Lapwing grew out of a school setting in 2007 with one simple aim: to help transform the futures and learning opportunites for those marginalised by disabilities, disadvantages and other barriers. So many young people were falling through the gaps and having their education and learning prematurely curtailed. Having helped several students continue with mainstream education, we are now offering our unique programmes to those in schools and academies in Suffolk. Using a system of ‘supported learning’ we aim to mentor and tutor students on a part-time basis, enabling them to continue their learning in mainstream education.

Why Lapwing? Sue Chesworth, Founder and Chief Executive of Lapwing

Why are we called Lapwing? Like a bird, Lapwing flies high, constantly striving to improve existing educational provision and creating new learning opportunities for young people who experience a wide range of disabilities, disadvantage and barriers. Like the wings of a bird, Lapwing provides protection and shelter for the young people we work with. Students who attend Lapwing have often had a succession of negative experiences and they feel marginalised. In summary, Lapwing is an aspirational, supportive organisation which provides individual personalised learning programmes for a wide range of young people who have multiple disabilities and disadvantages. Lapwing listens to the young person. We truly work to put person-centred principles into action. The hard-working staff provide personalised pathways to enable the students to feel included and make a contribution to society. With a background in both mainstream and special education (formerly Head Teacher at Belstead Special School) I understand the challenges of providing a stimulating, relevant curriculum which enables all pupils to engage and achieve positive outcomes from their educational experience. As well as one-to-one and small group tutoring in literacy, numeracy and critical thinking, we offer innovative learning with expert providers. Here is a tiny sample of who we collaborate with: Beyond The Wall, Thornham Magna, Eye, IP23 8HA A restored walled garden offering a broad range of horticultural and conservation activities and training. Brightspace, Ipswich, IP2 Offers a learning environment that is safe and secure. Here students study a range of subjects, develop their IT skills and can even enhance their cooking skills. Eastern Angling An angling coaching, guiding and support service providing Lapwing students with angling experiences structured towards personal development. Green Light Trust, Bury St Edmunds, IP29 4PJ A dedicated group of passionate environmental professionals with many years’ experience in various aspects of environmental education and community outreach. Noise Solution, venues across the county A social enterprise using music and technology with those disengaged from the mainstream by mental health, addiction, offending, challenging behaviour or chaotic lifestyles. The Yard Project, Lowestoft, NR32 2BB Offers our Lapwing students a ‘hands on’ placement so they can undertake maintenance for garden machinery, motorbikes and much more. Case Studies Paige Paige was referred to Lapwing in 2010 aged nearly 17. After being diagnosed with M.E. in 2008 she couldn’t complete her GCSE courses due to her health. Prior to her diagnosis she had been predicted As and A*s in her GCSEs. When planning her Lapwing Programme Paige said “I just want to be in control again.” Paige expressed a wish not to continue with GCSEs because of the stress and disappointment of preparing for exams then not being well enough to sit them. Lapwing put Paige back in control of her education. We arranged for a 1-1 textile tutor to work with her at home for short sessions twice a week. Textiles and crafts has become the focus of Paige’s education programme and she has developed other skills for starting and running her own business including ICT, communication and presentation skills. She has since designed and created a concept and brand, including logo design, slogans and products. She has developed her own blog and, after designing a shop window display of her work and having a successful stand at the 2012 Lapwing Celebration event, has a range of craft items for sale in a high-end gift shop in Ipswich. The House of Elves goes from strength to strength!

Jordan 12 year old Jordan has ASD and other associated difficulties. He was finding it extremely difficult to attend his school. Lapwing has provided 10 hours a week of community-based learning. So far this has included orienteering at Rendlesham Forest, visits to local places of interest such as Shotley and Orford Castle, climbing at Stowmarket Leisure Centre, swimming and horseriding. Throughout his programme Jordan has had one-to-one support from a Lapwing Learning Mentor. Jordan has engaged with the wide variety of activities and learnt many new skills. Lapwing has enabled Jordan to develop his ability to learn in a variety of settings and his self-confidence is improving.
