S O P H I A O L I V E R I O | SU CC ESS S TO RY Before joining the Medical Aesthetics Certificate Program, Sophia Oliverio was a stay-athome mother, contemplating her return to the workforce. The former licensed practical nurse (LPN) wasn’t sure what she wanted to do once her youngest started school full-time, until she learned about the field of medical aesthetics, which would allow her to combine her background in make-up artistry and previous medical training in a new career. “It was a perfect match for me,” she says. “I want to make people feel better inside and out.” Re-entering education after a long absence and as a single mother wasn’t an easy decision. Sophia worried about whether she would be able to balance such an intensive program with her personal responsibilities, but she was pleasantly surprised. “The teachers as well as the schedule made it manageable,” she says. “I researched lots of other programs, but this one had everything I was looking for and the hours were a perfect match for my day-to-day life.” When she enrolled at Langara, Sophia was expecting to learn about the different techniques and procedures used in medical spas, but she was impressed by the amount of opportunities she had to gain first-hand experience. “They make sure that everyone gets the chance to experience a treatment as well as give one,” she says. “The hands-on aspect of the program made it easier to take the knowledge delivered in class and apply it to the clinical training on site.” One of the instructors Sophia found particularly inspiring was Jamie Gemmell, who will be returning to teach in the program this fall. “She is very knowledgeable and has been in the industry for many years,” says Sophia. “To listen to her and see how passionate she is about what she does makes me know I can do this.” After she completes her certificate, Sophia plans to work in a doctor-run medical spa. However, she doesn’t see this as an end to her education. “I want to continue learning while working,” she says. “It feels good knowing I can help other people — to be able to do this as well as apply my knowledge would be the perfect job.” Sophia Oliverio is a mother of two who previously worked as an LPN in a care home for veterans.

B I L L G A L L OWAY | I N S T RU C TO R Bill Galloway leads a life well-lived. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the accounting instructor first came to Canada in 1973 to earn a doctorate degree at Queens University. Since then, Bill has worked in the manufacturing industry for 30 years, taught at Langara for 12 years, wrote a book about his grandfather’s life in Ghana, and – in his late sixties - has recently qualified to be a fitness instructor. It was early on in his educational career that Bill discovered his love of instructing. As a grad student, he enjoyed teaching undergrads, but it took a fortuitous meeting with Lynn Kitchen, manager of the Continuing Studies business programs, for him to become an instructor at the College. He’s been enjoying his experience ever since. “Being an instructor at Langara has been an honour,” Bill says. “I’ve developed personally by watching students who have had many constraints on their lives – children, caring for parents, and holding down day and night jobs – come to class cheerfully.” Bill knows the importance of quality instruction and how an instructor who goes beyond teaching the curriculum can significantly impact the life of a student. It’s this belief that guides his teaching style; something he learned when he was a university student new to the country. “As an immigrant, there were many cultural differences from my home and my upbringing, and I felt I didn’t belong here or in grad school,” Bill says. “I wanted to leave. But a very wise counsellor told me I had a place in the school, that I could do this, and she gave me some perspective about my amazing opportunity. She was right and I stuck it out. I received such kind assistance when I was a new student in Canada; hopefully I can pay some of that forward.” When asked what he wants his students to get from his courses, Bill emphasizes the value of life skills. “I want students to become confident enough to take a stand and defend their point of view to anyone. Accountants and many other professions expect their members to give convincing presentations,” he shares. “More important than the technical skills in accounting, I want my students to become fluent in explaining their points of view. It’s a necessary skill for the profession and in life, generally.” Dr. William Galloway, CPA, CGA, currently teaches Management Information Systems and Management Accounting 1. His book about his grandfather, A Canadian Scotsman in Africa, was published in 2016.

OF LOVE AND HOME PHOTOGRAPHY BY BERYL WOODROW

B E RY L WO O D ROW | SU CC ESS S TO RY Beryl Woodrow is the quintessential life-long learner. After acquiring various degrees and credentials in special education, counselling, and fine arts, the former district resource teacher for deaf and hard-of-hearing students is now pursuing her diploma in the Continuing Studies Photography Program. It’s one of the best decisions she’s ever made. “I started taking pictures years ago – beginning with my dad’s Polaroid camera – which led me to take courses to enhance my abilities and to learn to process my own film. This left me asking, ‘What do I really want to say with my photography?’” Beryl’s current project, Of Love and Home, is an ongoing photographic series documenting the lives of 80- and 90-year-old couples who continue to live in their own homes. It explores how they maintain their independence and purpose given the challenges that come with age. “Over 30 years ago, I remember telling one of my students that my husband and I had no children. She asked who would look after us when we were older. If we needed to be taken care of, we could reluctantly go into a long-term care home. There were no other choices that I knew of, with or without children,” she recalls. “With this question in the back of my mind, I began a project for a documentary photography course. Four years later, that project has developed into Of Love and Home.” Since then, the project has generated plenty of interest from magazines, websites, blogs, and exhibitions. It also showed at Langara’s Gallery 49 space as part of this year’s Capture Photography Festival – Beryl’s first solo exhibition. “The process of photography has helped me see beauty in the mundane,” she says. “The courses at Langara have helped me learn new skills and techniques, and given me the confidence to take what I see and experiment to make it my own.” Of Love and Home straddles the lines between portraiture, social documentary, and visual narrative. In addition to photographing each couple, Beryl spent countless hours listening to their stories and questioning our assumptions – even her own – about growing old. In a way, Beryl’s own journey challenges our pre-conceived notions of aging, as she shows no signs of slowing down. “The more I learn, the more I want to learn,” she reflects. “It often takes me into some new direction; inevitably, a new course to take and a new project to start.” Beryl Woodrow is in her third year of the CS Photography Program and is a background performer in the television and film industry. She and her husband have been together for 40 years.

