Just about every road leading to Zephyrhills is two lanes. And for what is soon to become the largest incorporated city in Pasco County, leaders there says it’s time for that to change. Yet, whether it’s U.S. 301 from the south, State Road 54 from the west, or now the new extension of State Road 56 into the airport business park area, Zephyrhills just can’t get any respect. “The rest of (State Road) 54 has been widened in the county, but not Zephyrhills,” one resident and local businessman, Nils Lenz, shared in a recent letter. “Why is Zephyrhills being left out? The population within the city limits of Zephyrhills — with

It’s crunch time for annual holiday toy drive By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
Bob Loring isn’t Santa Claus.Yet he has some 250 elves at his disposal, and he seems pretty jolly about his job. “I’m the head elf,” Loring said.“It’s a thrill. Personally it’s so rewarding. I get to work with and be around the neatest people in Pasco County.” The retired Marine doesn’t look like Kris
Kringle, either, but he does share a common goal with the Christmas character. With the help of elves (volunteers), he distributes toys to boys and girls during the holiday season. The difference is that Loring does it in real life. Loring heads up the local Toys For Tots chapter, part of a national program that distributes toys to needy children run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for more than 65
years. He took the helm back in 1999, and in his first year, the group distributed toys for nearly 400 children in the Dade City area. But he knew it wasn’t enough. To expand,Toys For Tots would have to increase the number of communities it serves. Most people who donate want the recipients to live in their area, Loring said.As a result, they’ve broadened their efforts to provide a happy holiday to children in Zephyrhills, Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel, as well. The donations have gone up, too. Loring expects to distribute toys to around 4,000 children this year. And the method of distributing them is almost as important as the donations themselves. Wanted: New bikes to spread Christmas By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

THE BIG NEWS IS HERE! CHECK OUT PAGE 7 FOR DETAILS.
What began as one couple’s attempt to teach their daughter about the struggles that many families are faced with has broadened into an effort to bring new bicycles to children who have little prospect of ever owning a new set of wheels. Todd and Cindy Caroline of Lutz began providing new bicycles to children from less fortunate families about six years ago. They wanted their daughter Zoye, now 9, to understand that not all families are as blessed as theirs has been, Cindy Caroline said. Over time, the effort branched out. At first, the Carolines simply asked people attending their annual Christmas party to bring a new bike to help brighten a child’s holiday, Caroline said. Then, they decided to shift the effort over to their company — Caroline Contractors LLC — so they could reach out to their suppliers, business associates and other members of the See BIKES, page 6

DADE CITY RACEWAY SOLD After more than 15 years of corporate ownership, RaceTrac Petroleum Inc. has sold its Dade City RaceWay location for $2.3 million. The buyer of the station, located on a little more than an acre of land at 12310 U.S. 301, is 974 Pasco LLC, managed by West Palm Beach attorney Carolyn Sakolsky. The location was built in 2004 on land RaceTrac purchased in 1999 for $263,000. Bobby and Dorothy Baker of Zephyrhills originally owned the land. It’s not clear if the sale of the property will affect the location in any way.A request for comment last week from Atlanta-based RaceWay was not returned. However, there is a chance the RaceWay might have sold to a franchisee. According to the company’s website, locations owned by corporate use the name RaceTrac, while those owned by franchisees are called RaceWay.

A new apartment complex in the Dade City area will have a chance to move a big step closer to reality Jan. 18 if the developers there can convince the county commission to rezone nearly 22 acres of land off Clinton Avenue. Six Feet Under LLC is asking the Pasco County Planning Commission to rezone land near Floral Memorial Gardens Cemetery from agricultural to high-density multifamily. That would allow the developers to build up to 160 apartments on now-vacant land. The project, according to documents filed with the county, is called Quiet Valley. Six Feet Under lists Vicky Johnson of Dade City as its manager. She’s associated with another company — Matthew 6:20 LLC — that owns more than 100 acres of primarily grazing and orchard land near Trilby and other parts of rural East Pasco. The land, located on the north side of Clinton Avenue just a quarter-mile west of U.S. 301, was purchased from Hodges Family Funeral Home in late 2006 for $94,200, according to county property records. Although no start date for the project has been announced, a study filed by Raysor Transportation Consulting said the community should be complete by 2017. The county’s planning commission approved the rezoning Dec. 3.

