Welcome to the July edition of Latino New York Magazine. In this issue, we recognize achievers in our community. What is an achiever? The term achievement has different meaning for everyone. For me, is a person who achieves a goal or an objective regardless of the level of difficulty or degree of importance.
Bienvenidos al ejemplar de Julio de la revista Latino New York. Haremos un reconocimiento a triunfadores en nuestra comunidad. ¿Qué es un triunfador? Un triunfador tiene diferentes significados para todo el mundo. Para mí, es una persona que logra una meta u objetivo sin importar lo difícil del camino o lo minúsculo del propósito.
Recently, we are proud to report that we have met many people who meet this classification regardless of anyone interpretation. There are so many that we do not have enough space to be able to recognize them all. We met young Baseball players from the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Venezuela who play with the ValleyCats in Troy. Many of these kids have not seen their family for many months following a dream in which less than ten percent make it to the big league. We met a group of young people and adults who were recognized by the YMCA of the Capital District for their commitment to education, their families and their community.
En estos días estamos orgullosos de haber conocido a muchas personas triunfadoras. Son tantas que no tenemos suficiente espacio para poder reconocerlas a todas. Conocimos jóvenes peloteros de la República Dominicana, Colombia y Venezuela que juegan con los ValleyCats en Troy, no han visto a su familia por muchos meses por su empeño de alcanzar su sueño, que sólo un diez por ciento logra obtener. Conocimos un grupo de jóvenes y adultos premiados por la YMCA del Distrito Capital por el cumplimiento de su misión a la educación, sus familias y a la comunidad misma.
Also, we found people whom we knew but did not know they had hidden talents. People like Dianna Rios, who has allowed us to experience her family’s journey with her writing. We are happy to inform you that Dianna has pledged to write a monthly journal of family activities while Nicasio Rios deployment abroad. Thanks Dianna.
Así mismo, nos reencontramos con algunas personas de quienes desconocíamos ciertos talentos, como Dianna Ríos quien nos ha permitido entrar en su mundo familiar con su habilidad de escritora. Nos complace informarles que Dianna se ha comprometido a escribir un diario mensual de las actividades de la familia, mientras Nicasio Ríos esté fuera del país. ¡Gracias Dianna!
A few days ago, I received a call from a lady that wanted to support the magazine somehow. We agree to meet in her office to see what we could do. When we started talking I recognized immediately that I was in front of a very special person. This person is Dr. Attila Glorimar. This achiever is the right person to be our cover story for July. When you read her short autobiography you like me will realize how lucky we are to have her in our community. “Un orgullo Latino” in a variety of ways. Summer Should Be A Time for Discovery, Reading

T
he final bell of the school year brings summer vacation, but it should not bring a vacation from learning or reading. I want to encourage parents and their children to together use the summer months to explore our Latino heritage through reading. Books can help children understand who they are – and the kinds of contributions they can make to their communities. Through books, children can also expand their curiosity and become lifelong learners. We all are inspired by books -- by a special character, a historical figure or a fascinating plot twist. Reading with your child this summer will not only help maintain their academic progress and draw you closer together, but may also set your child on a life path toward a particular career or calling. As a newcomer to this country from Puerto Rico, I had difficulty learning English. I was fortunate to have the support of my family and my teachers. They encouraged me to keep working and learning, and because of this shared perseverance and commitment, I graduated college and went on to become a bilingual education teacher. In my classroom, I did my best to bring my love of reading to the next generation of our children.

