2015 marked by growth, loss, compassion By B.C. Manion

New construction captured many headlines during the year 2015 in The Laker/Lutz News coverage area. But, so did traffic issues and changes happening in area schools. Other news chronicled setbacks and tragic losses. But, there were inspiring stories, too. Tampa Premium Outlets, a 441,000square-foot mall with 100-plus designer brand shops, opened in October off State Road 56, near the Interstate 75 interchange. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel embarked upon a $78 million expansion project – 2 ½ years ahead of schedule — to add 112,000 square feet and renovate 11,000. Florida Hospital Center Ice, a new 150,000-square-foot sports facility, broke ground on Feb. 24. It will have an Olympicsized hockey rink, four other rinks and the ability to accommodate other sports.

Lutz and Land O’ Lakes also saw their share of growth. New homes and apartments are popping up along the State Road 54 corridor and along portions of Land O’ Lakes Boulevard. A Lowe’s home improvement store opened on State Road 54, the Land O’ Lakes Community Park underwent a $2.3 million upgrade, and a new Pasco County Utilities Administration building opened off Land O’ Lakes Boulevard, also known as U.S. 41. Just outside Dade City, an aerial adventure park, known as Tree Hoppers, began operation, and a number of new businesses have settled into the downtown historic district. Of course, the new development has added to the area’s traffic jams, which won’t be resolved in the short term. But, there are efforts being made to address the issue. A big thanks to George Raab for his great music, and a big thank you to the dance committee for all their work so we could dance the night away. Our annual “Evie McMann’s Tea was held at the social hall with Sue Flynn, our manager, and Vicki Arndt chairing the tea. We were greeted at the door by Nancy Pollack wearing the dress that Evie wore 24 years ago, when she started the tea from her little trailer serving fruit cake, sticky buns, and lots of cookies and tea. It has continued each year in her memory. Sandwiches, chips, cookies and tea were served. The entertainment was a bell choir from local churches, directed by Vicki Arndt, performing some beautiful Christmas songs. We ended the afternoon with singing Christmas carols, a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. The ladies brought gifts to share with the pregnancy center. Thank you to all who helped to continue Evie’s tea. The Rainbowettes Red Hat Ladies enjoyed a night at The Shops at Wiregrass light show, and we ate dinner at the Red Robin restaurant. It was a beautiful night seeing a great light show, especially great music from a local Methodist church. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to all!

On Dec. 12, we had our annual golf cart parade. Approximately 12 carts circled our development at Grand Horizons. The parade went at a pace where anyone could view it. Brian Heidman led the group and did a terrific job. Each cart was decorated very nicely, but only six decided to be judged. There were three winners. Those in the top three were Jim and Judi Leitzke, Paul and Carolyn Ray, and Ron and Joyce Bell. Each couple received a trophy and had their picture taken. The trophies were donated by Andy and Margaret Castonguay. After the parade, we all gathered in the community center where there were goodies plus coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Fletcher Music had a sing-a-long and presented a free CD plus two certificates for a six-week course of beginner lessons. Rainbow Village looks like Christmas with most of the homes decorated with beautiful lights. It is so much fun walking up and down the streets admiring how the residents have decorated their homes. There were prizes for the best decorated home and trailer. It sure was hard to pick a winner! Tony and Gail Andrade were honored at one of our ice cream socials. They have been residents for 23 years and, due to some health issues, are going home to Maine. Tony was very involved in organizing our shuffling teams, and we will always remember Tony for his great spaghetti dinners. We wish them the best and will miss them. Judy Lykins and Ellie Sawyer co-chaired our annual “Christmas Cookie Exchange this year. These ladies have refreshments and punch for the ladies that donate cookies, and they decorate the tables so prettily. The residents bring two-dozen cookies: one dozen to donate to Meals on Wheels, and one dozen to share. They also can pick out a dozen to take home. They collected over 125 dozen cookies for Meals on Wheels. A big thanks to Judy and Ellie for hosting this event for Meals on Wheels. George Raab provided the music for our Christmas dance recently. It is not hard to sit back and enjoy these warm, sunny days. Yes, it was Christmas week, and yes, we should have be thinking of friends and relatives up north freezing and shoveling. But, the truth is that we were having an exceptional December in Florida and our northern friends were also. This did not stop the enthusiasm for special events over these weeks. The regular activities, however, go on as usual. The only noticeable difference, at the conclusion, were the happy faces, warm hugs and/or handshakes, and the heartfelt “Merry Christmas wished to all.Wonderful! Christmas, as always, was celebrated at Happy Days starting with a craft sale on a Saturday morning. This year, for the first time, it was open to the public and was a commercial success for the crafters and also the hot dog lunch. The hall was quickly turned around for the evening annual Christmas party. This is always a favorite with residents. A mixture of why we celebrate Christmas is combined with the joy of spoofing ourselves, Santa and Mrs. Claus, surprise $5 gifts and, of course, more food. Thanks to Dennis and Paula Cosmo. On Saturday evening, our ad hoc carolers toured the park serenading those who are not as mobile, and entertaining all. Cookies and refreshments on the tour were appreciated, to keep the pipes moist. As usual, it was also the judging and awarding of individual lighting displays. Some of us were expecting visitors from the not-so-frozen north over the week, packing bathing suits and sunglasses. However, we enjoyed family and friends wherever they were, remembered the true meaning of Christmas, and gave thanks for the goodwill of man and the freedom we enjoy. From all the residents, and management of Happy Days, hope you had a very merry Christmas.

