Dear Graduates, As LAU commencement ceremonies begin to approach rapidly, mixed emotions begin to grip our university community; joy, to animate our souls; and a bit of chagrin, to touch our hearts. The famous Anthropologist Arnold Van Gennep termed commencement as a rite of passage, a cultural ritual that marks the passage of one person from one stage of life to the next, with new responsibilities to be faced, new adjustments to be made, and new apprehensions to be overcome.

As you prepare for your rite of passage and at the dawn of a new phase in your life, you are standing tall and fully prepared to meet any challenge. For it is at LAU, soon to be your Alma Mater, that you grew into mature human beings, internalized the best human values that set you free, gained the knowledge and the skills needed upon crossing the threshold of your real adult life, and earned an excellent education that will, according to B.F. Skinner, “remain with you when what you have learned is forgotten.”

After commencement, you will all be free to go your own way and, depending on the choice of career you will make, life will be different for each one of you. But with the education that you earned at LAU, you will create admirably your own lives. And as you take the world into your own hands, as John Updike said, “you cannot help but learn more” and become better and stronger people. I urge you to be wise in the choice of your next step. Find something meaningful that you like to do and go at it with faith, persistence, and burning passion, for with your solid education, your signal achievements, and versatile personalities, you “have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

Graduating from high school is one of them and paves the way to a yet grandiose platform that today you conquered in a most magnificent manner. This stage is a testimony to your presence, your strength and your ability and is your pathway to a prosperous life. You are now in control of your life, your decisions and your future.

It is at this stage that you can experience the true flavors of life. Learn from every possibility that comes across you and recognize that there will be failures and obstacles. Note that you will be making mistakes but these mistakes will pave the way to your future successes. The peak of success is so great that by the time you get a taste of it, you are on to your next challenge.

You will have naysayers at every corner, do not get discouraged. Be a good listener and learn from your peers and take note of every criticism, as this is your chance to become a better person. You can be one of those future world leaders in your industry, but it takes guts, challenges, down hills and a few bruises but if you believe you can, then you will be.

In this respect, the words of Alvin Toffler are quite pertinent: “The illiterates of the 21th Century are not those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” You will have to express your creativity and your innovative skills and talents to make appropriate decisions. The year 2011-2012 was eventful at the Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine as our inaugural class of medical students began clinical rotations at University Medical Center Rizk Hospital. Patients became the center of learning as medical students began to accept the responsibility and privilege of caring for patients. Patient needs underscored the value of the integrated curriculum whereby the knowledge of the medical and clinical sciences coupled with the ability to communicate effectively came together in clinical care. While students learned, around them, renovations brought a state of the art imaging center, renovated services and patient floors to UMC RH.

On the Byblos campus the preclinical classes expanded as we moved toward a full complement of students. The first and second year students inaugurated an exciting Medical Diagnostic Day which brought competition and fun to finding the correct diagnosis by teams of students. We watched in joyous anticipation at the construction of the new health sciences building with its state of the art learning spaces and a first class simulation center. Soon to be the home of the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing, this facility will encourage greater interaction among the faculty and students of these three schools. The new facility will accentuate our desire to have health professional students learn together as they will care for patients together in the future.

We, both faculty and students have been fortunate to have been given an extraordinary opportunity to be part of the first faculty and first classes of LAU Gilbert and RoseMarie Chagoury School of Medicine. For in these early years the role of the faculty and students working collaboratively is a truly unique experience which improves the quality of the medical program. Together we are pursuing our goal of educating the next generation of physicians who will be prepared to care for individuals and populations, research the problems of health and poised to make the changes needed to make Lebanon and beyond a healthier world.

Congratulations to all of you on your hard work and achievements. We look forward to another year of firsts as our final year students begin their electives at home and abroad and prepare for next spring and the first graduation of the LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine.

Laure Roukoz June 21, 2012 was a sad day for LAU when a beloved member of the Riyad Nassar Library passed away. The death of Laure Roukoz was really a shock to everyone, be it her family, friends, and the LAU community.

We knew she was ill but didn’t expect that she had so little time left.

Laure started her career at LAU as a part-time staff in the IWSAW 15 years ago.

Then she moved to the Riyad Nassar Library and worked as Administrative Assistant in several departments to settle finally in the Circulation Department.

She was a mother and a father for her two children: Hanadi and Tarek. She was continuously striving to offer them a good quality life and trying restlessly to secure a promising future in spite of the harsh conditions of her life.

Even though her loss left behind deep sorrow and agony in our hearts, we will always cherish the good times she had with her family, loved ones and colleagues.

May her soul rest in peace.
