Greater to close Lambton branch

Changes in the way customers are using its branches and online banking, have led to the Greater Bank’s decision to close its Elder Street Lambton branch after Saturday 12th November. Greater Bank’s Head of Marketing and Distribution, Craig Newham, said that Lambton Branch has seen a significant decline in usage. “There are 30 percent fewer transactions conducted through Lambton branch than there were two years ago.” Mr Newham told Lambton Local in a statement. He said nearby branches are proving more popular with customers. “Greater Bank operates six branches within a five kilometre radius of the Lambton branch including New Lambton, Jesmond and a newly opened modern branch at Waratah Shopping Village.” Mr Newham said. Bush bike vandals cost Council Bike riders have vandalised Newcastle’s most important nature reserve, the Jesmond Bushland in pursuit of their pastime. In recent months major bushland damage has occurred in the Jesmond Park Reserve. The reserve is that area south of Jesmond Park extending up the hill to the edge of the John Hunter Hospital campus. It features a shared walking/cycle path which is in regular daily use by commuters and local walkers. Mountain bike and motor bike riders have deliberately cut down stands of eucalypt trees, destroying habitat hollows and logs, and destroying plant species which are listed as threatened under the NSW state regulation Threatened Species Act. “As a result Newcastle City Council is undertaking bush rehabilitation

A sign on the shared walking/cycle path at the Jesmond Bushland points out the vandalism of the area, which is costing tens of thousands of dollars.” a Council spokesperson said. “The work includes closing duplicate tracks created by bike riders, rehabilitating walking tracks which have been severely

eroded by bike tracks, and removing bike jumps created in sensitive areas of the bushland reserve.” The spokesperson added. The bushland reserve is zoned for ‘Conservation’ and only passive recreational uses are permitted.

We’re really looking forward to meeting the people of Lambton and the surrounding suburbs.” Brett said. For Anthony Piggott the opportunity to purchase Lambton’s pharmacy presented a perfect fit with his family’s existing interests. “My father began operating Blackbutt Pharmacy 50 years ago this year.” Anthony said. “Traditional values and strong, lasting links to the local community are what Piggotts Pharmacies are built on. I have known some staff members at our other locations all my life. Our staff truly have become a family to us. “We’ve met with the existing staff from Lambton, who are all wonderful, and have a long history in Lambton. Under the guidance of Brett and Courtney we look forward to the Lambton staff joining the Piggotts Pharmacy family.” Anthony added.

Old name new again at Snake Gully

“They say the customer is always right. And we’ve got customers, especially the long term locals, who’ve never called the pub anything else.” That’s how Brett McGovern, licensee of the newly renamed Snake Gully Hotel feels. “The business has been known as Bar 121 for the nine years that my wife Donna and I have operated it. We inherited the Bar 121 name, and whilst it has served us well, it’s time for a change and we’re ‘going back to the future’ as they say and we’ve renamed it the Snake Gully Hotel.” Brett told Lambton Local.

What’s in a name?

The hotel, on the southwest corner of Elder and Grainger Streets, Lambton has seen a number of name changes over its 136 years of trading... Local firm on Melbourne Cup winner

The race thats stops a nation has one Lambton-based company busy for most of the year. Sportsink Design is set to expand its involvement with the Melbourne Cup into another decade. Sportsink’s manager Richard Hamment recently announced an exciting new six-year agreement with Victoria Racing Club (VRC) - host of Australia’s iconic sporting event – as the official licensee of promotional party supply products. Sportsink provides official VRC material such as Melbourne Cup carnival display kits which include bar bunting, colour posters, cup and disc cutouts and balloons, as well as sweep books, hampers and bundle packs. And next year it will expand its range to include

Sportsink’s Melbourne Cup brand ambassador Danielle Gillies 30 different Cup promotional products. Mr Hamment says that whilst the Cup takes around three minutes to run, his company’s build-up to the ‘first Tuesday in November’ begins in February.

“We start planning then. Everything has to be approved by the VRC. It’s a true honour and a labour of love to be a part of the history and tradition of the Cup” Mr Hamment added.

