LOUISIANA TECH TENNIS COMPLEX

Situated next to Joe Aillet Stadium and the Jim Mize Track and Field Complex are eight lighted tennis courts that make up the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.

Construction on the facility began in March 2008 and concluded five months later in August. Then on Oct. 15, 2008 as part of the fall schedule, the women’s tennis team played and swept Grambling State in their inaugural match at the new facility. A dedication ceremony took place two weeks later as then Tech President Dr. Dan Reneau officially announced it as the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.

In the early hours of April 25, 2019, an EF3 tornado struck the Louisiana Tech campus and delivered almost complete devastation to the tennis complex. Almost a year later on April 22, 2020, work began on repairing the complex and was completed in late July with the resurfacing of the courts, new fencing and new LED lights.

The facility has seen more upgrades recently with the addition of new windscreens/banners as well as a camera streaming system installed.

In 14 spring seasons at the LA Tech Tennis Complex, the Bulldogs have tallied an all-time spring dual record of 82-29 at their home courts (the 2020 dual season was played at the Ruston Sports Complex). The team has had a winning home record in 12 straight spring seasons, including undefeated home seasons in 2014 and 2017.

The program played a school record 15 home matches during the 2022 spring season, registering a 13-2 record. During the season, they also set a new school record with 12 straight home victories (April 13, 2021 - March 19, 2022). The record was set on Feb. 28 with a 4-2 victory over Tarleton State. That record did not last very long as the Bulldogs reeled off 13 straight (April 3, 2022 - April 13, 2023), winning the 13th match against Grambling State which was part of an 11-1 home record during the 2023 spring season.

The LA Tech Tennis Complex has seen the Bulldogs host its first-ever conference match on April 8, 2010 against Hawai’i. They then notched their first-ever conference win at the facility a few days later on April 10 against San Jose State. Another highlight moment came on April 5, 2016 when they played their first ever home match as a nationally-ranked team (No. 73).

AMY SARGEANT HEAD COACH

On Aug. 2, 2023, Amy Sargeant was announced as the new women’s tennis head coach at Louisiana Tech.

Following a highly-successful playing career at Florida State, Sargeant has spent the last decade as an assistant coach with stints at her alma mater as well as New Mexico, Oklahoma, and most recently Clemson where she also served as interim head coach in 2023, guiding the Tigers to one of their most successful seasons on the courts in recent years.

After spending two seasons at Clemson as an assistant coach, Sargeant was named interim head coach on Nov. 17, 2022, immediately established a winning culture that garnered results.

The Tigers ended up recording a 16-12 overall mark, the most wins since 2015. Included in that was an 11-1 start to the spring dual season, the best start since 1986, with one of those victories coming against rival South Carolina, the first such win in eight years. Clemson was consistently ranked in the top 45, peaking as high as No. 29 (highest since 2018).

“I am so very humbled and honored to step into this exciting position,” said Sargeant. “A special thanks to Dr. Eric Wood for his encouragement and trusting me with this opportunity. From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt a connection to the Bulldog Family and the Ruston community.

“Maintaining and enhancing this program’s culture is of the utmost importance. I am excited to embark on this journey to continue building this program with class, integrity, and competitive excellence, both on and off the court.”

The team experienced improvement in her first two seasons on staff, helping the Tigers to a 13-13 record in 2022 and sending the doubles pair of Samantha Buyckx and Ali DeSpain to the NCAA Doubles Championship Tournament. The pair earned their first ranked wins and first top-25 victory in 2022, as well as their first ACC Tournament match victory, a 4-3 thriller over Virginia Tech.

Prior to heading to the Palmetto State, Sargeant was an assistant coach at Oklahoma for four seasons (2016-20). The Sooners improved year after year with her on staff, peaking in 2019 when OU went 17-9 and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015, making it to the Round of 32.

Sargeant was named ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year after helping coach four All-Big 12 selections (most in program history at the time), including Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Oleksandra Korashvili.

