At the beginning of every summer, it was pure bliss to abandon the textbooks and enjoy the freedom of sleeping in, splashing in the pool, getting together with friends, and reading for pleasure. After three months the walls would be closing in on me and I’d feel so ready for a more structured life and ready to see more than just a few people. I loved my mom but ‘Enough already!’”

Carolina Flores: La Artista Latina Representa A La Familia, La Cultura Y La Comunidad

El arte latino podría llegar pronto a su vecindario. Los centros culturales, las pequeñas empresas y las organizaciones sin fines de lucro en las grandes comunidades latinas colocan cada vez más arte en sus destacados espacios abiertos. Sus exposiciones complementan en lugar de competir con galerías y museos. La artista latina de San Antonio, Carolina Flores, encontró un lugar acogedor en la firma Overland Partners Architectural en Jones Avenue, a una cuadra del Museo de Arte de San Antonio.

Tim Blonkvist, director fundador de Overland Partners y arquitecto reconocido internacionalmente, invitó a Flores a exponer en la sede de la firma. Blonkvist señala que su trabajo de diseño sintetiza el arte, la arquitectura y el uso de la luz natural. Su biblioteca está repleta de libros de arte y salpica sus conversaciones con referencias al arte moderno y contemporáneo. La firma tiene clientes de todo el mundo, y muchos de los que visitan su cavernoso espacio de oficinas, un almacén renovado, admiran y comentan las obras de arte de artistas visitantes como Flores. Y lo que es más importante, los arquitectos de Overland Partner a menudo recomiendan arte con el que están familiarizados para los edificios que diseñan.

Fort Stockton, la ciudad natal de Flores, es conocida por su pasado histórico cuando el ejército de los EE. UU. luchó en la última de las guerras indias. El Ejército de los EE. Los mexicoamericanos podían comprar en Main Street, pero solo se les permitía operar sus negocios en las calles adyacentes a el principal centro comercial minorista. En la década de 1950, cuando Flores estaba en la escuela primaria, la población de Fort Stockton era de 4444.

Cuando Carolina Flores empezó la escuela no sabía nada de arte. Su papá, que tenía tres trabajos para darles una buena vida a sus hijos, le compró libros para colorear. Pero que ella supiera, nadie en su comunidad pintaba o se interesaba por el arte. En primer grado demostró habilidad para dibujar, habilidad que la sorprendió a ella y a sus compañeros. Al no tener ningún modelo artístico a seguir para emular, los talentos artísticos de Flores permanecieron inactivos durante los siguientes años. Afortunadamente, en séptimo grado, Flores se inscribió en la clase de arte de la Sra. Mary Brown y resurgió su talento oculto. Mary Brown se interesó especialmente en Flores y le brindó clases individuales de pintura en su casa. Durante los siguientes dos años, hasta que la Sra. Brown se volvió a casar y se mudó a Los Ángeles, ese maestro la animó mucho a aprender a dibujar y pintar al óleo.

La escuela secundaria de Flores no ofrecía clases de arte, por lo que ella se dedicó a las clases de música en la escuela y creó proyectos de arte en su tiempo libre. Se destacó tocando la flauta y ganó una beca para la Universidad Sul Ross en Alpine, Texas. En 1968 se transfirió a la Universidad de Texas en Austin, que tenía un departamento de arte muy reconocido. Allí conoció a sus compañeros estudiantes de arte Santa Barraz, Sam Coronado y Manuel “Chaca” Ramírez. La UT Austin El programa de arte tenía más de 700 estudiantes, pero solo unos pocos eran de ascendencia mexicana. Al completar sus estudios en UT Austin, Flores se mudó a San Antonio en 1974 para inscribirse en el departamento de arte recién creado de UTSA. Sus primeras clases fueron ofrecidas en el sótano del Instituto de Culturas Texanas y en la Escuela de Arte del Suroeste. Flores tiene buenos recuerdos de sus clases con Charles Field en UTSA. Cuando sus compañeros cuestionaron su decisión de pintar sobre su cultura e historia, la profesora Field salió en su defensa. Ella le da crédito a la tutoría excepcional del profesor Field por guiarla a través de su programa UTSA. Con una Maestría en Bellas Artes [MFA], Flores encontró trabajo como ilustradora con el programa IDRA del Dr. Jose Carderas en el distrito escolar de Edgewood.

