Boat titling roll-out begins this month for Georgia boaters is published by Lanier Publishing, Inc., 3292 Thompson Bridge Rd. #250, Gainesville, GA 30506 (770) 287-1444 Publisher/Editor Alan Hope Production Susan Nish Susan Daniel Creative, Inc. Senior Writer Pamela A. Keene Contributing writers Jane Harrison, Millie Adcox Columnists Glenn Burns, Steve Johnson, Vinnie Mendes, Sara Bagwell. Michael & Sali Duling Travel Editor Bill Vanderford Lakeside is published monthly by Lanier Publishing, Inc. based in Gainesville, GA, with distribution in some 300 locations around Lake Lanier and other areas. Opinions expressed by contributing writers are not necessarily those of Lakeside, its staff or its advertisers. Manuscripts and photographs submitted will be considered for publication. By Pamela A. Keene All Georgia boaters who have boat registrations will be required to title their boats through a rollout program that begins July 1. Titling will occur when owners renew their registration and when boats are bought and sold. “Any boat that’s registered will now also be titled,” said Major Mike England with Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Law Enforcement Division. “When owners renew their registration they will be asked additional questions to complete the titling process. And if any other transactions regarding the boat take place, such as change of ownership, the boat will also then be titled with the new owner.” Owners who have a boat with an outboard motor with greater than 25 horsepower will also be required to furnish the serial number of the motor, plus the make and model of the outboard. Owners will also report financial information, such as outstanding liens and if the boat’s hull has been damaged. The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators is promoting Uniform Certificate of Title for Vessels Act for all

states to brand titles for hull damage to protect buyers when purchasing vessels. “This works the same as vehicle titles, so you know if you’re a purchasing a boat that has caught on fire, been involved in an accident or was sunk,” he said. “That information will be recorded in the Boat Registration database as an electronic E-title.” He said that there are penalties in place for anyone providing false information to obtain a registration or title. “The registration cost will include the title, but if people want a paper copy, they will be charged $10,” he said. “The purpose is to help protect consumers so that they know the boat and motor belong to the person who is selling it and that the title is free and clear. It also protects banks if they are lien holders.” Under the new process, lenders are able to place liens on registered vessels electronically. The law includes language that requires consumers to notify the Department of Natural Resources when an owner upgrades or changes an outboard. “It’s as simple as a phone call to us to update the information in the electronic system,” England said. “And as a

reminder, people who buy and sell boats are required to report these transactions to the DNR within 15 days of the sale to transfer the registration and, after July 1, complete the titling process. Changes of address must be reported within 30 days.” The Boat Titling Bill, HB314, passed the Georgia Legislature in the 2019-2020 session and goes into effect on July 1, 2020, the beginning of the state’s fiscal year. Benefits of titling The Marine Trade Association of Metro Atlanta was instrumental in passing the legislation. The organization, comprising boat dealers, marina operators, boat manufacturers and others in marine-related businesses, has worked for nearly a decade behind the scenes and with the legislature to develop a workable bill. “We are very pleased that the bill has passed,” said Philip Burton, official with the MTAMA, a lobbying and business services support group. “This is an excellent first step toward protecting consumers and those in the marine business, as well as financial institutions. This will also help tighten up new boat purchases so

that the sales tax on new boats will be paid to the local authorities.” Burton said that titling is also intended to help cut down on theft of outboards. As advocates of the titling bill, officials with the Lake Lanier Association praise the passage of the bill. “Passage of this bill is good for everyone,” said John Barker, president of the association, another advocate of HB314. “Requiring boats to be titled will go a long way toward helping us identify owners who may abandon boats in and around Lake Lanier, and it gives us a legal instrument to locate them and pursue legal action for them to remove their abandoned boat, which will save money and environmental damage to the lake.” Barker said that the law will also help stop “title washing,” where an owner may take a vessel out of state to sell or purchase a new boat, with the expectation of circumventing the in-state registration and titling process. “The DNR is making this fairly simple to title your boats,” Barker said. “We realize that it will take several years for all boats to be titled because the program is being rolled out with regSee Title, page 22

Another brief delay granted in water lawsuit By Jane Harrison The brief delay granted last month by a court official should not affect the potential scheduling of Supreme Court oral arguments in the seven-year Florida v. Georgia water rights case. This according to Georgia attorney Craig S. Primis, who requested Special Master Paul J. Kelly give Georgia extra time to respond to Florida’s criticism of Kelly’s January report. Kelly recommended that Supreme Court justices drop the lawsuit in which Florida alleges Georgia consumes more than its share of water in a river system that flows from the Georgia mounKelly tains into the Florida Panhandle. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system. However, Florida attorneys did not so much target the North Georgia lake, the major metro-Atlanta water supplier and economic engine for the region. Instead, they blamed Georgia agricultural water use on the Flint River for low flows downstream. Georgia farmers tap more water than any other entity in the state. Kelly’s report, which may form the

www.lakesidenews.com

basis for a Supreme Court decision, deemed Georgia’s water use “reasonable.” He cited evidence that the cost to Georgia of limiting water consumption would be greater than the benefit of potential additional flow into Florida. In May, Florida attorneys blasted Kelly’s report, accusing him of making short shrift of their appeal to save a perishing way of life in Apalachicola Bay. Florida blames Georgia for low flows on the river that feeds oyster fisheries, a diverse ecology, and the bay’s economy. Georgia’s response to Florida’s criticisms, originally due June 12, was postponed to June 26, after Lakeside’s July edition deadline. Primis asked for an extra two weeks due to the coronavirus shutdown. “The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting state shutdowns have caused difficulties and delays that have affected Georgia’s ability to meaningfully confer with counsel and prepare a timely reply. Moreover, granting this modest, two-week extension would not affect the calendaring of this case for oral argument next term should the Court decide to set this case for oral argument,” the request says. Kelly amended due Georgia’s due date and pushed the deadline for Florida’s surreply to July 27.