Even as he prepares to embark on his seventh trip to the Galápagos Islands, tour leader Anoush Dadgar’s excitement is palpable as he describes what makes the Islands such a remarkable place to visit and one of the natural wonders of the world. Among many breath-taking sights, seeing a school of dolphins at night – visible only in silhouette due to the florescent dinoflagellates clinging onto their skin – stands out in his memory. “I have traveled the globe and I rarely return to the same location more than once – except for the Galápagos Islands,” he says. “I remember when I visited the islands and the last remaining tortoise subspecies of Pinta Island – ‘Lonesome George’ – was the rarest living creature in the world. Seeing participants take pictures and marvel at his presence was memorable, especially since it was a symbol of the conservation efforts on the islands.” The Galápagos is an ideal destination for the biologist, who spearheaded educational travel tours in Continuing Studies 18 years ago. “After running my first field study, I became convinced that it was the best place for students to learn,” he says. “The ability to touch, smell, see, and hear nature while being educated about it is irreplaceable.” While the Galápagos are known for their remarkable geology and exotic animal life – from blue-footed boobies to gigantic tortoises – students don’t need a scientific background to enjoy or benefit from the trip. Anoush believes that visiting spectacular locations and seeing amazing animals up close are only part of what makes the trips worthwhile. The opportunity to gain knowledge from experienced tour leaders and the bonds that form when travelling in a small group also makes these excursions ‘trips of a lifetime’. “I see a change in the participants after the trip,” he says. “They have a different insight into life on our planet and a greater appreciation of its diversity.” For Anoush, the appeal of leading another Galápagos Eco Tour in May 2018 is driven by both the opportunity to once again experience the amazing environment and the chance to share his considerable knowledge with a new group of participants. “My passions are teaching and travel,” says Anoush. “I consider myself very lucky to be doing both as a job.” Anoush Dadgar teaches biology at Langara. The next Galapagos Eco Tour will run May 1-11, 2018 with registration closing in January 2018.

World Languages & ESL N E R I SS A YA N | SU CC ESS S TO RY In 2002, while researching ESL programs in Vancouver from her home in Shanghai, China, Nerissa Yan discovered the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program. It was exactly what she was looking for. Later that same year, Nerissa moved to Vancouver as an international student. Although she was enrolled in LEAP 15 years ago, Nerissa fondly recalls her experience in the program and why she chose it over other options. “LEAP stood out because I was specifically looking for a program that focused on helping students develop academic skills to transition into university studies,” she says. “LEAP is unique from many other ESL programs offered across the country in the way that it prepares students linguistically, academically, and intellectually for university-level education. It teaches students all the necessary skill sets to have a smooth transition from not having much experience in an English learning environment to studying in a Canadian university or college.” Nerissa, who currently works as a lawyer in Vancouver, praises LEAP not only for its programming but because of the impact it has on students’ lives. “What I enjoyed about the program was the fact that the teaching curriculum was carefully designed to achieve each student’s goal of being prepared for university studies. LEAP instructors tried very hard to ensure that students were having an enjoyable learning experience while developing substantive skill sets.” While she remembers daily lessons being full of take-home assignments, essay-writing, and research, the diversity of the subject matter was interesting and kept her engaged. To that end, Nerissa recommends current students study hard, learn as much as they can, and ultimately enjoy their experience while laying a solid foundation that she believes will yield plenty of professional and personal dividends down the road. “I had a very positive learning experience with LEAP. It was the launching point for me to continue my journey in Canada. It prepared me well for university studies, and later law school,” she shares. “I remember looking forward to going to class every day. I developed close friendships with many classmates and remain friends with them to this day.” Nerissa Yan is a commercial litigation lawyer at Hakemi and Ridgedale LLP in downtown Vancouver. She also speaks conversational Japanese.

