ASSISTANT COACH CHRISTY STEGALL Christy Stegall enters her third year with the Louisiana Tech volleyball team as the assistant coach under head coach Matt Sonnichsen. “We are very fortunate to have Christy as our assistant coach. She provides the best of both worlds because she played for me while she was in college,” Sonnichsen said. “She understands the system and the mentality of what it takes to be a studentathlete. She does all of the things that I can’t. She is very detail-oriented and relates very well with the student-athletes.” In addition to her role as assistant coach at Louisiana Tech, Stegall serves as corecruiting coordinator and team video coordinator. She also assists with various summer camps and coaching clinics throughout the country. Stegall’s defensive knowledge of the libero position and instruction was instrumental in the Lady Techsters leading the WAC with 1769 digs, averaging 14.38 per set during the 2009 season. The Fort Mill, South Carolina native enjoyed an illustrious career at Newberry College from 2004 to 2007. A three-time letterwinner at the libero position for Newberry, she was instrumental in one of the biggest turnarounds in the history of the South Atlantic Conference during her senior season. After the Lady Indians finished 4-30 in 2006, the 2007 squad finished 19-9 overall and in fourth place in the conference as Stegall recorded 246 digs on the year. Stegall finished her career at Newberry ranked ninth all-time with 779 career digs, including a season-high of 322 digs in 2005, which ranks 10th all-time in program history. While at Newberry, Stegall was actively involved in extracurricular activities as she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity, where she served as the Panhellenic President, and the Chi Beta Phi National Science and Math Fraternity. Stegall earned her bachelor’s degree in biology as well as minors in art, math and Spanish from Newberry in the spring of 2008.
