Holiday blessings from Lama Surya Das

I could wail on how a little Mindful Anger Management could go a long way to save endangered young black men on the street, or how the credibility gap between the interested public and our government agencies and leadership, in this Over Information Age, seems to grow and fester; but it's the holiday season now and I'm looking at the three quarters of the glass that's full, rather than the half that's empty. The news glut and general cacophony can be so depressing, but whenever I talk to a young person and meet their eyes I irrationally feel hope, inspiration, and a call to get it together, together. I try to take the long view and connect meaningfully, soul to soul, through every encounter. In this way, every day is like a holiday, every day a day of


rest, like Sabbath. Whatever holidays you may or may not choose to celebrate-in this diverse world, who can even count or remember them all-it's my intention and prayer to inspire you to do something helpful for someone else, every day– and even more so, without expectation of return or special acknowledgment. This noble giving is a gift that will keep on giving. Let's share it around. None of us can do it all alone. We need each other to get “there”, as the Dalai Lama himself has said. Let's remember the secret wisdom I call Being there while getting there, every single step of the way. Let's occupy the space of pure spirit and good heart, and not leave it to the one percent.