Fishing news

A sampling of fishing information and tips from area experts Lake Level: 1071.49 Temperature: 78 degrees Clarity: Main lake clear, creeks and channels stained. Bass Fishing Bass fishing is good. The majority of our fish recently have come from 20 to 25 feet of water. We have focused mainly on points with brush for the majority of our fish. The brush in 20 to 25 feet is now holding more fish and there has been some decent schooling action as well. Top water and swimbaits have been

our main pursuit and will continue to be for the next several weeks. A variety of baits have been working, and the best baits seem to vary daily. Walking, popping, and waking baits are all valid options in the top water arena. So stay on the move and remain versatile with your lure choices. July is a great time to catch top water and swimbait fish on offshore structure as well as targeting deeper fish with a drop shot. This report was filed by Jimbo Mathley, Jimbo on Lanier, www.jim-

boonlanier.com, 770 542 7764. General Fishing Back out on Lanier recently and started on main lake points and hazard buoys that have been good fishing for the past three weeks. We moved out to brush piles in 20 to 30 feet of water. We only caught a few fish but they were pretty good ones. We had to keep moving to find active fish. Seems like all they wanted was our topwater baits. Whopper Ploppers, Walking Boss & Front Runners with Zara Spook trailers all caught fish.

Just a reminder, make sure you make long casts to keep from spooking the fish with your electric motor. This report was filed by “Academy” Jack Becker. Note: Ken Sturdivant is on the Lowrance Pro Staff and teaches electronics along with other fishing skills. All the details for his

Lanier Islands, Margaritaville open for the season By Pamela A. Keene Get out your sunscreen, bathing suits and sunglasses, and pack your bags for this summer’s stay-cation. Lanier Islands and Margaritaville are now open for 2020. The 1,000-acre resort and entertainment complex on Lake Lanier opened in midJune. “The water park and our amenities are now open and it is wonderful to see our staff – and

guests – returning to enjoy all that Margaritaville has to offer,” said Bucky Perry, vice president of operations for Margaritaville at Lanier Islands. “The water rides, restaurants and beach, in fact the whole park, is open following the governor’s safety guidelines. We’re thoroughly and regularly sanitizing surfaces, lounge chairs and restrooms, plus taking all precautions to ensure the safety of our guests.”

Cruises and restaurants on the property are capped at 50 percent of capacity. Legacy Lodge, the Lake Houses and Villas have reopened. The hotel’s signature restaurants – Sidney’s and Bullfrogs – are now offering dine-in service. “The weather has been so pretty and it feels like we’re back to some sense of normalcy See LLi, page 54

Rockin’ to preserve Lake Lanier’s island shorelines By Pamela A. Keene This spring, the Lake Lanier Association reached another milestone in its Islands Rip Rap/Shoreline Erosion project. Over the past 18 months, the organization has completed shoreline rip rap on an additional seven islands, including Three Sisters near the main channel. “With the completion of this major project, we have now completed a dozen islands since this initiative began,” said Jennifer Flowers, executive director of the Lake Lanier Association. “With all of the rain and high water, in addition to the wave action from increased boating activity, many of these islands were eroding into the lake. Our goal is to protect them and to help reduce siltation.” As with many of the association’s projects, the group depends on business partnerships. Marine Specialties Inc. is often involved in the group’s initiatives. “We have supported the Lake Lanier Association in many of its endeavors,” said David Bahn with Marine Specialties in Gainesville. “From helping with Shore Sweep and working on the abandoned vessels and derelict docks to this

worthwhile preservation of the lake’s islands, we strongly believe in the work the association is doing and are proud to be of assistance. “MSI is committed to helping with projects at Lake Lanier to help reduce erosion and siltation and maintain the lake’s water quality,” Bahn said. “We work here and live here and we want to continue to be good environmental stewards of this popular and vital natural resource.” Other contractors for the Shoreline Erosion Project included Vulcan Rock, Grizzle Trucking, Boat Dock Works and H&M Trucking. Funding has come from public and private sources, including SPLOST funds from area governments, plus Gwinnett County Department. of Water Resources, Hall County, the Bagwell Family Foundation, the City of Gainesville Department of Water Resources, the City of Cumming Utilities, as well as the US Army Corps of Engineers. Fieldale Farms, Pilgrim’s Pride Poultry Companies, and Sunrise Cove Marina have also made special contributions. For this most recent installa-

tion on the seven islands, more than a mile of rip rap has been installed, the equivalent of more than 6,100 linear feet. Four islands near Old Federal Park and the three Three Sisters Islands completed this second stage. More than 9,600 tons or 19.2 million pounds of stone was used to armor these seven islands. Since the inception of the Shoreline Erosion Project in 2014, the association has protected the shorelines of 12 islands and just under two miles of shoreline. “This project is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished for the lake through joint partnerships, “said Rich York, LLA board member and manager

alone. However, together we were able to protect these islands from disappearing completely.”