Newcastle PCYC at Young Rd Broadmeadow is the venue for the Novocastrian Quilters 2016 Exhibition on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November. A spectacular exhibition of art works and quilts will be on display across the weekend. Members have been enthusiastically completing their favourite works that will be entered into varied categories such as small wall quilt, hand appliquéd, machine pieced, art quilt, Civil War quilt, bag/cushion and the ‘star’ challenge. Prizes for these categories will be awarded by sponsors. There are two categories for younger sewers in the community, up to 12 years and 13-18 years with entries being anything from a small item to a quilt. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to vote for their favourite quilt on display. Admission is $5 (Under 12 free) and light refreshments will be available for purchase. Members have been busy making a variety of excellent quality craft goods and Christmas gifts which will be for sale. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase fabric and other items from local patchwork shops. This year’s magnificent Exhibition Raffle Quilt created lots of interest at the Sydney Quilt Show. The New Hexagon Millefiore Quilt (above left) is a kaleidoscope of colours and created much excitement when we were hand piecing the fabrics that featured Japanese, Aboriginal, contemporary and traditional prints resulting in a stunning combination. Raffle proceeds will this year be donated to Riding for the Disabled at Raymond Terrace. Over the years Novocastrian Quilters has donated quilts to many local charities. For more information on the Exhibition contact Chris 0249 307 690 or 0456 699 319 or Margaret 0418 250 211.

Christmas joy is Nancy’s business

Like many Nancy Zulumovski has always loved decorating her family’s Christmas tree each year. But this New Lambton Heights mother of two has taken her passion further than most and built a business around it. “It started with our tree at home. Then I was asked by a family member if I’d do one for their hairdressing salon” Nancy said. “Friends and family would comment on the trees I was creating and say what works of art they were. You should do this for others.” And she’s doing just that. Nancy recently started Christmas Tree Couture, specialising in the hire and sale of beautiful deluxe Christmas trees for the home or business settings. “We have a large range of designs and sizes which we can customise to your decor and tastes. We deliver and assemble your tree in your home using only the finest quality decorations many of which are hand-painted. “When it suits you we come back to dismantle your tree. You then have the option to buy it and store it in your home or we store it for you ready for hire again next Chritsmas.” Nancy added. To contact Christmas Tree Couture see details below.

Lambton then, Lambton now Stoker’s Hotel

by Lachlan Wetherall

Hotels were a significant part of early coal mining townships. Apart from their obvious aspect of a place to consume liquor, hotels provided facilities for visitor accommodation, stabling of horses, a venue for travelling salesmen to hawk their wares, a space for social gatherings, political meetings, and much more. In 1865 John Stoker arrived in Lambton from the NSW goldfields and opened the “Gold Miners’ Arms” hotel, on the north east corner of Elder and Grainger Streets. As well as being one of the first hotels in Lambton, it attained significance in the community due to a substantial addition made in 1869 and reported in the paper … “Mr. Stoker himself is going to extend his premises by building an assembly room sufficiently large to contain 500 people. Such an edifice is very much wanted here, as there is not at present any place in the township (chapels excepted) able to contain 150 persons.” The new large upstairs hall was used regularly for

public meetings of all kinds, such as the nominations for the first council election in 1871, and a coronial inquest into the death of two men at Lambton colliery in 1878. The hall was variously known as “Stoker’s Hall”, “Stoker’s Long Room”, and eventually as “Druids Hall” because the United Ancient Order of Druids used it as their regular meeting place. In 1871 John Stoker changed the hotel’s name to the “Gold Miners’ Home”, a largely irrelevant change, for such was the association between pub and publican that everyone referred to the place as “Stoker’s Hotel” even years after Stoker ceased to run the hotel in 1885. There were a dozen different licensees over the next 30 years including Stoker’s son Edward for a short time. The final licensee, George Malbon, took over in 1915 and changed the name to the “Central Hotel”. Malbon operated the hotel until 1921 when it was closed by the Licences Reduction Board, and the building was subsequently demolished in 1926. Israel Christian Identity