Porters give blood, sweat, tears to development By Michael Hinman mhinman@lakerlutznews.com
Not too long ago, Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn called Pasco County a bedroom community, doing nothing more than supplement the economic engine of his county, Hillsborough. Whether Buckhorn’s observation of Pasco is accurate or not now is not what J.D. Porter is focused on. Instead, he wants to make sure that’s not the Pasco County of tomorrow. “Bedroom communities are not the future,” Porter recently told members of the Pasco Alliance for Community Associations. Porter represents his family in the expansive Wiregrass Ranch project that is converting thousands of acres of grazing and agricultural land into sustainable residential neighborhoods and corporate parks in the greater Wesley Chapel area. The land is part of more than 14,000 acres the Porter family picked up in 1941 at $1.73 an acre when their previous land holdings in Zephyrhills were grabbed to create what would become the municipal airport there. Porter’s uncle would be the first to flip his land, doubling his money in just four years in what would later become Meadow Pointe. But J.D.’s grandfather James and father Don would hold on for decades. “We could’ve easily sold out to a bunch of different developers, but none of them represented the legacy that my dad and my grandfather really embraced,” J.D. Porter said.“They wanted to do all the things they didn’t have growing up.That is why you see a college and a hospital, something other communities don’t have after 35 years. Here, you see them in before there is even a rooftop at Wiregrass.” Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel far exceeded any of the initial expectations, and already is running at capacity, Porter said. Pasco-Hernando State College’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch opened in 2013 already saw its enrollment jump more than 22 percent in its second year. The Shops at Wiregrass, which opened in 2008 at the corner of State Road 56 and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, makes more

money per square foot — about $15 more — than Tampa’s International Mall, Porter said. Property nearby along the east side of State Road 56 is planned for more of a mixed use, including the possibility of constructing apartments up to five stories tall. “It would be for young professionals working at the hospital, at the college, or even with Raymond James, they might be able to catch some of those buyers,” Porter said. Rents there could run as high as $1.25 a square foot — or $1,375 for a 1,100square-foot unit — well above some of the typical prices of about $1 per square foot. Porter doesn’t want to just start and stop with young professionals, however. Instead, he envisions having a community that serves all walks of life, from birth to retirement. That’s why that particular area also includes plans for a 300-unit active adult community that could save families having

to drive to places like Zephyrhills or the University of South Florida area to see older relatives. Pasco has not had tremendous luck in attracting big-name employers to the county, but Raymond James Financial is still at the table, Porter said. The St. Petersburg-based financial company announced in 2011 plans to build two 100,000-square-foot buildings that could bring 750 jobs to the area by 2024.The county and state even kicked in $15 million in tax incentives to help make it happen. Raymond James, however, missed its 2012 target date to start construction. Making matters worse, the company says it will likely delay that project up to five years simply because they’re not ready to expand. “We think it’s a great site over time,” Raymond James’ chief executive Paul Reilly said during an October symposium. “But

Through the end of the year, Florida residents younger than 22 can purchase a lifetime license that covers saltwater and freshwater recreational fishing, hunting, and most associated permits, for $500. A lifetime license is true to its name, giving the holder of that license the ability to hunt and fish in Florida for the rest of the person’s life, even if they are no longer a resident of the state. Licenses can be purchased at all Florida county tax collectors’ offices, or online at License.MyFWC.com. For information, call (888) 347-4356.
CORCORAN TO LEAD APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE
State Rep. Richard Corcoran has been appointed the chairman of the House’s Appropriations Committee for the coming legislative session. Florida House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, RMerritt Island, named Corcoran to the seat last month, to bring his “wealth of knowledge and expertise” to the position. With Corcoran in line to become the next speaker, Crisafulli said he was looking for a way to include Corcoran into the operations of the House the same way Will Weatherford did for Crisafulli when he was the speaker. Corcoran, R-Trinity, won re-election without opposition this past cycle.
right now, we don’t need the space, and when we need the space, we’ll look at expansion there, or see what happens to our other facilities.” But it’s just not the economy holding that project up, Porter said. It’s the federal government. “We have all the permits from Pasco County, and all the permits from Swiftmud,” Porter said, referring to the Southwest Florida Water Management District.“What we’ve been waiting for over the past 16 months is the Army Corps of Engineers. There are a lot of things I’d rather do than deal with these people. It is disgusting.” Although there are a lot of hands in the Wiregrass Ranch pot when it comes to development, Porter refuses to take a backseat. “So much blood, sweat and tears go into this,” he said.“But you only get one shot to do it right.”