Flores tuvo un gran año en 1989 cuando el Museo de Arte de San Antonio [SAMA] presentó su trabajo en una exhibición “Influencia, Segmento II”. Fue seleccionada por la curadora invitada Lucy Lippard, una destacada crítica de arte de Nueva York, para la exhibición Blue Star IV. En 1990 Flores abrió su Los Aura Studio en el Blue Star Art Complex y se convirtió en artista a tiempo completo. El Embajador de los Estados Unidos en Nicaragua, Oliver Garza, vio su trabajo en el año 2000 y eligió su obra de arte “Amapola” para su residencia oficial en Managua, Nicaragua.

Más recientemente, Flores participó en una importante exhibición en el Museo MexicArte en Austin, Texas. la muestra de arte,Arte chicano, movimiento y más allá: 1960 a 1980, curada en 2022 por la directora del museo, Sylvia Orozco, demostró la amplia gama de actividades creativas durante los primeros años del Movimiento Chicano en Austin. Todas las pinturas de Flores en la exhibición eran de sus años en UT Austin.

Para la exhibición de Overland Partners, “color del valle",Flores explicó que sus colores “son vibrantes, puros y frescos”. En sus pinturas, los espectadores toman conciencia de sus raíces en el oeste de Texas, que ella describe como "imágenes de retratos familiares, paisajes de carreteras y escenas de vecindarios".

Su poderosa representación de una planta de maguey de color verde oscuro que su padre plantó en su patio trasero está rodeada de casas en su vecindario. La pintura transmite la naturaleza en armonía con el desarrollo humano. Los rojos brillantes y las porciones singulares de púrpura brindan un contraste ideal con los tallos largos de la planta más popular de México.

En la pintura “Primos”, Flores presenta a su padre, Ramón Flores, de pie con varias de sus sobrinas y sobrinos. El grupo familiar, posado junto a un molino de viento de madera, se amontonaba mostrando su cercanía. El niño mayor usa un overol que indica la forma en que el trabajo agrícola es un gran parte de la

vida rural. Un cielo azul profundo y árboles estériles comunes en los meses de invierno casi llenan el fondo. Flores señala en su declaración de artista que “En estos retratos y paisajes están las historias que quiero contar con una emoción de color y línea”.

En muchas de sus pinturas, Flores celebra los eventos importantes de la vida: bodas, quinceañeras y reuniones familiares especiales. Un gran retrato de la boda de sus padres en 1939 creado a partir de una foto en blanco y negro llena una pared entera en Overland Partners. En otra pintura, las jóvenes involucradas en una quinceañera celebran la ocasión especial de la mayoría de edad. Agregando un toque de humor, Flores incluye a una niña con un vestido blanco en una quinceañera. baile al aire libre que parece mirar a su alrededor mientras un niño está obsesionado con su teléfono celular. Carolina Flores refleja y honra a su comunidad en sus pinturas. Encuentra que la familia, la cultura y la tradición son más que suficientes para cumplir una de sus creencias: que la vida merece color. El deseo de Flores de encontrar los colores, temas y diseños correctos continúa más de cuarenta años después de que comenzó su búsqueda de la belleza y la historia en sus pinturas.

Nuevo Nombre De La Casa de Los Spurs

La empresa Spurs Sports and Entertainment (SS&E), qué preside Peter John Holt y la institucion financiera Frost Bank con su titular Phil Green (Frost Chairman and CEO), de común acuerdo firmaron excelente patrocinio para cambiar las siglas del AT&T CENTER, por el nuevo nombre de Frost Bank Center, casa del pentacampeón equipo Los Spurs de San Antonio.

Dicho inmueble es propiedad de Bexar County Arenas, propietaria del legendario Freeman Coliseum, ubicado en el mismo perímetro en Houston Avenue y One AT&T Center, del popular sector del East Side de San Antonio.

El estadio cuando fue inaugurado en 2002, tuvo los derechos de la compañía telefónica Southwestern Bell y posteriormente AT&T, ahí en ése ahora

famoso recinto los Spurs llegaron con un trofeo Larry O'Brien NBA ganado en la temporada de 1999 cuando tuvieron su sede en The Alamodome.