Flags across Lanier during Flag Day celebration By Pamela A. Keene Saturday, June 14 was Flag Day, a sort of warm-up for celebrating the patriotism of the Fourth of July. American’s Boating Club Atlanta hosted its first 2020 on-the-water event since the COVID-19 shutdown by assembling a Flag Day Boat Parade. Nine boats, ranging from

cruisers to pontoons, gathered at Buford Dam, made a swing through the waters at Lanier Islands before gathering for lunch and an impromptu awards ceremony at University Yacht Club’s Carswell Pavilion. Commander Dave Fuller recognized members who have been contributing behind the scenes to support membership and education as well as

to prepare for getting back on the lake for existing members and prospective new colleagues. For more information about America’s Boating Club Atlanta, visit atlantasboatingclub.com. The group will be resuming social activities and educational classes this summer.

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK Paddling, rowing activities, Food Truck Fridays return to LLOP By Jane Harrison Valerie Pflug admitted to feeling “very excited” about being the torch bearer for the re-opening of Lake Lanier Olympic Park July 3. That’s when the paddle guide will lead one of the first public events at the former Olympic site since coronavirus closures began in March. Her Moonlight Paddle, organized by the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, heralds a return of activities to the venue left mostly vacant for months. Following in her wake, the Lake Lanier Rowing Club expected to train beginning rowers in Learn to Row sessions, kayak newbies can learn to paddle, kids looked forward to fun times in LCKC’s Kayak Day Camp, and food trucks and music return to the plaza for Food Truck Friday July 10. The closure silenced a season of rowing regattas, canoe/kayak Olympic trials, and community events at the park famous for drawing crowds. When Pflug leads a troupe of about 15-20 kayakers on a moonlit paddle on the Chattahoochee arm of the lake, it will likely be a calm, quiet

ceremony cheered only by chirping crickets. “The Moonlight Paddle is my favorite thing to do” at LLOP, Pflug said. The nighttime excursions attract not only locals, but many visitors from metro-Atlanta on their first outing on Lake Lanier. Online searches bring them for a different kind of date night or family activity. “They always have a lot of questions,” Pflug said, about animals, birds, fish, and the lake in general. Led by Pflug perched high on a stand-up paddle board, participants launch LCKC single or double recreational kayaks for a venture from the LLOP boathouse docks westward toward Laurel Park. Or, Pflug might take them under Clarks Bridge for a tour to “Gilligan’s Island.” Perhaps they’ll paddle up the Chattahoochee. “It depends on the group,” Pflug said. She lets their abilities and enthusiasm determine the destination and how long the trip will last. Usually it’s an hour or two but has extended to three hours. Pflug provides a takeout opportunity at the boathouse for any who need to go home early.

Normally, folks can just show up for the monthly outings, but this year LCKC asks that people register in advance. The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 3 and August 7; 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4 and Oct. 2. Cost is $20 per person and free to LCKC members. See www.lckc.org. A week after the first Moonlight Paddle, work weary celebrants are expected back on the plaza for the return of Food Truck Friday. LLOP Executive Director/Gainesville Tourism Director Robyn Lynch said the original plan was for double-the-fun, a Food Truck Friday combined with the annual Beach Bash. “But with (coronavirus) restrictions, we are just having the normal Food Truck Friday,” she said. Friday favorite vocalist/guitarist Chad Bowmar will entertain on the lower plaza. Food and beverage trucks will line up on the upper plaza. “We are encouraging attendees to bring their own chairs and picnic blankets,” Lynch said. Guests can reserve a table for six on the grandstands for $35. See Lakeside’s LLOP Calendar for more events.

Poker Run canceled this year; charitable donations accepted By Pamela A. Keene The 12th Annual Pirates of Lanier Poker Run has been canceled for 2020. Lanier Partners, the event’s organizing group, will still make donations to the four children’s charities it benefits: Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the EdmondsonTelford Center. “As a board, Lanier Partners/Pirates of Lanier has decided, with regret, to cancel the event this year,” said Barkley Geib, president of the organization that has raised more than $2 million for children’s charities since its inception. “With the uncertainty of the challenging and changing situation of COVID-19 and our goal to ensure the health and safety of our supporters, volunteers and the community, we have not made this decision lightly.” The group is offering three options for those who have already registered: • Donate your fees this year so the group can help support its

children’s charities, who are in great need of additional funding • Roll your 2020 fees directly to register for next year’s event, maintaining all the purchases you have indicated on your registration • Request a full refund of the 2020 fees that you have paid, which will be processed back to your method of payment. “As always – and we hope that others intending to be here will do this – you can go online and make a donation of any amount to help the children,” Geib said. “Even though the event for this year is canceled, we will donate to these charities this year, especially in light of the health situation we’ve had with COVID-19 and the other financial challenges these groups are facing.” Geib said the board considered several options for keeping the event in some format, but too many uncertainties made keeping the event in place for this year nearly impossible. “Recent spikes in June across the country, including several

states in the Southeast, the issue of people traveling from out of town and the very active agenda we had planned for the weekend are simply not suited for these uncertain times,” he said. “Also, we want to abide by and consider local and national guidelines, as well as the information we have from the CDC and Gov. Kemp’s office. We hope all of our supporters will understand and continue to support us.” The Pirates of Lanier Poker Run has become a highlight of summer on Lake Lanier for more than a decade. It has raised funds to benefit several area children’s charities – Camp Sunshine, Camp Twin Lakes, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier and the EdmondsonTelford Center. “We truly appreciate everyone’s continued support of our event and these children’s charities and their important work,” he said. For more information, visit the group’s Facebook page or its website at www.piratesoflanier. com, where donations are being accepted online.