PUBLISHER’S COLUMN
Going weekly further proves bright future By Diane Kortus Publisher
We hear talk all the time that newspapers are failing everywhere, and that no one under age 30 will ever read an oldfashioned print paper like the one in your hands. Our readers are proof that these doom-and-gloom predictions are wrong, at least when it comes to community papers like The Laker/Lutz News. There are more than 60,000 people who read our papers every week, and another 13,000 unique visitors to our website and 2,000 Facebook likes. That’s a lot of people in Lutz, Land O’ Lakes,Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills and Dade City — a number that represents 79 percent of the households in the ZIP codes we serve. We’re so optimistic about the future of newspapers that we’ve made significant investments in recent months to improve the quality of our papers in order to attract even more readers and advertisers. The biggest and most noticeable change was last August, when we increased our page size by 30 percent to become the same size as most daily papers. Today we are announcing another major investment — this one for our readers in Zephyrhills and Dade City. Beginning in January, the East Pasco edition of The Laker will once again be a weekly paper — publishing every Wednesday just like our editions in Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel. We’ve been publishing a Laker for East Pasco residents for 10 years, beginning as a weekly and then changing to an everyother-week format in late 2011 during the height of the economic crisis. Back then, local businesses could only afford to advertise every other week, and we adjusted our business plan accordingly. But now, with our economy getting better every day, we’re ready to return to a weekly format. Going weekly means we will include our new B Section in our East Pasco edition, a section that adds eight more pages of feature stores, photos, contests and puzzles. It also organizes all of our classified products in one section to make them easier to find. This addition will give East Pasco read-
ers 22 to 24 pages to read, instead of the 14 to 16 pages they receive now. Going weekly also means that Publix will begin inserting its grocery circular in our East Pasco edition. This is in addition to circulars from Publix Liquors, SmartSource coupons, Michaels Stores — and beginning in March, Lowe’s. It’s a big deal for most readers to get their weekly Publix circular inside their Laker so they can plan their shopping a day or two before the store’s weekly sales begin. We are thrilled to be able to provide this circular to our readers in East Pasco, especially since Publix is building its first store in Dade City in 2015. And it’s a big deal for our company to have Publix choose our papers for its circular program. Publix is a huge testament to the effectiveness of advertising in our papers, and to the loyalty of our readers to support our advertisers and shop local. As we get ready to go weekly in Zephyrhills, you’ll begin to see new bylines from reporters who are helping us expand our news coverage. While my staff already does a fine job writing about issues that impact readers in East Pasco, publishing weekly will obviously allow us to publish more stories on a more timely basis. East Pasco readers also will see more stories in their paper from Wesley Chapel, Land O’ Lakes and Lutz. After all, residents of Zephyrhills and Dade City do not live in a bubble and are part of the greater Pasco community. We know you care about what happens in neighboring towns because you shop, worship, attend school, and have friends and relatives who live there. And that is what makes us different from other community newspapers, which only report news about happenings in Zephyrhills and Dade City. We believe East Pasco residents have much broader interests and want to read wellwritten stories about things that affect their lives, and read about the many good things happening in all communities of Central Pasco and East Pasco. My staff and I are excited to take our East Pasco edition weekly in just a few weeks. We recognize this big step for our business would not be possible without the loyalty of our readers and the support of our advertisers, and we thank you for that. We truly look forward to becoming an even more vital part of your routine — not just twice a month, but every week.

