Accounting & Finance SAFIA SULEMAN | INSTRUCTOR Safia Suleman has many talents. She is an inspiring bookkeeping instructor, a successful entrepreneur, and an enthusiastic fitness coach. Currently, she is working on her start-up, Jolt Performance, producing and selling tasty caffeinated protein bars with a healthy nutritional profile. Her background in accounting gives her a strong understanding of the financial foundation of any company, which in-turn has helped her better manage her own business. “Mastering bookkeeping and accounting are such important skills for anyone running their own business. As a business owner, it’s important to be able to track my finances so I know how my business is performing. My background in accounting really is an asset in analyzing the monthly financial results and knowing how to strategize from a financial perspective,” says Safia. As a bookkeeping instructor at Langara, she enjoys connecting with students and learning what led them to bookkeeping. For Safia, it’s key to creating a learning environment that welcomes students with different goals and all levels of knowledge. “The students in my classes come from a variety of backgrounds and have different experiences in the accounting world. For this reason, I work to create a class that breaks down the basic accounting concepts well enough for the beginners, while also engaging and challenging the more advanced students. It’s also important to provide a wellrounded base, as someone who will be doing accounting work may have different needs based on the industry they are in.” Safia completed her undergraduate degree at the Beedie School of Business at SFU and her Master of Professional Accounting degree at the University of Saskatchewan. After graduating, she obtained her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation while working at KPMG, one of the largest international accounting organizations. She’s currently a CPA exam marker in addition to her many other talents.
Safia devotes her spare time to her passion – her business. On weekends, she does pop-ups or product demonstrations for Jolt Performance at fitness studios and local stores. She also enjoys outdoor activities and taking dance and fitness classes.

JASON SNYMAN | INSTRUCTOR & DIRECTOR There’s a connection between Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Game of Thrones and Langara’s Centre for Entertainment Arts (CEA) – Jason Snyman. His career in animation encompasses a dynamic portfolio of internationally recognized films. He is now an instructor and directs the Advanced 3D Animation programs at Langara’s third and newest teaching facility on Great Northern Way. The CEA offers advanced entertainment art programs in 3D Animation, VFX, Game Design, and Game Technology. Born and raised in South Africa, he first became interested in 3D animation at the age of 13. The time he spent teaching himself how to use the expensive software after school led to his first big break at 17. After relocating to the United Kingdom with his family, his skills helped him earn his very first job on an Eddy Murphy film. From then on, he was in: Jason continued to pick up momentum and worked on increasingly exciting projects as he progressed in his career. “I learned how to snowboard and moved to Vancouver where I worked most recently supervising the team that animated the dragons on Game of Thrones for two episodes in Season 7 and doing most of the dragon work in Season 8.” Jason can be credited with adding value to the growing animation industry by using Maya in a clever way. Maya is a computer animation and modeling software used for creating interactive assets in video games, TV series, and animated films. Using Maya, he was able to emulate how dragon skin would slide over the muscles and bones of dragons. He also developed a way to mimic large crowd simulations by using geometry in a simple way. Now, Jason is eager to share these unique techniques with future 3D animators. “I wanted to teach advanced techniques at Langara CEA, because I have some crazy outside of the box ideas and thought it'd be fun to give students an alternative to the standard way of doing 3D animation. I wanted to teach students the valuable and good stuff.” As with many creatives, Jason draws inspiration from his fellow artists. He loves watching the latest films and delving into behind the scenes content to discover what other artists are up to.
In his spare time, Jason spends time with his wife and two children. He also enjoys heading to the slopes for snowboarding. Outside of animation, he specializes in regularly coming up with dad jokes that are so bad, they’re good.

Business GODWIN YU | STUDENT SUCCESS Godwin Yu decided he needed a career change, so he enrolled in Langara’s Career Development Professional Certificate (CDPC) program. Upon graduating from the program, he landed a job as a corporate trainer for a multinational bakery organization. The organization supplies frozen and ready-to-eat baked goods to large corporations. His role requires him to plan and deliver training to new hires in a corporate and manufacturing setting. The CDPC program provided Godwin with the confidence needed to structure the training sessions he facilitates in his current role in an easy-to-understand way, ensuring that he successfully promotes safety and health within the workplace. While going through the CDPC program, Godwin really valued and appreciated the respectful communication and open-mindedness within his cohort group. He found his peers to be very encouraging and brought with them to the classroom a wealth of experience from various industries, which helped make the learning experience all the more rewarding and fulfilling. He also found the two-week practicum component of the program to be beneficial as well. “I would like to credit much of my academic success and my personal growth in the short three months to Joanne Chung, lead instructor of the CDPC program. She was not only a competent facilitator; she also inspired us to practice excellence and the highest ethical standards by role-modelling them daily.” In the past, Godwin has had the incredible opportunity to mentor volunteers, student staff and athletes in a post-secondary setting. This includes coaching SFU and UBC’s women’s and men’s tennis teams to the Canadian University National finals on three separate occasions. His past experience combined with the CDPC certificate will continue to bring him great success as he embarks on his new career.
In Godwin’s spare time, he enjoys drinking and brewing coffee with his friends and colleagues. He also enjoys going for hikes, exploring new cuisines and learning new languages. He loves the outdoors and spends as much free time outside as possible. He especially enjoys spending time at the Stanley Park seawall.