A couple of examples of poetic justice

Several years ago, I had a sofa. It was Danish Modern, all teak and black vinyl and extremely comfortable, both for sitting and sleeping, until the cat tinkled on it! I tried everything I could think of to get rid of the odor to no avail. Finally, I bought a new sofa and put the old one out on the front lawn with a sign saying “FREE” in big letters. It sat there for two weeks and no one touched it. Then I had a brainstorm. I put a sign on it reading “$50.” It was gone the next morning! I hope whoever got it had a better sense of taste than of smell. I was simply happy to get rid of it. More recently one of my neighbors had a Honda Shadow motorcycle dating from the late 1970s. He had owned it since it was new, and it was a thing of beauty, painted metal flake purple and in pristine condition, almost museum quality. The only problem was the motor would crank but would not run properly. He asked to borrow my motorcycle trailer to take the bike down to the repair shop. I helped him load it onto the trailer and off he went. The shop said they couldn’t

side, they had removed their ski masks, since they knew they were going to take the cameras! They did not realize that the videos were stored in a remote location! When the staff came in the next day, they called the police and turned over the camera footage. They also shared it with the local newspaper who posted it on their website! Within two hours a dozen people had ratted out the crooks, including the sister of one of them! As John Wayne said, “You can’t cure stupid!” On the lake itself there is very little crime if you don’t count “boating under the influence.” Occasionally, you hear someone got their kayak stolen and we did have some fishing poles stolen in our cove but that’s the only thing that comes to mind. However, several years ago, I had a friend who owned a little skiff with an outboard motor. One day he went down to take her out and found that someone had stolen his gas tank! He was mildly annoyed but was not going to let it spoil his day. He went down to the marine supply store, purchased a new gas tank, filled it up, and was out on the lake with

only about an hour and a half lost. The following week he went down to the boat and found that someone had stolen the new gas tank! Now he was really annoyed! Since the price of gas was over $5 per gallon at the time, he figured the thieves were just after the gas! An old gas tank had been knocking around his shed for years that would not fit the current motor. He filled it half full of gas and added a bottle of Karo Syrup. (WARNING! Do not try this at home! Any sugar in the fuel is devastating to an internal combustion engine!) He left the gas tank on the boat and when he went down to check the next week, yup, the tank was gone. The greatest thing about this type of thief is that he pulls this kind of stuff so often that when retribution comes, he does not know where it came from! In other words, “Time wounds all heels!” Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years. His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. His favorite line: “You can’t make this stuff up.”

INCREASED INTEREST IN NORTHEAST GEORGIA HISTORY CENTER Center’s online programs about the past attracting thousands due to pandemic Shore Lines From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Jane Harrison cast of characters – including a demure educator with a stunning smile, a quick and articulate tech whiz, and a witty twice-degreed historian – inhabited a Gainesville collection of relics during the coronavirus shutdown and exploded it into cyberspace. While almost everybody stayed home, staff at the Northeast Georgia History Center beamed historic figures like Thomas Jefferson, Clara Barton, and Juliet Gordon Low onto screens of thousands of housebound students and curious viewers yearning for historical intrigue. Through webisodes, webcasts, livestreams, and podcasts, the Academy Street museum reached beyond its namesake region to the West Coast and across the Atlantic, developing a cumulative following of 10,000. Demand for programming pushed Executive Director Glen Kyle and staff into high performance mode, literally as they donned tricorn hats and bum pads, to present the weird and the staid, brave and timid, and colorful palate of characters that paint American history. What resulted is a fun, innovative, interactive approach to the past that mixes thespian talents and homemade costumes with high tech methods and deep knowledge to excite young students and maybe pro-

The shutdown “was really good for our major outreach,” Kyle said last month out-of-costume in a plaid shirt and jeans in the museum atrium. When the doors closed, “many things expanded that may not have otherwise.” He credits a small energetic staff, competent team, and supportive board for putting the center near the frontlines of education about America’s past. “There’s an advantage to having a small team and a small museum … we’re expanding like a start-up,” said Libba Beaucham, Media and Communication Director. “This is the first time people have heard about us outside of Georgia.” Beaucham, who also doubles onscreen as founder of the Girl Scouts, pours her energy out in the center’s Cottrell Digital Studio, heart of its cyber being. She started promoting it to a national audience when the shutdown began. Followers across the U.S. Not burdened by bureaucratic strangleholds, creativity and ingenuity flow. By not getting “bogged down” in red tape, the center surged “years ahead of many bigger museums,” Kyle said. That’s where Education Director Marie Walker’s lessons come to life. A costumed British Redcoat in studio might appear to pace outside a 1770s New England edifice, thanks to a backdrop projected onto the studio green screen. Not only that, characters like Benedict Arnold can “see” the audience and answer questions on-screen through video conferencing.