community to help. This is the fourth year that the company has had its Christmas bicycle drive. Each year, it collects at least 100 new bicycles, or the family makes up the difference. But this year, it has a substantially more ambitious goal. It wants to collect 1,000 new bikes. Caroline knows that that’s more of a dream than a goal, but she’s open to miracles. In the past, the couple has given the bicycles to other charitable groups, Caroline said, and those groups have distributed the bicycles primarily to children living in East Tampa communities. This year, the focus has shifted to helping local children, Caroline said. She attributes the switch to a conversation she had with Suzanne Beauchaine, an account manager for The Laker/Lutz News. Beauchaine had asked her why the new bikes didn’t go to local children, and Caroline responded it was because she didn’t have a local event. That prompted the Lutz woman to consider staging a local event to give away the bikes. Buoyed by Beauchaine’s encouragement, Caroline began making telephone calls. First she contacted local schools — Schwarzkopf Elementary in Lutz and Myrtle Lake, Pine View, Connerton, Oakstead and Odessa in central Pasco — to see if they could help identify children from families in need. Then, she began calling around to local organizations and businesses to see if they could help. Caroline called Chad Hudson at Hungry Harry’s Family Bar-B-Que, who stepped up in a big way. The popular Land O’ Lakes restaurant is providing food and the use of its Lake House for a party on Dec. 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Charlene Ierna of the Lutz-based Ierna’s Heating & Cooling is providing a bounce house for the party. The kids will get free haircuts, too, courtesy of Star’s Organic Spa as well as Cameo Salon & Spa. Caroline still is trying to line up live entertainment, but at the very least, she said she will have holiday music over a loudspeaker system. She’s also trying to collect turkeys and
Here are four ways you can help to make a child’s Christmas special: • Drop off a new bicycle at Caroline Contractors, 19003 Apian Way, Lutz; or Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce, 2810 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., Land O’ Lakes. • Purchase a bicycle and have it picked up. • Order a bicycle online from Walmart or Target and have it shipped to Lutz, where it will be picked up. • Contribute money to purchase a bicycle, which range in cost from $50 to $80, depending on size. For more information, or to schedule a pickup, call Cindy Caroline at (813) 9314611, or email her at cindy@carolinecontractors.com.
other holiday foods to give to each family. “We just want to be able to bless these families because life is very hard every day for them,” Caroline said.“They struggle. I’d really like to be able to give the families a Christmas dinner.” Besides the local groups that already have stepped up, Caroline said she’s reached out to members of the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce and is hoping they come through to help ensure there are enough bikes for each child to take one home. “Our office used to be right next to the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce, so our heart is Land O’ Lakes,” Caroline said. “My husband grew up here. He went to Land O’ Lakes High, so he’s homegrown here.” She’s also looking for a source that can provide free or discounted helmets, worrying about the children being safe as they ride their bicycles. Donations from the general public also are gratefully accepted, Caroline said. It typically costs $50 to $80 for a new bike, depending on the size. “If I can get a bike for every child that comes, I’ll do it,” she said.“If I can’t, I’ll do a lottery-type system.” Some people may wonder why the focus is on providing new bikes, instead of food or other items. “You go out on a bike and you forget all about whatever the troubles at home,” she said.“I want them to have fun.”

