After a 965 km drive from Dar to Nairobi, he was accepted for fighter training in a de Havilland Tiger Moth biplane. On training flights, he enjoyed watching the wildlife of Kenya. We all know that the Zanzibar Archipelago boasts warm blue waters and white sands. Its beaches are some of the best known in Africa – so popular, in fact, that visitors from across the world flock to the Spice Islands every week for some relaxation and quality time. Surprisingly though, not many of us venture outside the beach resorts to experience everything Zanzibar has to offer. So jump off your sunbeds, get out of the pool and follow us as on our tour of the 10 best things to do in and around Zanzibar.

SWIM WITH SEA LIFE AT MNEMBA ISLAND Mnemba, often referred to as Mnemba Atoll, is a small island about 3 km off Unguja, the largest island of the Zanzibar Archipelago. The surrounding reefs, a Marine Conservation Area, offer a haven for beautiful sea life. Swim with green sea turtles, snorkel among the coral or go scuba diving with dolphins and whale sharks.

PARTY ON THE BEACH Full moon parties have been popular since the 1980s. Not many people know that Zanzibar has its very own, held at Kendwa Rocks Beach Hotel and usually (though not always) on the Saturday closest to the full moon each month. Enjoy a night of wonderful acrobats and fire-eaters, delicious grill food and dance music.

TEEING OFF Try out Zanzibar’s new golf course at Sea Cliff Resort & Spa. This pretty nine-hole course features many small ponds and overlooks the ocean. The greens are spectacular and the fairways pristine. Tee off in the morning, break for lunch and return for a spa break in the afternoon.

FEED TORTOISES AT PRISON ISLAND Prison Island, just off the coast of Old Stone Town, earned its name as a former prison for slaves. Today, it is the home of Zanzibar’s giant Aldabra tortoise colony, imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. Visitors can escape to the island by boat for some peace and quiet, to feed the tortoises – some of which are over 100 years old – or take a stroll in the forest to see a wide variety of birds, colourful peacocks, bats and beautiful butterflies. Keep your eyes peeled, too, for the shy and elusive duiker.

FORODHANI GARDENS The Forodhani Gardens come alive at night with a vibrant food market in the main square that brings together local people and tourists. Located on the main seafront in Stone Town, in front of some of the island’s most famous historical buildings, the gardens are especially crowded after sunset. Visitors can sample traditional Swahili and Zanzibari cuisine such as barbecued meats, samosas, cassava, urojo (soup with potato balls), chipsi mayai (omelette with French fries), pilau rice and sweet potatoes.

For the more adventurous there’s deepsea diving, waterskiing, parasailing, jet-skiing and kite boarding

DINE AT THE ROCK RESTAURANT The Rock Restaurant is an experience not to be missed when visiting Zanzibar. Situated in the south-east of the island, on the Michamvi Pingwe peninsula, the restaurant is about an hour from Stone Town. This aptly named eatery is located on a rock in the ocean and serves mainly seafood caught from the surrounding waters. The restaurant also has an outside area where visitors can enjoy the magical views. Diners are taken to and from the restaurant by boat at high tide.

VISIT THE MONKEYS IN JOZANI FOREST Take a tour of Jozani Forest, one of the last remaining reserves in the world inhabited by the red colobus monkey. This was once an endangered species, but numbers have grown to more than 2,000 thanks to conservation work by the nature reserve and local people. Declared a nature reserve in the 1960s, Jozani offers wonderful photo opportunities and up-close sightings of these rare creatures.

WONDERFUL WATER SPORTS Are you a sports fanatic? Or do you fancy trying your hand at something new? Well, Zanzibar is the ideal place to do it. For those who want to escape from the pool but still relax, there are opportunities to snorkel, go kayaking, take a dhow cruise or practise windsurfing. For the more adventurous there’s deepsea diving, water-skiing, parasailing, jet-skiing, kite boarding and other marine activities.

A TASTE OF DARAJANI MARKET Darajani Market is Stone Town’s biggest and most popular market. Located on Darajani Road near the Anglican Cathedral, it offers the perfect opportunity to grab a bargain in a beautiful setting. The bazaar sells everything from paintings and jewellery to clothing and electronics. Here, tourists can taste some of Zanzibar’s famous street food and local delicacies, including fresh seafood, delicious fruit, fine grains and strong spices.

