WELCOME TO L.A.'S MARINA Located in the heart of the beautiful Los Angeles coastline and only 4 miles from LAX, Marina del Rey is the Westside’s premier waterfront playground. Make a splash with your next Los Angeles getaway! > Marina del Rey is coastal L.A.’s hidden gem, full of on-thewater recreation, dining with views of the scenic harbor, and competitive rates at waterfront hotels. Adventure-seekers can take advantage of year-round pleasant weather with outdoor excursions such as sailing charters, stand-up paddleboarding, and beachside biking. Also, the Marina is the pick-up point for sportfishing, whale watching, and parasailing trips, all of which head out onto Santa Monica Bay. After a fun-filled day on the water, unwind with a leisurely dinner at one of the Marina’s stellar harborside restaurants. Diners tend to stay awhile, as it’s easy to become enthralled by views of luxury yachts and the early evening light reflecting on the water. Large picture windows at Cafe del Rey and dining patios at Tony P’s, Cast & Plow, Whiskey Red’s, SALT, and Beachside boast some of the best views in town. Or combine dining and sightseeing on a dinner or brunch cruise with Hornblower Cruises & Events. The Marina is the perfect home base for your Southern California vacation. While you could easily fill your whole trip with water sports, cruises, and more right here in the Marina, it’s worth noting that many popular tourist attractions in other parts of the Los Angeles region are within a short drive. The world-famous Venice Beach and Santa Monica are right next door, and you’ll also find easy access to Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Universal Studios Hollywood, and renowned museums in downtown L.A. And after a busy day of exploring, there’s no better place to come back to than any of the Marina’s six waterfront hotels, all of which offer sparkling harbor views.

ACTIVITIES

FUN ON THE WATER It’s no surprise that Marina del Rey’s top attraction is the harbor itself. There’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the water, both for those experienced with water sports and visitors who will see the sea for the first time. As L.A.’s premier waterfront playground, Marina del Rey is the place to be for boating, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, and other aquatic adventures. Even if you’d rather stay on land, numerous outdoor activities afford views of the sparkling harbor.

STAND-UP PADDLE AND KAYAKING Self-explore the harbor with a rentby-the-hour kayak or paddleboard. Keep an eye out for sea lions lazily lounging on the docks or even swimming right beside you!

Marina del Rey Boat Rentals 13717 Fiji Way 310-306-4444 | marinadelreyboatrentals.com > In addition to an assortment of boats for rent, this operation leases kayaks and paddleboards from its shop on the dock behind El Torito restaurant at Fisherman’s Village. Call for hours in cooler months.

What’s a trip to the ocean without a chance to hook a prize catch? In Marina del Rey, you can be at the water’s edge, pole in hand, in just minutes. Or connect with a licensed sportfishing or charter company to head out into the big blue for some deep-sea action off the Los Angeles coast.

Marina del Rey Sportfishing 310-822-3625 | mdrsf.com > Marina del Rey Sportfishing offers the most affordable option for singleday fishing excursions in Los Angeles. Choose from open-party (public) half-day and three-quarter-day fishing trips out onto Santa Monica Bay, offered year-round. Private trips are also available. Santa Monica Bay is home to numerous types of gamefish. Depending on the season, you’ll be on the hunt for halibut, barracuda, sand bass, calico bass, white sea bass, and yellowtail. The boat service includes fish cleaning and packaging, or you can catch and release. A valid fishing license is required for anyone over age 15, and you can buy a one-day license on the boat as well as rent tackle (cash only for onboard purchases). The boat departs from Dock 52 (13552 Fiji Way), which has a large parking lot with free parking.

Land-Based Fishing: Licensed fishing is permitted at the north and south jetties. You can also fish at the nearby Venice Pier, which doesn’t require a license. Fishing licenses and bait are available at the West Marine store, 310-823-5357. The shop doesn’t rent tackle, but there is plenty for sale. Marina del Rey Sportfishing operates a bait dock at Fisherman’s Village, open daily 5 a.m.–6 p.m. Anyone can stop by with a bucket or cooler to purchase live or fresh frozen bait in the form of

sardines, squid, and anchovies. Dock fishing from the bait dock is allowed between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.; $10 per person, including bait. A fishing license is required and can be purchased at the dock, as well as rental rods (call ahead to confirm availability, 310-822-3625).

Private Fishing Trips: Flip to our Yacht Charters section starting on page 30 for information on skippered boats available for private hire. Look for the fishing icon that identifies companies that offer their charter services for fishing trips—not all do.

FITNESS BY THE SEA Identifying types of activities that you enjoy is the key to a successful fitness plan. In Marina del Rey, the premier waterfront playground of the Los Angeles area, you’re flush with options that will keep you smiling while you get your heart pumping.

Beachfront Biking > Marina del Rey is located midway along the Marvin Braude Coastal Bike Trail, a 22-mile paved path between Pacific Palisades and Torrance. Serious cyclists may be up for the whole route, but you can easily pedal just a portion in line with your comfort level. Several Marina hotels offer bike rentals by the day or hour for their guests. Other options are Daniel’s Bicycle Rentals in Fisherman’s Village and Venice Beach Rentals (aka Perry’s) at the Venice Pier. Burton Chace Park: The crown jewel of the Marina, this 10-acre park is surrounded on three sides by water. Walk the perimeter to enjoy picture-perfect views of sailboats, seabirds, and the sunset. Yvonne B. Burke Park: This narrow sliver of green space runs parallel to Admiralty Way and includes a parcourse. At the north end is the entrance to Oxford Basin, a nicely landscaped flood-control basin with bird viewing opportunities. Jetties: The rocky outcroppings that line the harbor’s main channel are paved on top. From the north jetty, you can view multimilliondollar homes on the Grand Canal at Venice Beach. Overlooking Dockweiler Beach, the south jetty is a great vantage point to observe airplanes taking off from LAX.

Dogs

Look for the puppy icons in our restaurant section, starting on page 10, for places in the Marina where you can dine with your dog. Dogs must always be on leash in the Marina’s public spaces, including Burton Chace Park and Yvonne Burke Park. Leashed dogs are allowed at the Marina “Mother’s” Beach picnic pavilions and paved areas, but not on the sand. The neighboring community of Playa Vista has three leash-free dog parks, the most popular being Bluff Creek Dog Park at 12604 Bluff Creek Drive, Playa Vista 90094.