State Sen. John Legg said he and Burgess want to have a town hall meeting to discuss some of the city’s transportation issues in January or February. The east-west corridor of the county, the Lutz Republican said, is becoming more congested because of the residential growth there. The meeting, Legg said, could help the lawmakers decide how to move forward, and possibly move some projects up on the list, including the possibility of making the State Road 56 extension four lanes. The Zephyrhills City Council may not wait that long. It was scheduled to vote on a resolution during its regular Monday meeting imploring state lawmakers to back the expansion of State Road 56 to the city now, rather than later. The resolution cited, among other things, the residential growth in the city, as well as $5 million in facility improvements at Zephyrhills Municipal Airport, which also serves as an industrial park for
TOYS, from page 1 Toys For Tots relies on school counselors to identify needy children and families. Then, instead of simply distributing bags of gifts based on age and gender, a parent or guardian will go to a local center where one of the elves helps them choose from the available toys for each child in the family. Every recipient receives a couple of bigger gifts as well as some stocking stuffers to make sure they have a few things to open. Someone who knows them handpicks them all. This method ensures the right gift goes to the right recipient, Loring said, because the parent or guardian has a good idea what each child would like. Some children might be more or less advanced for their age, and finding suitable gifts requires more than guesswork based on how old they are. Letting a parent or guardian choose the gifts themselves provides another benefit: dignity. “I want the parent, first of all, to be treated with kindness, to be brought into the Christmas spirit,” Loring said.“We’re not here to make people feel uncomfortable that they’re asking us to help them.” By playing a role in deciding what their children receive, the experience is more in line with traditional gift giving. While the organization has provided toys for decades,Toys For Tots had to adjust with the times. They still have collection boxes at various locations and businesses where people can donate new, unwrapped toys. And they still have their annual toy drive with the National Association of Letter Carriers, where residents leave toys by their mailboxes and the letter carriers pick them up on
the city. Councilmembers want FDOT to revisit its construction schedules, and based on new budget priorities from state lawmakers, fund the four-lane expansion. Lenz doesn’t want the transportation discussion to stop at State Road 56, however. He feels it’s time the state look at finally widening State Road 54 — something that has been talked about for more than a halfcentury — and which has been widened everywhere except one last major stretch between the eastern side of Wesley Chapel to Zephyrhills. FDOT has approved widening that road to where it meets Morris Bridge Road and Eiland Boulevard, but still won’t take that final leap into downtown Zephyrhills. “In comparison to the other ideas … (State Road) 54 is absolutely the best option,” Lenz said. “It will be less expensive than all the other options suggested” as rights of way have already been acquired, usually a costly and time-consuming process in building a new road. their postal routes. The problem is that fewer people know about it. The U.S. Postal Service previously allowed Toys For Tots distribute free mailers to each resident, letting them know when the drive would take place. But a few years ago they stopped providing that benefit due to costs, Loring said, so his organization has had to get more creative in getting the word out on when to leave toys for their letter carriers. He admits that current donations would be even higher if not for the mailer setback, because many residents don’t know exactly when it occurs. Still, with some assistance from the national Toys For Tots organization and mostly local donations, the chapter provides presents for thousands of local children each year. And with some help from other groups, Loring has built a network of addons to accompany the holiday presents. For example, faith-based organizations and Rotary Club sponsor Food For Tots and Skivvies For Tots, offering food and clothing for those in need. And down the road, Loring would like to add Shoes For Tots as well. But for now, Loring will settle for another successful toy drive for needy area families. And in doing so, it also will translate into a happier holiday for those volunteers who find it can be better to give than to receive. “My elves get more out of this than the families we help. That is true,” Loring said. “They come away with the Christmas spirit and they take it home. It’s magnificent.” The Letter Carriers’ toy drive is set for Dec. 6. For more information about local Toys For Tots efforts, contact Loring at (352) 5884230, or at redbobbin@tampabay.rr.com.

Support the Troops director Mark Van Trees inspects care packages headed for Afghanistan. They contain basic items like coffee and toothpaste, which are precious cargo for troops stationed overseas.
Support the Troops remembers those serving overseas By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
Mark Van Trees received the Champion of Service Award presented by Gov. Rick Scott on Nov. 12 for his work with Support the Troops. And it would be a good story — except Van Trees doesn’t like talking about it. “It’s certainly not deserved,” the Wesley Chapel organization’s director said. Instead, Van Trees prefers to talk about the dozens of volunteers who stock, store and pack the steady stream of care packages that get shipped to military personnel overseas. He believes they’re the ones who

deserve to be honored. He also likes talking about Bob Williams, the founder of Support the Troops, who worked tirelessly growing the organization until an accident in 2012 left him unable to continue the project. Williams deserves the credit,Van Trees insists, as indicated by the hundreds of certificates of appreciation addressed to him that decorate Van Trees’ office and the walls of the facility, located at 29807 State Road 54, that ships the packages.Williams now resides at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home in Land O’ Lakes, and Van Trees is now the person who works six days a week, raising money for the seemingly
endless postage expenses associated with shipping thousands of care packages overseas every year. The recipients live on military bases that don’t have the facilities for personnel to get the basic comfort items we take for granted in the United States, he said. And while receiving the award was a proud moment,Van Trees keeps a more personal kind of recognition in a box by his desk. “Thank you so much for the gifts. They are greatly appreciated,” reads one card from a member of the military.

