August 13th. 2008 was as perfect as a day can be. It was the ideal day for the 13th. annual Albany Latin Festival. I arrived at the park around 9:00am to find that many of the vendors, volunteers and entertainers were already there.

El 13 de agosto del 2008 fue un día perfecto. Fue el día ideal para el Festival anual Latino de Albany. Llegué al parque alrededor de 9:00 am y encontré que muchos de los vendedores, voluntarios y animadores ya estaban allí.

The ritual began with getting your parking permit and driving to our designated spot. When at got there and started to set my tent and realized that the tarp was missing. I was not happy. It took me another hour to return with a new tent. By now the crowd of 200 people has grown to probably 2000 people. Navigating through this crowd was a little more challenging this time. It is now 11:00am. The setting up is now complete. Our booth was located strategically between a palm reader and the Alzheimer’s Association in an area that I call the information corridor because is the area assigned to individuals and organizations that are there to share information.

El ritual comenzó con obtener un permiso de estacionamiento y conducir hacia el lugar designado. Cuando comencé a ensamblar mi tienda de campana, reconocí que se me había perdido la carpa. Yo no estaba muy feliz. Me tomó una hora para volver con una nueva carpa. Cuando regrese, la multitud de 200 personas había crecido probablemente a más de 2000 personas. By noon, I am estimating that we had more than 7,000 people in the park. Some were getting restless because the expected entertainer had not arrived. The first act arrived very late and the second act never arrived. Nevertheless, the festival leaders were able to put together different activities that kept the participants happy and entertained until the headliners were to perform. At 3:00pm Mike Asencio introduced Andy Montanez and his orchestra to (in my unofficial estimation) more than 15,000 people. There were people there from as far as Buffalo, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. Although the Puerto Rican flag adorned most of the participants, flags of many other Latin American countries as well as the American flag were waved all over the park. As Andy Montanez started to sing, I was transported to another place at another time. I closed my eyes I found myself in the Bronx in the late 60s listening to a 45 being played in my friend Julio’s box at the corner of 157th Street and Melrose Ave. I turned to Dr. Jose Cruz who was standing next to me and I said. “I am going to close the booth. It does not get any better than this.” As Ismael Miranda closed the show the Albany Police Department crowd control unit came in riding horses and walking their dogs. A show of force that from my perspective was not necessary. But what do I know. Traditionally, the number 13 has negative connotations. This time it was quite the contrary. The Albany Latin Fest Committee out did themselves. The level of organization, the commitment to quality, the variety of activities and the number of participants demonstrates that these individuals know how to put together an event that should make us all proud to live in the Capital Region and to be Latino. Al mediodía, yo estimo que el número de personas en el parque pasaba los 7000. Algunos estaban inquietos porque la espera de los animadores. El primer acto llegó muy tarde y el segundo acto nunca llegó. Sin embargo, los dirigentes del festival fueron capaces de montar diferentes actividades las cuales pudieron mantener a los participantes felices y entretenidos hasta que el espectáculo primario llegara. A las 3:00 PM Mike Asencio presentó a Andy Montañés y su orquesta a (en mi estimación no oficial) a más de 15000 personas. Había gente allí de Buffalo, Filadelfia, Nueva York y Boston. El lugar estaba lleno de banderas de Puerto Rico adornado a la mayoría de los participantes. Banderas de muchos otros países de América Latina, así como la bandera americana se ondeaban en todo el parque. Cuando Andy Montañés comenzó a cantar, me traslado a otro lugar en otro momento. Cerré mis ojos me encontré en el Bronx al final de los anos 60 escuchando a un 45 que se tocaba en toca discos de mi amigo Julio en la esquina de la calle 157 y la avenida Melrose. Me dirigí al doctor José Cruz que estaba de pie junto a mí y le dije. “Yo voy a cerrar el stand. No hay nada mejor que esto. “ Cuando Ismael Miranda cerró el espectáculo la unidad de control de multitudes del Departamento de Policía de la ciudad de Albany llegó a caballo y a caminar sus perros. Una demostración de fuerza que, desde mi punto de vista no era necesario. Pero, ¿qué sé yo de estas cosas? Tradicionalmente, el número 13 tiene connotaciones negativas. Esta vez era todo lo contrario. El Comité del Albany Latin Fest hizo una labor por enzima de todo lo esperado. El nivel de organización, el compromiso con la calidad, la variedad de actividades y el número de participantes demuestra que estas personas saben cómo poner juntos un acontecimiento que debe hacer a todos nosotros orgullos de vivir en la Región Capital y de ser latinos. Honoring Our Latino Heritage

