Meet our new patron We’re delighted to introduce Hugh Fraser who has agreed to become our patron. Hugh is a keen supporter of Lapwing’s aims, and has been involved in a number of projects with our students, from film making and voice-overs to volunteering as a learning mentor and driver.

“I am delighted to be the first patron of Lapwing – it’s a fantastic organisation, well balanced, vibrant, forward-looking and doing a great job for the students.”

Hugh is perhaps best known for playing Captain Hastings in the television series Agatha Christie’s Poirot and as the Duke of Wellington in Sharpe. Other TV work has included Edge of Darkness, Edward and Mrs Simpson and Alan Bennett’s The Insurance Man. His film credits include Patriot Games, The Draughtman’s Contract, 101 Dalmatians, Clint Eastwood’s Firefox and The Man in the Iron Mask.

I can talk here, which helps me deal with life in general. It’s given me more confidence and I feel more mature and able to do my own thing now.

Our roots In September 2006 Lapwing started work with 5 students. None of these students were able to access mainstream or other education. From the beginning, our guiding principle has been to put the students at the heart of their educational programme. Lapwing has always been truly personcentred. We consult with each individual student and the significant people in their lives - to discover the individual dreams and aspirations of each student.

Flexible Many of the young people we work with have selfesteem issues and can get anxious about engaging with new activities. So an essential component of each student’s programme is high quality individual support, provided by learning mentors. We work hard to find the most appropriate way to enable our students to engage in the educational activities of their choice. And we take into account that some students may change their minds about their objectives, so we’re flexible when it comes to altering programmes accordingly.

Independent From small beginnings, based on a grant from the Learning and Skills Council and under the operational umbrella of a special school, we are now an independent educational charity and not-for-profit company.

Accredited All Lapwing students follow externally accredited courses. Many of these are tailormade and accredited by external assessors, for example the AQA Unit Award Scheme. Our students have achieved, among others: - Arts Awards, both Bronze and Silver - City and Guilds Literacy and Numeracy from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 (Level 2 equivalent to GCSE) - Employability For Life - ABC Practical Environment and Conservation Skills - A Levels Our students have gone on to mainstream college courses, paid and voluntary employment, and a variety of community activities with confidence, contributing to the communities in which they live.

. . . our first degree In 2014 we learned that Lapwing student Fred has been accepted at The University of Bedfordshire to study a BA (Hons) degree course in Television Production. Fred has ADHD and Autism and missed a lot of school due to frustration and communication challenges. It’s a first for us and an enormous achievement for him.

During 2013/14 Lapwing delivered individual education programmes for 75 students. 3

Lapwing Education is continuing to grow and develop as a vibrant, creative and resilient organisation. We continue to develop imaginative, aspirational, individual education programmes - tailored to meet individual needs - for young people on the margins of the educational system. Young people who have to cope with serious disadvantages: disability, physical and mental health issues and complex family situations. And we do this by working with a broad range of hand picked partner organisations and expert educators. In 2014, we move to new premises and look forward to welcoming new and existing students over the next year.

Education

Before Lapwing I was frustrated, didn’t want to settle down and my social skills were poor. Now com municating with people doesn’t phase me. I never thought I’d have got to college let alone university. Lapwing has given me lifelong help.
