said, she was looking for something different and new. Famhaus combines a passion for flavor with a love of community.   “We source locally,” Madeline said. “In the beginning stages I was literally driving around places like Flower Farm and Delta Farm right here in my own little neighborhood, picking things up before we really got busy. We source as local as we can.”    As Farmhaus has grown, Chef Michael John now selects the ingredients; and combines them into delicacies to dazzling effect.

With brunch, lunch, and dinner offerings Farmhaus includes too many items to list in a single article, but for starters Baked Sierra Nevada Goat Cheese, Sizzling Prawns, seasonal Fall Gnocchi, and craft salads all make their appearance.    Madeline’s own favorites include the Seafood Stew dinner option which combines mussels, clams, prawns, fish chorizo, potato, tomato, shallots, garlic, and madeira in a delectable high-end confection. A heartier offering she said might be the Chicken Breast Pot Roast Au Jus, which includes locally sources brussels sprouts, butternut squash, aromatic herbs, and mashed-in-haus potatoes. She also recommends the fish of the day.    Farmhaus includes an accessibly priced wine list, selected from vintners and vinyards that inspire the staff. Like the

menu, the wine list adapts to the seasons, and Madeline tries to pass the flavors – and savings – on to Farmhaus’ patrons.   “(The wine list) is always evolving as well,” Madeline said. “We change it kind of as we go, with wine tastings, to find new favorites in spring, summer, fall and winter. The wine prices are amazing. I like to keep the prices down, because I like to pass the savings on to the customers.”   Of course the best way to find out about Farmhaus is to partake of its fare. Along with their food and drink options, Farmhaus creates an aesthetic of community and unique ambience.   “(Our goal is) to bring the community together,” Madeline said. “We actually changed the name four or five times before we opened; Farmhaus, in the logo, looked pretty cool – its not German food, its American, but we liked the uniqueness of the logo when it was said and done.”   Farmhaus operates Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a happy hour running from 3 to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. MORE INFORMATION ALONG WITH A FULL MENU AND WINE LIST CAN BE FOUND AT:

SIP & Savor DINING OUT WITH NICK

Make

my day  BY NICK DEDIER

NICK DEDIER

I have been writing this recurring article for nearly two years. In that time I have shared tips on getting the best value for your dollar, tricks on finding the best places to eat, ideas on celebrating and even a few opinions on more political issues like children in restaurants and minimum wage. Yet this month I would like to engage the element of what I feel produces a universally truly great hotel, restaurant or retail experience.    If you interviewed a thousand people and polled them on their opinion, I believe that some of them would say food, some would say service, some would say drinks some would say atmosphere. While all of these things are very 58

important in their own right I would argue that none of them produce an incredible all around experience. The common thread effecting and either elevating or crippling our experiences is hidden in plain sight. The key is our own attitude.   Ever just have one of those days where everything seems to come up roses? Good night’s sleep, great breakfast, found $20 in the dryer, a high five from the boss, lunch hour with friends, dinner plans for your favorite restaurant... you know, a truly great day? There is only one common thread running through all of your daily experiences; you. Greatness is infectious and it snowballs. Our own attitudes and outlook on life can not only inspire and elevate our own day but can also truly make, or similarly break, the day of others you encounter.    About a decade ago I was running a fairly well known restaurant and there were two couples at the bar. Both couples were about the same age, nicely dressed and obviously celebrating something; the first couple was kind and engaging while the other was cold, entitled and quite frankly rude to the staff. Each couple received (if I may say so) top notch stellar service but lopsided warmth and attention that was bestowed upon the kind couple was fairly noticeable to everyone including the other couple. As the night was winding down the kind couple left and everyone shook hands, thanked them and held the door as they departed. Behind them the second couple departed and stopped me at the door. The woman asked me in a very insulting manner “Were those two regulars? What made them so important?” my reply was simple “Oh, no, we just met them this evening. Lovely people. Guests like that are a diamond

LAVISH LIVING MAGAZINE | FINAL ISSUE 2017

in the rough. They were kind to every staff member, truly enjoyed our work and were thankful for their experience. Serving guests like that really makes our day”.    So go ahead, I dare you; make my day. While I am, and countless millions of others in our country are, the service professionals whose vocation is centered around creating and curating the pleasure of our guests I will dare you again... Change the game. Tip the scales.