The late Christian writer Selwyn Hughes quoted in his marriage course, “Marriage God’s Way”, “If you don’t know who you are, you won’t know who’s you are”. World events coincide with prophecies of God’s word, but did you know that the punishment is first on true Israel before the tares (evil) will be removed in the coming Kingdom of God. Amos 3/1-2 “Hear this word that the Lord hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying, you only have I known of all the families of the earth, therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.” Read also Psalm 147/19-20 and Matthew 15/24. Grocery shopping is one of those everyday tasks you have to do. This makes it really hard when there is so much temptation at the shops and you are trying to eat healthy. Thankfully there are some tips that you can take on to help you stay on track and even save some of your hard earned cash. Eat beforehand Never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. This is a recipe for disaster. When you are full your mindset is on what you need to get whereas if you are hungry it is all about what you can get to eat. Usually this is when we pick unhealthy foods which can be very tempting when you are starving. Make a list Grocery shops are designed to make you buy. They are set up in a way that makes you want to buy things you don’t need. To solve this problem, make a list and stick to it. Hopefully you are planning out healthy meals so make your list based on that. Then it is simple…….stick to the list when you are at the shops. Avoid certain aisles Notice how the biscuits are all in together, soft drinks and chips, lollies and chocolate. Unless you need something in these aisles (and you shouldn’t) don’t even go down them. This is where the list comes in handy. That way you won’t even see the temptation. Shop the outside On that note, most shops are designed to have fresh food at the outside of the store. Make sure this is where you are spending most of your time. Look at what you are buying Look down into your trolley or basket and the majority should be fresh unprocessed food. If not re evaluate. Grocery shops are designed to get you to buy and most of the time it is not healthy foods. Arm yourself with these tips and you will not only be saving your waistline but also making a saving at the checkout as well. So until next time, Love life, dream big and become the inspiration Anne-Marie

Preparing for life’s plot twists by Chris Stevens B. Fin, M. Acc, CPA Partner at GC Accountants

Are you prepared for life’s unexpected plot twists? It’s impossible to know what’s on the horizon, but with the right personal insurance, at least you can be financially prepared against life’s curve balls. So how do you know which types of cover are right for you? Here are some personal insurance basics to get you started on the road to financial protection. Life insurance: Think of life insurance as a financial safety net for your loved ones. With the right cover in place, your beneficiaries will receive a lump sum payment in the event of your death, so they can keep up with regular expenses, cover any debts and put aside money for the future. If you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness, your insurer may also agree to pay out your insurance early. The level of cover you need depends on the debts you would leave behind (such as a mortgage) and how much your beneficiaries would need to keep up with their ongoing expenses without your income to rely on. Income protection: If your regular earnings suddenly stopped, how long could you manage financially – and what would you have to give up? Income protection insurance regularly pays part of your usual income if you’re unable to work for an extended period due to illness or injury. You can adjust the cost and value of your cover by customising the waiting period, benefit payment period and the portion of your income you want to insure. Premiums for income protection policies that you personally own are generally tax deductible. Trauma insurance: Serious health conditions such as cancer, heart attack,

stroke or blindness impact the lives of millions of Australians. For example, one in two Australian men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, while over 3.7 million Australians are affected by heart disease. Trauma insurance helps cover the costs of treatment and rehabilitation in the event of a critical illness, with a lump sum paid if you’re diagnosed with one of the conditions specified in your policy. TPD insurance: Being faced with a permanent disability can have a far-reaching impact on your lifestyle. With Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) insurance, you can receive a lump sum to help cover any immediate costs and also your ongoing living expenses if you become disabled and can no longer work. What is a Will kit and will it suit you? by Chris Hill-Smith of Appleton Law, Lambton A Will kit is a pre-printed form to which you add your personal details and select or delete certain alternatives to complete your will. In some circumstances a pre-printed will, provided it has been filled out carefully, is absolutely fine. Where an estate is not complicated and the intended beneficiaries follow along traditional family lines a will kit should normally produce a suitable will for the intending testator. It is important if using a will kit to ensure all details have been entered correctly