JUDITH M. ATKINSON | INSTRUCTOR As a visual artist, Judith M. Atkinson has a diverse portfolio that includes assemblage sculpture, painting, and installation works. As a Fine Art instructor at Langara College, she will be leading this summer’s new Educational Travel Salt Spring Island Painting Tour. Judith loves having the opportunity to share new cultural experiences with her students. She has experienced the benefits of travel first-hand and is excited to lead students through the unforgettable experience of the sights, sounds, and tastes of a new place. Judith also led the Painting in Tuscany Tour, a program where students sketch and paint while exploring historical sites in Florence, Cortona, and Arezzo. Her favourite part of this tour included the exhibition at Villa Cuiano, the traditional Italian agriturismo farmhouse accommodation where students stay during the tour. It showcased the wonderful work that the students created during their stay. The affinity that developed within the group as the trip progressed was a definite highlight for her. “I hope students travelling in my groups find inspiration from the sites we visit. The masterpieces we view coupled with their experience will translate into a work of art for themselves that will trigger the experience long after they return home.” A pivotal experience for the group included the chance to listen to Peter Bartlett, a British artist living in Pierle. He led the tour group to see the Fresco by Piero della Francesca, ‘the Legend of the True Cross' in Arezzo. It was a monumental experience for the group, as it helped students better understand the artwork and it also influenced Judith’s most recent exhibition. The Return of the Goddess, Judith’s most recent solo exhibition, focuses on the Goddess Athena and her qualities, with a tie-in to the Me Too movement and the climate crisis we currently face. This exhibition is a perfect example of how Judith blends art with the social causes that she feels passionate about.
Judith enjoys traveling, exploring and appreciating classic artwork from the great artists of all time. In case you were unsure, she loves art, and has a working studio and garden at her home in Port Moody where she enjoys spending her free time.

Health & Human Services SUZANNE WILLIAMS | STUDENT SUCCESS As a recent graduate of Langara’s Balance System Acupuncture (BSA) Certificate program, Suzanne Williams' path to becoming a Registered Acupuncturist was a winding but exciting journey. Suzanne lived abroad for many years in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Paris. Living overseas has exposed her to easatern medicinal practices and taught her the value of patience and keeping an open mind. Acupuncture involves insertion of fine needles to help alleviate pain and internal disorders. BSA is a special style of Acupuncture that builds on the classical approach from over 2,000 years ago, making it quick, efficient and well suited to modern day. This BSA program also offers an intimate learning environment, clinical hours and competency testing. “The program allowed me to practice with a strong degree of confidence from day one in the clinic. It continues to help shape the acupuncture practitioner I want to be. The program also introduced me to a community of likeminded practitioners and provided me with a network to get my first jobs as an acupuncturist.” The classroom experiences at Langara were both inspiring and engaging for Suzanne. Dr. Sonia Tan, program developer and lead instructor, along with guest lecturers, imparted lasting knowledge on Suzanne. She appreciated the variety of backgrounds and experiences the other students contributed. Suzanne is grateful for the doors that have opened for her since completing the BSA program and beginning her practice. “I have had many meaningful experiences at work – the look of astonishment on a patient’s face when their pain melts away or they gain range of motion with just a few well-placed needles; the trust that patients show when they release emotion, and sometimes tears, in my presence; and simply the sincere ‘thank you’ at the end of their treatment.”
In her spare time, Suzanne enjoys being a student of Qi Gong, Tai Ji and other internal martial arts. She also spends a great deal of time volunteering and can be found exploring nature, likely water skiing or paddling.