There are many people who will be glad to help you pick some good books to read with your child this summer. Your child’s classroom teacher is a good choice, as is the school librarian. Our community public libraries are a wonderful resource for all parents and children. One valuable resource for Latino parents is the list of Pura Belpre Award winners from the American Library Association (www.ala.org). Pura Belpre was the first Puerto Rican woman hired by the New York City public library system. Through her work, my neighborhood library as a youth - at 115 St. in El Barrio -- became an important cultural center for all Latinos. Here are some of the books that have won the prestigious Pura Belpre award for
portraying, honoring and celebrating the Latino experience: • “My Name is Gabito: The Life of Gabriel Garcia Marquez / Me llamo Gabito: la vida de Gabriel Garcia Marquez,” by Monica Brown. This is the life story of one of the greatest Latino authors. • “Cesar: Si, se puede! Yes, We can!” by Carmen Bernier-Grand. Cesar Chavez was one of the great labor and humanitarian leaders of the 20th century. • “Before We Were Free,” by Julia Alvarez. It is a young person’s novel about a teenager’s life in the Dominican Republic during the dictatorship, and her family’s journey to America. • “My Name is Celia / Me llamo Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz / La Vida de Celia Cruz,” by Monica Brown. It is the story of a brilliant musician who brings pride in our music to the entire world. Read with your children. Take pride in books about our heritage. l verano debe ser un tiempo de Descubrimiento y Lectura La campana final del año escolar trae consigo las vacaciones de verano, pero no debe apartarse de aprender o de leer en las vacaciones. Quiero animar a los padres y a sus hijos para que juntos usen los meses de verano para explorar nuestra herencia latina a través de la lectura.
Los libros ayudan a los niños a entender quienes son y las clases de contribuciones que ellos pueden dar en sus comunidades. A través de los libros, los niños pueden expandir su curiosidad y convertirse en mejores aprendices. Todos hemos sido inspirados por libros –por un personaje en especial, una figura histórica o un final inesperado. Leer con sus hijos este verano, no solo los ayudará a mantener su progreso académico y acercarlos mutuamente, pero también puede determinarle a su hijo un camino en la vida hacia una carrera particular. Cuando estuve recién llegada de Puerto Rico a este país , tuve dificultad aprendiendo inglés. Fui afortunada al tener el apoyo de mi familia y profesores. Ellos me animaron a seguir trabajando y aprendiendo, y con perseverancia y entrega, me gradúe de la universidad y me convertí en una educadora bilingüe. En mi salón de clase, hice lo mejor por brindarle a la siguiente generación de niños, mi amor por la lectura. Hay muchas personas que estarían gustosas de ayudarlo a escoger libros para que sus niños lean durante este verano. El profesor de la clase de sus hijos es una buena alternativa, así como la bibliotecaria de la escuela. Las bibliotecas públicas de nuestra comunidad son un excelente recurso para padres e hijos. Un recurso valioso para los padres latinos es la lista de los ganadores del Premio Pura Belpre de la Asociación Americana

de Bibliotecas (www.ala.org). Pura Belpre fue la primera mujer puertorriqueña contratada por el sistema de bibliotecas públicas de la ciudad de Nueva York. DEPLOYMENT DIARY 11 Months to go By: Dianna Rios Translated by Juan George
July brings us 1 month closer to the end of our year long separation. Our separation still finds our loved ones in California preparing for a fall deployment. Our days are filled with the daily routines of work and pre-school; the evenings with the calendar, journal entries, discussions of daddy’s job, letter writing, reading or special times with friends for dinner or play dates. How wonderful a community we live in, to share it’s outpouring of support to our family during this time. The encouragement from acquaintances and strangers alike to continue to write for this publication has given us the unique opportunity to share our thanks, share our story and share the ways we spend the time counting down the days until we can be together again as a family. If through this new “deployment diary” we are able to touch the lives of families we have not yet met, and can share some ideas that may help someone else find ways to count down the days, I am happy to continue writing. I spent some time pondering how I could include Nicaya’s daddy in the special events that he would miss in June. How could we involve him in things like Pre-School graduation? I began by sharing with him that graduation would include a performance by the class of Eric Carle’s, “A Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Nicaya had been chosen to be the caterpillar and as I went to work sewing garden gloves to her costume, I thought, let’s share this story with daddy as part of our video project. I purchased a copy of the book and had each child from Nicaya’s class sign their name on the page that represented the character or part that they played. Now as Nicaya would read to daddy she was able to add her own narrative such as, “You