s Latinos, we certainly have many reasons to be proud of our heritage. We also have an obligation to share with our children the history, geography, language, food and literature of our people. Hispanic Heritage Month, held from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, not only ushers in a new school year, it also offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with our children the history and accomplishments of Latinos from all over the world. By celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with our children, you can share our hopes that they, too, can reach great heights and make positive contributions to life in the United States. There are more than 43 million Latinos in the United States, and our numbers are growing. But how many of our children know that many Hispanic-Americans trace their roots to the indigenous peoples of the Americas, including the Arawaks (Puerto Rico); the Aztecs (Mexico); the Incas (South America); the Maya (Central America); and the Tainos (in Cuba, Puerto Rico and other islands)? How many Latino children know they may have roots in the slaves brought to the New World from Africa? To make this special month more than just 30 days on a calendar, why not encourage our Latino children to take time to learn a little bit about their own family history and the legacy of our people? Teaching children about the contributions of Latinos can build their self-esteem and pride in their heritage. As a teacher, I know how important it is for all students to learn – and understand – the ethnic diversity that is the United States. Developing cultural competency in children will foster pride in their own culture, and help them to understand, respect and appreciate the uniqueness of others and their cultures.

Let me offer to you a few educational and fun projects to share with children during Hispanic Heritage Month. You can use these activities as a jumping off point for a fun lesson that honors the contributions of Hispanics to our society. • San Diego, Colorado and El Paso are names of places in the United States that reflect our Hispanic heritage. Ask a youngster to identify other states, cities and regions derived from the Spanish language, translate them and locate them on a map. • Many common English words – like banana, armadillo and chocolate – are very similar to Spanish vocabulary. Have your child list other English words that are derived from Spanish. • Encourage your child to read a brief biography of a famous Hispanic figure from history. • Work with your child to design a postage stamp commemorating the contributions of a Latino hero. • Cook a dish native to your own culture and experiment by making one from a different part of the world. These family projects can help children build a stronger identity as a Latino-American and, of course, have educational value that will carry through this new school year. To mark Hispanic Heritage Month, and to help get this new school year off to a flying start, give one a try! To honor Hispanic Heritage Month, NYSUT has created a poster celebrating the work of the revered Latina poet Julia de Burgos (19171953), who drew inspiration from her life in Puerto Rico and New York City, and our struggles for recognition and equality. Tenemos igualmente la obligación de compartir con nuestros hijos, la historia, geografía, lenguaje, comida y literatura de nuestra gente. El Mes de la Herencia Hispana, se celebra desde Septiembre 15 hasta Octubre 15, no solo empieza con el nuevo año escolar, también ofrece la maravillosa oportunidad de celebrar con nuestros hijos la historia y acontecimientos de los latinos de todo el mundo. Celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Hispana con nuestros hijos, compartimos la esperanza de que ellos también, puedan llevar alto y hacer contribuciones positivas en la vida de los Estados Unidos. Existen más de 43 millones de latinos en los Estados Unidos, y el número va en crecimiento. Pero cuantos de nuestros niños conocen que muchos HispanoAmericanos tienen sus raíces en los indígenas de las Américas, incluyendo los Arawaks (Puerto Rico); los Aztecas (Méjico); los Incas (Perú); los Mayas (Centro América); y los Tainos (Cuba, Puerto Rico y otras Islas). Desarrollar la competencia cultural en los niños les creará orgullo por su propia cultura, y les ayudará a entender, respetar y apreciar la excepcionalidad de otras y de sus propias culturas. Déjenme indicarles algunos pocos divertidos proyectos educativos para compartir con sus hijos durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Pueden usar estas actividades como punto de partida de una divertida lección que honra las contribuciones de los hispanos en nuestra sociedad. • San Diego, Colorado y El Paso son nombres de lugares en los Estados Unidos que reflejan nuestra herencia hispana. Para resaltar este Mes de la Herencia Hispana y para ayudar a que este año escolar tenga un buen comienzo, tratemos de hacer cualquiera de ellos! Para honrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, NYSUT ha creado un afiche celebrando el trabajo de la reverenda poeta latina Julia de Burgos (19171953), quien ha sido inspiración por su vivencia en Puerto Rico y la ciudad de Nueva York, y nuestros esfuerzos por reconocimiento e igualdad. DEPLOYMENT DIARY 9 Months to go

