Bill Bradley Defensive Coordinator
Former National Football League pro bowler and longtime coach Bill Bradley begins his first season as the defensive coordinator at Lamar University. Prior to joining the Lamar coaching staff, Bradley served as director of the secondary at FBU (Football University), a one-of-a-kind training experience for the nation’s elite youth and high school players. Bradley spent two years with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League as defensive backfield coach, helping the franchise reach the league’s championship game twice. Before joining the Tuskers, Bradley served as the defensive backs coach for the San Diego Chargers for three seasons, one of his three stops in the NFL. While with the Chargers, San Diego led the NFL in interceptions for the first time in club history and reached the AFC title game in 2007. Bradley served under Guy Morriss at Baylor University as the defensive coordinator from 200406. After inheriting a defense which ranked 105th nationally in total defense, Bradley helped the Bears reach a ranking of 63rd and coached over a dozen All-Big 12 players while at Baylor. Bradley went to Baylor following a three-year stint with the New York Jets as the team's defensive backs coach. While serving under head coach Herman Edwards, Bradley helped the Jets rank among the NFL's top 10 in pass defense, advance to the playoffs in 2001 and 2002 and win the 2002 AFC East title. Bradley enjoyed a successful three-year run with the Buffalo Bills before moving on to the Jets. With Bradley serving as the defensive backs coach from 1998 to 2000, the Bills led the NFL in total defense in 1999, ranked third the year before and were sixth in 2000. Buffalo advanced to the AFC playoffs in Bradley’s first two years with the team. Bradley enjoyed success in the Canadian Football League before breaking into the NFL coaching ranks. While serving as the defensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts, Bradley helped the team win the Grey Cup in both 1996 and 1997. He also served as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach for the CFL's San Antonio Texans (1995) and the Sacramento Gold Miners (1994), worked as the
defensive backs coach of the World League's San Antonio Riders (1991-92) and spent three years with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders (1988-90) as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Bradley’s first coaching job came in 1983 with the San Antonio Gunslingers of the United States Football League. He spent his first season as the team’s defensive backs coach and personnel assistant, before spending the 1984 campaign as secondary coach. Bradley spent the 1985 season with the USFL’s Memphis Showboats as secondary coach, and also served the 1987 season as a volunteer assistant at the University of Texas. A third round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1969, Bradley went on to earn three straight All-Pro awards from 1971-73 at free safety. In addition, he served as the Eagles' punter, kick returner and holder. Bradley, who led the NFL in interceptions in both 1971 (11) and 1972 (nine), became the first player ever to lead the league in interceptions in consecutive seasons. Bradley still holds Eagle records for career interception return yardage with 536 and club single-season marks for interceptions and return yardage with 11 picks for 249 yards in 1971. Bradley is tied with Brian Dawkins and Eric Allen for most career interceptions in club history with 34. He played in 114 NFL games, spending the 1969-76 seasons with the Eagles and the 1977 campaign with both the Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Cardinals. Bradley was a high school All-America quarterback out of Palestine, Texas. He led his team to the 1965 state title and went on to a stellar college career as a quarterback and defensive back at Texas from 1966 to 1968. He served as a tri-captain on Darrell Royal's 1968 Longhorn team which finished the season with a record of 9-1-1 and tied for the Southwest Conference championship. The 1968 Longhorns were ranked third in the final Associated Press poll and beat Tennessee 36-13 in the Cotton Bowl. Bradley recorded a UT single-game record four interceptions in the Longhorns' 35-14 win over Texas A&M as a senior, a mark that still stands as the best-ever by a SWC performer. He played in the 1969 Hula Bowl, the Coaches All-America Game and the College All-Star Game. Bradley earned UT's 1968 D.H. Byrd Leadership Award. A member of the Texas Sports, Texas High School, University of Texas and Philadelphia Eagles halls of fame, Bradley and his wife, Susan, have two children, Matthew and Carissa.