Mary Maldonado stepped into a driveway in Dade City on Nov. 7 expecting to take a few photos in front of a home she was preparing to buy. She got a lot more than she bargained for. Maldonado arrived with her infant son, Leonni, and was greeted by Warrick Dunn, former NFL player and philanthropist. His charity, Homes for the Holidays, helps single parents realize their dreams of owning a home. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity of East and Central Pasco County, who helped Maldonado through the home-buying process and set her up with an advantageous loan, Dunn welcomed her into a fully furnished home with a well-stocked kitchen. From living room furniture to a bedroom set for Leonni, the home was move-in ready. She signed the ownership paperwork, received her keys, and accepted a ceremonial check for $5,000, which went toward her mortgage, courtesy of Homes for the Holidays. Not bad for a Friday morning.

AROUND THE PARKS
Hands-on volunteers keep things moving By Lee Heffelfinger Gem Estates
The November activities in Gem Estates really geared up with the heavy influx of our residents returning to the park. It was great to see lights on in the houses, and the yards and flower beds being tended to. We had a lot of compliments on the Veterans Day decorated tree and celebration, in the form of a free-to-residents pancake and trimmings breakfast. Jim Nagle was the chef, and his committee responded with lots of help and good food. We have certainly had our share of sickness, surgeries and bad health problems. Our president, Al Bennett and wife Deanie — who recently returned from their home in Massachusetts — are finally on the road to recovery. Prayers and good wishes are being said for Betty York, Norma Monsulik’s daughter Bonnie, Ginnie Zepp, Bill Weiss, George Held, Jim Phillips, Jim Pardee, Helen Springer, Joanne Clate, Randall Smith, and Neva Roy. Best wishes and speedy recovery to all. Please, if you have a chance, go visit these folks that are here in Zephyrhills. November birthday wishes were sent out to Sharon Krenz, Tess Stacey, Dea-Ann Burgess, Ken Mann, John Raab, Elaine Mercer and Earl Sprague. The clubhouse was the scene of the wedding reception of one of our residents, Eugene Leibrook and his bride, Judy. Best wishes to you both. The decorations and food were displayed very elegantly, and the honeymoon cruise to the Bahamas followed the reception.

Dea-Ann Burgess decorated the Thanksgiving tree at the Gem Estates Thanksgiving feast.
Randall and Lee Smith celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Nov. 27. Best wishes for many more anniversaries. There was a good turnout for the Tuesday craft class with Dea-Ann Burgess instructing the class on how to make

pocketbooks out of men’s neckties. Ron Raymond is chair of the maintenance committee, and had a meeting scheduled for the volunteers that were helping him on Dec. 4. Several projects need our volunteer help.
Some of the committee chairmen have announced the upcoming games and activities. Loretta Green is once again chairing line-dancing classes with a new instructor with only a $2 hourly price. Mary Kay Lynch is hosting the euchre games on Monday nights, and also will head up the bingo volunteers when we start again in January. Ann Casey is coordinator of the marbles games on Tuesday evenings, as well as hosting the potluck suppers and yoga instruction. Karen Wyant is starting a chair exercise class. A new Bible study class called “The Back Porch,” hosted by Tom and Barbara Cleavenger, will meet on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. This year, Maine residents hosted and prepared — along with other states — the Thanksgiving feast, and it involved lots of good help and lots of good food. The table decorations, and of course the Thanksgivingdecorated tree, were a terrific asset to the festivities.About 130 residents took part in this fabulous dinner. We have had many speeders coming in and out of the park. If you see these speeders, feel free to holler and tell them to slow down. We owe a big thanks to vice president Richard Burgess and wife Dea-Ann for hosting the coffee hour socials every Thursday morning. Great job, Richard. We are still looking forward to the Panama Canal cruise, and you can still enjoy going with us to see Jimmy Fortune, the tenor with The Statler Brothers, when we go in February.