know what, my friend Molly got to be the butterfly!” Doing this one simple thing added a sense of personalization to the story as if daddy was here and could see the children as she described their part and relevance to the story. In turn, he was able to find an online store that specialized in stuffed animals, and sure enough sitting on our front porch one day shortly after the play was a box containing a caterpillar for his little Nicaya. Our reading project has become so special to both Nicaya and daddy that I felt it was time for Nicaya to have her first Library Card. Nicaya was excited on this trip to the Library. We approached the information desk and peering over the counter with her beautiful smile and excitement, we filled out the paperwork that would enable Nicaya to pick out special books for daddy and to check them out herself. The Librarian asked if she could sign her name and she proudly said, “of course!” Rather than a summer book list, we will compile a “Daddy Book List”. We will pick out one book to be read to her and one book she can read to us. We will make a list of all the books we’ve shared and we will chart the books she learns to read with stickers on a book poster we’ve created for the 12 months we’re apart.
nity awareness event focused on the STOP DWI campaign it included a patriotic theme and groups such as the Blue Star Mothers and Wounded Warriors. The flag raising was breathtaking and as Nicaya sang the Star Spangled Banner the flag raised behind her to local Marine’s saluting the Flag. Nicaya’s ability to bring a smile to others while speaking and singing for her dad is a very special gift. She also sang at the Capital District Soap Box Derby event the first week in June which introduced us to a wonderful woman who has a project called, “The American Girl Project”. Nicaya was sent an American Girl doll with a beautiful patriotic dress (sewn especially for her). It arrived on Flag Day with a note letting Nicaya know that her very special doll would receive a new dress every month that her daddy is gone. What an exciting thing to look forward to help count down the months! The days have been long and hot and as we spent many rainy days in June, I
am reminded that the last time I spoke with Nick the 118 degree temperature in the California desert was steady and he wished he could have been here for the rain. We always loved rainy days together. We spoke of vacations and days where counting days no longer would be necessary. No more visiting on the weekends and missing important dates, enjoying birthdays and holidays and every day just a little bit more because we would be celebrating them together. It has been very quiet around our house these days, if that is possible with a 5 year old! But we share our goodnights and good mornings by including daddy in our prayers and sharing how much we each miss him and love him. Our next diary entry will hopefully include a surprise visit from daddy to Nicaya as his unit gets a short break before the last phase of pre-training and finally the actually deployment. I will conclude June with a very special thank you to Dino Petrocelli www.dinopetrocelli.com who took such beautiful photos of our family as we prepared for this deployment. His talent is evident, his friendship invaluable. The photos have touched everyone in a very special way and without them this story might never have been told.
June was also a very patriotic month for us. Nicaya was asked to sing for the American Red Cross and for the Choices 301 Flag Day event. How proud we were to be part of the “Help Can’t Wait” event for The Red Cross, www.redcrossneny.org, by doing so we were able to help bring awareness to the many great programs the Red Cross has to offer, and the wonderful things they do and have always done to help the families of military. The Flag Day event was another great event for this community. A commu-

diARIO DE UN DESPLIEGUE MILITar faltan 11 meses
Julio nos acerca 1 mes más al final de nuestro año de separación. Nuestra separación todavía encuentra a nuestros seres queridos en California preparándose para su partida en otoño. Nuestros días están llenos de la rutina diaria del trabajo y de educación preescolar; las noches con el calendario, adelantos en el diario, las discusiones de trabajo del papá, escritura de cartas, lectura o momentos especiales con amigos para cenar o citas de juego. Qué maravillosa es la comunidad en que vivimos, compartir sus muestras de apoyo a nuestra familia durante este tiempo. El aliento de conocidos y extraños por igual a seguir escribiendo para esta publicación nos ha dado la oportunidad única de compartir nuestro agradecimiento, nuestra historia y la manera en que pasamos el tiempo, contando los días hasta que podamos estar juntos de nuevo como una familia. Si a través de este nuevo “diario” somos capaces de tocar las vidas de las familias que aún no hemos conocidos, y poder compartir algunas ideas que pueden ayudar a alguien más encontrar la manera de contar los días, estoy feliz de continuar escribiendo. Pasé algún tiempo reflexionando cómo podría incluir al padre de Nicaya en los eventos especiales donde no estaría en Junio. ¿Cómo podemos involúcralo en cosas como la graduación del curso PRE-escolar? Comencé por compartir con él, en que la graduación iba a incluir una presentación de la clase de

