Utah coach suspends his entire team over poor discipline, cyber bullying Matt Labrum had seen enough. As the head football coach at Union High in Roosevelt, Utah, Labrum had watched his players receive discipline for skipping classes at school. He'd been more troubled by others who were accused of cyberbullying fellow teens. He didn't like any of it. So, after a loss to Judge Memorial Catholic High, Labrum told his team that as of that moment, they were no longer a team. All players — 80 in total — were required to turn in their jerseys and all equipment. No one would play football again until they "earned the privilege to play." Incredibly, the players say they have embraced the tough love. "We looked at it as a chance to say, 'Hey, we need to focus on some other things that are more important than winning a football game,'" Labrum told the Deseret News. "We got an emotional response from the boys. I think it really meant something to them, which was nice to see that it does mean something. There was none of them that fought us on it." The early results, as documented in this terrific feature from the Deseret News, have been remarkable. Players showed up at school the following day — a Saturday — at 7 a.m. and were told how they could re-earn a spot on the team. Teenagers have been cleaning up area streets as part of new team-mandated community service work. They are attending character classes during hours when they previously would have been practicing. "One of my weaknesses that I wrote down," he said, referring to an exercise the players engaged in during Monday's character class, "was that I wasn’t holding people accountable on the field and off the field. As a leader, on the field and off I have to hold people accountable." His passion for football hasn’t diminished, but Nielsen said he does have a new perspective on what it means to wear the Union High uniform

Soldier's end-of-tour farewell to

It's a bittersweet moment when a soldier musters out and leaves a barracks buddy behind to finish out his tour of duty. But when that buddy is a devoted dog that's been more than just a good soldier, parting is just plain sorrow for both man and dog. Jiang Yutao and K-9 dog Heibao trained and served together for two years in the Chinese People's Armed Police, and Jiang called the Kumming wolfdog "the baby son I never had." But the officer's stint in the service ended with a passing-out parade, and Heibao wasn't ready to say goodbye -- tugging on Jiang's pack as he tried to leave, toting it to the gate and fetching a hat that blew off his partner's head. "I wish I could take him with me," Jiang said. "But he's still in the army and I'm not." Sure you don't want to re-up, soldier?

his K-9 dog will break your heart

Jean-Claude Van Damme, 53, performs the splits between two moving trucks He demonstrated his incredible flexibility and prowess at martial arts in many of his early movies including Kickboxer and Double Impact. But now at the age of 53, Jean-Claude Van Damme is showing he is still as supple as ever. The Belgian star action performs the splits in between two moving vehicles in a new advertisement for Volvo trucks. Folding his arms, the star balances perfectly with his legs in horizontal position between the trucks which are reversing along what appears to be a runway. The commercial starts with a close up of the actor talking directly to the camera while standing in a more upright position between the moving vehicles. 'I've had my ups and downs,' he says. 'My fair share of bumpy roads and heavy winds. That's what made me what I am today.

Fleeing driver shot while dragging police officer

A suburban Chicago police officer has been released from hospital after being dragged by a car driven by a fleeing Thanksgiving Day shoplifting suspect, police said Friday. Another police officer fired at the 52-year-old driver, who remained hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his arm following the Thursday night incident at a Kohl's department store in Romeoville, the Romeoville Police Department said in a statement. The suburb is about 30 miles southwest of Chicago. The store reported suspected shoplifters to police just after 10 p.m. Thursday. As a patrol approached the store, one suspect bolted out a door, officers giving chase to a waiting car. As the one suspect jumped into a passenger seat, he closed the door on the officer's arm and the driver drove off — hauling the officer with him. "The officer was dragged quite some distance," Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey said at an earlier news conference.

Online charity scams on the rise 'Tis the season to be jolly. Unfortunately, 'tis also the season for charity scams. Consumers often become more generously minded in December, thanks partly to the many appeals they see and hear in malls and on the streets. A survey by Charity Navigator found that charities receive 41 percent of their donations in the last few weeks of the year. . The approaching year-end tax deadline also makes December a great month to take charitable deductions. But the very impulses that make us want to give can make us less cautious about whom or what we give to — and scam artists are all too aware of this. Currently, certain online types of charity scams are on the rise, according to several experts. Crowdfunding, for one, offers increasing opportunities for charitable giving — and for scams, according to Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of BBB Wise Giving Alliance, the charity-monitoring organization affiliated with the Better Business Bureau. "You can read stories about individuals in need, or organizations that may be soliciting for various projects," he said. "Don't assume that the organizations or individuals on those sites have necessarily been vetted to any great degree. They may have verified that the organization has tax-exempt status, and that may be it." In other words, you may be able to take a deduction for your donation, but that doesn't mean the entity you are funding is putting your money to use in any way close to what you intend.

Chinese parents say having two kids is too expensive By Le Li, NBC News Producer BEIJING – Despite China announcing changes to its strict one-child policy, many young parents say they will not choose to have a second child due to the high cost of living in modern-day China.

“Giving birth to a second child is not difficult, but we do not have the energy anymore,” said Wang Tao, a 35-year-old native of Beijing, who is married and has a 5-year-old daughter. “We lack a safe social net to support a family with two children,” Wang added. “China doesn't provide a pension or free education,” he said while ticking off a list of things that make having a larger family a financial burden. After more than 30 years of the strict policy aimed at controlling population growth, the new policy will allow couples to have two children if one of them is an only child. But Wang is not alone in his views, according to a surveyconducted by the Communist Party controlled “People’s Daily” newspaper.