August was a particularly hard month for us. The preparation for the actual deployment was in full progress and by the 3rd week in August, my husband had left the safety of our country for a war many people disagree with. But to him, there is a purpose and whether people around us believe or not believe in its purpose, he fulfills his obligation to the Marine Corp and our Country and takes his place there so someone else can come home. The difficulty of the final arrangements, preparing final documents such as his will made August the more difficult. But as we do each month, we find ways to cope, to find support and to go to sleep each day with prayers and hope for tomorrow, knowing when we wake we can count one more day until he comes home. August brought more performances including the honor of having Nicaya sing for Goose Gossage at the NY Penn League All Star Luncheon. She was so happy to be able to sing a new song “Take me out to the ball game” It was exciting for her and she loved her reward, swimming at the hotel pool after the lunch! August also brought Kindergarten welcome and the preparation for our littlest to start school. We took a lot

of pictures and spoke to Nicaya’s new teacher about involving her class in writing letters and helping Nicaya with the support she will need as the year will be long for her and loss of contact with her daddy has been very difficult this month. I spent a lot of time pondering what I could do to make things easier for her and by doing so thought about many of the other families that are facing these difficulties. I have been fortunate to have been introduced to some wonderful people at the American Red Cross of Northeastern NY. They had been interested in doing more for the military families and by meeting with them and sharing ideas, the new “Military Family Support Group” was created. This program and project will help families have activities and group support during long deployments and my desire and hope is to become very involved as the program gets off the ground and stay involved long after my husband is back home with us. Our first outing was made possible by many supporters to include the Tri-City Valley Cats where Nicaya has found so much support. We are looking forward to our first outing with the Red Cross and hope to be able to meet many families and make many new friendships.

Our final phone call from California came on a Saturday this month. It was difficult to say goodbye and know that cell phone contact was coming to and end. We have spent the last 3 months able to say good morning and good night by phone. When we received our last phone call we did not know when we would hear his voice again. How hard it must have been for my husband to say good bye and place his cell phone in a Fed Ex envelope to be mailed home. That Saturday was a sad one in our house and Sunday even sadder. I was relieved 4 days later to receive a very quick call to let us know they had arrived at their final destination safely and I would hear more when time and circumstance allowed. The letter writing has begun and we are sure to mail something each day. My husband’s last written words as he departed were “When I left for war 19 years ago, I had nothing to lose, now I have my whole world to lose” “I promise to be careful, and will do everything in my power to come home to you” We will pray each day for his safe return and will send our love his way every waking moment.

Agosto fue un mes especialmente duro para nosotros. La preparación para el despliegue efectivo estaba en pleno progreso y para la 3 ª semana de agosto, mi marido había dejado la seguridad de nuestro país para ir a una guerra con la que muchas personas están en desacuerdo. Pero para él, hay un propósito y si la gente que nos rodea decide creer o no creer en su propósito, él cumple con su obligación del Cuerpo de la Marina de nuestro país y toma su lugar para que alguien más puede venir a casa. La dificultad de los arreglos finales, la preparación de documentos, tales como su testamento hacen al mes de agosto aun más difícil. Pero como lo hacemos cada mes, encontramos la manera de hacerle frente, buscando apoyo y para poder dormir cada día con rezos y esperanza para el mañana, sabiendo que cuando nos despertamos, podemos contar con un día más hasta que él vuelva. Agosto trajo otras presentaciones, entre ellas el honor de ver a Nicaya cantar para Goose Gossage en el almuerzo del juego de estrellas de la Liga Nueva York Penn. Ella estaba tan feliz de ser capaz de cantar una nueva canción “Take me out to the ball game”. Fue emocionante para ella quien ama su recompensa, nadar en la piscina del hotel después del almuerzo!

POR HONOR, POR EL PAIS, POR LA FAMILIA…

diARIO DE UN DESPLIEGUE MILITar faltan 9 meses

Agosto trajo también la bienvenida del año Pre-escolar y la preparación de nuestra más pequeña al empezar la escuela. Tomamos un montón de fotos y hablamos con el nuevo profesor de Nicaya acerca de la participación de su clase en escribir cartas y ayudar a Nicaya con el apoyo que necesitará a lo largo del año será más largo y por su pérdida de contacto con su papá. Pasé mucho tiempo reflexionando lo que yo podría hacer para que las cosas sean más fáciles para ella y al hacerlo pensé en muchas de las otras familias que se enfrentan con estas dificultades. He sido afortunada por haber conocido a personas maravillosas en la Cruz Roja Americana del Noreste de Nueva York. Ellos se han interesado en hacer más por los militares y las familias. Estas reuniónes lograron la creación de un grupo llamado “Familia Militar del Grupo de Apoyo”. Este programa y el proyecto ayudará a las familias a tener actividades y grupo de apoyo durante los largos despliegues y mi deseo y esperanza es envolverme bastante con el programa, ayudarle a crecer y permanecer involucrada mucho después de que mi marido regrese a casa con nosotros. Nuestra primera salida fue posible gracias a muchos colaboradores tales como los Tri-City Valley Cats donde Nicaya ha encontrado tanto apoyo. Estamos ansiosos por nuestra próxima salida con la Cruz Roja y la esperanza de poder cumplir con muchas familias y conocer muchas nuevas amistades.