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

S CO T T S T E WA R T | SU CC ESS S TO RY Recent Real Estate graduate Scott Stewart still remembers the uncertainty he felt on his first day of studies. “It had been the better part of 40 years since I had voluntarily walked into a classroom setting,” he says. Scott stood agonizing over where to sit – not too close to the front, lest he be labelled as a keener, but not too far back either – when the instructor walked in. “As I sat down in my chair for the first time, panic ensued. ‘What am I doing here? There will be exams and essays to write!’” he recalls. Despite his apprehension, Scott quickly began to thrive in his chosen program. The former engineering technician went on to earn two certificates – Property Management and Professional Building Manager – and won a scholarship from the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia for Academic Excellence in Business Communications. “The combination of teaching prowess, real world experience, small class sizes, and a genuine passion for teaching was – and is – the hallmark of the Real Estate Program,” says Scott. “One may excel in this world with only ‘book smarts’ or ‘street smarts’, but Langara provided a disciplined balance of the two.” “As I progressed through my studies, I gradually became aware that the calibre of instruction and course material was the very best that one can find,” he says. “My classmates and future colleagues were also a source of inspiration, drive, and perspective.” Scott came to Langara after an injury forced a career change. He approached his situation with characteristic gusto. Working with his vocational rehab team, Scott put together a 79-page document for WorkSafe BC outlining the program at Langara and how it would lead him to new employment opportunities. Today, he is the Operations Manager for The New Chelsea Society, one of the leading non-profit housing providers in British Columbia. The learning curve has been steep, but Scott feels both deep satisfaction and immense pride in being part of such a caring organization. “I could not be happier, more fulfilled, and excited about my future,” Scott enthuses. “I now begin the next chapter in my life with gratitude for all those who have shared in this journey.” Scott Stewart finished his 2016 school year with a 4.0 GPA. Though all of his instructors were fabulous, Nizam Dossa and David Karkut stand out in his memory for their dedication, enthusiasm, and innate ability to put the class at ease.

L U I S R I B E I RO - I N S T RU C TO R Though instructor Luis Ribeiro joined Langara Continuing Studies in 2010, his teaching experience extends further back. Luis was a full-time corporate trainer for more than 10 years, teaching everything from Adobe Illustrator to Microsoft Project. “While I was in corporate training, I noticed how many people struggled with their day-to-day usage of Microsoft applications – even more so when they needed to perform more complex tasks,” says Luis. “I decided to join Langara so that I could make a difference.” As a corporate trainer, Luis worked with a range of organizations, including the BC Security Commission, BC Liquor Distribution Branch, and the RCMP. Now, he works as a technical analyst but he still spends part of his workday teaching others. “I am the go-to resource at my workplace, which has a staff of almost 100 employees,” he says. “Because of my experience at Langara, I often know what to expect when a co-worker calls me for help.” While Luis has worked with a wide variety of programs and has a deep understanding of many more, he doesn’t limit himself to teaching the technical parts of each program. “My instructional style stimulates critical thinking. Students need to problem solve and become clear on their real objective,” he says. “It’s not always about which formulas to use but how a spreadsheet will help that company make informed decisions.” Luis’ extensive corporate experience – both as a trainer and now a full-time analyst – allows him to bring real-world business scenarios into his lessons. Because his role includes creating management reports and performing analysis, he understands not only how to work with data but the current demands for it. “Staying on top of technology also means you are mindful of new trends of information gathering and how business information needs are evolving,” he explains. Luis says that 20 years ago, most employers wouldn’t have expected applicants to know Excel but in an increasingly data-driven world, critical thinking skills and programs like Excel are no longer optional. “The workplace is always changing,” says Luis. “Keep up!” Luis holds a Provincial Instructor Diploma from the Ministry of Advanced Education and is a Microsoft Certified Master Instructor. His favourite program is Microsoft Excel.

“Being part of the main campus is an enriching experience. I’m looking forward to learning about 3D printing and crossing over to design where ideas created on computers can manifest into metal.” – Peggy Logan, Instructor

P EG G Y L O G A N | I N S T RU C TO R Instructor Peggy Logan has been making jewellery for decades and her dedication has never wavered. For this enamellist and artist, jewellery is a constant passion. “Jewellery-making is an art that can be learned at any stage of life,” Peggy says. “It has a very practical side and yet it can also be wholly experimental.” Peggy’s commitment to jewellery-making has led to national and international recognition. In 2015, a neck piece she created earned an honorable mention at the International Cloisonné Jewelry Conference in Japan. She also received a scholarship from the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and accepted a year-long artist residency at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. “It was the most transformative experience as a jeweller,” she says of the residency. “It gave me the high level of professionalism that I still have today.” Peggy’s skills, experience, and knowledge make her a valuable resource to students, but it’s her willingness to engage with them afterwards that makes an impression. Students that take courses with Peggy – either individually or as part of the Jewellery Making Certificate – reach out to her for private sessions, advice on projects, or feedback on their work. She enjoys running into former students at jewellery events and is excited to bring her future students into the Makerspace, a new space at Langara that encourages experiential, interdisciplinary, and peer learning outside the traditional classroom. “Being part of the main campus is an enriching experience,” she says. “I’m looking forward to learning about 3D printing and crossing over to design where ideas created on computers can manifest into metal.” Langara itself is a special place to Peggy. When she was a fine arts student at the College, she found it to be a supportive environment where she received encouragement from her instructors. “Langara is a place of learning that has kept the joy of inquiry and discovery alive for me and others,” she says. “Coming to Langara as a Continuing Studies instructor is my chance to be a part of the excellence in education that Langara provides.” Peggy Logan graduated from the Jewellery Arts Program at George Brown College in 1983. She recently exhibited in the 20th anniversary of the Eastside Culture Crawl.