History of the history center From Executive Director Glen Kyle: Jim Mathis, Sr. (Hall County native instrumental in founding Gainesville College (now University of North Georgia’s Gainesville Campus) and the former Home Federal Savings & Loan, kept a display of historical relics in the atrium of the bank. He worked with the city to move his exhibit into the old Green Street fire station, creating the Georgia Mountains History Museum. An open house raised funds to seed the Northeast Georgia History Center, which opened on Brenau University property in 2004. Prior to that, Mathis helped arrange the removal of a vandalized Cherokee cabin from just north of Ellijay to the Gainesville site in 1995. The reconstructed cabin sits next to an old Gainesville blacksmith shop Mathis also had moved to the site. Many of the artifacts and photos were donated by area residents. Portions of the center bear names of prominent local donors and honorees. Although on the Brenau campus, the center is an independent non-profit entity, not owned by Brenau. Lake Lanier Exhibits: The very shovel used in the groundbreaking ceremony of Buford Dam is affixed to the wall near the 1949 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers model of the massive project. Exhibits depict life along the Chattahoochee and Chestatee rivers before the lake flooded homes, farms, small towns and native American graves and artifacts. Displays also look at fish native to the lake and tributaries. Other notable Exhibits: Face jugs and creations from Mossy Creek potters, such as Lanier Meaders, highlight the Frances Mathis and Phil Mathis Folk Art Gallery. An interactive tornado simulator and numerous photographs depict the 1936 tornado that devastated downtown Gainesville. The Executive Director’s Favorites: Two items, one large and one just 36 inches, get Glen Kyle’s picks. “My favorite is the Chief Whitepath cabin … it takes you back to an early period in this region’s history,” said Kyle, whose childhood interest in history was likely sparked by the log cabin originally situated a few miles south of Blue Ridge, where he grew up. He’s also enamored with an artifact from the peak of an era that spawned stock car racing: a yardstick imprinted with “Don’t Drink Moonshine. If you want to report it contact Federal Agents in Atlanta,” plus a phone number. July historical tidbit from Glen Kyle: Northeast Georgia Native Americans supported the British during the Revolutionary War because the redcoats prohibited settlement into their territory and profited from tribal trade. Folks in Georgia didn’t even know there was a revolution until August 1776. Newsprint traveled slow. History Center Information: Planned re-opening was in late June. She especially enjoys portraying Clara Barton, Civil War Angel of the Battlefield and founder of the American Red Cross. Kyle transforms into a complex and analytical Thomas Jefferson or smart-alec grandfather, Benjamin Franklin, among others. Atlanta actors hit center stage, too. Boiled ham, anyone? The crew also gets cooking, both for online audiences and onsite Family Days. Walker’s pioneer dinner rolls toasted in a cast iron pot get done in time for web viewers to hunger for, but not savor. During Family Days at the center, hundreds of visitors drop in to see and sample early American culinary specialties, like ham boiled all day over an open fire. July 2020

Recalling the record-breaking deluge of July 2005 Hope everyone enjoyed those cool temperatures we saw in June. From what I can see right now, we are heading into a pattern that will feature above average temperatures and above average rainfall. July, on average, is the wettest month of the year. Based on the past 30 years, we usually see about 5.27 inches of rain. However, back in 2005, we had 14.63 inches of rain. On July 9 and 10, 2005 Hurricane Dennis churned through the eastern Gulf of Mexico toward the Florida Panhandle. The center of circulation passed through northwestern Florida, western Alabama, into northeastern Mississippi. This track was far enough west to spare most Georgians from any wind damage. However, Dennis brought buckets of rain to the state which led to some flash flooding around the Atlanta metropolitan area. Eventually many rivers rose above flood stage. The outer bands of the storm arrived in northern and central Georgia late on Saturday the 9th of July. Rain continued through Sunday (the 10th) before tapering off on Monday (the 11th). A particularly heavy and persistent band of rain caused rainfall of 8-12 inches in a north-south band that stretched from around Americus through Thomaston into the western half of the Atlanta metro area. Severe flooding occurred Sunday night and Monday in Cobb, Douglas and Clay-

ton counties and in portions of Cherokee, Fulton, Fayette and Coweta Glenn counties. Water levels Burns along Sweetwater Creek near Austell reached record levels, cresting at Lanier a height of 21.8 feet Outlook around noon on July 12. This exceeded the previous high water mark of 20.0 feet which occurred back in July of 1916! It was a wicked storm. The tropical weather season was off to a rambling start, as we had three named storms before the hurricane season even began on June 1. July is actually a relatively quiet month for hurricanes. August and September are brutal. Those are when we see the big storms form near the West Coast of Africa. They can and do develop into monsters as they cross the ocean by “feeding on the warm ocean waters with very little wind shear to stop them. I am not looking forward to next month. In the meantime, July is when I get concerned for the boaters out enjoying the lake for what begins as the warm sunny day but ends in a hail of rain and lightning. So many times I have seen people unaware of approaching storms only to be racing back to the ramp as one of our massive July storms moves down the lake. Download our Severe Weather Team 2 App before you go! I will alert you well before a storm approaches so you can take action to protect you and your family. Lightning is the major concern during summer storms.

Check out The Lake House to refresh your home’s look By Pamela A. Keene There’s a new furniture and interior décor store in town that has brought together the charm of the East, as in India, and the wisdom of upcycling. The Lake House, located in Cumming at 4910 Browns Bridge near Publix at Ga. 400, is bringing a new style of home furnishings to Northeast Georgia for lake houses, mountain homes and houseboats. A sideboard made of distressed colorful doors converts to a compact, utilitarian barware and liquor cabinet with room for wine storage, glasses and bar accessories. A large natural-colored armoire with remnants of chalk-white paint creates extra storage in a guest room or dining area. A cabinet featuring glassfront doors with hand-rubbed finishes provides a place for books that doubles as a side table. “When my business partner and I saw this amazing furniture on a buying trip to India last year, we knew we had to bring it to Georgia and the South,” said Judy Beard, partner in The Lake House furniture store. “And then, one day when I was driving near the lake, I found the perfect location