Con ése empuje Spurs lidereado por el estratega en jefe Gregg Popovich y The Admiral David Robinson y Tim Duncan, comenzaron la triunfadora dinastía qué posteriormente los llevó a ganar las finales del 2003, ya reforzados con los guardia Tony Parker de Francia y Manu Ginobili de Argentino.

The LULAC 2023 Annual Convention and Expo Champions Economic Empowerment and Social Justice for the Latino Community

Led by the theme, “Saber es Poder,” the annual convention focused on creating the path forward through unity, knowledge, mobilization, and legislation. La Prensa Texas, represented by Community Liaison Ramon Chapa Jr was honored with Press Credentials at LULAC 2023 Convention! The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the nation’s longest-standing and largest civil rights organization, hosted thousands of delegates, speakers, and Latino leaders this past week during its 94th Annual National Convention and Career Expo held at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The event injected more than $13M into the local economy, according to the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber.

In addition to providing informative and educational sessions to members and guests, LULAC hosted its biggest career fair to date which included more than 60 federal agencies and private organizations offering 500+ diverse job opportunities on site. The week ended with a celebratory event featuring American labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta with performances by Little Joe and La Familia and Grupo Control.

During the week, LULAC also hosted its annual Youth Convention, an extensive track of workshops designed to develop young people into

impactful community leaders through positive educational experiences, social events, and civic activities.

Without a doubt, the best speech of the convention was delivered by Bexar County Commissioner and La Prensa Texas Board Member Tommy Calvert! He inspired approximately 1,000 Young Adults from every state and Puerto Rico! The future of LULAC and America!

San Antonio Youth Sing, Dance, and Create Music

Network for Young Artists (NYA) is an arts education initiative that provides cultural performing arts opportunities year-round for students in marginalized communities. The program is run by Executive Director Robert Treviño. The programs promote and enhance Latino Arts and combine them with a diverse and inclusive culture to create a unique environment for personal and artistic growth.

unlimited classes to learn guitar, dance, drums, voice, and keyboard. The small classes are taught by talented instructors in each of the specialized areas. The classes are located in a large space adjacent to the Centro Cultural Aztlan, and students are encouraged to seek opportunities to perform as a group or individually. Two students in the voice and keyboard class have formed a small band and have been invited to perform at community events. Students from the dance group have also had opportunities to perform both classical and modern dance.

Having Fun and Learning in Hot Summer Months

The scorching Texas summer months are a prime time to seek out enrichment activities that can introduce youth to new interests or build on existing talents and skills. Non-profit organizations, such as NYA and the El Progreso Memorial Library, are examples of groups offering low-cost or free learning opportunities.

Uvalde, Texas Finds Success in RISE, READ, and WRITE

The Uvalde Library Rise, Read, and Write Summer Literacy Program focuses on providing learning opportunities for female middle school students. The young girls interact with high-quality texts and artifacts that promote analysis, critical thinking, and comprehension. Over July, students participated in daily reading and writing activities including poetry, fantasy, and works of art. The project targets critical thinking, construction of thought, communication, creativity, composition, comprehension, and reading appreciation. Mentors and student participants keep writers’ notebooks for selfreflection.

Ms. Tammie Sinclair, the Director of Library Archives at El Progreso Memorial Library, initiated the project. The Uvalde School District previously honored Ms. Sinclair as Teacher of the Year. Pre-service Teachers at Sul Ross University trained as writing mentors assist Ms Sinclair. The Bank of America provided major funding for the program with additional support from Drs. Harriett and Ricardo Romo.

"Bank of America is driven to help people reach their goals. The Rise Read Write program shares in this goal by empowering young women to think creatively, explore various literature and writing styles, and amplify student voices“ said Ventura Perez, President, Bank of America San Antonio.

Torres, dijo a La Prensa Texas, qué la jornada final con los triunfos de Broncos vs Yankees 5-4 a favor y Astros vs Reds 3-2, Rieleros 5 Rangers 4, estipulalaron sus

respectivas clasificaciones a la postemporada Santiago Murillo 2023.

Broncos del magnate Roberto Garza quedó en primer lugar, Yankees de Luis Velázquez en 2do. Rieleros de Juan Sánchez y el coach Servando Hernández en 3ro. Astros de Pedro Espinoza en 4to.

Las series semifinales sé jugarán en el campo 2 del estadio Potranco Baseball Field éste domingo 13 de agosto .