Your brain isn't lefty or righty, but probably top or bottom

If you're a sucker for those tests that tell you whether you're leftbrained or right-brained, you've been using old brain. Scientists have long known that the popular theory of a logical side of the brain doing battle with the creative side is mostly bunk, myth-making hysteria from some 1970s lab research that even the author, Nobel laureate Roger Sperry, cautioned against. Halves of the brain, scientists agree, work together not in isolation. Now neuroscientist Stephen Kosslyn and author G. Wayne Miller suggest that top and bottom sections of the brain are a more pertinent split, an upper half that "sets up plans and revises those plans when expected events do not occur; the bottom (that) classifies and interprets what we perceive." But it's still more of a collaborative process, no matter what your left brain tells you.

Your gut may tell you how happy your marriage will be, scientists say

When it comes to a couple's longevity, people may want to follow their guts as well as their hearts. A Florida State University study found that visceral feelings about one's spouse in the early stages of marriage may be a predictor of long-term marital satisfaction, even if the participants couldn't totally articulate those feelings. Researchers showed newlyweds pictures of their significant others and measured reaction time and the type of response (positive or negative). When the scientists followed up four years later, the couples who had responded more slowly or with lukewarm responses reported more marital dissatisfaction than those who had quickly answered with positive responses. "I think the findings suggest that people may want to attend a little bit to their gut," study leader Dr. James McNulty told Science Daily. "If they can sense that their gut is telling them that there is a problem, then they might benefit from exploring that, maybe even with a professional marriage counselor."

World's first floating city would sail around the globe, never dock

This concept lends new meaning to "cruise to nowhere." A Florida company is trying to raise $10 billion to build the Freedom Ship, a mile-long, 25-story-high floating city that will have its own airport, schools, casinos, ballfield and aquarium. The ship would be able to house 50,000 people, plus 60,000 additional visitors and crew, and be set on "Perpetual Sail" mode, meaning it never has to dock (and, as the biggest sea vessel the world has ever seen, it wouldn't be able to fit into any port anyway). It might be difficult for residents' family to send them mail, though: The Freedom Ship will always be on the move circling the globe.

Three Ways the Winter Season Affects Your Sleep With cold air surging across the country and snow lingering from several winter storms, the winter season is nearing. But as this time of year ushers in less sunlight, colder air and holiday indulgences, it can have a significant impact on the human sleep cycle. "Sleep is the time for the body to rest and repair itself and get ready for the functions of the day," Associate Physician in the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School Lawrence Epstein, M.D., said. The amount of sleep each person needs varies by individual, but most people need between 7.5 and 8.5 hours of sleep each night. 1. Lack of Light "The change in light can have a big effect on the time and quality of your sleep," Epstein said. The amount of daylight during the winter is more limited than in the other seasons, impacting the body's cycles. 2. Colder Air Winter is notorious for an increase in utility bills as temperatures drop and heat gets turned on. However, heating can have undesirable effects on sleep quality. 3. Change in Eating Habits Christmas cookies, along with other holiday sweets, can alter the body's hormone levels and, as a result, impact the sleep cycle. Tips for Better Winter Season Sleep 1. Set a routine. 2. Set the room temperature to be cool and comfortable, but not too dry. 3. Turn off electronic equipment an hour or two before going to bed. 4. Get moving or get some exercise everyday. 5. Try to relax before going to sleep. 6. Get some light exposure everyday. 7. Try not to eat three to four hours before going to bed.

Fast & Furious' star dies in car crash

A publicist for actor Paul Walker says the star of the "Fast and Furious" movie series died Saturday in a car crash that killed two people north of Los Angeles, his publicist said. He was 40. Walker died Saturday afternoon, Ame Van Iden told the Associated Press. A statement on the actor's Facebook page said he was a passenger in a friend's car, and that Walker was in the area to attend a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. "We ... are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news," the statement said. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department said that deputies found a car engulfed in flames when they responded to a report of a collision in the community of Valencia. Two people who were found in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The Santa Clarita Signal reports a red Porsche crashed into a light pole and tree and burst into flames. Walker was working on "Fast & Furious 7" at the time of his death. He also starred in the suspense drama, "Hours," which is set for release this month.

Lawyer clipped coupons so he could leave $187.6M to charities

When Jack MacDonald showed up at grocery stores with an armful of coupons to buy cases of discount orange juice, employees might have suspected he was a hoarder. And he was, sort of. Frugal to no fault, the Seattle attorney accumulated a vast fortune, and now, upon his death at age 98, he has left $187.6 million to benefit Seattle Children's Hospital, the University of Washington School of Law and the Salvation Army. MacDonald lived in a modest one-room apartment and wisely invested the money he'd received through family inheritances, but he had no biological children of his own. "He was quirky and eccentric in many ways," his stepdaughter Regen Dennis told Good Morning America, "and always stayed true to himself by acting on his convictions to do the most good with his wealth."

National Zoo reveals name of baby panda The National Zoo’s cutest new resident finally has a name. After receiving more than 123,000 votes, the zoo announced Sunday that its adorable 100-day-old panda cub will be named Bao Bao.

Zoo director Dennis Kelly said, “We're grateful to everyone around the world who voted to name the cub and help us celebrate today." National Zoo's panda cub takes her first few groggy steps And today, Bao Bao's father Tian Tian will have a celebration of his own. He will receive a very special ice treat to commemorate the special occasion. Bao Bao was one of several names that were voted on by the public in the past month. Other options included Ling Hua, which means “darling” or “delicate flower,” or Mulan, the name of a Chinese warrior woman. According to Chinese tradition, panda cubs only receive a name when they reach 100 days old. And while many panda cubs face health issues when born in captivity, Bao Bao has remained healthy. She will make her public debut in January 2014.