in a white house on Browns Bridge Road in Cumming. Everything just came together.” Beard, who holds a degree in interior design from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, spent the greater part of her career as a flight attendant for American Airlines. She also kept her hand in interior design on a small scale and kept abreast of market shows and trends. Five years ago, she met her business partner Charlie Metz, a long-time furniture importer and the two decided to go into business together, blending his import experience with her background in design. “When Charlie and I saw this

furniture, we both realized how perfect it would be for lake and mountain homes. And, it’s so eclectic it is great for freshening the look of a guest room, a living area or any other part of a home.” Pieces range from island tables and consoles to weathered-looking trunks and chests of drawers. Rustic folding Indian wedding tables can provide extra seating for impromptu gatherings. For decorating decks, patios and outdoor spaces, The Lake House offers a wide range of dock pilings decorated with rope. The first known use of this idiom, at least nautically, was when ships at sea would proceed past Cape Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa, or Cape Horn, the very end of South America. Surface conditions on the oceans in those areas are normally very rough with intense waves, currents, and wind. The task is a tremendous challenge for clipper ships in those extreme conditions and even the biggest vessels on the water today have difficulty properly navigating. Once you made it safely around the point, the waves would begin to diminish and wind to calm. That meant better things were coming, at least regarding the state of the sea. It has always been considered by mariners around the world as one of the most demanding bodies of water to pilot below each continent on the planet, since recorded maritime records or logs were kept describing the dangerous transit. If you want to witness an interesting passage of a ship around Cape Horn search the topic on YouTube. This expression, “Turning the Corner,” in addition to its nautical

EAGLE COUNT LOWER IN NORTH GEORGIA Some nest sites on Lanier reportedly inactive or unsuccessful By Jane Harrison Young bald eagles that fledged months ago on Lake Lanier likely are not vacationing on the lake. The birds that got flight lessons over Lanier’s blue waters may have taken off for summer on the Great Lakes. The few eaglets hatched from three active nests at the North Georgia lake in late winter probably flew north in June and, pending safe voyages, may return in August, according to Georgia eagle spy, Bob Sargent. As director of the eagle survey for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Sargent gets to fly in a helicopter and peer down through binoculars on nests built by the national symbol of freedom and courage. “It’s inspiring to study these birds. It’s a highlight of my field year,” Sargent said in June, a day after birdwatchers reported viewing eaglets soaring on the lake. Georgia’s top eagle scholar believed the Lanier eagles were getting ready for a long journey, leaving their parents on home waters. After they fledge on Lanier in early spring, juvenile eagles stay with their parents a few weeks and then may head north, Sargent said, possibly to the East Coast, Hudson Bay or the Great Lakes. They fly south again in late August. Transmitters on some eaglets indicate the adolescent birds get life lessons far from the nest before coming back. DNR eagle survey results in 2020 showed that eagle nesting remains strong in the state, but the number of successful nests and young fledged in the northern part of the state declined this year compared to long-term averages. Sargent said the state likely had 200 or more eagle nests for the

sixth straight year, despite the lower number in North Georgia. Sargent speculated that substantial rainfall from January through March likely contributed to the region’s lower nest productivity. Hungry racoons and invasive great horned owls also likely took a few. Checking by helicopter in January, March and early April, Sargent counted 117 eagle nest territories in three regions of the state: the six coastal counties; a section of east Georgia bounded roughly by interstates 16 and 85 and the South Carolina line; and the counties north of Atlanta. This year’s survey results also included seven nests monitored in other areas by volunteers or DNR staff. In North Georgia, roughly a line north of Atlanta from Hall County westward to Floyd County, Sargent counted 15 occupied nest territories, with seven fledging at least one eaglet and 11 young fledged. Sargent found success rate for producing an eaglet declined 30 percent lower than average. The total number of fledglings counted declined sharply. On Lanier, Sargent has spied on five eagle nests in his five years of surveying: two on the north end near Don Carter State Park, one “off the beaten path” opposite Gainesville Marina, one near a park peninsula in Gwinnett County, and another on an island on the south end. Of those, the south lake nests were either not used or not successful this year. Eagles did not return to one near the state park. It’s possible that unused nests are spare homesites the parents did not choose this year. Sargent has observed that the territorial birds

How to help with the eagle survey The best opportunity to see bald eagles is to look for them on islands and on large reservoirs and rivers during winter months, because the state’s eagle population increases during this time of year due to an influx of wintering eagles from the north. If you find an active eagle nest, report its location to bob.sargent@dnr.ga.gov. Stay at least 330 feet away from an active eagle nest in compliance with federal guidelines. Bald eagles return to their nesting territories in early fall and usually lay eggs between December and February. The eggs hatch about 35 days after being laid and the young leave the nest 11 to 14 weeks later, typically from late March to early May but occasionally in June. Most eagle nests are located just below the upper canopy of trees. About 95 percent of nests are built in living, mature pine trees. There are records of bald eagle nests that exceeded 15 feet in height and weighed over 2,000 pounds.

