SAN JOSE, Calif. - Phillip Livas tied an NCAA record and Lennon Creer ran for a careerhigh 252 yards as Louisiana Tech held on for a 45-38 shootout win at San Jose State Saturday evening. Livas, who had two returns for a touchdown called back at the same stadium two years ago, ran back a punt 88-yards for a touchdown for his eighth career return for a score, tying a mark set by five other players most recently Clemson’s C.J. Spiller (2006-09). Meanwhile Creer was the workhorse of the Louisiana Tech (5-6, 4-3 WAC) offense, becoming the first LA Tech player since Ryan Moats in 2004 to rush for over 200 yards in a game. With the win, Tech guaranteed a .500 finish or better in conference play for the third time in four years. Despite Louisiana Tech’s pass defense struggling throughout most of the game, it was the secondary that sealed the win. Chad Boyd’s interception with Tech up by one score and 12 seconds remaining in the game sealed a shootout win for the Bulldogs. Boyd, who led the Tech defense with seven total tackles over San Jose (1-11, 0-7 WAC), recorded his fourth interception of the season. “I thought it was a good win and we played hard,” said Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes. “We told our guys all week that we were going to have to play for 60 minutes and that’s what we had to do. We knew it was going to be tough coming out west and playing them. San Jose State is a team that has been playing better as they season has progressed. I’m proud of our team for making plays down the stretch. We really answered the bell when needed.” Most of Creer’s 252 yards came in the first half as a he churned out 203 yards over the first 30 minutes of the game. The Tatum, Texas native ran for three scores in the game “Lennon ran really hard in the first half,” said Dykes. “Tony Franklin did a good job of making adjustments after San Jose State showed us a different look at the start of the game. We did some things that we hadn’t done this year and our offensive line gave Creer some good running lanes. He ran hard and broke tackles tonight.” Livas’ 88-yard punt return for a touchdown marked Tech’s only score in the third quarter as San Jose’s offense keyed in on Tech’s running game and allowed the Spartans to keep in the game. The return of 88 yards marks the third-longest punt return in school history and a career-best mark for Livas. Ross Jenkins was 13-for-29 with 105 passing yards and two interceptions as Tech’s passing game struggled against a tough Spartan secondary. Opposite of that, San Jose’s passing game was on fire as quarterback Jordan La Secla was 35-for-65 for 496 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Louisiana Tech returns to action on Dec. 4 as the Bulldogs host No. 19 Nevada at Joe Aillet Stadium for a chance to become bowl eligible.
