More of an evening person? Sign up for the Sunset Cruise which leaves port an hour and a half before dusk. Watching the sunset under sail as the Rappahannock River glows around you is a moment to remember. Sail & Surf
Adventures also offers a Moonlight Cruise for a few evenings scheduled around the full moon. The charter description gives a preview – “the full moon lights up the river with an ethereal glow that sparkles off the water’s surface and creates
a truly spectacular and unique experience.” Captain Clay adds, “There is an other-worldly vibe that accompanies sailing at night.”
Along with captaining charters, Captain Clay really enjoys sharing his love of sailing while teaching. Are you a surfer at heart? Clay has traveled from Maine to Florida, California, Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Puerto Rico to find the best waves. “Adventure is at the root of what drives my sailing and surfing trips. It all starts at Kiptopeke State Park on the southern end of Virginia’s Eastern Shore where you board Galene. The island and its beaches are a National Wildlife Refuge, and with no public road access, surfing this deserted break at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay is an amazing opportunity few others have embarked.

Building Great Futures with Unique Opportunities
Written by Ann DeMuthYouth entering the state-of-the-art Boys & Girls Club in Kilmarnock are given unique opportunities to capitalize or expand their interests. BGCNN kids can learn how to use 3-D printers, fly drones, build bridges, and launch rockets, or work on their athletic skills with an indoor climbing wall and two indoor batting cages. Along with team sports, youth can partake in the ART+ and photography clubs, and participate in programming that promotes leadership, service, money-management skills, health/ wellness, career goal-setting, healthy meal preparation, and more. The Boys & Girls Club strives to enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
The Kilmarnock location serves approximately 100 youth a day. Marketing/Development Director Jill Sears commented, “we have been in the forefront of local youth development, serving youth from all economic, social and/or family circumstances. We

are dedicated to ensuring that our community’s youth have greater access to opportunities that can help shape great futures.”
During the summer, BGCNN partners with the YMCA to provide swim lessons and pool fun and partners with Youth Technology Network for weekly STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math programs. During the school year, Power Hour is time set aside to focus on and get help with homework. After that, everyone branches off to their fields of interest, including soccer, basketball, and a multitude of club offerings. The Torch Club for Youth and the Keystone Club for teens are both leadership and service clubs. The Teen Chef and Young Chef Clubs offer nutrition education through practice in healthy cooking. Teen Talk encourages member discussion of contemporary issues, both public and personal, while Money Matters offers basic money management skills to promote financial responsibility. BGCNN partners with RAL Art Center for the ART+ Club, in which local artists introduce club members to a wide variety of media including watercolors, oil, pastels, fabric art, and sculpture. Club members learn about master artists and their work, and then create their own work in the artist’s style. There is also a photography club thanks to the addition of 12 digital cameras donated by Canon Virginia Inc. Youth and teens can also meet with mentors, and when possible, BGCNN partners with other organizations in the community to bring special programs and activities to Club kids.

Animal Rescue Volunteers Share How They Keep Fighting the Good Fight
Written by Ann DeMuthWhetheryou are a fan of cats or dogs, or both, there are many ways to support the homeless animals of the Northern Neck through Garfield’s Rescue, Inc., Rescue Dog Photography and Northern Neck Partners for Pets.
Garfield’s Rescue
Garfield’s Rescue, Inc., GRI, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, was established in March of 2020 and has rescued over twelve hundred homeless cats and kittens. Recognizing the absence of resources to adequately foster the large number of homeless cats, GRI’s all-volunteer founding members
launched an effort to provide critical medical care and necessary vaccination services to make the cats adoptable.
Working with animal control officers in the Northern Neck, GRI receives calls when there are cats/ kittens with special needs and when the shelters are full. The organization also takes in injured or stray cats when contacted by members of the community, and rehomes cats when their owners can no longer care for them. Garfield’s Rescue provides foster care for over 100 cats and kittens in their network of private
foster homes. They also collaborate with other rescue organizations and caring community residents to provide compassionate care at multiple community cat colonies with daily food, fresh water, shelter, and needed medical attention.
From January to September of 2022, GRI spent over $77,000 on veterinarian expenses and care for foster cats. Their 2022 “Wine & Whiskers” fundraising event held at Triple V Farms was a great success and raised $8,500. Donations are still very much needed to help care for the homeless cat population in the Northern Neck. Ann Bedford commented, “We are making a difference on the Northern Neck, one cat at a time.”