Connerton and Pasco on the path to new homes By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Kyle and Melody Marks fit in nicely with the demographics that are driving residential growth in Pasco County. And, these young professionals are clear on the lifestyle they want for themselves and their two children, Amelia, age 5, and Brody, age 7. In six months, they plan to move from a starter home to a new and larger home in Connerton, a master-planned community off Land O’ Lakes Boulevard, also known as U.S. 41. Connerton is one of Pasco’s up-and-coming neighborhoods attracting eager buyers who want bang for their buck, a touch of the rural, and the amenities of big city life. The Marks are saying goodbye to the temptation to cross the county line into Hillsborough or Pinellas, in search of a good restaurant or a shopping excursion. “There is no more traveling back to Tampa for everything,” said Melody Marks. The Marks set their sights on Connerton months ago, and became the first buyers of a Lennar-built home in the community. Lennar is the newest homebuilder to offer homes at Connerton. The Marks are part of an overall resurgence of home buying in Pasco County, which is recovering from the disastrous economic downturn in 2008. Back then, new home construction constricted. And, many residents saw their existing housing values plummet. Some are still underwater, with mortgages that are higher than their property values. But, that is changing, said Jeff Morin, vice president of sales for Lennar Homes. “People wouldn’t sell before, because they were upside down,” he said. “This uptick has allowed people to be more comfortable that they can break even or make a little money.” Developers are building more rooftops, and a growing population has hit critical mass and pay dirt for retail. Tampa Premium Outlets is the most visi-

On the education scene, there was a changing of the guard in top leadership at Saint Leo University, just outside Dade City. Dr. Arthur Kirk retired, and Dr. William J. Lennox Jr. assumed the top post. Pasco-Hernando State College also has a new president, with Dr. Timothy Beard being named to the post after the retirement of Dr. Katherine Johnson. The state college’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch also hit a milestone, announcing that it would be surpassing the 3,000-student enrollment mark. On another front, Sanders Memorial Elementary School reopened in Land O’ Lakes, as Pasco County Schools’ first magnet school. It is a STEAM school, with a curriculum that focuses on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. Pine View Middle School also launched an effort to become the public school dis-

trict’s first International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. And, Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel began operating on a 10-period school day, to reduce the number of students on campus at the same time. A more permanent solution to Wiregrass Ranch’s overcrowding is expected to occur when the district opens a new school for grades six through 12 that is being constructed on Old Pasco Road. In another change, the district adopted new boundaries for a new elementary school in Wesley Chapel, off Mansfield Boulevard, which is scheduled to open next fall. The new school will relieve significant overcrowding at Seven Oaks Elementary. The boundary shifts, which were controversial, will increase enrollment at Denham Oaks Elementary in Lutz. In other school news, St. Timothy Catholic Church in Lutz opened the Saint Paul II Youth Center and opened a new elementary school to house Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic School. about progress and new beginnings, not all of the news was positive. For instance, the GFWC Lutz Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club was forced to cancel its 36th annual arts and crafts show, because a sinkhole developed at Lake Park. The annual two-day event, which has drawn about 30,000 shoppers a year, was the club’s biggest fundraiser. So, besides disappointing shoppers and about 300 vendors, the cancellation also will reduce the club’s ability to help scores of community organizations and charities. The year also was marked by the passing of Land O’ Lakes cross country coach Kris Keppel and Laura Hauser, a former non-instructional employee of the year, who worked at Wesley Chapel Elementary before she became too ill to work. Both lost battles with cancer. And, car accidents claimed the lives of Pasco High student Jordan Ivie and Wesley Chapel High. These deaths inspired demonstrations of respect, generosity, compassion and kindness — to help those grieving their loss. In another show of support, the community of San Antonio rallied to hold a benefit

for Lewis and Diane Riggleman, whose home was destroyed by fire. Other uplifting moments involved Suellen Smith, the cafeteria manager at Zephyrhills High, who continues her tradition of collecting and giving away dress shirts, dress pants, gowns and dresses to help outfit young men and women for prom, homecoming, weddings and other special occasions. Another big moment for 2015 involved Leigh Dittman, a Gaither High student from Lutz. The 15-year-old recently reached a goal she set when she was 7: To raise $1 million for Shriners Hospitals for Children. The young woman has a disorder known as Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease. During a recent interview, she said she was motivated to raise the money for Shriners because of how giving it has been to her. “They are such an amazing group of people, and they’ve given me so much, with my life. It seemed like the right thing to do,” Dittman said.

