Welcome to Lapwing We’re delighted to introduce our first prospectus. Since Lapwing began five years ago, we have grown to the point where we want to spread the word about what we do, how we do it and share the remarkable achievements of our students. Importantly, we want to reach more young people, families and those involved in education and the wider community, to make sure that Lapwing is accessible and continues to deliver outstanding results and opportunities for all of our students. As an independent educational charity, we have the flexibility and autonomy to work across an even wider range of young people and abilities, so please get in touch with us if you want to enroll or find out more. About Lapwing What we do

How it works

Lapwing provides individual learning programmes for young people who have complex barriers to learning.

Lapwing is a team of outstanding, innovative educationalists and mentors, who use all their skills to design and deliver an astonishing range of individual programmes.

We help transform our students’ futures by keeping the door to learning open and designing the most inspiring, individual and appropriate learning plans for each young person.

We work with a growing number of partners in the public, private and third sectors to provide quality learning to realise individual aspirations and goals. These include training providers, educational organisations, social enterprises, businesses and specialist professionals.

We provide the support, information and advice needed for our students to take learning forward and reach their potential.

About Lapwing

Core skills & qualifications Core skills

They may begin by being out in the community solely with their Learning Mentor, but this can progress to meeting with other students to take part in activities as part of a small group, developing their ability to work with others, take turns or make decisions as part of a group.

Many of the students have Community Based Learning as part of their programme. The students can expect to have 1:1 support and to take part in a diverse range of activities depending on their individual needs. The activities are offered with the individual in mind and form part of our on-going commitment to developing partnerships which will broaden opportunities for marginalised young people in the community.

In all cases activities are chosen to extend and develop the student’s range of interests based on the principle that building confidence and self esteem through areas of interest leads to learning and achievement.

Our aim is that students work towards achieving skills which will enable and empower them to become more independent, however much support they need and may continue to need in the future. They will be encouraged to start making choices and decisions for themselves.

Your Guide to Lapwing

Activities include travelling on public transport, visiting shops and supermarkets, museums and galleries, taking part in various sporting activities including riding, swimming, wall climbing, walking and cycling. If possible and appropriate, some students may engage in work experience with support.

Critical thinking & Problem solving Again, this is encouraged throughout the Learning Programme designed for each student. Sometimes as part of a group activity, or individually, we involve our students in decision making and debate around everyday as well as unique issues.

Core skills & qualifications

Our students Lapwing supports over 50 students every year; helping them to overcome personal barriers by encouraging them to try new things, make new friends and learn new skills.

At present our students include young people up to the age of 25.

We spend time getting to know our students: marginalised young people with learning difficulties, disabilities and mental health issues – developing close relationships that help us understand what motivates each young person on an individual level.

• Autism • Aspergers/ASD • Learning difficulties • Mental illness • Debilitating illnesses

Some of the conditions relating to complex barriers to learning include:

NOTE: We have an open approach to other barriers, and do not necessarily need a formal diagnosis. Candidates for Lapwing may be in crisis and unable to manage mainstream or conventional educational route.

It’s these relationships that allow us to put together the individual programmes that will help to unlock learning potential. The effect this has on our students is to increase confidence, leading to a degree of independence that may not have been imagined prior to joining Lapwing.

The Lapwing Team Working together

Programme Manager & Coordinators

Our teams work together putting students at the heart of everything we do, shaping programmes to help each student realise their goal. We ensure the experience is supportive and safe, as well as enjoyable.

The students’ programmes are managed by a team (led by a Programme Manager) who make the initial contact with the students and families. The team maintains close contact with students throughout their time with Lapwing, to ensure they are engaged and are progressing. The Coordinators also work with the students on transition to the next stage of education or into the workplace.

Trustees Lapwing is an independent Charity with a Board of Trustees as its governing body, responsible for policy and strategy as well as accountability. Two of the Trustees are also part of the Management Team running Lapwing.

Management Team Headed by Directors Sue Chesworth and Sophy Jones, a professional team ensures the smooth running of Lapwing - not only the development of programme content and student success but also administration, financial planning and management.

The Lapwing Team

Learning Mentors

Tutors

A team of mentors work 1:1 with individual Lapwing students establishing relationships of trust to help build confidence, self esteem and engagement in learning and each individual Lapwing programme. They work with students to draw them out, encouraging them to express their aspirations and long term goals and to recognise their personal strengths and qualities.

Lapwing have a team of tutors working with students in a range of subjects 1:1 or where appropriate as part of small groups. They are flexible in their approach, ensuring they adapt their teaching style to meet the needs of the individual students. They may work in a classroom-style environment, but generally work with students on projects in their field of interest to motivate so that students are inspired to achieve their goals.

They challenge students to accept their difficulties and learn to live more independent lives - interacting with peers in their local communities. If necessary, mentors transport students to programme providers and support them whilst there to participate in activities progressing towards long term goals. They also observe and record students’ progress daily.

Recently, I’ve made a film with the help of Lapwing, which I’m still editing at the moment. It was fun filming it and I have learnt an awful lot about the film-making process.

Arts & Media Title

A Little Bit About Me… Lapwing has helped find the balance between education and health and given me the opportunity to freely explore my passion for textiles and all things creative.

I was diagnosed with M.E in January 2008 whilst I was in my final year at school. However, due to my illness I was no longer able to attend mainstream education. I tried several different routes including online learning, none of which I found were flexible enough or sensitive to the many complications which can arise from M.E.

Already in the short amount of time I’ve been with them I’ve progressed a long way and acquired a lot of new skills and knowledge.

Through Connexions I was put in touch with Lapwing who along with my tutor Lucy was able to offer a tailor built course to suit my needs.

In my opinion I couldn’t have asked for a better programme and all the support Lapwing has provided has created the best possible environment to help me towards my future, as well as aiding me on my way to full recovery.