HISTORICAL BUILDINGS Zanzibar offers more than just sun, sea and sand. Stone Town is steeped in culture and history, with ancient sites that make for a fascinating day out. The Anglican church was built in 1873 and is a ‘must see’ for anyone interested in the British abolitionist movement in Zanzibar. Known as the House of Wonders, Beit el Ajaib was built in the 1880s as the ceremonial palace of the ruling sultan. It is still one of the most prominent structures on the island today. The Old Fort, located next to the House of Wonders Museum, is worth a visit. In addition there are other museums, baths, forts and ruins, ancient houses and cathedrals dotted around the city, just waiting to be explored. www.precisionairtz.com

One of the Nairobi’s best-known clubs, Black Diamond (also known as Black D) is popular with local people and expatriates alike, offering one of the city’s most authentic Kenyan clubbing experiences. Here, the DJs tend to play local or continental music, rather than Western tunes, which creates a lively atmosphere among the crowd. Live music is a staple of Black Diamond, too, with bands playing on Wednesdays and Sundays in addition to regular karaoke nights. Ninon interview

Opportunity knocks for Ninon ‘If women truly believe they will succeed, then actions will follow’ International Women’s Day (8 March) is a time to reflect on how far women have come in their fight for equality – and how far they have to go. A

new school of cooking in Tanzania – the second such school to be opened

by Singita – promises to give students the best education in the art of food (and wine). The decision to set up the Serengeti School of Cooking follows the success of the Singita School of Cooking in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, which marks its 10th anniversary this year. As the hospitality and tourism sectors in East Africa continue to grow, so too does the demand for qualified chefs. The aim of the Singita cooking schools is not only to bridge this widening gap and raise the skill levels in lodge kitchens, but also to provide new opportunities for local communities while promoting the role of chef as a highly skilled job that offers great prospects for employees.

Tanzanian school Singita Grumeti’s Tanzanian school, which opened in July last year, offers a professional cookery course to members of the local community. Graduates from the Serengeti School of Cooking will gain a nationally recognised professional cookery qualification, after which they can

‘I always knew I wanted to be in a creative industry, but I never thought fashion would be it’ From concept to catwalk Ally explains how his designs develop from rough ideas to the clothes on your back: “For a new collection, we start off by creating a mood board. Using ideas from this, we then sketch different designs and work on a fabric swatch, also known as a pattern swatch. After the fabric swatch has been completed, we begin making samples of each design and pin them together to create the running order for a collection. At this point we can edit and work on the individual designs to better accord them to our vision. The final touches are the fittings and alterations to make the items runway ready.”

Historical role The Union of the Comoros once played a major role in the world economy and that of the Indian Ocean. For centuries, the islands were a major stopover on mercantile routes between the East, Africa and the West. The Comoros became a French colony as a result of the Berlin Conference of 1886-7 and remained under French political control until 1975 when three of the islands – Grande Comore (known in the local language as Ngazidja), Mohéli (Mwali) and Anjouan (Nzwani) – declared independence from France. Mobile Apps

APPTASTIC!

Africa’s top mobile apps

At one time, the most popular functions of a mobile phone were calling and sending texts. Nowadays, they do much more than that. They have become a huge part of our everyday lives – so much so that many of us wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without one. Mobile applications, or apps, have been around for a while, having been pushed into the techno limelight by the Apple App Store in 2008. Since then, a variety of apps have become available on android and other systems. The United States, Europe and Asia have dominated the app market, which is now a multi-billion-dollar industry. But Africa has caught onto the app trend with a flurry of new mobile apps focused on African life. Paa Tanzania brings you the top African apps.

The Kili effect Thanks to the Kili Marathon and other sporting events, there has been a wave of lifestyle changes across the country, with many more Tanzanians taking up running as a means of exercise, to keep healthy and socialise. As well as encouraging people to become active, the Kili Marathon has provided a great deal of economic benefits to the country and the Kilimanjaro region. Many of the competing tourists tend to stay in Tanzania, to climb the mountain, go on safari or relax on the beaches after the race.