The main shelter will be built on a secluded plateau, surrounded by woods and fields. It will be able to house 27 dogs and 32 cats. Terrie Dort, founder of the 501(c) (3) non-profit NNPP, added, “Of course, part of the success of any shelter is moving the animals in and out, through other rescue groups,

I feel like they’ve given me a chance to take that one shot that’s going to speak to that special someone.”

Northern Neck Partners for Pets
Northern Neck Partners for Pets is well on its way to being a safe haven for cats and dogs in the community. Funds are still being raised to build the main state-of-the-art shelter, but a pavilion has already been built on NNPP’s 35.8 acre property (790 Devil’s Bottom Road, Lancaster)
adoptions, and fosters. So, we will be saving and helping many, many animals as time goes on.” The new shelter will also provide room when the local county shelters are full. Terrie Dort shared, “Our vision is a shelter that will serve as a safe haven for all of the many neglected, abandoned, and homeless dogs and cats that we have in this area. Our goal is to take in these animals and work to get them vetted and rehabilitated so they can get to rescues or permanent homes or even remain with us if that is the result. We intend to work with all of the shelters on the Northern Neck and through our mutual efforts, we have a vision for all of the county shelters of the Northern Neck to achieve ‘no kill’ status.”
NNPP is launching a capital campaign to raise the needed funds
for the shelter in a 2-year time frame. Terrie reported, “A very early gift from Randy Hudson really helped get us launched, and then we were blessed by the purchase of the land by Vicki Kinsel. Those donations, along with major support from the Animal Welfare League, and support from some other major donors, have gotten us to the point where we are today. Now we will be going out into the community and searching for those major donors who will help us make this dream come true.”

Thereis an amazing 97-acre, waterfront gem just on the outskirts of Kilmarnock. Camp Kekoka is home to an overnight YMCA camp which offers kayaking, water skiing, knee boarding, windsurfing, fishing, crabbing, a swimming pool and waterfront, arts and crafts, archery, drama, basketball, cooking, and more. Camp Kekoka hosts the annual Kekoka Yoga Retreat where instructors volunteer their time to raise tens of thousands of dollars to help send kids to camp. The retreat has all levels of yoga classes, meditation, water activities, a climbing tower and zipline, and unique offerings such as Paddleboard Yoga and the Yoga of Sound.
Co-founded by MJ Anderson and Susan Johnson in 2010, the retreat, which started with 15 participants, now has to be capped at 90 people. Over 20 instructors donate their time so that all proceeds can provide scholarships for YMCA/APYC Camp Kekoka. It’s a weekend-long event that attracts participants from ages 18 to 80+, locals to Californians, along with brand new practitioners to seasoned yogis who return year after year.
The theme for the 2023 Kekoka Yoga Retreat is Elevate, with the intention to elevate (and empower) the yoga retreat participants, as well as the campers who benefit from Camp Kekoka. The upcoming retreat is described as “a way to elevate your
spirit on the beautiful waterfront shores of YMCA/APYC Camp Kekoka in Kilmarnock.” Registration includes lodging, meals, all levels of yoga classes, meditation, water activities, a climbing tower and zipline, and much more. All proceeds benefit camper scholarships. The 2023 retreat will be held September 15th to 17th, and registration begins June 1st. Registration for the 2022 retreat filled within 2 weeks, so be sure to get your registration in early.

Lancaster County is located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay on a southeastern peninsula of Virginia — an area known as the Northern Neck. The county is within easy distance of I-95, I-64, and US Routes 17 and 301. Three major highways traverse the county – Routes 3, 200, and 354.
CLIMATE/WEATHER
Lancaster County enjoys pleasant four-season weather, with mild winters – we have average high temperatures above 60 degrees six months out of the year – and barefoot summers.
GOVERNMENT
Lancaster County is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. Monthly meetings are held in the Lancaster Courthouse located in the Lancaster Courthouse Historic District. A county administrator implements policy. Lancaster County is a member of the Northern Neck Planning District Commission which addresses issues of regional significance. The county also has three incorporated towns which may have additional requirements.