Eric Carle, “A Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Nicaya había sido elegida para ser la oruga y al estar cosiendo guantes de jardinero su traje, pensé, vamos a compartir esta historia con papá como parte de nuestro proyecto de video. He comprado un ejemplar del libro y le pedí a cada niño en la clase de Nicaya firmar su nombre en la página que representa su personaje o el papel que hizo. Ahora como Nicaya puede leerle a su papá, ella fue capaz de añadir su propia narrativa, como “¿Sabes qué, mi amiga Molly es la mariposa!”. Al hacer algo tan sencillo,le añade un sentido de personalización a la historia como si papá estuviera aquí y pudiera ver a los niños, como ella describe su personaje y su relevancia a la historia. A su vez, él fue capaz de encontrar una tienda online especializada en animales de peluche, y por supuesto, poco después de la obra, encontramos en nuestro pórtico una caja con una oruga para su pequeña Nicaya. Nuestro proyecto de lectura se ha convertido tan especial tanto para Nicaya como para su papá, que sentí que había llegado el momento de Nicaya tuviera su primera tarjeta de Biblioteca. Nicaya estuvo muy entusiasmada en el viaje a la Biblioteca. Nos acercamos al mostrador de información y con su hermosa sonrisa y la emoción, llenamos el papeleo que permitió a Nicaya seleccionar libros especiales para papá y para leerlos ella misma. El Bibliotecario preguntó si ella podría firmar su nombre y ella dice con orgullo, “por supuesto!” Más que una lista de libros de verano, vamos a elaborar una “lista de libros para Daddy”. Vamos a escoger un libro para ser leído a ella y un libro que ella nos pueda leer
a nosotros. Vamos a hacer una lista de todos los libros que hemos compartido y haremos una gráfica de los libros que aprenda a leer con pegatinas en un libro de carteles que hemos creado para los 12 meses que estamos separados. Junio también fue un mes muy patriótico para nosotros. A Nicaya se le pidió que cantara para la Cruz Roja Americana y en las Decisiones 301 del Día de la Bandera. Cuan orgullosos estábamos de ser parte de la “Ayuda no Puede Esperar” evento de la Cruz Roja, www.redcrossneny.org, al hacerlo hemos podido contribuir a la sensibilización hacia los programas que la Cruz Roja ofrece, y las cosas maravillosas que hacen y han hecho siempre para ayudar a las familias de militares. El evento del Día de la Bandera fue otro gran acontecimiento para esta comunidad. Un evento de sensibilización a la comunidad que se centró en la campaña STOP DWI, se incluyó un tema patriótico y grupos como la Madres Blue Star y guerreros heridos. La izada de bandera fue impresionante, cuando Nicaya cantaba el Star Spangled Banner himno nacional Americano, detrás de ella se alzaba la bandera por los miembros locales de la marina que saludaban la bandera. La habilidad de Nicaya de sacar una sonrisa a los demás, mientras que hace el uso de la palabra y el canto por su papá, es un don muy especial. Ella también cantó en el Distrito Capital Soap Box Derby, la primera semana de junio, que nos presenta a una mujer maravillosa que tiene un proyecto denominado, “El Proyecto de American Girl”. Nicaya recibió una muñeca de American Girl, con un hermoso traje patriótico (cosido
especialmente para ella). Le llegó el Día de la Bandera con una nota dejándole saber que su muñeca recibirá un nuevo traje cada mes que su papá este fuera del país. ¡Qué cosa tan emocionante la que ayudara mirar hacia adelante y contar los meses! Los días han sido largos y calurosos y como hemos pasado muchos días lluviosos en junio, recuerdo que la última vez que hablé con Nick, me dijo que los 118 grados de temperatura en el desierto de California fueron constantes, y hubiera querido estar aquí por la lluvia. Siempre amó los días lluviosos. Hemos hablado de vacaciones y del momento en que el recuento de días ya no será necesario. No más visitas de fines de semana y faltar a fechas importantes, disfrutar de cumpleaños y cada día un poco más, porque los vamos a celebrar juntos. Nuestra casa ha estado muy tranquila en los últimos días, si eso es posible con una niña de 5 años! Pero decimos nuestra buenas noches y buenos días con la inclusión de papá en nuestras oraciones, compartiendo lo mucho que lo extrañamos y queremos. En nuestra próximo capítulo del diario, espero incluir una visita sorpresa de papá, ya que su unidad recibe una breve receso antes de la última fase de preentrenamiento y, por último, la partida. Voy a terminar junio con un muy especial agradecimiento a Dino Petrocelli (www. dinopetrocelli.com) quien tomó fotos de nuestra familia al estarnos preparando para esta partida. Su talento es evidente, y su amistad, invaluable . Las fotos han tocado a todos de una manera muy especial y sin ellas esta historia tal vez nunca se hubiese contado.