Fresh start for softball at Carrollwood Day School By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

Frank Arcuri has nearly three decades of experience coaching softball. He was an assistant coach for Eckerd College last year, and spent many years in travel ball, where he won multiple championships. His daughters even played Division I college softball. So what brings him to Carrollwood Day School, 1515 W. Bearss Ave., to head their softball program? It’s the timing. Not for the coach; for the players. “I feel like my niche is the 14-, 15-, 16year-old athlete,” Arcuri explained. They’re right where you want them in the development stage, and it’s a real joy to take them to the next level of playing.” At the college level, coaches are doing more fine-tuning and strategizing with players, he said. But when they’re a few years younger, they can still learn new things to improve their game significantly, yet they’ve already established that they have the talent to compete. Carrollwood Day School’s softball team has already demonstrated its abilities. The Patriots have reached the regionals in state playoff competition in each of the past three seasons, including a trip to the state semifinals a couple of seasons ago. Arcuri wants to build on that success, but there’s a lot of time between now and the start of the season. That’s why he wanted the team to participate in a Hillsborough County fall league, to give the players time to gain extra experience and additional time playing together.

school and encourages them to play other sports that might even help them with improved footwork when they return to the softball field. “Track and basketball are very good. So is soccer,”Arcuri said. That footwork will be important, because he wants speed to be a character trait of his team. He’s considering bringing a special trainer out to teach them different techniques, and to allow players to use their speed to cause problems for opposing defenses. Arcuri also will focus on selling the program to the team and building trust, since he views himself as a players’ coach. With so much experience teaching and coaching at different age levels, he has a good feel for how to handle athletes at different stages of development. And for female athletes in high school, the best method is to instruct without being too critical, he said. It’s better to use positive language to put them at ease, but keep them in a learning mindset. “It’s pretty good, but let me show you where it might be even better to help you out,” Arcuri suggests as a method of teaching an athlete a new technique. “You have to keep a positive spin on everything.” COURTESY OF FRANK ARCURI As he settles into his new job, Arcuri is Softball coach Frank Arcuri is the new head softball coach for the Carrollwood Day School already feeling positive about the talent he’s Patriots. LOL girls soccer works hard, aims high and consistently wins By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

When a team lets the opponent score 11 goals in soccer, it sounds like the defense is struggling. But, when those goals occur over a 17game span, it sounds like a championship defense. The Land O’ Lakes Gators girls soccer team is seeking a championship, and the defending Class 3A-8 champions are off to a 15-2 start. Earlier this year, the Gators closed out its previous season in a 2-1 loss in the title game against American Heritage from Plantation. While some teams might stumble a bit after that kind of loss, Land O’ Lakes has raced to a strong start. Aside from a 3-0 loss to Academy of the Holy Names on Dec. 1 and a 2-3 loss to Mitchell High on Dec. 14, only a handful of their games have been particularly close. And, they have won several of their games by sizable margins. Coach Vicky King doesn’t see any se-

cret formula to the Gators’ success. “We work hard. We do have a good bit of talent. They have high expectations,” she said. “We work for everything we get. We know that nothing is given to us.” That work includes a preseason conditioning program, which ensures that the athletes are in good shape when the first whistle sounds. Many of them also play club soccer, which helps, King said. Many of them also play on different club teams, which the coach sees as an advantage. The players come together after being exposed to a variety of philosophies and styles of play, and when they play for their high school team, they execute at a high level on the field. Even bumps in the road can have positive benefits. The loss to the Academy (who was also undefeated) was a lesson that they still have areas that need improvement. “It was a good game. It was very challenging for us and shows what we need to work on,” King said. “It makes us refocus. If we want to reach our goals and succeed, then we know we have work to do.”

“Work” is a common theme with King. It has built a strong program over her 29 years as the team’s soccer coach, and it’s something she discusses with her players regardless of their opponent or their record at the time. By maintaining that focus, it builds a level of expectation that freshmen and sophomores recognize immediately, and work to meet or exceed from the very beginning. It also helps maintain impressive records from year to year. Including the two losses this year, the team has lost only six games since the beginning of the 2013-14 season. With that much success, some coaches might see a return to the state championship game as a likely event, or at least one that has a good chance of happening. But, King lives by the “one game at a time” mentality she preaches to the athletes. Like her players, she takes nothing for granted and only allows that continued success is a possibility if they remain focused and work hard. “A lot of things can happen. They’re teenagers. Injuries, illness — the cards

have to fall just right,” she said. Those cards tend to fall into place for Land O’ Lakes, but it doesn’t happen with animated yelling or aggressive coaching on game days. The real work is done in practice, King said. If a team is prepared and focused, that should show up on the field. And, with all the players understanding what’s expected of them, most of the pieces are already in place when they step onto the field. At that point, it’s up to them to execute. With all her success (the team won a state title in 2003) King said it’s ultimately their team, and they understand what it takes to continue the winning legacy of Land O’ Lakes girls soccer. “I coach the team, but the team belongs to the players,” she said. “It’s their team. They know what our expectations are as far as performance on the field, performance in the classroom and performance in the community.” The team has two remaining games on its schedule. It plays Pasco High on Jan. 6 at 7:45 p.m., and it plays Tampa Catholic on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