Make my day. As a guest or retail customer you would be surprised at what the elusive currency of a free smile or a simple thank you from our customers and guests do for us. To hospitality professionals these little gestures are all like little unsolicited sunshine draped happy little islands in a vast tumultuous sea of grumpiness where service is more of a Master / Servant

relationship instead of a Guest / Host relationship. And trust me, we all prefer a little sunny island over swimming in a cold stormy sea.   Service is a task. GREAT service is a relationship, Hospitality is an art that is built on that relationship. So whether you’re at the Four Seasons, Ruffhaus, Early Toast or Target indulge me and give it a

whirl. Beat them to the punch and smile at the first person that assists you, thank them for the time they spent helping you. SIP & Savor SEASON DELIGHT

crab SEASON DELIGHT

 BY MEAGAN DENNIN

Whether you’re preparing it as a delicious appetizer, dishing up a salad, or serving is as the main course, crab will always be appreciated as a special treat. Prehistoric remains inform us that crab has been consumed since early civilizations and the desire for it has not slowed down. There are many different varieties of crab that are edible including blue crab, soft-shell crab, Dungeness crab, king crab, stone crab, and snow crab. When choosing a meal to prepare, be sure to do some research and find what crab variety is available to best suit your dish. Take advantage of services offered by your local grocer to clean the crab before bringing it home. In addition to being a tender, delectable morsel, crab also has many health benefits. Crab is a great source of protein that is also low in fat and caloric content. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids that aid the heart by balancing cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure 60

and lowering strain on the heart. Omega-3 fatty acids also work to fight inflammation. Crab is also high in selenium, which stimulates the body’s immune system and works as an antioxidant protecting cells, which may in turn reduce the risk of cancer. It is packed with vitamin B2, which helps the body produce energy, maintains the nervous system, and promotes healthy skin, liver, hair, and eyes. Crab is high in copper working to absorb iron, which produces red blood cells. This in turn aids and increases the circulation of blood in the body. The phosphorus found in crab is used for many metabolic processes of the body including cell growth and also helps to develop strong bones. The great taste of crab, health benefits, and numerous ways it can be prepared should have you headed to the store inspired to enjoy this seasonal delight.

LE CHARENTON RESTAURANT

A childhood interest in the culinary arts stemmed Chef, Steven Long’s remarkable career and passion for being in the kitchen. Coming from a foodie family, it was hard for Long to not absolutely love the business. With a family background including opening up the first trading post, the first supermarket in California and being apart of a renowned butchery, Long was immersed early on. Upon graduating from the California Culinary Academy, catering to some of the most prominent names in history and instructing classes at Le Cordon Bleu, Long decided to open up a restaurant. Though Long has worked in the industry for most of his life, this was the very first dining endeavor that was his very own. Upon getting inspiration from sites of France, Long brought his obsession for fine food, wine and an elegant experience to Folsom. Long describes opening his own restaurant as “crazy, exciting, overwhelming, frustrating, tiring and energizing.” Le Charenton is a charming and quaint establishment in the heart of our very own Folsom, California. The name, which was influenced by a well-known asylum in France,

gave meaning to this new business idea. “Of course you have to be crazy to be a restaurant owner,” says Long. “It takes a type of lunacy born in an obsession for bringing pleasure to people through food.” Having won the wine spectator award, Long describes how he tastes a lot of wine he gets “smitten with.” From my personal favorite, Stags Leap to Kistler to Rochioli, this place has tons to choose from! As a big part of the community, Long encourages locals to come in and experience Le Charenton. Long reminds us that Le Charenton is about “coming for the experience, that’s what I want. The food and wine is approachable, not ultra-expensive and very inviting.” With live music, a charismatic staff, delicious food and great wine, Le Charenton is an extraordinary experience welcoming all walks of life.”

ETIQUETTE final thoughts

FROM a GENTLEMAN;

ADVICE forLADIES  BY ANONYMOUS

Three tips to consider…for those in the torturous, confusing, amazing yet frustrating world of dating.

1

Why is the effort that you spend on looking fabulous not matched, even fractionally, by your date? There is nothing more mind-boggling than to see an attractive well put together lady walking down the street, doting on some species of homo sapiens who could never be considered a gentleman. Track pants and a hoodie do not accessorize your riding boots, tight jeans, cute sweater and brilliant accessories. He really needs to work harder to be your arm candy.

2

I’ll never understand why some of the younger ladies put up with men who act like boys and submerge themselves in video games. I believe that ya’ll are all looking for a gentleman, so find someone who enjoys reading over being a soldier in “Modern Warfare 3”.

3

Drink more bubbly, eat more oysters. There is nothing sexier than a woman sipping champagne. Plus you’ll scare off the guys who would rather get you free refills at the chips and salsa bar.