Un Angel para los Niños Necesitados Papa Jaime
Piense por un instante, que sentiría usted si tuviera que meterse a una alcantarilla ... muchos ni siquiera lo considerarían. Ahora piense y respóndame, quién podría vivir en una alcantarilla? La problemática de la niñez abandonada en Latinoamérica, tiene rasgos tan atroces que el solo hecho de pensar en que a muchos menores, les toca hacer de una alcantarilla su vivienda, hace que se nos rompa el corazón. Durante años el problema de la niñez desamparada y maltratada se ha convertido en una constante en ciudades latinoamericanas, en especial en sectores de bajos recursos económicos. La falta de servicios de educación y salud, genera muchas veces la destrucción del núcleo familiar induciendo a los niños a salir de sus hogares, o muchas veces son solo abandonados en los hospitales al momento de nacer. “Las razones para abordar la calle son diversas: problemas familiares, malas amistades o compañías, pérdida de la familia, dificultades de desplazamiento forzoso, deserción escolar” , entre otras. Ellos no han tenido una segunda oportunidad, no pidieron ser traídos a este mundo, solo sus ojitos nos gritan con desesperación, ayúdenme. Una persona, ha puesto su vida al servicio de estos niños en Colombia. Es Jaime Jaramillo, más conocido como Papá Jaime. Un ingeniero geofísico y de petróleos, que durante treinta años ha estado trabajando por la recuperación de aquellos niños que viven en la calle y en las alcantarillas.
Su vida cambió cuando una noche de diciembre, una pequeña niña se lanzó a recoger una caja de muñecas que fue lanzada desde un carro, y la niña por mirarlo a él, se distrajo sin darse cuenta del camión que venía a gran velocidad y la atropelló. Cuando se acercó en vano a auxiliarla, porque la pequeña murió en el acto, se dio cuenta que la caja por la cual dio su vida, estaba vacía. Desde aquel instante, el ayudar a los niños que no tienen hogar, llevarles un pan, calmarles su dolor ha sido el motor que guía su vida. Otra niña que se creía había sido atropellada por un carro, fue recogida por Papá Jaime y cuando le preguntó donde vivía, fue ella quien le abrió esa otra realidad desconocida por muchos, la de los niños que viven en las alcantarillas. Desde aquel momento, su vida se convirtió en rescatar a esos niños abandonados en la oscuridad, condenados la soledad y el miedo. En una sociedad donde los niños de la calle se habían convertido en parte del paisaje cotidiano, sin haber una ayuda dedicada a ellos, Papá Jaime junto con un puñado de voluntarios, les dedican su tiempo, amor y guía, para hacer de esos niños los futuros hombres y mujeres forjadores de la paz que tanto anhela el país.
Papá Jaime al hacer referencia a estos niños dice: “Todos esos niños viven entre excrementos humanos y ratas, por debajo de la ciudad, que no tiene ilusiones, que el día y la noche se confunden porque son noches enteras buscando un pedazo de pan, una mano amiga o quizás esa palabra amorosa de ese padre, de esa madre que nunca tuvieron tiempo para ellos” . La vida de estos niños es algo que nadie se imagina, las historias mas aterradoras las ha escuchado de estos pequeños que terminan por vivir en aquella desolación. Nunca olvidará un día en el que se inundaron las alcantarillas de Bogotá, cuando sostenía en cada brazo a un niño, intentando salvarlos de la corriente de agua, pero desesperado no tuvo otra opción que soltar a uno de ellos y salvar al otro. Este ángel llamado Jaime Jaramillo, pero Papá Jaime para los niños , no solo los visita sino que también les da albergue, educación y amor, en las cinco instituciones que tiene en Colombia. Fue nominado al Premio Nobel de la Paz y recibió el Premio Internacional de la Paz junto con la Madre Teresa de Calcuta. Taking Good Care of Your Lawful
Permanent Resident Status

A
fter years of waiting and spending time, money and effort in attaining lawful permanent resident status, finally, you have received your “green card”. It is very important to maintain your permanent residency status as it opens you up to a lot of opportunities and privileges. 1. Keep your Permanent Resident Card in a safe place As what it is sometimes called, a “green card” is one of the best evidence of your proof of permanent residency. You may want to make several copies of it and the original stored in a safe place. Aside from being a form of identification, your green card also serves as a travel document when you travel outside the US. 2. Travel outside the US Most green card holders want to travel outside the US for a variety of reasons, most common of which is to visit their friends and family in their native country whom they have not seen in along while. It is important to realize that these trips should, as far as practicable, should be less than six (6) months in duration. Prolonged absence in the US may be taken to mean that the green card holder has no intention to reside permanently in the US or has abandoned his permanent residency status. If you intend to be outside the US for a period of more than six ( 6) months, it would be safe for you to obtain a Re-Entry