Nuestra última llamada telefónica de California llegó un sábado de este mes. Es difícil decir adiós y saber que en contacto con teléfono celular estaba llegando y al final. Nos hemos pasado los últimos 3 meses en condiciones de decir buenos días y buenas noches por teléfono. Cuando recibimos nuestra última llamada telefónica no sabíamos cuando nos escucharíamos su voz de nuevo. ¿Qué tan difícil debe haber sido para mi marido el decir adiós y poner su teléfono celular en una caja de Fed Ex y ser enviado por correo a su casa. Ese sábado fue muy triste en nuestra casa y el domingo aún más triste. Me sentí mejor 4 días después de recibir una llamada rápida para hacernos saber que habían llegado a su destino final seguros y que escucharía más cuando el tiempo y las circunstancias permitieran. El escribir cartas ha comenzado y estamos seguros de mandar algo por correo todos los días. Las ultimas palabras escritas por mi marido antes de partir dicen “Cuando me fui para la guerra hace 19 años, yo no tenía nada que perder, ahora tengo todo mi mundo que perder” “Yo prometo ser cuidadoso, y haré todo lo que esté en mi poder para regresar a casa para ustedes”. Vamos a rezar cada día para su regreso seguro y enviarle nuestro amor a cada momento que podamos.

egan and Tiffany Davis, are two beautiful and talented young girls whose father is of irish descent and their mother is Colombian. They are proud of having an irish and hispanic heritage. Megan is going to represent Colombia at the beauty pagent in the Annual Festival of Nations that takes place at the Empire State Plaza’s Convention Center in Albany, NY. The Festival presentes different ethnic groups of the Capital District. During a fivehour program, those groups present their nations: their dance, food, arts and crafts.

Megan y Tiffany Davis son dos hermosas y talentosas jóvenes cuyo padre es de ascendencia irlandesa y su madre es colombiana. Sor orgullosas de tener herencia irlandesa y colombiana. Megan va a representar a Colombia en el concurso de belleza del Festival Anual de las Naciones que tiene lugar en el Empire State Plaza, en Albany, NY. El festival presenta diferentes grupos etnicos de la Región Capital. Durante un programa de cinco horas, aquellos grupos presentan sus naciones: sus bailes, comida, arte y artesanías.

Tiffany is currently studying at a local College, to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). She will soon go to Duke University to complete her studies and work in a North Carolina’s Hospital. Tiffany currently works full time at an independent living home.

Tiffany, actualmente estudia en una universidad local, para ser una Enfermera Anestecista Certificada (CRNA). Pronto irá a la Universidad de Duke para completar sus estudios y trabajar en un hospital de Carolina del Norte. Ella trabaja actualmente tiempo completo en un hogar para vivienda independiente de gente mayor.

She enjoys spending time with family and friends, likes to travel and learn about other cultures. Her favorite food is colombian Bandeja Paisa.

Megan Davis Megan, is currently in College studying Nursing to go into Emergency Medicine. She just finished up an internship at Albany Med where she worked in the ER. Megan works at a Daycare Facility and a Retirement Home. Megan loves her family, enjoys writing and is interested in her colombian and irish heritage. She also likes to spend time with friends, family, traveling and dancing.

Tiffany Davis Megan, está actualmente estudiando en Universidad para trabajar en Medicina de Salas de Emergencia. Acabó de concluir una pasantía en Albany Med donde trabajó en la Sala de Urgencias. Actualmente trabaja en una guardería y en un Hogar de Retiro. Adora a su familia y amigos, disfruta escribir y le interesa su herencia cultural irlandesa y colombiana. También le gusta pasar tiempo con amigos y familiares viajando y bailando.

