Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 8-4 (6-1 WAC)

About The Game

Louisiana Tech (8-4, 6-1 WAC) heads to its first bowl game since 2008 after accepting a bid to the 2011 San Diego County Poinsettia Bowl on Nov. 26. The Bulldogs, champions of the Western Athletic Conference, will face No. 15 TCU (10-2, 7-0 MWC). The Horned Frogs won the Mountain West Conference title for the third consecutive year and are ranked as high as 15th in the nation (coaches poll) while the AP has the Horned Frogs ranked 16th. The game marks just one of four bowl games this year that will see two conference champions face each other.

About the Series

Despite the two campuses being only 289 miles apart, the two teams have never met before this year’s Poinsettia Bowl match-up. Instead, the two schools will face each other for the first time over 1,600 miles away from Tech’s Ruston campus in San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San Diego Chargers.

The Coaches

Louisiana Tech: Sonny Dykes is in his second season at Louisiana Tech and as a head coach in his career. He is 13-11 all-time after recording a 5-7 mark in his inaugural year and guiding the Bulldogs to bowl eligibility and a WAC Championship in his second year at the helm of Tech’s program. This season, Dykes has led a resurgent Tech team from a 1-4 start to seven consecutive wins and a conference championship. TCU: Gary Patteron is in his 11th season as head coach of the Horned Frogs and his 14th season overall at TCU. Since being named the head coach, Patterson has guided TCU to a 108-30 record and this year’s Poinsettia Bowl will be Patterson’s 11th bowl appearance in 12 years and third Poinsettia Bowl appearance overall. Patterson has a 6-4 mark in bowl games including TCU’s 21-19 win over Wisconsin in last year’s Rose Bowl.

Last Time Out

Louisiana Tech 44, New Mexico State 0; Joe Aillet Stadium, Ruston, La.; Nov. 26, 2011 It was a fitting end to a championship run. Louisiana Tech’s defense recorded its first shutout at home since the mid-1990s, the Bulldog offense used a balanced attack led by walk-on running back Hunter Lee and the special teams unit added a score of its own as Tech blanked New Mexico State 44-0 Saturday afternoon under rain-soaked conditions at Joe Aillet Stadium. With the win, Tech (8-4, 6-1 WAC) won the Western Athletic Conference regular season title for the first time since 2001 and earned a trip to the San Diego Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 21 to face either TCU or Boise State. Heading into the day tied with Nevada in the league standings, Tech’s lopsided win parlayed with the Wolf Pack’s 21-17 loss at Utah State gave the Bulldogs the outright league championship belt. Following the final gun, WAC Commissioner Karl Benson presented the championship trophy to the team while Poinsettia Bowl Chairman Bruce Binkowsky extended the invite to the postseason game in San Diego.