The program highlights the importance of yoga therapy as a preventative and supplementary healthcare practice for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Our interdisciplinary program bridges eastern and western health sciences for an integrative approach to health and healing. The program is designed to prepare graduates to be independent and successful health care professionals. Graduates will become leaders in this emerging field of complementary health care and trauma informed training. Upon completion, students will have the skills to teach yoga classes with a therapeutic focus and conduct one-on-one Yoga therapy sessions with confidence and professionalism.

Languages of the World & ESL DELARA ZARIN | INSTRUCTOR Delara Zarin has a passion for sharing the Persian language with her students regardless of where she lives. After graduating from Allameh Tabattaba’i University, studying Persian Language and Literature, she taught Persian Literature in high school in Iran. Upon immigrating to Canada, she started a Persian language course at the University of Calgary. Today, Delara is now spearheading the Persian Language program at Langara Continuing Studies. Persian is a great addition to the multitude of language courses offered at the College. Delara is happy to be able to continue her teaching adventures. Langara’s Persian language class focuses on learning the language by introducing practical methods that can be used on a daily basis. This can include focusing on role playing and proper pronunciation. “It’s beautiful seeing my students delighted upon understanding the etymology or the roots of words. It’s an experience that really ingrains the language in their minds!” Whenever one of Delara’s students uses a Persian expression in the appropriate way, Delara feels very proud. One of her most memorable experiences includes a student who did not speak a single word of Persian when he first started her class. After some time, the student was able to deliver a speech in Persian at his daughter’s wedding to the delight of his daughter, his new son-in-law, and all the wedding guests. These are the stories that encourage and inspire Delara to continue teaching. “Some of my students have relationships with Persian speakers, some come from a Persian family and are looking to learn their familial tongue, others simply admire Persian culture or want to prepare for their visit to Iran.”
In her spare time, Delara enjoys creating abstract paintings, jogging, reading, and watching films. She loves the local library book clubs. You will also find her exploring the Lower Mainland, some favourite places include New Westminster Quay and Buntzen Lake.

During this full-time, intensive program, you will develop the academic skills necessary to thrive in a North American college or university. Drawing from a variety of academic disciplines, LEAP’s specially designed materials will improve your language, academic, and cultural competencies. Course materials, projects, and assignments are tailored to each step of your English language journey. LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, and connects language learning to the academic skills you will need to succeed. Each successive LEAP level will challenge you to expand your academic abilities, whether you are working on an interview project, reading source material for a research essay, or meeting your teammates to work on a group presentation. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English. LEAP graduates are granted direct admission to many programs at Langara, including university-transfer studies.
Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. You will develop your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while exploring and expanding your knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Interactive workshops and educational outings related to your course topics will give you opportunities to apply your new skills in a natural environment.
Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. As you progress through the program, the complexity of academic strategies and the level of critical thinking required will increase. With each new level, your classes will more closely mirror college courses, including the introduction of the online learning environment and an increased emphasis on independent learning.
Program Expectations LEAP students are required to attend daily classes from Monday to Friday; to be active participants in classroom discussions and activities; and to complete their homework and assignments each night. You should expect to spend 20 hours in class and to complete an additional 20 hours of homework each week. Commitment is essential to success in this rigorous program.

Learning a language is a fun and rewarding way to exercise the brain, discover new cultures, and get more from travel. Languages of the World classes focus on conversational speaking and listening skills with a curriculum designed to help students take on day-to-day activities in a new language. During each carefully-structured course, students also learn introductory and intermediate reading, writing, and grammar skills. Our small class sizes allow for individual attention, and in-class activities encourage interaction among students. Our language instructors are native speakers skilled in second-language instruction who use a variety of teaching techniques to facilitate learning and to share the cultural aspects of the target language with their students. Students are welcome to repeat a level in order to gain more confidence in the language.

Mandarin Education for Adults & Children

Our Mandarin as a second language program emphasizes practicality and features modern and interesting presentation styles, and use simple, easy-to-learn materials. We teach both the Traditional and Simplified written forms of Chinese characters; Hanyu Pinyin phonetics is also taught to complement the learning experience. Each adult Mandarin course is 10 weeks in length, with the exception of 8 weeks in the July term. *A 15% discount will be applied to registrations for those who have completed three or more Adult Mandarin courses. Each children’s Mandarin course lasts 16 weeks per term. Japanese Language Proficiency Test Langara Continuing Studies now hosts the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). The JLPT, under joint organization of the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, started in 1984 as a test to measure and certify the Japaneselanguage proficiency of those whose native language is not Japanese. The JLPT is the largest Japanese-language test in the world, with approximately 610,000 examinees in 62 countries and areas worldwide in 2011. Advanced registration is required.
