LAMAR CARDS BASEBALL

BRIAN NELSON VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT First Season Brian Nelson enters his first season with the Lamar baseball program after coaching stints at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor and Brazos Christian High School.

In his time as an assistant with the Bombers, they amassed an 88-37 record and had 19 TCL All-Stars, 14 Perfect Game top prospects and seven Baseball America top prospects.

While at Brazos Christian, Nelson led the program to a runner-up finish in the 2013 State Championship game and coached three All-State Players.

As a player, Nelson attended the United States Air Force Academy to play both baseball and football. Unfortunately, shoulder surgeries cut short his playing career and after two years Nelson transferred to Texas A&M University, where he graduated with a degree in sport management. Following his time in College Station, Nelson earned a master’s in business administration from Sam Houston State.

Before arriving at Brazos Christian, Nelson was an assistant coach at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas. Nelson primarily worked with Catchers and Pitchers. During his time with UMHB, Nelson helped the Crusader catchers improve in every statistical category while finishing 2nd in conference in stolen bases allowed. During the 2012 season, he helped direct Chris Joshlin to the American Southwest Conference batting title and a place on the ABCA All-Region team. Nelson also brings summer collegiate experience with him. Nelson spent the 2012 and 2013 summers with the Brazos Valley Bombers in the Texas Collegiate League as an assistant coach. The Bombers record-breaking 2013 season culminated with Perfect Game awarding the team the summer collegiate league national championship. It marked the second straight season that the Bombers won the Texas Collegiate League title, finishing with a league-record mark of 46-14.