Permit which will authorize you to remain outside the US for up to two years. You must apply for the Re-Entry Permit before you leave the US. However, even if you are granted the said permit, that does not mean that you are guaranteed to be admitted back to the US as a returning resident. You must still prove that you have not abandoned your lawful permanent residence status and that you have maintained ties to the US. These proof of ties may include: payment of taxes as a resident in the US, presence of family here in the US, maintaining a job in the US, having a business in the US, properties under your name and control located in the US, actual place of residence in the US, bills and letters addressed to you in the US, enrolment in US schools, and other supporting evidence which will prove that you do not have the intention of abandoning permanent residency in the US. 3. Immigration Consequences of Criminal Involvement Permanent residency status may also be lost if the green card holder has committed certain crimes. There are a number of crimes or offenses which may be a ground for deportation of a green card holder. The important issue here is for the green card holder to avoid committing any form of criminal activity. And if you are already faced with a prosecution for any criminal violation, you
or your criminal defense attorney may want to discuss with an immigration attorney on the possible immigration consequences. 4. Change of Address The USCIS requires that if you move, you are required to report your new address to the USCIS District Office within 10 (ten ) days using Form AR-11. Failure to report is a ground for deportation. 5. Selective Service Registration All men age 18-26 are required to register for Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday or within 30 days of the time they become permanent residents of the US. Failure to comply may cause a denial of your application for US citizenship. These are just some of the ways on how you preserve and maintain your permanent residency status. It should not just be squandered away as it provides tremendous opportunities for a better life.

“A stranger walked into my life to relieve pain and restore function”

orn and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Glorimar knew she wanted to be a doctor from early in life. At the age of 15, Glorimar lost her aunt to breast cancer. Her aunt’s sudden passing was a devastating experience to each member of her family. “Her death made me realize that families, not only individuals, are affected by the ailments and diseases of their loved ones. The dynamics of our family were changed forever”. Later that year, Glorimar, herself became a patient after being in a motor vehicle accident. “Being a patient was a humbling experience: My life was in the hands and skills of ‘a person’ I had never met”. A stranger walked into my life to “relieve pain and restore function”. Glorimar gained full recovery. Her interest and curiosity

in medicine was further inspired by her grandmother, who worked as a registered nurse and anesthetist at “Distrito Hospital” in Ponce, PR. The anecdotes of her grandmothers’ experiences with patient care in the Operating Room and the Delivery Suite were a frequent topic of conversation. The operating room, became a familiar place to Glorimar. Glorimar obtained her medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine in 1999. She established residence in Albany, New York, in 2000 after a one year Internship at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey. Dr. Atiles attended Albany Medical Center from 2000-2004 where she completed her residency in General Surgery. Upon completion of residency training, Dr. Atiles pursued further subspecialty training in Laparoscopic, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at Westchester Medical Center/New York Medical College from 2004-2005. During her fellowship, Dr. Atiles gained further expertise in the most advanced and complex laparoscopic procedures. In 2005 Dr. Atiles obtained Board Certification in General Surgery at her first attempt. And in 2006, Dr. Atiles became an Active Physician with full privileges at Saint Peter’s Hospital where she is the most experienced advanced laparoscopic surgeon in staff.
Dr. Glorimar Atiles specializes in gallbladder, cancer, gastrointestinal, ventral and groin hernia. Being fellowship trained, she has performed a large number of cases with excellent outcomes and prompt recovery. She is also a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. Glorimar lives in Slingerlands with husband Dean and son Michael Alexander. acida en Ponce, Puerto Rico, Glorimar desde joven desarrolló interés en el campo de la medicina. A los 15 años, fallece su tía paterna de cáncer de los senos. El vacío que dejo su muerte súbita afecto a todos los miembros de su familia. “Su muerte silenciosa y lenta, me hizo entender que como familia todos sufrimos los padecimientos de nuestros seres queridos.” Ese mismo año, se convierte Glorimar en paciente cuando sufre un accidente automovilístico. “Fue esta una experiencia noble: Mi vida estaba en las maños de una persona que nunca había conocido”. Glorimar se recupera completamente gracias a las atenciones medicas que recibió y el apoyo de su familia. Su interés y curiosidad en el campo de la medicina se fortaleció con esta experiencia. Su abuela, quien trabajo como enfermera y anestesista en el Hospital Distrito de Ponce, también sirvió de fuente de inspiración.
“Monmouth Medical Center” localizado en Long Branch, Nueva Jersey. Atiende el programa de residencia en cirugía general de “Albany Medical Center” en el 2000 y completa su residencia en el 2004. La Dra. Atiles obtiene sub-especialización en el campo de cirugía laparoscópica y bariatrica en “Westchester Medical Center” de Valhala, Nueva York. Durante su año de sub especialización, la Dra. Atiles obtiene mayor experiencia y conocimiento en los casos mas avanzados y complejos de su campo. Completa su sub-especialidad en el año 2005 a la vez que pasa su examen de certificación en el campo de cirugía general otorgado por el Colegio de Cirujanos de los Estado Unidos. En el año 2006, la Dra. Atiles obtiene privilegios en el “St. Peter’s Hospital” donde ejerce como el cirujano de mayor experiencia en el campo de cirugía laparoscópica avanzada.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR WIPER Como remplazar las BLADES plumillas del limpiabrisas

