Almost 40% of Californians are not prepared for a natural disaster. Despite the wildfires, earthquake, floods and other natural disasters that affect our state, almost 40 percent of Californians say they “aren’t prepared at all” for catastrophes. JORGA HARRIS If you think, “It won’t happen to me” I’m here to give you a wake-up call. We Californians live in one of the most catastropheprone states in the United States. Since 1990, we’ve had more than 30 natural catastrophes, which caused nearly $20 billion in damages.
1. Create a home inventory Imagine trying to list all of your home’s valuables after a disaster strikes and you’re stressed and disoriented. It’s important to have such a list already prepared. Count on me to provide several home inventory and checklist options: High-Tech Many people keep an inventory of their home’s items, listed by room, on their home computer. You can also upload digital photos, scan print photos and import receipts into your computers. Whenever you make a significant
purchase, just update your file. Save a copy on a CD and store it away from your home (and/ or email it for safekeeping to a trusted family member or friend). Low-Tech Contact me and I’ll send you a printed version of the Home Content Inventory. If you go to the farmers.com homeowners page, you can click the Home Inventory Checklist link to print out an inventory to complete.
2. Check reconstruction costs Do you know what it would cost to rebuild your home if it were destroyed or sustained extensive damage? Your homeowners coverage takes into account reconstruction cost estimates and the characteristics and construction information about your home that you provided for your policy. Let’s get together and make sure the information is up-to-date, and that you’re satisfied with the coverage you have. One last thing, remember that your regular homeowner policy doesn’t provide coverage for floods or earthquakes. So give me a call to discuss separate coverage for such disasters. 37

Culinary Herbs are an excellent choice for windowsills and are easy to grow with children (and they love snipping off a few leaves for your dinner). Herbs Suitable for Indoor Gardening Basil • Coriander • Chives • Parsley • Sage What you will Need for a Windowsill Herb Garden • Grow tubs and pots of varying sizes for growing herbs (in some garden centers you can buy specially designed windowsill planters) • Try recycling old pots, plastic yogurt containers with added drainage holes • Kids love decorating terracotta pots before planting their basic herb garden • Seeds or baby herb plants • A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal or a north facing window that is quite bright • Soil (that needs to be kept moist) How to Create a Windowsill Herb Garden • Choose your containers (decorate if you like and add drainage holes if recycling) • Choose a saucer to catch excess water • Add soil • Add the baby herb plants • Water well • Label your herbs with their name, or make a garden plant label • Put into a bright warm space • Water when the soil feels dry to the touch • Avoid adding chemicals to culinary plants in your windowsill herb garden 58

Bristles will be nice and flexible. Barbecue Pest-Free To keep flies away from your summer BBQ, fill a heat-safe bowl with water and a few drops of lavender oil. Place the bowl on the grill. As the mixture heats, it releases a fragrant scent that flies hate. Clogged Drains Put one or two 1,000 mg vitamin C tablets down a clogged drain and let sit overnight. Flush with clean, hot water. To avoid clogged drains, pour 1/4 cup baking soda down weekly. Rinse through with hot water. Kill unwanted grass / weeds Remove grass and weeds from walk-ways and driveways by pouring full-strength vinegar onto unwanted areas. Reapply on any new growth until plants have starved. Deter Ants To keep ants away, spray vinegar around door and window frames, under appliances, and along other known ant trails. Crayon on wallpaper Remove crayon markings from wallpaper by wiping them off with a paste made of cornstarch and water. Washing Machine Periodically, pour a cup of vinegar in your washing machine and let it run through a regular cycle (no clothes added). This will dissolve soap residue and freshen up the washing machine. Laundry Keep colors from running or fading by immersing garments in full strength vinegar before their first washing. This works great with bathing suits. Cleaning Silver Clean silver by creating a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Rub the paste onto each item, then rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Spruce up Lawn Furniture Lawn furniture can be easily cleaned with a rinse of 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart warm water. 62

POLLEN, MOLD AND DUST MITES DO… • keep windows closed at night; use air-conditioning, which cleans, cools and dries the air • minimize early morning activity when most pollen is usually emitted (between 5am and 10am) • keep your windows closed when you travel by car • use your car air-conditioning on ‘re-circulated air’ rather than bringing in air from outside • stay indoors when the pollen count or humidity is high and on windy days • avoid high pollen areas such as farms and orchards • select garden plants that are low pollen producers (usually native species) • have fallen leaves and garden debris removed • ensure your home is well ventilated and in good repair, to avoid mold • Clean up water spills immediately • Have home inspected for water and plumbing leak • Clean pillows and bedding using hot water. • HEPA vacuum home at least one time per month • Change A/C filters at least three times per year
DON’T… • mow lawns or be around freshly cut grass; mowing stirs up pollens and molds • rake leaves (this also stirs up mold spores) • hang sheets or clothing outside to dry, as pollens and molds may collect in these items • grow too many indoor plants; wet soil causes mold to grow • use old pillows and bedding (discard) • store fire wood inside the home • leave damp clothing in hampers • let pets go un-groomed • over use pesticides and cleaners • store cleaning supplies, plungers, pesticides or paints indoor