and that all selections have been made with due consideration because otherwise the will may not be valid or the effect of the will may not be as you intended. Having noted that, there are many circumstances and situations that make will kits unsuitable as a testamentary document. Firstly, will kits are drafted in a basic format to include the most common situations. They are not able to provide for less common or unusual situations, for example where there are blended families, where the estate is complex, where there are debt issues to be taken into account or where you have interests in trusts, companies, partnerships or self-managed super funds. Other situations which may not be able to be dealt with effectively or at all by the use of a will kit are where the testator wishes to leave unequal gifts or shares to various dependants, or intends to leave a dependant out of their will all together. If those types of issues relate to you, you should seek the services of a professional will drafter to make sure your wishes are properly and effectively documented. Will kits also do not address debt or taxation issues, including capital gains liabilities or social security implications. In addition, these days a significant proportion of estates are made up by superannuation and/or life insurance benefits. Whether those assets form a part of the estate at all is the first question and then consideration must be given to the ultimate recipients of such benefits because there can be negative taxation consequences for non-dependants and /or the estate. The good news is that it is relatively inexpensive to have a will drafted professionally to take into consideration all of your individual circumstances and issues. Come and see us to discuss your will requirements. Disclaimer: the content of this article is provided for information purposes only. Vet chat

with Dr Lauren Alexander Greencross Vets, Lambton

Is your pet itching?

At most vet clinics spring and summer are the seasons for itchy pets and allergies. Have you ever noticed that your pet scratch’s excessively, licks or chews its paws constantly, over grooms or shakes its head? These can all be signs of skin disease or allergies. These symptoms are not only uncomfortable for your pet but can also be irritating for you as an owner. When we see these pets we often identify scratches to the skin, red inflamed skin, scabs, and hair loss or ear infections. There can be a number of causes of itching and allergies. The most common cause of itching we see is from fleas. Pets often become itchy around the tail base and rump when affected and sometimes even just a couple of fleas can make pets very itchy. If your pet is itching, flea prevention may be recommended. Food allergies or sensitivities are another cause of itching in our pets. A common misconception is that an animal could not be allergic to its food as it has always been fed the same and never had a problem. A large number of food allergies we diagnose are to foods that have been in the pet’s diet for a long time and they have developed an allergy to it. A food allergy is diagnosed through a food allergy trial that is performed with a special prescription diet. Another common cause of allergies in our pets is a condition called atopy. This is an environmental allergy to many things like grasses, pollens and dust, similar to when people have hay fever. We often diagnose atopy after ruling out other causes of itching first as many pets may be allergic to more than one thing. There are some treatments and medications available to manage this condition but unfortunately is a lifelong issue for affected animals. If you have noticed your pet start to itch and scratch with the onset of spring, or perhaps your pet is always itchy, please get in touch with us here at Greencross Vets Lambton. Our vets can discuss with you the likely causes of itching and tailor a diagnostic and treatment plan for you and your pet. For further information and advice simply call in or give us a call on 4957 8960.

Spotlight shone

Over the last months, Newcastle has witnessed the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. For many people, it has been a harrowing experience. But it has also been an experience that was necessary. For too long, these deeds have been kept in secret, kept in the shadows. No longer. The Commission has allowed us to shine the spotlight and to make clear what was before opaque. We saw instances of church men who were perpetrators. We saw instances of clergy ignorance of how to deal with crime. We even saw church hierarchy turning a blind eye. The three worst perpetrators in one local high school were all teachers I saw every day at school and who abused friends of mine. Two are in gaol, the other has died. It has been difficult to watch. And of course, victims were part of the Commission too. Unimaginably brave souls who, despite their shame, disclosed their own stories so that justice might be done, changes made and that no other child should ever go through such brazen villainy again. The victims have my enduring respect. Sadly, it is not uncommon for me to hear these stories from adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is a powerful insult to the psyche and affects people for years to come in so many areas of their lives: their confidence, their sleep, their relationships, their sexuality, their ability to navigate life with psychological equilibrium. Depression and anxiety is common; so is post-traumatic stress. While we cannot undo the past, lives can be helped and healing can come with the willingness to face the truth and to understand that the shame and guilt, never ever deserved, can be let go.