snakes, too, he said. The young eagles exiting Lake Lanier in June and heading home in August look much different from the majestic birds seen as the national emblem. Young bald eagles do not have white heads and tails. In fact, the species does not exhibit these characteristics until it is four to five years old, which is when it achieves sexual maturity. First and second-year eagles have mostly brown heads and tails, white wing pits and mottling on the wing. It’s Canada geese season around Lake Lanier The Canada goose lives in a variety of habitats, often in locations that are in close proximity to people, such as suburban neighborhood ponds, office complexes, parks, and other developed areas. And of course, Lake Lanier. This can become a frustration factor for homeowners and landowners when geese begin to molt in the summer, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD). “Each summer, in late June and early July, I typically get a lot of calls about Canada geese,” says WRD State Waterfowl Biologist Greg Balkcom. “This uptick in calls and questions goes hand-in-hand with the fact that geese go through a molting process in summer, during which they lose their flight feathers and are in the

ability to fly and will likely move on. However, if geese continue to cause problems, here are a few tips to try: • Harassment: First, try a variety of harassment techniques (also called hazing), including mylar balloons, noise PHOTO BY GEORGIA DNR/WRD makers, or even trained herding It’s Canada geese season. dogs. I’d rather be blue – blueberries, that is

Things are pretty blue around our house these days, with the prolific output of our dozen or so blueberry bushes. From just 10 days of harvesting beginning in mid-June, Rick and I have picked nearly 55 pounds, our biggest yield ever. And that only puts us about one-third of the way into the picking season. Our friends are loving the bounty of our harvest and our freezer is bursting at the seems with quarts of luscious berries. We are willingly sharing and some friends even suggest that I set up a stand at a local farmer’s market. Here’s the secret: feed them at least twice a season and water them deeply once a week. Use a slow-release acidic plant fertilizer, such as Milorganite or Holly-Tone for azaleas, camellias and other acid-loving plants. Read the package instructions for amount and method of application; usually with my mature plants approaching six feet tall, I’ll use about one-half to threequarters of a cup spread at the drip line. Caution: With any granular fertilizer application, do NOT apply to the root/trunk/branch

Pamela A. Keene Curb Appeal

n MORE INFO: Email: pam@pamelakeene.com union. Keep fertilizers at least one foot away from the trunks or you will most likely kill your plant. Fertilizer burn is not pretty. I had an inexperienced garden helper last spring who literally dumped handfuls of 10-10-10 onto the centers of a prized azalea, my specimen Edgeworthia/Chinese Paper Plant, and a very special Rising Sun Redbud, killing them all within a week. I learned a lesson; if you want to fertilize properly, hire a certified landscape professional, or educate yourself before you begin. Back to the blues Blueberries are the ideal fruit crop for Georgia. in fact, blueberries, now planted on former tobacco fields in South Georgia,

have surpassed peaches as the state’s most productive commercial fruit crop. They’re easy to grow. The key is having at least two different cultivars of plants to allow for cross pollination. Rabbiteye is the most common variety and it is available in several different cultivars, including Climax, Powderblue, Premier or Brightwell. Blueberries are disease-resistant and don’t attract many insects. The plants thrive in full sun but can produce in some shade, through the yield is not as high. For pruning and growing advice, check out the free publications online at https://extension. uga.edu/publications.html. You’ll find expert guidance for all your garden needs and questions. Another blue shout-out. Our mophead hydrangeas are blooming non-stop right now, mostly blue with a couple of shrubs bearing deep violet clusters. Planted on the north side of our home in morning sunlight, the bushes are loaded. Over the past four years, we’ve dumped granulated lime and spent fireplace ashes on them to try and turn them all purple or even pink. Finally, they are on

their way to a meaningful shift, but it will be a few more seasons before my color change is complete. Last month’s column response Thanks to two readers who wrote about their own squirrel adventures and solutions. Lori Perdue of Cumming wrote with several tips, including relocating the feeders to a spot that’s protected by her climbing rose bushes. “Seems they don’t like thorny feet on the way up or falling after attempting to jump into said sharp vines. So far so good.” George Daves sent me ideas for building sheet-metal baffles to mount on the poles. Cone-shaped, mounted below the feeders with the widest part facing the ground, the baffles are fairly easy to make and can be effective. George says he gets the sheet metal from a box retailer and attaches the hand-cut cones to the poles with hose clamps. “I fabricated this cone on my bird feeder pole over four years ago and a squirrel has not been able to get around it since.” Let’s talk gardening I love hearing from readers with ideas, questions and feed-

Blueberries.