She was selected as one of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Summer Collegiate Coaches for the 2019 season, working with the USTA’s top collegiate players as they compete at 25k pro events)

She made the move to Norman, Oklahoma from Albuquerque, New Mexico where she was an assistant coach for the Lobos for one season (2015-16). In that one season, Sargeant helped UNM to a 15-7 record and a perfect 5-0 mark in the Mountain West Conference, earning the No. 2 seed in the MWC Championship where they advanced to the semifinals.

She coached three All-Mountain West Conference selections while helping Lobos reach as high as No. 48 in the country.

Sargeant’s collegiate coaching career got its start at Florida State where she spent two seasons (2013-15) as a volunteer assisting with practices and coordinating player strategies and individualized drills while pursuing her master’s degree.

This came following a four-year playing career (2009-13) with the Seminoles, helping FSU to four straight NCAA Tournaments as well as two runner-up finishes in the ACC Championship.

Sargeant earned Team MVP honors in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and served as a two-time co-captain. As a senior, she became just the fifth player in FSU history to record 30 singles wins in a single season. Her .811 winning percentage ranked as the second-best mark in FSU single-season history.

She also had a stint on the professional ITF circuit, winning the ITA Regional Playoff for the 2013 US Open and competing in the French National League for Club Moulin Les Metz.

Sargeant, a native of Walsall, England, earned both her bachelor’s (Sport Management, 2013) and master’s (Sport Management and Administration, 2015) from Florida State.

ILANA TETRUASHVILI

ASSISTANT COACH

Louisiana Tech Tennis head coach Amy Sargeant announced the hiring of Ilana Tetruashvili as an assistant coach.

Tetruashvili will transition over to the coaching side after spending five seasons on the court for the Bulldogs where she ended her career with 53 dual singles victories, the second most in program history, as well as 40 dual doubles wins, tied for the eighth most in school history.

In her final season as a player at LA Tech, she tallied an 11-2 dual singles record, providing the clinching point five times. She closed the spring on a seven-match winning streak including marquee wins over Toledo and Stetson.

The 2022 season was arguably her best year, registering a team-best 17-5 dual singles record. The 17 wins tied for the fifth most in program history and the most since 2012. She went on to being named Second Team All-Louisiana, a season after earning All-Louisiana Honorable Mention honors.

Tetruashvili was a four-time CUSA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient, a CUSA Academic Medalist, and an ITA Scholar-Athlete.

She came to Ruston from Tel Aviv, Israel.

CLAUDIA ORAVCOVA

ASSISTANT COACH

Claudia Oravcova enters her second season as an assistant coach on the Louisiana Tech Tennis staff.

In her first year as a coach with the program, she helped LA Tech to one of its best seasons in program history. The team registered an overall record of 18-6, the second most victories in school history behind only the 21 wins set 40 years ago in 1982. Included in the season was a program-setting 14-match winning streak as well as a 12-match home winning streak, which was also a new record.

LA Tech ended up totaling 81 dual singles wins and 39 dual doubles wins, both ranking second in program history behind only the 1982 squad. Five different players reached doubledigit singles victories, led by seniors Ilana Tetruashvili (17 wins) and Najah Dawson (14 wins) who were both named Second Team All-Louisiana. Dawson was also voted Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, becoming the first LA Tech player in school history to receive this award.

In the final 2022 ITA Collegiate Tennis Division I Women’s Regional rankings, LA Tech came in at No. 9 in the southern region. This marked the first time since 2016 that the program finished the season ranked in the top 10 of their region.

Oravcova transitioned to coaching after concluding her four-year career on the courts for LA Tech, having been a three-time CUSA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient and an ITA Scholar-Athlete while earning a degree in Management.

She was a consistent winner on the courts, producing 89 career victories. She registered eight dual victories in singles each of the last three springs and racked up 44 career dual doubles victories, tied for the third most in program history.

The Slovakia native recently earned her MBA from LA Tech.

Now is the time to be part of this amazing University and department!”