LA PRESERVACIÓN DEL MEDIO AMBIENTE Y NUESTRA COMUNIDAD LATINA By: Indira Enamorado

o hay duda que el calentamiento global es obra de la mano del hombre, ya que según estudios realizados por ambientalistas la concentración de gases tóxicos en la atmósfera es la mayor observada en 650.00 años. Dicha emisión es de efecto invernadero, ya que algunos de los gases que se producen como resultado de la actividad industrial como son el dióxido de Carbono, el metano y el óxido nitroso se acumulan en la atmósfera y fortalecen su intensidad como efecto invernadero con una duración de hasta de 100 años, aumentando así a temperatura del planeta y variando sus climas. Un ejemplo claro del desequilibrio ambiental que padece el planeta es el presentado con los glaciales que pierden entre 50 centímetros de agua y un metro de profundidad cada año. De igual manera, la superficie terrestre ha aumentado en los últimos 50 años, es por esto que han sido los más calientes de nuestra historia. A pesar de los esfuerzos que han emprendido diversas organizaciones y países alrededor del mundo, no se ha logrado disminuir en su totalidad el acelerado deterioro de la capa de ozono y los análisis a futuro demuestran que la temperatura promedio del planeta puede llegar a ser 3 grados y medio mayor al que tenemos al igual que el nivel del mar, en el mismo orden de ideas también aumentarán los desiertos y áreas áridas en nuestro planeta.

Por otra parte, el desequilibrio de la temperatura promedio del planeta también trae consigo diversas enfermedades como dengues, epidemias que llegarían afectar los sistemas de producción y alimentación, sumando los desastres naturales que al llegar su tiempo irán aumentando. Por estos y muchos más motivos las organizaciones y comunidades internacionales hacen un llamado de solidaridad y colaboración para que todos aportemos un grano de arena para preservar el medio ambiente. Los problemas ambientales son una realidad que tenemos que afrontar y tenemos que cambiarla y este cambio empieza en casa. “ Nosotros los latinos también buscamos y apoyamos éste cambio, aquí en Amsterdam la mayoría de nuestra comunidad Latina se encuentra educada sobre este tema, todos estamos en la obligación de trabajar a beneficio de nuestro planeta. There will be those parents who are sending their children off for the first time, whether it is kindergarten or even the first year of college, it can be hard when it comes to letting go of those we love. Although it is a difficult task, it is necessary in order for our children to grow. So for those of you who have to say goodbye, remember it’s not forever, but only for a little while in order to help them bloom and grow like the beautiful children they are which God has given to us out of love.

Scared Straight Dear Lisa: Last week a few of my friends decided to come over to visit. All of us were just sitting around having fun when one of my friends asked me to bring out the Ouija Board I had in my closet for some time. I was cautious at first because I had

heard stories about Ouija Boards, but I figured it was just for fun, and didn’t believe in the things people say. As we began asking questions everything was ok at first, but then the Ouija Board device started moving very rapidly, so I decided to stop. Now my house doesn’t seem to feel comfortable anymore, and my dog that is usually quiet, has began barking for no reason. She stares at my front door and then starts barking, and when I go to check to see if anyone is there no one at the door. Can you please tell me what is going on, and if there is anything I can do? This situation has me scared. Laura – Amsterdam, NY Dear Laura: First I want to let you know that Ouija Boards can be dangerous because they can open portals to negative energies or even entities. Find the nearest dumpster as soon as you can and throw it away. There are a few things you can do to try to help neutralize some of the negativity. You can cleanse your home with a White Sage used for “Smudging”, a method used by Native Americans for centuries. Incense each room with the White Sage, and ask for all negative energies and entities to leave. After incensing you can also get some fresh camphor crush it up and mix it with regular table salt. Sprinkle the mixture around the outside of your home, and inside each room of your home. If you like you can also follow up with Holy Water to bless your home while praying to St. Michael. As for your dog, animals are psychic by nature and can sense danger or any unknown presence that is why your dog started barking she was letting you know something is wrong. In the future if anyone wants to play with any Ouija Boards, let them know what they are in for and then run in the opposite direction. Good luck. It’s important to make changes both to the way you drive and to the type of maintenance you provide for your vehicle regardless if it is a truck for weekend outings or the family van. Whether you can afford to upgrade your vehicle right now or not, here are ten things you can do to ‘green’ your driving on a daily basis. 1. When you are driving, follow the speed limit. Sounds simple doesn’t it – but most people speed a good 10-20 miles an hour over the speed limit. By driving 8-9 miles an hour less than you would normally, you will improve your fuel economy and lower the tailpipe emissions levels. 2. One of the most important driving issues is to avoid being an aggressive driver. Try to avoid flooring the gas pedal, as this will increase air pollution and waste gas. With today’s fuel prices, none of us needs that extra cost. Just one second of this type of driving produces carbon dioxide emissions close to the equivalent of a half an hour of normal driving. 3. Another issue is rush hour style of driving. Constant stop and go driving burns more gas and increases vehicle emissions. Not everyone can avoid driving during rush hour, but if possible plan your trips for other times of the day. 4. Paying attention and anticipate stops will let you coast down as much as possible. This helps to avoid the extra pollution and gas while lessening the wear on your brakes.