Wheat - it’s not just for making bread! That’s right, there are wheat beers available and you should add some to your summer plans. Wheat was an early part of beer making, as were many other different cereal grains. Beer was not only good, it was good for you. Brewing beer dates back some 13,000 years plus, depending on which researcher you ask. Nutrition was hard to come by other than animal proteins, yet beer was a good source of nutrients. Also, it was generally safer than the water until semi modern times. Beer served another purpose – grain storage. As humans developed into hunter gatherers, they became decent farmers. As grain was produced more and more, beer was an effective method of storing crops. Sitting upon Weihenstephan Hill, located at Freising, just northeast of Munich, are the words “Oldest Brewery.” Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery is over 1,000 years old, and where it was all started by Benedictine Monks. Wheat beers will also have a much lower IBU (International Bittering Units) level as hops are not a major component. If you are not into the IPA scene, these are going to be your new favorite! The hazy comes from yeast that is not filtered out, but intentionally included. This yeast will continue to cause some fermentation even in the bottle. Wheat beers will generally have a bit more carbonation. Some will have more yeast than others, and it may even pile up in the bottom of the bottle but it is harmless. In proper form, pour most of the bottle into your glass then swirl the remainder before finishing your pour. This will put all of the yeast into your glass for the full scent and taste enjoyment of the beer. A common beer that is easy to find, this beer is one of the consistently top rated wheat beers in the world. Hefe Weissbier – It comes in at 5.4 percent ABV, and is very well balanced on the tongue. The beer starts with a spicy clove flavor mingled with banana and malt flavors. This beer is also going to have a big yeast flavor and aroma, there is no doubt what style of beer you are drinking. Erdinger Dunkel – A great tasting Dunkel, my favorite hands down. This 5.3 percent ABV utilizes dark malts with the wheat and gives a full-bodied flavor that you don’t want to miss out on. Your tastebuds will pickup many different flavors in this beer, and they will be happy about it! Small projects can have big impacts throughout your home Most people have a mental list of “if money weren’t an issue” renovations they would tackle throughout their homes. However, just because most of us are not winning the lottery any time soon doesn’t mean we can’t do any improvements to make our homes more customized for our living. Many times, small projects on small budgets can make a huge impact and will make your house feel more your home. If you don’t personally have the skills to do some of these small home improvement projects yourself, consider hiring a handyman to cross some of these items off of your “Honey-Do” List. The following are five small projects that can be accomplished in a few days with, or some without, the help of a handyman: 1. Paint: Few projects can transform a house as dramatically and inexpensively as paint. Whether you paint your front door or the trim in your entire house, the change can be dramatic. Even if you’re considering selling your home, paint is one of the top recommendations to freshen up your space and give you a good return on investment. In addition, the right color of

Although painting is a relatively simple task, for those tall, twostory entryways or second floor exterior work, it may be safer to hire a handyman with proper insurance. 2. Trim & Moulding: Although it looks like a simple task, installing trim and moulding is very tedious and takes a lot of precision to do well. If you want to add a little bit of flair to your dining room, consider adding a chair rail or wainscoting. Crown moulding often adds height to

rooms. Beadboard in master bathrooms or half baths can add charm and texture. If you aren’t a perfectionist with lots of patience – you definitely want to leave the installation to a pro. 3. Flooring: A new floor can lend a fresh vitality to any room. For the bathroom specifically, using today’s cost-effective resilient luxury vinyl plank or vinyl tile offers an attractive option for a high-end appearance, but without the high-end price tag. It comes with the latest styles and patterns in a wide array of colors, designs, and textures. For other areas of the house, hardwood floors could be a good solution, adding warmth and comfort with the benefit of easy cleaning and the option to refinish in the future. If you have any irregularly shaped rooms, it might be better to hire a handyman. Uneven or improperly installed flooring can not only detract from your home’s value but can also be a safety hazard. 4. Lighting & Ceiling Fans: Lighting is an integral part of the general layout and character of your home and should be used as an extension of the overall style of your home. Ceiling fan/light

Speed and grace are synonymous with Lanier’s raptors The summer heat has arrived, the great spring fishing has slowed, the virus seems to be fading fast, but if you love raptors, Lanier is a great place to be! In the early mornings of most days, I become almost mesmerized by the graceful flying of large birds in the air currents above my boat. With almost no apparent effort, these beautiful creatures of nature sail and turn on invisible wind currents. Though you will see an occasional bald eagle or a redtail hawk, most of these great birds are ospreys that are not here to entertain anyone. Within a few seconds, their poetic motions can change dramatically! After a downward burst, their powerful wings become tucked, and the osprey becomes a streamlined projectile hurtling toward the calm surface of the water. No more than a couple of yards from impact, the magnificent wings are partially deployed to slow the crash into the water, and the legs are extended with the deadly talons spread. In less than a blink of the eye, this crafty bird of prey is in and out of the water and climbing back skyward with a fish making its last movements in the clutches of the razor-sharp talons. This life and death struggle is a daily routine because fish comprises 100 percent of the osprey’s diet, which makes them really “fish eagles.” Though they are found throughout most of the world and are a common sight in Florida or along any of our coastal highways, beaches or rivers, these gorgeous birds are fairly new to the area around Lake Lanier. Both ospreys and loons became more prevalent in this part of Georgia when the stocking rates of striped bass were increased.

Bill Vanderford Travel Editor

n MORE INFO: JFish51@aol.com www.georgiafishing.com PHOTOS BY BILL VANDERFORD

Because ospreys are normally larger than hawks or falcons and have a white head, they are often mistaken for the bald eagle. Upon closer inspection, one can easily see that the osprey has a dark band across its face and a smaller, less colorful beak than his more well-known relative and even more obvious is the osprey’s white breast feathers. Bald eagles are quite dark underneath. Probably the most unique part of an osprey is the rough textured feet that are perfect for grasping slippery prey. Also, the osprey is the only bird of prey that is able to grasp with two toes in front and two in back rather than the usual three and one toe arrangement. Ospreys often grab fish that are too big to carry, and they may not be able to let them go, which usually causes these birds to die prematurely. Some experts believe that the excitement of the catch stimulates a locking mechanism in the feet, while others surmise that the claws simply sink into bone and become stuck. Regardless of the reason, occasionally, fishermen catch large fish with osprey feet still attached. Nevertheless, the ospreys that survive are magnificent birds that

are fascinating to watch as they go about their daily task of catching and eating fish. With the exception of pesticides that killed many ospreys during the 1950s and ’60s, they seem to adapt well to all of the commotion caused by the human race. So, if you are lucky enough to see one of these fabulous creatures floating on the wind currents above Lake Lanier any morning, watch for a few minutes. You might be in for a magnificent show of nature! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.