Step 1:
Look up your vehicle’s make and model in the reference books where wiper blades are sold. (keep in mind that your nearest NAPA store will carry all kinds of wipers and you may even get help installing them)
Step 2:
Open the package containing the new windshield wiper blade. The package should include up to three or four different styles of blade attachment ‘the small plastic piece that secures the new blade to the wiper arm.
Step 3:
Examine the existing attachment (where the arm and the blade meet), then find a new one in your package that matches it.
Step 4:
Grasp the windshield wiper arm and pull up, away from the car. The blade and arm should now be sticking out perpendicular to the window.
Step 5:
Remove the windshield wiper blade from the arm at the attachment. There will usually be a small tab you can depress with a screwdriver that will allow you to pull the blade from the arm. Some attachments have a small metal bump and two tabs on either side; you depress the tabs and pull hard to remove the blade. Some just snap onto the blade.

Step 6:
Remove the old attachment from the wiper blade and replace it with the new one.
Step 7:
Install the blade onto the windshield wiper arm.
Step 8:
Test by turning on the wipers. If the blades
slip, turn off the wipers and seat the attachments more firmly
Tips & Warnings: • It is better (although more expensive) to replace the whole wiper blade, not just the rubber part. • The new wiper blades will come in a package with up to three or four attachments for each blade. One of these is the correct one for your car. Do not despair; with persistence, you will figure it out. • Changing wiper blades for the first time has been known to cause extreme frustration. • Do not let the windshield wiper arm snap back against the windshield when there is no blade attached; this can crack the windshield.

Una de ellas es la correcta para su carro. No se desespere, con persistencia, usted lo hará. • Cambiar las plumillas por primera vez ha sido causa de gran frustración.

SUMMER MAGIC By: Bettyjo H. Bouchey Vice President of Campus Operations, Mildred Elley and Austin’s School of Spa Technology
Look out world, here you come. It’s summer, the most magical time of year. It’s during summer that we feel the overwhelming sense of possibility and opportunity. We feel powerful and free. As the flowers blossom so does our hope and dreams of what will be. We spend lost days in the sun, a hammock, on a beach; charting our next steps. Summer is magic and you are about to pop out of that top hat; look out world, here you come. This is the summer you will take stock of your life. You’ll line up the good, bad and ugly and chart a plan to positively change your path for the better. You won’t be waiting until something bad happens to you to start changing yourself—and the world— for the better. This path you start laying out will read like a recipe. The ingredients will be the changes you’ll make to reach your goal and the finished product will be a new you. Your goals will range from long to short-term and will only be goals that can feasibly be obtained (e.g., a short-term goal of yours should not be to become the president of the United States—perhaps a long-term one though!). As you draft these ingredients to a new you, think about how you will measure your success. These “milestones” will keep you on track and reinforce your hard work when you can definitively say you have accomplished one of your goals. I hope you will also share your goals with someone that is important to you and invite them to share in your work and your eventual success. This kind of support network is proven to aid in those trying to change a behavior— these people can be a living alarm system that beeps when you veer off track—sometimes we can’t do that for ourselves, can we? As you write these potential goals down, I invite you to consider the areas listed below I like to call the Fantastic Four. Each year I sit down and ensure that I am working on at least one goal in every one of these four areas—confident they will lead me down the right path. While I don’t guarantee the Fantastic Four will lead you to a perfect life, I hope they will be a jump-off point for you as you set your summer 2008 goals. 1) Family. Am I the best wife, husband, mother, father, daughter, son, significant other that I can be? 2) Education. Do I have the educational credentials needed to obtain the job I believe will make me happy and allow me to support myself and my family? 3) Financial. Do I have enough money in savings to cover six months of expenses should I be laid off in a down economy?