AROUND THE PARKS
Something for everyone at Grand Horizons By Helene Rubenstein Grand Horizons
We had our lunch connoisseurs Nov. 14 at Doc’s Pub & Grill located in Dade City. This was a nice, cozy restaurant with several television screens tuned to sports channels. Bill and Pidge Elliott hosted the lunch, and 46 people attended. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and each patron was given a raffle ticket for a meal certificate before lunch even started. This was a nice touch and all had expectations of winning. We had our community-wide yard sale Nov. 15 where certain houses had sales in their driveways. There were many houses that participated in this event and lots of merchandise to choose from. Several houses had many a knickknack, while other places sold several pieces of furniture. There was something for everyone, and it was fun just browsing. They also had a rummage sale in the community center where they sold loads of donated items and numerous books. There were so many books that some people had trouble choosing what they wanted to read. There was a bake sale with countless goodies, and lunch also was served. This way, people could order lunch and be able to stay and not leave the park. I hosted a luncheon for the women of Grand Horizons and guests Nov. 20 PHOTOS COURTESY OF HELENE AND MARTY RUBENSTEIN at Blackstone’s Reef & Grill. Ten women enjoyed a lovely luncheon and There was no shortage of books to choose from at the Tita Mauk and Rae Rice attended the women’s luncheon at Blackstone’s Reef & Grill. rummage sale in the community center. had a lively conversation. The service was excellent, the food very tasty, and the waiters and waitresses bent over backward to help us in any way, shape or form. We had one entire section of the restaurant, so it literally felt like a private room. Many pictures were taken, and our waitress was nice enough to take a picture of the entire group. After the lunch, four door prizes were given away. Everyone went home happy and content. Approximately 20 people enjoyed a new activity added to our already big list of activities. On Nov. 20, it was movie night hosted by Cheryl Leone. The movie was “Bridesmaids” starring Melissa McCarthy. It created lots of laughs among the people that attended the event, and everyone seemed to have a good time. The next movie, Cheryl tells me, is in Marie Paolantonio and Jeanne Bloomfield at Blackstone’s Reef & Grill in Zephyrhills. The lunch connoisseurs recently met at Doc’s Pub & Grill in Dade City. January.
Preparations begin for a busy season By Millie LeBaron Palm View Gardens
Thanksgiving was celebrated by a large group of residents sharing a delicious meal. The committee made sure that people who were not able to feast with the group had a meal delivered to them. Breakfasts are served on Saturday morning this year. The menu is different each week. Gloria Irwin and her committee serve the meal. The bingo games are going well. Many are attending. A meal is served before the games begin. Everyone is welcome to a different entrée each Tuesday. Ted Spurlock serves ice cream during intermission — ice cream is a favorite here. It also is served on Sunday evenings. The park is being prepared for the holi-
day season. Many elves were seen stringing many new lights. There is a nativity set on the pond as well as Santa in his boat. He will be looking for his good friends for Christmas deliveries. Thank you to the elves for a wonderful decorating job. There was a swinging dance in November. Chuck Gould arranged for the entertainment. People are getting their golf carts prepared for the annual Christmas parade. There will be music and lots of fun. Following the parade, refreshments will be served at the clubhouse. Come enjoy the new library as it has been remodeled. Among the other changes in Palm View Gardens, the gazebos have been remodeled. They are an inviting place to sit by the pond and enjoy the view.
PET STATION
Many activities have begun. The shuffleboard players are getting ready for their first tournament, hosting Hillside. There is a fun game of horse and collar on Saturday mornings. Please come join the fun. The pool tables are busy with many having a good time. The ladies sewing group is stitching away. They have a Christmas project to donate to a nursing home. Stained glass workshops have begun with instructor Jim Smith. This group makes beautiful items, including lamps. Howard Teasly has begun instruction with those interested in woodworking. They also make wonderful projects. Our resident nurses do blood pressure screenings on Tuesdays in the clubhouse at mail call. Hazel Sterger is the instructor for the ce-
ramics classes. What a great place to make presents. There also are large groups of residents who enjoy card games. Cribbage players gather on Monday nights. Euchre players meet on Wednesday evenings. Several people are meeting on Friday afternoons to play a variety of new games. Brenda Brown and MaryAnn McPheron are chairs for the Palm View Gardens photo book. Residents will have their best smiles on for the camera. Thanks to Bonnie Pratt for the Sunday entertainment by John Moss. Bonnie also is the resident bus driver with planned trips to places like Hooter’s, the dog races,Webster, outlet shopping, and many others. Church services have begun. Hymn sing begins at 9:30 a.m., with a service following at 10 a.m. A Christmas card project for disabled veterans is taking place. Residents are asked to deliver stamped Christmas cards to the clubhouse leaving the address area blank. The cards will be sent to disabled veterans.