Rising to new heights of tourism glory The beautiful Southern Highlands of Tanzania are a sheer delight for those looking to explore the rolling hills and admire the abundant flora and fauna. O

WCS employs more than 100 full-time Tanzanian and eight expatriate staff and has regional offices in Arusha, Iringa, Mbeya and Zanzibar. The society has unparalleled knowledge of its five key landscapes and priority species (www. wcstanzania.org). In addition to community support, WCS hires, trains and funds rangers, forest guards and protected area staff to support protected area management. WCS has the only database of Southern Highlands biodiversity and its data were responsible for the establishment of several Key Biodiversity Areas in the Southern Highlands. in this class, the C-HR is no loadlugger – it’s more a dainty urban cruiser. Indeed, the rear storage area is comparatively small, even with the seats folded down. Of course, it may be some time before used examples reach our part of the world, but new the C-HR is a tad pricey, especially compared with most of its rivals in this fast-growing sector. Nevertheless, Toyota is always a winner in East Africa, with plentiful spare parts and strong residuals when selling used models at a later date. This probably gives the C-HR the edge over the class-leading Nissan Qashqai, which leads the field in some non-African markets.

Hybrid I’m also unsure how East African drivers feel about hybrid engines, which are growing in popularity in Japan, North America and Europe but have yet to gain acceptance elsewhere. Clearly, these power plants are perceived to be eco-friendly and can save fuel, but they’re increasingly expensive to maintain as the power train ages. And don’t even think about the cost of a replacement engine. Excel and Dynamic trim levels and

Welcome Aboard

Safety and well-being onboard PASSENGER SAFETY Precision Air takes passenger safety very seriously. Aviation safety isn’t just the pilot’s or the cabin crew’s job – it takes all of us. It is easy for our natural sense of caution to be dulled in our modern environment, where things don't go wrong very often. Whether in the air or on the ground, your life, and the lives of your family members could someday be saved if you make it a point, in every situation, to create a mental plan of action in case of emergency. Here are some important tips to help you enjoy your travel experience with Precision Air – in flight and around the airport.

EXIT ROW SEAT A passenger allocated emergency exit seat; A. Must be both willing and physically able to open the exit doors in an emergency. B. Must completely understand the printed emergency evacuation techniques. C. Must be 16 years old and above.

PAY ATTENTION TO PREFLIGHT BRIEFING Although the information seems repetitious, the locations of the closest emergency exits may be different depending on the aircraft that you fly on and the seat you are in.

CARRY ON BAGGAGE There are strict rules about what you can bring on board an aircraft. Because:

Carry-on bags must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. Please confirm with Precision Air rules before your travel, to avoid delays. *Remember: All carry-on baggage must be left behind in an evacuation.

SAFETY ONBOARD Boarding and leaving an aircraft requires your full attention. As you move to and from the aircraft, you may be in a busy area with many other passengers and cargo, moving vehicles, other aircraft, slippery walkways and/or stairs.

RESPECT YOUR CREW AND FELLOW PASSENGERS Everyone has the right to safe and secure travel. That is why Precision Air employees and aviation authority will not tolerate any behaviour that interferes with the flight or puts the safety of passengers and crew at risk.

SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be fastened during take off, landing, during turbulence, and anytime the crew deem it necessary. Keeping the belt on when you are seated provides that extra protection you might need in case of emergency. If you are responsible for an infant or a child, you must first ensure that your own seatbelt is properly fastened, then secure the child and if its an infant secure the child’s or the infant’s restraints.

A. Not all aircraft have space to store your carry-on baggage.

Important note: There are a number of events involving air turbulence that highlight the importance of keeping seatbelts fastened throughout the flight.

B. In an accident, baggage in the aisles makes it harder to get out of the aircraft quickly.

Though rare, in-flight turbulence is the leading cause of injuries to both passengers and the crew.

48

Paa Tanzania

It’s good practice to keep your seatbelts fastened even when the seatbelt signs are not on.

MEDICAL CASES AND PREGNANCIES If you have a medical case and may need assistance during your travel, kindly enquire from Precision Air offices or agents for procedures before your flight. If you are pregnant, you will need to fill a Precision Air medical form, to be signed by your doctor to confirm that you are OK for travel. For further details kindly ask while booking your ticket from our sales offices and/or customer services.

PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES Use of portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, mp4 players, ipads, etc are not allowed during take off, landing, taxiing, descent and climb. Precision Air prohibits the use of some electronic devices during flight, because they emit signals that can interfere with the aircraft's instrumentation. Some of the items prohibited include cell phones, radios,remote-controlled games/toys, laser pointers, ipads or tablets that transmits frequencies, portable printers, walkie talkies, scanners, laptops and other items need to be stowed away for these phases of the flight to avoid injuries in case of an emergency.