4) Health. Do I participate in physical exercise of some sort at for at least thirty minutes, three times per week? Certainly these areas do not cover all the categories your goals could fall under, but I hope you will attach some goals to the ones listed. I guarantee that working on these four key areas will nurture other goals you may have and generally lead you to a happier life. Furthermore, I believe that if you set attainable goals around these four areas you could potentially wake up each day with that sense of summer in your belly; that feeling that you can do anything, accomplish anything and be the best that is possible. Imagine waking up each day in a house filled with people you love and that love you back. Imagine being on your way to a job that you like that fills your bank account every two weeks; all the while fitting into your favorite jeans. Sounds like nirvana to me. Look out world, here you come!
Mira el mundo, aquí vienes. Es Verano, una época mágica del año. Durante verano cuando nos sentimos llenos de sentimientos de posibilidades y oportunidades. Nos sentimos poderosos y libres. Como los capullos que florecen, así mismo lo hacen nuestras esperanzas y sueños. Nos pasamos los días al sol, en una hamaca, en la playa, planeando los pasos a seguir. El verano es mágico y usted está a punto de salir de debajo de ese sombrero, prepárate mundo aquí vienes. Este verano usted va a hacer un inventario de su vida. Va a tomar lo bueno, lo malo y lo feo, y planeará un cambio positivo de rumbo hacia algo mejor. No estará esperando que algo malo suceda para que empiece a cambiar su rumbo –y del mundo- hacia algo bueno. Este rumbo que usted va a seguir se verá como una receta. Los ingredientes serán los cambios que hará para conseguir sus metas y el producto final será usted. Sus metas variarán siendo de largo a corto plazo y serán metas que sean viables (por ej. una meta de corto plazo no es el ser Presidente de los Estados Unidos –de pronto en el largo plazo!). A medida que usted mezcle estos ingredientes hacia una nueva persona, piense cómo va a medir su éxito. Estos “trabajos” lo mantendrán por el camino y reforzarán su trabajo cuando usted diga finalmente que llegó a obtener sus metas. Espero que comparta sus metas con alguien especial y los invite también a compartir sus metas con ellos. Este tipo de red de apoyo ha probado ser de gran ayuda para aquellos que buscan cambiar de actitud –estas personas pueden ser una alarma viviente que haga beep cuando usted se desvíe del camino- algunas veces no podemos hacerlo por nosotros mismos, o si?

MAGIA DEL VERANO A medida que escribe esas potenciales metas, lo invito a considerar las áreas que abajo aparecen que a mi me gusta llamar los Cuatro Fantásticos. Cada año me siento y me aseguro de que estoy trabajando al menos en uno de ellos en cada una de estas áreas –con la confianza de que me llevarán a través del camino correcto. Mientras yo no garantice que los Cuatro Fantásticos me lleven por la vía hacia una vida perfecta, espero que sean un punto de partida para que usted fije sus metas para este verano de 2008: 1) Familia. Soy la mejor esposa, o mejor marido, madre, padre, hija, hijo, persona especial que pueda ser? 2) Educación. Tengo las credenciales de educación necesarias para obtener el trabajo que me hará feliz y me permitirá sostener a mi familia?

3) Financiero. Tengo el dinero suficiente en ahorros para cubrir seis meses de gastos en caso de quedar sin trabajo. 4) Salud. Hago ejercicio al menos por treinta minutos diarios, tres veces a la semana? Definitivamente estas áreas no cubren todas las categorías relacionadas con sus metas, pero espero que haga la relación entre algunos de ellos y los que están en las lista. Le garantizo que trabajando en estas cuatro áreas beneficiará otras metas que pueda tener y por regla general lo guiarán hacia una vida más feliz. Además, creo que si usted define metas realizables junto con estas cuatro áreas, usted se levantará cada día con la sensación del verano en su interior; esa sensación de poder conseguirlo todo, de alcanzarlo todo y de ser el mejor, es posible.
Imagínese levantarse todos los días en una casa con las personas que ama y que lo aman de vuelta. Imagine estar yendo al trabajo que le gusta y que le permite tener llena su cuenta bancaria cada dos semanas; todo mientras se viste con sus jeans favoritos. Suena como Nirvana para mi. Prepárate mundo, aquí vienes!
